    As a secondary school teacher, I'd like to add that you must be quite strict on the first day. This is one of the only times that is better to be overly strict than to be rather friendly. Then as the classes progresses you start to gradually become more friendly. However I can not emphasize enough that for teens you must exert your leadership from the very first day.

      Great idea!
      You really have to use that first day to lay down the rules and let them understand what you want from them.

      You are 100% correct about the 1st day, he actually said it in a number of other videos. The famous quote is: "Never smile before Christmas!" meaning that teachers must be especially strict over the 1st quarter. Blessings!

    Conditioning the students to wait before asking questions (01:50) is soooo important! The "you can't be shy" rule is a gem for ESL classes!

    My 9th year as a an English teacher and every year I try to start the first class effectively so I do research and watch your first day videos. Thanks for great help and reminders. I have two questions: 1. How many class rules optimal for a class to remember when I ask them? 2: Is placing the rules in class where they can see is a good idea?

    • @etacude
      @etacude  Год назад

      Hi! Great questions.
      I think I remember reading "no more than 5 rules", they cannot remember more than that. You can have a longer list of procedures and rules that you place somewhere they can read it. Preferably where they can always see it.

    At 02:00 you hit the root canal of many classroom problems! Even VETERAN teachers need to refresh on these techniques BEFORE the new academic year starts!

    Hello. Thank you for the advice. I guess some of your tips don't fit with preschoolers!
    Any specific ones for first day for preschoolers?

      Hi! I definitely want to work on some videos specifically for teaching kindergarteners.
      I guess procedures are the most important with them. Create a calm environment, let them know exactly how to do things and be prepared for all of them trying to get your attention. Use songs and chants as much as possible.
      A hello song, goodbye song, clean up song - Whatever systems you can set in place to help them know what to do.

    Hello! If students don't obey the rules, what punishment can be given to them? Could you make a video about the 'consequences'?

    This video is super helpful! As a teacher with 6+ years experience, I’m moving into a public school for the first time in China & I’m nervous about the size of the class being 40-50 students. Classroom management is the main thing I’m nervous about 😅 Do you have any suggestions for this?

    • @etacude
      @etacude  Год назад +1

      I've made a video with some icebreakers. Hopefully one of them is suitable. Otherwise I've got plenty of other no-prep activities I can share too. ^^
