Disney Sued Over Faking Box Office - Investors Seek Revenge

  • Disney are once again in a terrible position as things have somehow gotten worse for Disney as a studio, due to investors now reportedly suing Disney for lying about their finances and possibly the profits of their movies! Once again Disney have looked for excuses for their multiple failures from the MCU to Star Wars including The Marvels being the biggest flop in MCU history. This is just another case of Disney not taking accountability for their failures and trying to cover them up, but this time it's worse as they lied to their own Disney investors.

Wall Street calls this “Managing Earnings”. This refers to decisions by the CFO to use their discretion when closing the quarterly books. Keep in mind, that Managing Earnings isn’t sustainable. The actual numbers will always reveal themselves over time. Just ask Enron.

Disney leadership doesn’t care if audiences like their woke content. Disney leadership wanted to make woke content a standard. They wanted to strand audiences without any choice. They don’t care if they destroy the once family-friendly company. That was always part of the goal.

Consider how over-coddled and overindulged these first world brats were raised to expose their arrested development.
This is the only way to explain their child-like, 100% self-serving concept of "fairness" with moving goalposts, plus the victim complex peppered-in. A camera and attention addiction made them so self-obsessed they can ONLY live vicariously through themselves, which explains the blatant shoehorning/self-inserts. Kicking down everyone else's sandcastles gives them a fleeting dopamine hit and then they see themselves as the clear winner by default.

I guess the faking of their numbers happened already before Endgame. I remember very well when I and a friend of mine fell for the "Captain Marvel will reveal important information for Endgame" marketing, so we went into a movie that we wanted to skip. When we ordered the Tickets, it was basically sold out with 2 of the prime seats being strangely open, but we didn't ask questions at this point. The questions came when we were the only 2 people in a sold out theater.
This was the first time where the thought of Disney faking numbers came up to me.

    • @ErwinFox

Scrapbooking is part of it: shooting a lot of footage they're never going to use. Hiring more people than they need for effects to get it done fast. Hiring inexperienced directors or ones who never made big budget Hollywood films (like the feminist documentary direction who likes to "make men uncomfortable"), so they have no clue how to shoot efficiency and probably end up shooting on twice the days they need to. Reshooting when an initial cut sucks (The Marvels). All the editing in a desperate attempt to save them. "Sensitivity readers" in the planning stages of the scripts to make the movies as gay and lame as possible, etc.

@SilverViper1000 Woke movies literally put Diversity Equity and Inclusion as their absolute number one priority. So it absolutely is the problem because they will hire based on Race, ethnicity, Minority, sexual preferences etc, and then force the stories to fit that dynamic with whoever is left to write such garbage which is far slimmer pickings these days because anyone who don't tow the line has been fired.
The Number one job skill these days for a director for an up and coming 300 MILLION DOLLAR ACTION movie, Is a Feminist who has directed a documentary about men being misogynistic throughout history.
And then blame men for not watching the movie.

People have been speculating about this at least since Captain Marvel became a billion dollar movie with how many empty theater pictures people were posting online...
It's not just the poor quality content that's killing them, it's their method of making movies in general. Their budgets get ballooned because they don't start making their movies with a clear creative vision in mind going into it. They make movies by committee, so they treat the actual production like a micromanaged rough draft that they'll edit and change in post production based on which version gets the least negative response in focus testing. Then they make their VFX teams do new effects to replace old ones again and again for each version of new scenes they add or change without giving them a whole lot of extra time that they need to do it well. I've heard their on-set catering is supposedly through the roof as well. Movies like Dune Part Two and especially Godzilla: Minus One and The Creator prove that you can make quality special effects on sub-$200 million budgets, and at least two of those were great movies. Regardless of what you think aboht any one of those movies, they proves that you can save money simply by having a clearly defined creative vision from the start and try to do it right the first time in production so that you don't need to rework everything in post (or require as few reshoots as possible).

it's so bizarre to actually witness this.
i Remember the Disney renaissance period, absolute bangers around every corner, even the flopped movies like Treasure Planet were breathtaking.
Disney had this.... this unmatched quality. The score, the surroundings, the characters, the chemistry.
It just worked, like no one could get it to work. It was like magic, especially as a kid growing up back then.
And now they throw that empire that's about 100 year in the making down the drain, because they wan't to satisfy the proper connections/investors, despite that being their definite end.
And i still don't understand why, they don't just satisfy the ESG-scores, they make the whole movie bland and boring.
Even the kids i know today agree that they like most old Disney movies more.
If i don't watch it being an older fan, and the kids will forget the mediocre movies within a year, then who is this for?
Disney became like this snowpiercer train, building up speed non-stop, until one day, the rails end at a cliff or mountain foot.

And this is the thing with the entertainment industry, you can have 90 years of bangers and amazing things, it might even save you for 1 year of bad things, but the moment you start making flop after flop for like, 5-10 years in a row? It hits rly hard. That's how the entertainment industry goes.

I appreciate CGI when it's executed skillfully. However, some filmmakers seem to rely on CGI as a quick fix, neglecting the essential elements that truly captivate audiences. It's as if they believe impressive visual effects alone can compensate for weak writing, shallow character development, and a story that prioritizes messages over substance. But audiences aren't fooled by just flashy effects. We can tell when a movie's missing heart and depth.

It’s always been hilarious how the movie studio has enough unmitigated gal to suggest that the reason people aren’t going to see their movie is because we as movie watcher are somehow toxic. If your movie doesn’t set that standard of audience interest. we as watcher of film are not gonna put down almost $20 for your stupid movie if you’ve made a bad product. The toxicity is not coming from us - it’s coming from the studio, who think that they have made absolute perfect movie one in fact, the story they came up with is absolutely disjointed to the point where it’s literally unwatchable not to mention embarrassing to those of us who have a critical thinking standard for the storytelling that we appreciate. If you put $200 million into a movie turn around and call us toxic. I don’t know how you think you’re gonna win anybody over by putting out inferior product and then on the backend call us the film connoisseur’s toxic for not watching your bad product. Ego at its absolute worst.

Investors are what killed this industry. They're basically loan sharks. They provide and make promises of profit to Disney, so Disney bows to their every whim. The focus is on profits, not entertainment. Disney's forgotten its purpose in the industry. So, making good movies first over movies designed to pander to a large audience in hopes of raking in profits is not going to be in the cards for them unless they get rid of the investor and focus on being an entertainment giant who forges ahead on their own merits like they did in the old days.

You can't just fire 80% of your workforce. Disney will eventually downsize to fit the amount of money they can make with the talent they have. They just haven't figured out what that size is yet, they're only as big as they are now because of how well they did prior to all the DEI hires.

The reason why Disney fails is much more simple. All the things Jesse mentions are the symptoms - not the reason. They became a feminist propaganda company which doesn't care about the story, the audience or anything but just putting the message from their personal manifesto everywhere without much bother. Same issues were with ussr cinematography but it worked cuz a) Iron Curtain prevented peopel from watching really good films and they had no choice, b) movie goers were much less experienced and enjoyed the primitive movies that came out. Same issues with russian classical literature of 19th centure: boring plot if any, dumb and flat characters which you hate as a reader, no explanations but lots and lots of philosophy which mostly sounds liek prpaganda. And it actually was! And just as feminism does propagande many pretty dumb points, russian classical writers also did it in their own way. So once the art becomes a weapon of promitive propaganda it stops being enjoyable cuz the creators don't care about the quality of a story or the comfort and joy of their audience - all they care about is putting as much message as possible and that really sucks

I presume Disney owe an enormous debt to a bank and they're servicing the interest on the debt rather than pay the debt off. I imagine they're using their back catalogue of assets as insurance that they'll keep servicing the debt. I imagine that they've sorted the legal aspects so that when this comes to light, each individual employee bears no responsibility - they'll leave with golden parachutes.
