    I live by SPHAGNUM. I've switched out all of my plants over to it and they are pushing out faster and bigger growth then in soil. Another GREAT video...

      I just want to point out that sphagnum isn’t a renewable recourse, and I personally wish people would take this into consideration when using sphagnum. You may already be aware of this, so this comment is hopefully for somebody else looking into sphagnum moss.

      Matilda Just started getting into sphagnum because I’m trying to hang baskets. After seeing all the comments about how great it’s been to other people’s plants, I’m glad I ran into your comment! Definitely something to take into consideration - thank you. :)

    I initially had horrible luck trying to root cuttings in spag, so I hated it for the longest time. Since I've started experimenting with anthuriums (all 3 I have now are all in moss), I've really started to figure out how wet to keep the moss and I've had tons success with it so far!

  • @bkrbkrl
    @bkrbkrl 3 года назад +29

    I am so glad someone is addressing this. I grow just about everything in it, including when I was big into succulents/cactus! I originally got the idea from succulent wreaths. Then I started experimenting by propagating plants into it and left them in it. Many plants show us they prefer it when you use it in propagation boxes. Many plants that rot easily do very well living in it instead of soil.
    I also found that with my hand/wrist issues, the moss and a plastic pot kept things very light to handle, which really helped me out.
    There is a caution with this: it can cause lung issues if you handle the dry material and breath in the dust. Do not blow this off or take it lightly. This issue is easily solved, however, by soaking it and being careful when initially handling the dry material: I wear a mask or stay "upwind" of any dust when pulling it out of the bales it is sold in to wet it. This issue is no longer a problem when in a pot because it is compact in the pot and is no longer loose/being manipulated.
    I remember a few years ago watching a bonsai plant tuber that used it for bonsai! Worked perfectly for him.
    Fungus gnat larva feed on soil fungus. No soil, no fungus. Fungus doesn't like the acidity of the moss as well.
    Things CAN rot in it if soil particles are introduced into it and/or it is kept sopping wet. When reusing moss from propagation boxes, I rinse it well with very hot water, then soak it in hydrogen peroxide water (not long) before draining and placing it back in my propagation boxes.

      Thank you very useful. Just wondering when you wash with hot water to reuse can that kill the Spaghnum moss though? I'm lead to believe the moss is alive and that's why it's green? I want to clean to reuse but I don't want to kill it so I want to do it right. Many thanks.

    Hi Lulu, thank you for this video! I transferred all of my orchids into moss this year. I'm getting good at it. My question is this, I keep my orchids that can be in full sun under a covered deck because I'm afraid of what will happen. I'm scared if, for example, I went out for the day and there was a downpour, that something disastrous would happen. But I previously had them in those full sun conditions and they did great. What do you do about plants in mostly or all moss that have no protection from rain?

    Soil contains nutrients, moss does not. I reckon it might be good for succulents or something. I use sphagnum moss for the gekkos and in my experience it dries out really quickly.
    Coconut husk contains the moisture longer. Just saying.
