Love James' voice here, that short time span before the Justice Tour where it changed again. He still had a small part of the KEA/RTL era in him at this point but was already developing into something else.
I was there! I was 17. It was a mindblowing change of paradigm...and for this reason a deep cut /essential/unforgettable. The (never heard) riffs stood in the air like they were physical. Friends of mine drove to a Damned concert that evening, but i had to go to the Loreley. Thank God I knew what to do.
49:54 That's probably the first time I've seen a live version of this song where James actually says "seek & destroy". Usually he lets the crowd sing that. It really serves as a song to get the people hyped.
i love this crowd. everytime james gives shout, they instantly repeat "hey hey hey hey" he even recoginzes their passion and gives them extra "heys" so they start chanting again. wonderful communication
The concept of anybody getting to hear Disposable Heroes in 1985 blows my mind. Even though it was only like 6 months before the album came out. I dunno I guess I'm narrow minded.
Druffmaul they pretty much had the demo for puppets done by then. Its pretty close to the finished product with only a few parts here and there arranged differently. Check it out, its on youtube.
Narrow is harsh but perhaps accurate. Bands of all flavors often push songs live prior to recording them. Remember that in order to get a good song down pat, it takes a hell of a lot of rehearsal and, there are a lot of benefits by honing the songs live.
Sometimes when I watch clips like this I feel, like Metallica died with Cliff. But then again I think of how hard it is to remain this angry and vital and perfectionistic (and maybe young) once you made it to the top. Might be, they would have become what they are today even if Cliff would have lived on. I feel nothing but big respect for such a long and history changing carreer like they did. I don't know if I would have the strenght to recover myself if I was them. Big cheers to them.
Cliff was the real deal, no doubt about it, but for my gods....metallica make one killer record after him, and the most succesfull record in the history of metal... is complicated. IMO they lost the touch after AJFA, but is their choice. They choice make only 4 records with new music in 25 years, they choice try (and fault) to redefine trends , they choice make big money, the endless tours....they choice kick out jason.... IMO, they are one of the biggest bands on earth but for the past. The new record is not so good, the problem is the new music....they need to release more often.... they can play live faster and in good shape and i think they can make cool music again but they need to be more in form in the studio, cut the crap with the bussines for a while and make music again....
My mates and I used to piss ourselves at the line in this performance of The Four Horsemen which says "Famine". It always sounded to us like Cliff was shouting "Babba!". Once you know now, you'll never be able to hear it as anything other than Babba. lol
Cliff was full of passion in everything he wrote or co wrote and performed ...he is definitely a bass player that loves playing bass ...true metal legend
I used to think 86' but they were even crazier in 85'. James acts like he's possessed by some metal thrashing mad demon. Hearing Ktulu in late 84' and this show in 85', I've come to believe the RTL tour is Metallica at their most driven and frantic. They were still getting their sound and tightness down with KEA. This shit is on another level.
Man watching Disposable Heroes as one of their "New Song" teaser for their "New Album" coming out in Christmas is a freaking mind Flip. The energy they expelled in these early years resonates till today...
The part in "Disposable Heroes" during the second verse at 16:35 when Cliff joins Lars and just headbangs so friggin' hard...talk about a major stage high. Rest In Peace, Cliff!

Agree, Metallica was a fucking force to reckon with. The energy from them was intense. Unfortunately my first experience with Metallica was post Cliff Burton but they were just releasing Injustice for All and introducing Jason Newsted. It was in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas with 70,000 in attendance at the Monsters of Rock tour. It was the middle of the day as they were an opening band and holy shit, to see the amount of head bangers in broad daylight was insanity.
This was the first Lorelei Metalhammer Festival, which I organised as the publisher of Metalhammer UK and executive producer, also of the video. Thanks to my good relationship with Peter Mensch, I got Metallica to perform and also, a big exception, the rights to film them. Unfortunately, we had Micky Beresheim doing some crooked deals using the master recording Castle/Polydor Films had in possession.
Cocaine helped those legs go, go, go with the double kick ;) Lars's issue is he just never progressed from this point on, if anything he got stagnate and regressed.
Lars in early 90's: "When I was a kid I hated Rolling Stones drums, used to say 'this guy does nothing, listen to Neil Peart and Ian Paice, now that's druming', but now I realise Charlie Watts is the real deal". That explains a lot. I am a fan for a long time, and I did read this in an interview here in Brazil before the Load era. I still have the magazine
How did Cliff always look like he was headbanging in slow motion? Like...he moved just as fast as the others, but it took longer for his mass to be affected by gravity.
Right? It always looked that way to me too. It also looks like he's putting a little more of his shoulders and back into it, so it takes longer to complete each time. It's easier to see when the camera's on him and James at the same time.
Yea I know what you mean..The correlation of time signatures between each Metallica song and Cliff's subsequent head banging is deserving of a music theory course all on its own.
...They were so young then full of energy... ...an inspirations to many other young musicians that led to an evolution and formation of many other metal sub-genres. Wish there were more vids of Cliff and of when Mustaine was in the band. 🎼🗣️🎤🎸🥁🎶😍👍...

Love James' voice here, that short time span before the Justice Tour where it changed again. He still had a small part of the KEA/RTL era in him at this point but was already developing into something else.
Yeah... before he started sea captain mode.
I was there! I was 17. It was a mindblowing change of paradigm...and for this reason a deep cut /essential/unforgettable. The (never heard) riffs stood in the air like they were physical.
Friends of mine drove to a Damned concert that evening, but i had to go to the Loreley. Thank God I knew what to do.
opa loka records Where was this concert?
You are so fucking lucky
@@monetti22 at the loreley in germany
Venom was a headliner, right?...
\m/ That's all I can say about your comment.
49:54 That's probably the first time I've seen a live version of this song where James actually says "seek & destroy". Usually he lets the crowd sing that. It really serves as a song to get the people hyped.
This has to be one of the greatest performances of all time. The energy is unbelievable.
i love this crowd. everytime james gives shout, they instantly repeat "hey hey hey hey" he even recoginzes their passion and gives them extra "heys" so they start chanting again. wonderful communication
But they were super off beat :/
Fuck, Hammet's solos. This is why he is so respected. His solos in the 80s were second to none.
nocarro What? Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads are significantly better soloists and they're from the 80s too.
I agree. Get tired of seeing him get disrespected by Mustaine fan boys. Hammet was and still is damn good.
Just a few kids living the dream, man, I wish I was alive then, can’t believe this video is approaching 40 years
The concept of anybody getting to hear Disposable Heroes in 1985 blows my mind. Even though it was only like 6 months before the album came out. I dunno I guess I'm narrow minded.
Druffmaul they pretty much had the demo for puppets done by then. Its pretty close to the finished product with only a few parts here and there arranged differently. Check it out, its on youtube.
I heared harvester before it came out in 88' not the same but similar.
Big cheers to them.
look up their concert in Canada '86, just after cliff died, they were angrier than ever.
Probably the most aggressive concert ever.
+GumeShke Seattle 1989?
Classic comment...Metallica is great with and after Cliff
Jean-Luc Picard and justice was great and the black album too
Cliff was the real deal, no doubt about it, but for my gods....metallica make one killer record after him, and the most succesfull record in the history of metal... is complicated.
1:04:03 Cliff's backing vocals are awesome!!
This old shit is the fucking BEST! The kind of Metallica I grew up with. Awesome!
AMEN! or LIKEWISE! In my opinion, THIS is the ONLY (era of) Metallica that I need and that REALLY MATTERS!
Cliffs occasional backing vocals are fucking wicked!
wicked?
+Wardo Melena Correct!
( wik-Ed)
My mates and I used to piss ourselves at the line in this performance of The Four Horsemen which says "Famine". It always sounded to us like Cliff was shouting "Babba!". Once you know now, you'll never be able to hear it as anything other than Babba. lol
Sounds like a demon straight outta Hell.....or Jason who?
14:02 - why James will always be the best rhythmn guitarist ever. Machine gun precision.
James Hetfield, Izzy Stradlin and Malcolm Young are the best rhythm guitarists
Don’t forget Jeff Hannamen
Wtf? Dave Mustaine??
Fucking A right brother 👍👍
And don't forget Baldini, Scott Ian
6:09 me after being yelled at by my mom for not cleaning my room
12:49
Hahahahhahahahahahahah
This is too funny lmao
Cliff was full of passion in everything he wrote or co wrote and performed ...he is definitely a bass player that loves playing bass ...true metal legend
James has a bionic wrist! The stamina to play that fast, and to sing at the same time! What a talent!
1985 was DEFINITELY Metallica’s BEST YEAR!!! This performance was pure magic!!!
I dunno man. I saw them in seattle 88 and vancouver 92. both shows were awesome but the 92 was INSANE.
always the classic metallica era
I used to think 86' but they were even crazier in 85'. James acts like he's possessed by some metal thrashing mad demon. Hearing Ktulu in late 84' and this show in 85', I've come to believe the RTL tour is Metallica at their most driven and frantic. They were still getting their sound and tightness down with KEA. This shit is on another level.
I would say they peaked during the And Justice For All tour. But for the record, they were AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING since Day 1.
It's crazy Metallica we're the absolute masters of heavy guitar music in 84' to 86'
They are still awesome and I love their performances today but damn, the power of their youth was something else.
Their performance of Fight Fire With Fire is absolutely out of this world, and Lars drums like a beast! 1:00:10
Ch0yc3z No doubt. Jesus H Christ... I saw them around this time and they just laid waste to anything and everything.
holly shit!!
Lars coverd many concerts, James was not stupid , he always kept Lars in , smart move !
Also to mention how he went stupid at the end when James was trying to speak
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Now THIS is the Metallica I know and love!!
No, this is when you wish you were young as you were, but you still love Metallica
Haha I was 15 when they did this concert.
They are still amazing. They grew up
One of the greatest.bassist ever playing with what would turn out to be the greatest band to ever walk planet earth
This has to be one of their best performance! Ever
No. It's truly one of their worst.

James alternate picked on Creeping Death... something that never happens again!
For something filmed the way it was during the time it was, this actually sounds pretty damn nice
Man watching Disposable Heroes as one of their "New Song" teaser for their "New Album" coming out in Christmas is a freaking mind Flip. The energy they expelled in these early years resonates till today...
26:15 I think Cliff Adored James intensity. Never seen this before and I love it.
Hearing Cliff’s back up vocals, especially Four Horseman, still makes my hair stand up to this day.
Rest in peace Cliff!
Die you see Lars drumming at the ending of disposable heroes? God damn 😂
The part in "Disposable Heroes" during the second verse at 16:35 when Cliff joins Lars and just headbangs so friggin' hard...talk about a major stage high. Rest In Peace, Cliff!
16:45
They don't realize how lucky they were to see Cliff play.
Eu e meu amigo tínhamos completado exatos 15 anos e já curtíamos Metallica no Brasil. Inesquecível, vibrante e intenso como só a juventude que curtiu isso pode falar hoje em dia. Fantástico. RIP CLIFF!
This was definitely their heyday. 84 to 86. It's like experiencing a different band comparing to what came subsequently.
yes....you can understand why Jason took endless shit from these guys after we lost Cliff...because Cliff was so amazingly great!!1
Shawn C.
It's kinda strange how huge Cliff's influence in the band seemed to have been considering he has barely any credits to the songs.
what do you mean barely any credits? he wrote alot of that shit..definitely composed their coolest stuff...he taught them all..james said that..so did kirk...btw i agree, like a completely different band..sound and feeling is so different
ahhhhhhhhh shut up
Berwin Enzemann h
Holy shit, an early Metallica live recording, and I can actually hear Cliff's bass? This made my day, my week, month, year, life
Metallica's climax. 100% metal, no props, every band member focusing on their instrument and playing at their top level. Love it.
Every band has their golden time, this was their's.
Metallica had MANY golden times. But peak peak? Yeah this was it.
I was in the Soviet army at the time, at Northern Caucasus, and heard Metallica for the first time being there.
This will forever be the Metallica in my heart.
Cliff we can still hear your bass from the heavens..rest easy my friend
30 years ago today, R.I.P Cliff, we miss you man
Cliff em all is a classic! Had it on VHS back in the day. Played it so much till wore it out. Just amazing live footage of the old school Metallica.
I was 14 when they did this show. And around the same time my buddy turned me on to Ride The Lightning on Cassette Tape and I was blown away completely! It was the ultimate sound for a young rocker teenager to hear!
RIP Cliff Burton
you were at metal hammer?
These dudes were absolutely possessed back in the day! The power pouring out of these guy's does not come from our realm of existence 🤣 fucking brutal!!!!!!!! ALL HAIL OLD SCHOOL METALLICA
No it was from metalarealm where the boys were rulers of the world set to become gods of the trash metal the church of metallica of the land of no saints that spanned the early 80s peaking in the early 90s slowing due to james belting out these concerts and the death of cliff but stilla force to this day oh how id like to travel to this metalarealm true space and time and see this shit live metallliccccaaaa!
And THAT is why people went crazy over these guys.
19:11gets me every time. So fucking heavy
Goosebumps
There is James realy can do three things at the same time - play the guitar, sing and headbanging
Болотин Станисав and help Lars stay in time.......
The drums keep everyone on tempo, and determine it. bro
Болотин Станисав especially the part when the sound doesn’t match the video lol. Hell Yeahhh.
Well headbanging comes out naturally when you know the songs and how to play actually
Cliff can play classical piano pieces at light speed and still headbang
The sound on this is amazing.
Fantastic guitarist & singing at the same time, very hard to do. With his solo's & riffs;all together.
jame's voice at it's best !
Try their concert in Seattle 1989- Live Shit Binge & Purge. Jame's deeper, stronger voice sounds better.
Dude please ! I've got the live album " Live shit Pinge and Purge " also ! hahah .
i think he can hit the high screams during this era which makes his voice more powerful
yeah thats where i based my comment on !
George keenan Eh, I don't really like the high pitched screams that much.
Happy Birthday Cliff.... Always in our hearts 💕💕💕
The audience singing FWTBT... every word. Goosebumps!!
Fuck man, Lars' drumming is actually really goddamn brutal here. Never thought I'd say that in a million years
hahahahahahahahah you are right dude
He never sucked. He's just become lazy.
Cocaine helped those legs go, go, go with the double kick ;) Lars's issue is he just never progressed from this point on, if anything he got stagnate and regressed.
Started with Black Album it became more simplistic and at that point they really weren't playing Thrash so he didn't have to go all out.
Golden ages of metal. Sepultura, Metallica, Destructon., Pantera, Judas Priest, Slayer, Running Wild, Def Leppard.....Thank you my God, THANK YOU
39:11 One expression for everything we feel when we listen to their music
How did Cliff always look like he was headbanging in slow motion?
Like...he moved just as fast as the others, but it took longer for his
mass to be affected by gravity.
Best explanation of Cliff's (or any) headbanging that I have EVER heard!
Right? It always looked that way to me too. It also looks like he's putting a little more of his shoulders and back into it, so it takes longer to complete each time. It's easier to see when the camera's on him and James at the same time.
Yea I know what you mean..The correlation of time signatures between each Metallica song and Cliff's subsequent head banging is deserving of a music theory course all on its own.
cliff jajajajaja...esa webada.... parece metalero???......
someone should start a study about his headbanging!
I can't believe its been 35 years since we lost Cliff Burton we miss you so very much such an amazing bass player and song writer

indeed! it is mighty Metallica# well said......although i may have a hard time forgiving completely.......and i WAS lucky enough to see mighty Metallica live before Cliff died. it was the Master of Puppets tour in 1986.
lucky you!!! you watch the born of this some kind of monster metallica is......metallica is like black sabbath, the different band configuration gives us awsome era s, i like cliff era and newsted era as well.........
This era for James' voice is my fav...so powerful! \m/
i love watching the old shows with cliff. he was a really creative bass player, plus the old shows have the best set lists.
The reason the old shows had the best set list is because after 1987 Metallica changed their new songs couldn't compare.
Cliffs head banging is fucking insane
When you hear the ecstasy of gold, you know something amazing is about to happen

When Metallica ruled the world, they were miles ahead of everyone else.
