"Orphans going on adventures and finding their place among friends".
Harry and Tom are both orphans, they both go on adventures.
Adventures can be killing giant snakes and stabbing a terrible book, or, travelling to the countryside to find lost family, and killing them all out of disappointment.
Both Harry and Tom found their place among friends. Though in the latter, it was more a power base and followers... who might have thought they were his friends. Still, Tom found his calling and people willing to help in his career ambitions.
It can still apply to the Harry Potter series just as well.
