One of Metallica's first shows with James performing with the look we've come to know in the ...And Justice for All and Black Album era. All in black, with wristbands and a low pedestal. The most classic posture of the frontman.
35:38, my headphones explodes because of Lars. Holy Fuck!!!! What a fucking awesome performance of Lars during that era, during this show. Absolutely a fucking beast back to those days,.
James was the ultimate metal frontman back then. He's great even today however being a kid back then he was God to me. His rage, energy, angst and attitude was second to none. They were out to rip your head off back then. I still love it today!
He is more professional today and uses his voice and all that more to command crowd and speaks more because he is more confident today, but he didnt need all that back then, his raw energy was worth much more and was never matched again!!
This has got to be the TIGHTEST they've ever played. (Not to say they haven't before) So much fury and precision, this is beyond amazing. EVERYONE in the band was ON! If I were able to jump in a time machine to see a show, outside a few shows with Cliff, this show would be the first stop! 🤘🤘🤘
The guy who recorrded this concert deserves some kind of Heavy Metal Nobel!!!! Imagine a time without smartphones with powerful cameras. Just VHS! Awesome!
Not to mention back then camcorders were seriously as big as milk crates and weighed like 8 pounds. Dudes a trooper lugging that crap around for the entire set and maintaining composure, while filming. Not allowing himself to get in to the music and trying to keep stuff in frame lol😂

It’s insane! Lars Dosent deserve the hate he gets even to this day imo sure he stopped practicing after the black album 2.5 year tour was over but I think that’s because he already proved himself as a great drummer and just relaxed more yet even tho he’s nearly in his 60s he’s killing it again like the 80s and 90s super tight once again!
Yup. I saw them at Day on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum in 85 (when I was 15), then saw this tour with Ozzy in early 86. Also saw them headline with Queensryche (playing Mindcrime in its entirety) in 1989. Fast forward to 1991, I was in college and when the Black Album came out, we all sat in our weed dealer's living room, took bong rips and listened to it front to back. AND WERE ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED. I have never experienced disappointment with a band like I did that day in August 1991. We just looked at each other like "what the FUCK?!?!"

I was lucky enough to see Metallica 3 times in the 80s donnington 85, MOP m/cr apollo 86, donnington 87,this recording reminds me of why I loved them so much we didn't realise we were witnessing metal history.
Kirk Hammett is so underrated as a rhythm guitar player. He matches Jaymz chug for chug. Nowadays, he even carries the rhythm sometimes when Jaymz takes a break here and there or throws in an up stroke or a sustained chord so he doesn't burn himself out. Don't get me wrong, Jaymz is still a rhythm God... but I think people sometimes forget that Kirk is just as good and they really push each other to stay on their game.
They’re on fire here. I remember seeing them at The Spectrum in Philly in April of ‘86 opening for Ozzy and I knew when they finished their set that they were something special.
Yeah, he said during those first few records (And I assume tours also) he was trying to prove himself to everyone so they can see he was a good drummer. And after he proved himself by the time The Black Album came out (I presume) he just began to relax more. And soon enough, he became slower, not really because he sucks, but more-so that he has proved himself already that there wasn't a need to be fast anymore.
According to some quotes in Joel McIver's Metallica book, Lars pretty much totally quit training the drums after the black album, and his musical interests drifted away from classic metal as the 90's went on. That makes sense because we've seen the drumming degrade accordingly.
@@Nissardpertugiuthis was when he started finally hitting puberty by 89 he looks and sounds 35 sadly cliffs death and the grief+anger he felt from it played a part in that

This leaves more harmonic and space. Also he propably changed the support by bringing more bottom in higher notes tp sound fuller. It takes a while to find your style and know yourself too
James is the fucking man literally the best front man to walk earth its crazy how he just kept getting better every year, all the guys were all on different levels during these years but Hetfield literally has out of this world stage presence and such a cool persona, he was easily the best rhythm player and metal singer its literally insane. Man this concert is just perfect, every breakdown where they all head bang together is just awesome. Very few bands can play their entire setlist of songs faster and better then the mix, blows my mind how talented this group is but we will never see another blonde power house kid with an explorer dominating the music scene with shear skill and passion, James has one of if not the best stories in Music. Not to mention the Kirk the Ripper was also the coolest and most humble Metal lead at the time in my opinion. Young Metallica was and is untouchable because they were already so skilled but they then played for their brother Cliff and channeled their anger and sadness of his passing into what he and they loved, Whilst casually out performing every band to exist in their early 20s and going on to dominate Music! Metal was usually either all speed, jibberish nonsense, or just too flat, (Bands like Dio, Priest and Ozzy etc were in their own league aswell but werent nearly as heavy or quick as Metallica). My point from this stoned essay that you weirdly read is Metallica are unbiasly the best band on the planet.
James, Lars and Kirk at the absolute peak of their earth-shaking powers. Changing the face of metal forever before our very eyes. James' voice even sounds good in this show.
At some points you can see Kirk gets really tired and has to alternate pick. James is definitely an alien on that aspect. He could be downpicking non stop for a week straight and not getting fuckin tired.
@@Minty.Fresh.Tunes. not really...James not only plays more downstroking parts for longer, but he also sets the pacing. Kirk really struggles to keep up and either skips notes or alternate picks, not that i can blame him because James is so fucking mental
A young, angry, energetic and hungry Metallica! The giant, amazing stages they have now are cool and all but Man that was an awesome time to see them live!
This wipes the floor with the Seattle concert. The speed and precision of James's playing is the best I've seen from him here. His vocals had way more venom too. But seriously, just listen to his picking in the intro of puppets, especially when Kirk's drops out and it's just James for that brief moment. Fucking TIGHT. The rest of the band is on fire here too. Fucking insane energy.
I went to both Justice shows in Seattle... They were great, but the video is not good at all... I would rather watch this... I wish they would remaster the Audio and re edit those Seattle shows
This is a great show, but I don't think it tops Seattle 89. That show is on another level and is universally accepeted as a top 3. The transition from the bass solo into MoP is probably one of the greatest of all time.
What makes his kit after the Master era not full? Is it just the fact he got rid of the ride cymbal? Cause I’m not sure why people are blaming two toms for the reason his new kits shitty

I'd just like to take a moment here, and thank whoever it was that decided sneak a camcorder into the arena so they could film this concert (and to whoever uploaded this). They were pretty bulky back in 86. It started out rough and I was about to get pissed, but you pulled together and this is METALLICA in their prime. Cliff just die a few month ago and they are all pumped full of adrenaline and clicking like a well oiled METAL machine! This is the best concert I've been to on my laptop, THANK YOU!!!!!.
Metallica actually never had an issue with people recording their live shows. Lars actually said to bootleg the fuck out of them. He just had an issue with people stealing their music online such as the whole Napster debacle. Not that I want to get into that.
@@russkate88 Really? I was under the impression that the first 6 minutes of Cliff 'em All in Detroit was indeed confiscated. I could be wrong though. I read that many years ago.
I've read that after Cliff's death they played faster to get rid of the anger and other negative feelings, so they said in the interviews; that's what brought me here, to listen to Metallica playing 20% faster.
I saw them 5 days earlier in Seattle with Metal Church. Both bands top of their game. EDIT: Single best performance of Battery ever. Wish it was recorded better, but a true gem, thanks.

jason newstead gave so much to metallica, james was a total insane beast in the 80s, kirk fitted jst perfect with his guitar skills and presence, lars was an animal in live concerts in the 80s , now they have to crank the volume all the way up as he barley snare
Lars is playing fantastic. Shame he can't perform as well as he did here, but give the guy a break. In two years this concert will be 40 years old. He just turned 60 in December. Long live Lars🤘🤘
@Northern Realist Lars around 1990-1991 somewhere said "Thrash drums? completed it mate" Then just decided to chill and rock out like an absolute rockstar behind his kit since. Fair play to the lad.
I love what Jason brought to the group but, when I see footage from this period, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sadness. Not only that Cliff was robbed of life BEFORE his prime, but that Jason was put through the wringer by the band. He was no Cliff, but he deserved much more credit than what was given to him, especially to be treated the way he was leading to his quitting the band. Double tragedy!
I know man I mean he wasn't trying to replace cliff but he bought his own energy to the table and james lars and Kirk treated him like trash I get that they were griefing cliff death but I mean don't take it out on Jason who didn't have no responsibility on cliff death I mean I'm sure cliff would be proud of what Jason brought to the stage every night I mean cliff parents did give jason there blessing but what dosen't kill you make you stronger
@@jay-ci3lc Kirk didn’t treat him great at the start but learnt to get along with him after a couple years. James and Lars on the other hand were quite the opposite. The other reason for hazing Jason according to the band was because he acted like he was their biggest fan and it pissed them off.
Woah. Holy rip. This is the goods. Just saw them last week. No comparison. That said, I’m so glad they are still touring and writing. This band had so much impact on so very many peoples lives. Awesome.

Such an dumb ignorant comment, there are plenty of bands who have insane energy and are way more precise than metallica. Maybe take off those grandpa glasses and check out the scene.
Saw them in March of 1986 , just before they went on tour with Ozzy and blew up. Less than 1000 people, Cliff was alive ,and Metallica was playing with Armored Saint with John Bush. Got to meet all of them, got to sing a part of creeping death, and at 16 years old, it was the greatest concert of my life. I'm still playing bass to this day and I got to meet and see one of my heroes months before he would unfortunately lose his life. That is a cherished memory, I only wish I would have been a little more sober! But that's just nitpicking.🤘🤘🤘

One of Metallica's first shows with James performing with the look we've come to know in the ...And Justice for All and Black Album era. All in black, with wristbands and a low pedestal. The most classic posture of the frontman.

Yup.

Kirks the lead guitarist, James the rhythm, this is why kirk does the main solos, except for Nothing Else Matters
You spelt James wrong.
My thoughts exactly
@@afistfulofpimples1745 It's a joke

Incredible performance! I've never seen James in such form. His energy, precision and passion are out of this world here.
They’re on fire here. I remember seeing them at The Spectrum in Philly in April of ‘86 opening for Ozzy and I knew when they finished their set that they were something special.
I can't believe Lars Ulrich was actually playing behind those drums...
Hahahah me neither! What a fucking kick ass metal drummer he was back then!
I think you might have a point there :)
According to some quotes in Joel McIver's Metallica book, Lars pretty much totally quit training the drums after the black album, and his musical interests drifted away from classic metal as the 90's went on. That makes sense because we've seen the drumming degrade accordingly.
Lars was a kick ass drummer until the end of the Black album tour.
