On the morning of Aug 31st, 1985, I was 15 years old and that morning my older stepbrother, who was going to the concert with 3 friends, told me one of them backed out and asked if I wanted to buy his ticket. I was a *huge* Metallica fan but I knew I couldn't miss my mom's annual birthday brunch with the family, so I declined. My mother somehow found out, bought the ticket for me and told me to have a good time. Up until then I'd only seen Eddie Money and The Little River Band in concert, so this concert just blew my freaking mind. - Thanks mom!
I was there as well. One of the best shows I've seen, and I've seen hundreds of metal concerts.
that’s awesome man
Cheers up for mom😊😊😊
Best mom of the year ❤

Therwcis no peace for disbeleovers on the next world.. there is only peace for true monotheists muslims
I try to imagine telling a club owner in their early 1981 days, "Please play this song when we come out, The Ecstasy of Gold". The owner's like "There are four people here at Greasy Tony's Pizza Palace and two are bartenders."
💀
They been doing it since the kill em all tour I know for sure. Idk if they did it at the small clubs in the beginning not sure
Virtually impossible to not tap my feet or keep my knee from involuntarily rocking to the beat. This is a peak moment for the band
Same here. Can't help it, the Energy still translates thru the screen
It's really good but Def not "peak" moment they had alot of amazing moments up till 91 even after that.
No Cliff, no Metallica.@@midnight347
It’s getting pretty difficult to not headbang to this or bop my head
...long live Clifford Lee Burton!... 🤘🤘
"OH YEAAAAHHHH! ?? FUCKING RIDE THE LIGHTNING!"
Must have been nice to wake up that morning, go drive down to the oakland stadium, play the gig, and then drive home.
Saw them in 86 long island coliseum the blew ozzy off the stage. Nobody wanted them to stop playing. Fans tearing seat cushions off chairs, it was insane. They were fast kicked ass!! Lars was a double bass beast then. Damage inc fast as hell! All songs were twice normal speed
Cocaine
I was at the Coliseum show. The whole place was shaking!! Unless you were there you will never know!

I was 17 years old and it my first concert too. What a show!

I think the same thing bro! 🤘🏻🍻🇨🇱
I've still got long hair, 18 in81 an I've still got zero fUCKS given except for The Metal Family I recognize, not the drunken losers, all be iti drink but know when To Go, and just relish at taking in these cats at 60, where as I'm still in shape, long hair, all my METAL FACALTIES, LOL AND JUST Dig reliving our youth together. These guys are distant family an Woah to anybody who FUCKS with em. Take care fellow METAL Head
PS I've got their 1 of500 copies of their Double album called Assassin's. NOT BRAGGING AS EGOS AND POSERS CAN FUK RIGHT OFF BUT FIGURED ID SHARE A LITTLE METAL PEDIGREE ASCLIFFS ON THIS DOUBLE ALBUM.RIP CLIFF,MISS YOU MAN
aging, death every day is closer. i don't want to die :(
@@Corleone007 fine peace in god.
I got to see them in April of ‘86 at The Spectrum in Philly. Went to see Oz, but left a dedicated Metallica fan for life. I remember when they came on and just took over. The velocity of their live performance was nothing I’ve ever seen before. I remember after they finished, I went to the merch stand and bought my first Metallica t-shirt. Don’t get me wrong, Oz was phenomenal, but Metallica absolutely stole the show. I remember that weekend I bought “Master of Puppets”, “Ride the Lightning”, “Kill ‘Em All” and if memory serves me correctly, the “Jump In the Fire” picture disc. A revelation for a young 12 year old.
Damn, you were lucky. First time I saw em was at the Spectrum in March 1997.
I saw that show in Jersey
@@TheGravygun I thought COC blew em off stage
@@bathory5026and so it goes
Damn! Cliff is the best headbanger ever!
Best all in one. Youth, energy, unique style, something new, and that young Hetfield's voice.
The best Metallica Era Ever!🔥🤘🏻
I was at this Day on the Green. Victory, Yngwie Malsteen, Metallica, Y&T, Ratt and the Scorpions. We were there to see Metallica. After the show we drove down to Santa Cruz and partied on the beach. Crashed in the back of my buddy's truck only to be woken up by the park rangers telling us we couldn't camp there. Not sure where we slept, but the next day we ended up at a college frat BBQ on the beach. They were pretty cool considering we were all long hair metal heads.
I’m from Santa Cruz but missed this concert. I’ve seen hundreds of concerts growing up in Santa Cruz Y&T in particular love Santa Cruz I’ve seen them more times than I can count here. I’m 63 now and still rockin to metal!❤😊
Lightning fingers Burton over here lol
I wish I would have seen this show! My first experience with Metallica was the following year in 86 on the Master of Puppets-Damage Inc Tour in Long Beach June 13,14,and 15. They opened for OZZY on his Ultimate Sin tour. Absolutely fucking amazing! RIP CLIFF ❤️🎸😎🙏🏻✝️
Been seeing tallica shows since 88.....extacy of gold still gives me literal goosebumps. Cause you know what's coming
Same here. Metallica hands down knows how to start a rock concert better than anyone
Mom: Why do you want long hair? Me: 15:40
so honored to have seen cliff live! 85-86 my life was changed by this band
Bro I would give my life to see early Metallica from 85-86
RIP Cliff
Same here! Saw my first Metallica concert back in ‘83 when Mustaine was still their lead. Me and my mates biked down to the venue last minute and bought tickets for only 10 bucks. They were cheap in the glory days. Went to this concert too in ‘85, definitely my favourite concert yet.
Cliff is a beast with that tornado of hair surrounding his face … fuckin bad ass!
This concert was EPIC, no doubt! 🙄
Watching Cliff Burton playin'bass so furiously is gratifying for any METALHEAD and the rest of the band were full force driven...
And I truly miss that ''crazy bashing head Alcoholica J.Hetfield'' ripping the pillage apart on stage just like that... Holy shit... Time is cruel fellas!!
Anyway, THANKS Metallica🤘🤘💯
Yeah Awesome !!!!! Many Thanks For Sharing this Gem ❤️👍.
🤟😎
Yeah Awesome!
In the 80s Metallica were the Kings of Thrash.
Thanks for sharing this gem.
Hell Yeah!
Cheers!
Dude.. they're not only the kings of thrash no matter era, MetallicA is one of the greatest bands that EVER walked on freaking Earth regardless music's genre.
They're bigger than any rock movement or Metal scene... Not even Rolling Stones, The Beatles or Led Zeppelin's stood active for as long on the road as them till nowdays including just to give you an idea
Fuckin Cliff👍🏻 !!! Fuckin Metal Bass 🎸Player 👍🏻!!! No Cliff No Metallica !!! ……More & more , want him play fuckin fast & aggressive bass🎸 . Too Early To Die 😢. Also bout me , the same to Cliff , 1962 born .……Fuckin thanx for this fuckin movie !!!………Metallica of this time , Fuckin Rules👍🏻 !!! Metallica of now , Fuckin Sucks 👎🏻!!! Coz, left from Metal . ☝
So Effin amazing ,And it's basically 40 years ago
60fps footage from 1985 just feels so surreal
Love everyone head banging instead of standing there with their cell phones! Those were the days!❤😊
We naturally lived in the moment instead of trying to record it.
True that
@@crashburn3292because everyone didn't have tiny cameras in their pockets. If they did they would have done the same damn thing
Xactly
Well... recording the "moment" is imo fine if you wanna flex you've been to the concert or if you want to relive that moment again. This kind of stuff is much better (and cheaper) than any kind of merch you could get during the concert.
I swear cliffs right hand was not human
The Picture quality looks freakin awesome for being taken 40 years ago. !
Cliff's hair doesn't even look real, it looks like some sort of Pixar CGI monster on his head.
Im still trying to process that Cliff is gone,R.I.P Cliff
It’s been almost 40 years apparently you’re not going to
Scorpions, Ratt, Metallica, Rising Force (Yngwie Malmsteen)...
What a lineup damn.
Cliff era insano no baixo. PQP!
How much has cost see him performing at that time? This is amazing
See 8:51 if you want the local weather report for that day.
They came, they seek and they destroyed! 🤘
Rockin with them since early 80's, im60now and still in shape, long hair, give a shit attitude and just a fuknkillerselectionof vintage Metallica albums, love ke 1 of 500 double album, Assasins with cliff andi couldn't have put I more DESERVING: THEY SEEKED AND DESTROYED..GOD BLESS
Can actually hear Cliff's bass, sounds incredible. It's the Cliff show.
So i skipped forward to around 11:10 and where is the bass
I was at this concert! Day on the Green concerts were awesome! Autograph, Yngwie, Metallica, Y&T, Ratt, Scorpions! That was the line-up. It took a minute for Metallica to lock in as a unit. I remember Kirk was out of tune for a song. The red ice chest has Heineken in it! Thanks for the upload! Good times as a 20 year old!
Autograph 😂...Turn up the Radio. Ratt was probably pretty good back then as were the Scorpions. I wonder what Yngwie was like..
I don't remember Autograph, just some band name Victory. But for sure Metallica was still green and out of tune.....but always in time. Haha. I saw them twice on the Lightn' tour. 19 years old. Glad I was alive to see it.
@@stuartewoldt1513 Yngwie was good. Rising Force was a pretty tight band.
Oh dont break our metal hearts dear poster, its really the full? You know, some say the real full of Day on the Green is hidden and not shared to public including the Yngwie's performance. All the best🤘
8:50-8:57 even cameraman lost his control
When did Cliff start sawing the bottom wing off?
The only enjoyable part of this video was actually getting to see Cliff Burton play bass
Thanks for this!!! I was there and I haven't seen a lot of this footage!! Such an amazing and classic show...
James voice has more distortion than the guitar itself 😂
Were the cameras not working for certain parts of the concerts or something?
They only have audio from certain parts this is pieced together from different sources I'm pretty sure
The part where James introduces Cliff and Cliff proceeds to tear a rip into space 🤘🏼🎸🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
damn whats with that tone did they forget to turn on their overdrive pedal or something lol
Nice shot of the rig at 4:30. Anyone want two identify all the units?
Cliff
I been around a long time and TO NOT FILM AN ENTIRE PRODUCTUON FUCKEN ESCAPE S WORDS FROM ME.
Right on my rock ‘n’ roll Brothers rockers
Este es el verdadero metálica que nunca vere!... Donde arrojaban sudor, cerveza y rock. Ahora arrojan pelotas playeras!
Hell yeah I was 15 and had a blast...good times! Scorpions fucking rocked.
Imagine telling these guys one day you will play with lady Gaga 😂
I was 51 days old and 25 miles away in San Francisco’s Excelsior district during this performance…. It wasn’t meant to be. :’(
Burton se llevó a metallica con él.
Being da founder of Exodus Kirk shouldn't left,,n Dave should b da lead guitarist.....
18:17 just look how much passion and care Cliff had for the band and the music, with his moves and all haha. So sad we lost such a legend.
It’s a fucking shame that we never got the full performance. If I’m not mistaken, MTV shot the entire ‘Day On the Green’ festival and did the interviews with James and Lars.
Everyone say hi to Cliff!!!
"everyone...hi, cliff!"
Hi Cliff
Tenho Os albuns do METALLICA em vinil e sinceramente os caras são fodas.
é uma pena não ter esse concerto completo com imagens.
Damn they were radical. It is hard now to explain to someone what that was like - when they came along. It was all over quick though when they lost Cliff. Never as good again. Can't lose a guy like AND Dave Mustaine and still be close to what your potential was. Just can't.
It was far from over when they lost cliff, and didn’t need Dave to begin with
@@tommilitello198 Absolutely! Cliff was a once in a generation talent but Jason and Rob have been worthy successors. And thank god Dave got fired so we got 2 great bands instead of just 1.
Wow now i realize how much cliff was lowered in the mix on studio albums
❤CLIFF❤
His neck the next day💀
i wish there was more video of this concert😢😢😢
James Hetfield is definitely the only guy who looks better at 60 than at 22
The ecstasy of gold opening is awesome.
39 años después a unos días de volver a verlos en el Wanda metropolitano aquí en Madrid
I would've absolutely no doubt in my thrash loving mind totally see them back in the 80's
RIP Cliff,,lead bassist of Metallica
Look at Cliff rocking it! 🤘
One of the guitars was out of tune during Creeping, that was too bad.
My favorate is all there songs even im younger than them there greatest of all rock band
James’s voice is one of the main reasons this band was so huge. Riffs and songs are great, but his voice was always so commanding
His voice is my favorite thing to hear in these 85-89 videos
His voice was awesome till about 95. His style of singing was brutal. But I'm glad we still have him none the less.
James voice got sucks when he think hes good at vocals (black album)
@@meeralhyticus2834 makes no fucking sense speak right 😭
@@mikeortiz9664 i think you u derstand my point, 90s james vocal sucks
Ultimate Metallica Era!!
Gracias por esta joya de video.
This was my first concert I went to where I had my first homosexual experience 👍
Context please
@@pedrovictorfreire9450clearly when Cliff ripped up his bass solo the dude blew a gasket😂
Who cares? 0 ppl
You made yourself a target by wearing a Slayer shirt. It's no wonder. 😂
When they were a Metal band !
James’ guitar sounds like it barely has any distortion at all. It’s almost a clean tone. Super weird
When I was 13 I got hold of a bootleg Cliff em all vhs that rolled and oh it was bad ass terrible. Anyway you guys remember it cut off right at the 4th chord intro to horseman? I think about back then my buddies and me were all like talking how great it would have been to see the whole concert...but then other footage cuts in...anyway I remember that shit. See em first time 89 justice we were fuuuuuuuuuuqed up but I still remember..hehe!
Metallica had that stage presence from the start!
Quella catasta di 4x12 è assurda ne ho contati ben 15.. Mi correggo
. In realtà sono 9 oer chitarra e i restanti cabinet sono per basso
James's guitar has no bite whatsoever. Where's the gain ?
Bello/Magnifico.😭✡️✡️✡️✡️✡️✡️
Man ofcourse i had to be born in the age of autotune and taylor swift
5:30 Those expressions are what makes him a total genius
It’s obvious that Metallica was Cliffs band.
The Music Sounds Like if They Were on a Demo Tape
Dios bendiga al camarografo, que se puso del lado de Cliff y grabo estas tomas impresionantes.
@16:00 James has some Skeleton fingers going on.☠️ cool
It still amazes me just how bad their tone was back in the day. All mid no crunch but nevertheless badass
Cliff was a unique bassist but if he had lived I’m sure Lars and James would’ve fired him! Cliff was a killer guitar player and song writer as well, which is why they would’ve fired him
In opinion, I believe Cliff wrote at least 80% of ride the lightning & master of puppets.
Cliff passed in '86, And Justice For All released in '88. So there is also a possibility AJFA was Cliff's "left-overs".
The reason why I believe this is because the Black Album is garbage (no early metallica sounds).
@@thecrossedtheroadfund4289cliff wrote what he was credited on. Get out of here with this fn nonsense. Metallica has always been James and Lars driving the ship. Cliff had alot more input than the bassists after him ans cliff taught James about harmonizing and other stuff but what you are saying is complete nonsense. The only thing on justice cliff wrote was the middle of to live is to die and the poem James reads on the same song and he's credited for those things. They loved cliff ecsp James they would never not give him credit where it's due. People like you with your made up bs fairy tale crap trying to spread hate towards the remaining members of Metallica by worshiping cliff and dissing on them every chance you get make me sick. They were just young and hungry then man. Most bands make their best shit early in their career. That just happened to be the time cliff was with the band. You're making connections where there are none. Justice and the black album are absolute classics. Load even has alot of good stuff it just isn't "thrash"...the last 3 studio albums have been awesome and they returned to form so to speak. Cliff would be so proud of what they've become.
@@thecrossedtheroadfund4289the black album is a classic album top to bottom and has very good song writing, lyrics and riffs. Get off the "omg only old Metallica is good" bandwagon and open your damn ears.
They were like brothers and never would have fired cliff.post something showing what a great rhythm or lead guitar player cliff was
Damn this was a GREAT Day on the Green! Over 4 months into my 20th year, we drove in from Sacramento for this one. Still have chills from Metallica's set that day...what an absolutely awesome metal moment for the band and all of us there! Metal Up Your ASS!
James has more distortion than his guitar
very good thank you!
