@@MicksMasdevalliaorchids I just started a new try with a tray thats twice as large, as i managed to get my friends into the carnivore game the demand is rising :) You should try a Xaxim Pot with a cephalotus & sphagnum - looks amazing after 1-2 years :)

I grow my spagnum moss in transparent storage containers, no soil. I just cut the moss and I lay it on the bottom in a thin layer and is growing like crazy. Once a week I will spray it with some diluted fertilizer 😊
Sma glad to hear you have success growing your moss, I’m sure there are many ways to cultivate moss but for some it’s a difficult process, I’ve tried a lot of ways from watching RUclips videos and some do not work and a lot of people give up. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Can i ask where do you get your sphagnum from? Do you purchase it from a vendor or collect it in the wild?
We have a local pond which has moss growing all over so I just get a small bag full, last week I noticed the council was raking it all up to compost it, what a waste but they said it always grows back early summer.
I can't seem to get any live green Psagnum anywhere on line. I've bought two lots from e bay and etsy but it's always brown mushy Psagnum. I've had bad luck trying to get it.

That’s what I use it for Geoff but I honestly thought people knew how it was done and I did watch a few videos about a year ago and they all failed so tried my own way and found it worked, but you do need a quantity of live moss to start you off and keep it covered.
For your video as today very interesting knowing you we can grow moss if we need to hopefully love You’re a greenhouse always looks nice clean tidy and bright thank you for sharing happy growing
Andrea I just appreciate people watching and I'm not talking to my self LOL. I was quite surprised when I found out people were struggling so I thought I'd share my way at least I know it works. I always try to keep the greenhouse tidy because I aways forget were I've put something when I need it.

Julie the kids will love it, just remember you need a little patience for it to start growing, glad you enjoyed the video and when I’m out and about the poo bags come in handy for collecting various items.
I think some of the difficulties in growing spaghnum moss might be bc there’s over 300 different spaghnum mosses, so those probably don’t all like to grow in the exact same environment and a growing method/set up that might work beautifully with one species of sphagnum moss might lead to a failure with another. But if you can get some from someone who grows it with instructions, you get to skip the experimental stage.
I totally agree with you that there are different types of sphagnum moss however if you grow using my method and are patient, give it good light, and keep it moist you’ll succeed.
Loved the video and started drooling seeing all your sphagnum moss. I live in Brisbane Australia where it's pretty hot. I will definitely try your method of trimming the shoots and planting over dried sphagnum. Cheers and thanks.

I've propagated quite a lot through the winter enough for all my nep trays and its so easy once you obtain a small amount of live sphagnum and remember to keep it moist.

I mounted a staghorn fern and an orchid with what was meant to be live stagnum moss. It's actually growing in places. Your video is a great help Mike! As I now understand it takes time.

Keep it covered and use Rain or RO water and you’ll have no problem.
@@MicksMasdevalliaorchids I live by the sea. The rain here leaves quite a lot of residue on the windows, I worry about any salt/sand in the rainwater so I use distilled...
@@ryecatcher1670 that’s a personal choice buddy and I’m sure you’re right to use distilled water but you’ll have no problem growing it this way just be patient and keep it watered.
Hi mate. Excellent video, thanks. I was to say watching halfway through the video that you are basically recreating a bog environment pretty much. Will try this method, less the “go to woods and get some moss”. Not here in Australia 😂

Ed I tried a few methods over the years but they all failed miserably, I’ve been using this way for over a year and to be honest I thought everyone was using this method, only realised when some viewers made comments so I thought I’d share and help them out, glad you enjoyed it and I’m sure you’ll have success.

I saw you did a short for your Utricularia Bisquamata. Can you do a video on your collection and how you grow them?
It needs ALOT of really bright indirect light
Excellent video. I also tried the usual methods without success , i.e . wet peat in a tray and shredded sphagnum. or in a sealed clear container. Since I grew some dish gardens it worked (in my greenhouse). Some things I’ve learned . 1. Keep out of sun, even some shade helps. 2. It took much longer to see noticeable results than the 5 weeks most people assume. More like 8 months. 3. I always use rain water only and keep constantly topped up and wet.
It really is a good method once you’ve started it keeps growing and producing.
@@MicksMasdevalliaorchids Yes. There is a finer moss which in time actually grows on the peat in my pots I have my Venus flytraps in which is nice too. I also recently made a large dish garden of gritstones and unusual mosses I collected when I was visiting the Lake District . I think some of it is fern moss.

I start drosera andromeda leaf cuttings in dead long fiber sphagnum moss and the moss usually starts growing after a few months. I too keep the pot covered to maintain humidity, I think that's the key. Good video Mick, cheers from N.E. U.S.!
Thank you and glad to hear you are having success growing sphagnum unfortunately some people aren’t and I used to be one of them but I can honestly say it works for me, and you right about covering it which does help with the humidity and once it’s established I remove the lids.
I bought live moss online and it's growing in with my droseras. It gets black tips on some of the tops as it grows.
Great news, give it plenty of light and just have a little patience it’ll soon be thriving.
Very helpful video. I wonder if you could transplant it into the garden to grow on? I would like to grow a larger quantity. My soil is heavy clay. Moss grows in my lawn😕
You could try it in a sheltered part of your garden I grow it it trays just because I use small amounts just remember it needs to be constantly moist and watch birds they take it for nest making so you may need a small net over it. Good luck and thanks for watching.
And yes. Those dead moss will eventually produce live moss eventually!
Hi Mick Just found your channel. Is good that you are in England because we have same weather. I think some methods don't work because is different temperatures.
Just started with carnivorous plants. Bought them because about 1 month ago I bought orchid bark from a online shop. Probably it came with gnats larvae and my house was of these little pests. (Got others disease from this bark too)
My question is. The short moss we found around works to decorate the carnivorous too? And grow in this method too?

Margaret I just grow it in the greenhouse on a lower shelf a it’s worked for me I’m sure it would grow on a windowsill and once you’ve acquired some live moss it’s really easy so long as it’s always got water in the tray and you keep it covered until it’s established. I just got fresh sphagnum from the wild, growing for mounting orchids would take too much time. I'm fortunate to have five big gardens where I can harvest 😁
Here in the UK it’s not widely available locally there are a few areas that I know but people never give out locations so you either have to buy it or cultivate it your self, and without keep getting my feet wet so I grow my own.

To be honest Lisa, they are called mini propagation trays, so really any small seed tray with a lid will do the job just as well. I’m sure they would be available in the US.

Mine are off eBay here in the UK quite cheap really and very easy to store I’m sure you’ll have similar in the states.
Benjiplants on RUclips grows New Zealand sphagnum moss quite well from the block.
Hi Mick, thank you for the video. I've been growing sphagnum from live moss I took from a bog, and it's definitely growing, but the new shoots are super leggy. I would love for it to be as full as the one you show in the video. Do you ever have a problem with legginess? Thx!
It happened to me once so I just removed the cover and it slowed down and recovered and carried on growing.

I’m assuming putting water in the outer tray is for humidity? But if the trays are completely sealed, how will the humidity get in? Or do you mean add the water after you open the valve?
I add the water for both humidity and moisture content I’ve realised that the base layer must remain wet giving of a bog simulation for healthy growth.
What kind of tray are you using? And where did you purchase it. I live in canada and I don't know of any bogs with that kind of moss growing. Thanks for the info.
Linda any small tray with a cover will do mine was off eBay really cheap, as for moss in Canada I'm sure you have some local growers who may give or sell you a small amount to start you off that's all you need to establish a growing colony.
So, when you harvest it, do you just pull the top off or do you try to get right down to the level of the peat?
I pull it out so that the lower part of the moss is white in colour, which is usually submerged and thats what I've used.
How does sphagnum survive winters? Do i need to keep it in an above freezing greenhouse?
I leave mine in the greenhouse all winter but I do cover it with some fleece cloth during the colder months here in the UK and just stand it on damp capillary matting, to be fair mine once froze solid like a brick but survived .
When you find a live Speckman wash and bring it inside, do you clean it or take it with the dirt? How would you clean it?
I rinse it under a hose and then start laying it like in video but be patient it can take a few weeks to get established

I think peat moss is a natural re occurring sustainable resource which has been used for thousands of years in different forms, but I do agree we need to look at alternative products. Thanks for the sub.
I just read that it is the harvesting of it in the natural environment causes some potential forest fire side effects not the moss itself.
Can I use old moss again?
If you’re talking about reusing it for top dressing yes 👍 sometimes I just trim it with scissors and start the process again.
hello, I recently got some sphagnum for my outdoor bog garden in nevada (hot). although the soil never dries out, I am worried the sphagnum will. Any tips?
Glad to hear you’ve got a bog garden I’m unsure with regards to your weather conditions but you might find a little shade does wonders for sphagnum moss, if you see the tops drying out or scorching you’ll definitely need to shade it mines in a greenhouse environment so it seems to do well but again it’s a controlled environment could you relocate your bog garden or erect a shade sail or similar, hope this helps and enjoy your bog garden.

Tom most garden centres sell small seed trays with lids I've also seen them on eBay.

I’ve never experienced mold on my sphagnum moss so I can only suggest removing the cover to allow good air movement and reduce the amount of water in the tray just keep it moist. It’s got to be something in your growing environment that’s causing mold. Hope this helps a bit.
All the smegma moss that I buy in the store never seems to look right. It looks like it’s brown and spoiled and smells like mildew. I don’t want to order online. What else can I do?
You need to keep it moist and with good light or You could try and buy a small quantity off eBay to get you started look for live Sphagnum moss and grow it on like in my video.
Your point about creating a mini bog is spot on … but I would like to discourage people from taking things from natural areas as natural areas are struggling enough as it is …
I only remove a small amount (handful) of moss from the waters edge to get started thats all you need, where I live the local authority annually remove the sphagnum moss to prevent it from over growing and say it reduces other aquatic plants from surviving.
ive gotten it to regrow in a super humid dart frog viv for a bit. on the wall. Been lookin for a bit of live ever after losing it, harder than it seems. Never been able to resurrect it in a pot. btw, anyone else horrified for a second that he was going to bare hand pull a turd out that bag?
I did laugh when someone else said that about the Bag but needs must, if your struggling why not buy a small amount of live moss from a reptile store and grow that on the same way its really easy when it gets established.
I should just go ahead and order some. I guess I've just got it in my head that with enough patience I can turn dead plants into live plants lol. I came to see if you had the secret sauce. I have recently started growing drosera and LOVING it. easily propagate from leaves onto sphagnum. I breed aquatic animals and plants and dart frogs. Hello, does it grows better with heat or cold?
I just grow it in a temperate greenhouse which stays between 7-10°c in a winter, but never let it dry out.

Poaching moss from a bog is not OK.
We don’t have that sort of bog here in the UK the moss grows on the edge of large ponds which is freely available because the local authorities “council” just use tractors and pull it all out every year and compost it down.
