The Lion the Witch The Wardrobe or any book from the Chronicles of Narnia
ABSOLUTELY YES
I re-read that book just a few days ago, because I was feeling nostalgic 😍 always good to go back to Narnia ❤️
I just got the series for Christmas I’m so excited to read them!
I read one of these I love fantasy overall but just didnt like it
If you like those , Lloyd Alexander’s Book of Three series.
"I feel like I'm entering fall".
Yes it makes sense.
It's one of the best feelings in the world
We desperately need these right now
Big facts!
I completely agree!!!!
Anne of green gables is the ultimate feel good read for me
YES! I can't believe I forgot about that one!
Me too!
I’ve only read Anne of Avonlea and watched Anne with an e. Are the books really good?
@@luuuuux_ I absolutely loved the books, but to be fair I read them a long time ago. I watched the show Anne with an E too, but I wouldn't compare the two. The show changed a lot of things and discussed more modern issues instead of telling the story L. M. Montgomery wrote. The show added plot points and characters (like Cole and Bash) that weren't in the books, and they changed some characters to fit into their shows better (like I don't think Diana could speak French in the books). To me, they are completely different stories with similar characters. I think you should read the first one (Anne of Green Gables) and decide for yourself if it's any good. In my opinion, the books are great :D
@@Gcherry64 ok sure! Thank you for replying :)
YES, I think Agatha Christie writes so warm, despite it being murder mysteries, there's just a cosy feel to her books :")
The Hobbit is my ultimate feel good book. Anything with a good old fashioned adventure, the child-like innocence, the grumpy characters, and anything to do with the Shire just make me want to curl up under a blanket with a nice cup of tea.
Good to know I'm getting the entire series for my bday
@@windsorholman when is it? happy birthday!
@@Awesome1094 its a few months from now but im starting my list now and if i shorten it enough im guarranted to get it
I’ve seen this book at least once in the comments already, but Howl’s Moving Castle is a cozy fantasy story and one of my favorites.
Also, check out Dogsbody by the same author (Diana Wynne Jones). It's one of my favorites!
I agree! I reread it as my last book of 2020 and I love the sassiness of the characters, especially howl ☺️
Howl's Moving Castle is my favourite book of all time! I just feel so good reading it... The movie is also amazing!
Merphy knows how to lift a spirit. I need these recommendations today.
For the cozy beach town book: "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". Such a good book, very character driven.
Good omens! I've been waiting for that. The tv adaptation is also very good with Aziraphale and Crowley being fantastic in every scene.
These are some of my favourite feel good books
• The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
• Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
• The Outsiders by S. E Hinton
• The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang
• The Tea Dragon Society by Katie O'Neill
•The Moomin series by Tove Jansson
•One Piece by Eiichiro Oda
ari, one of my fav fictional people. i love that kid
I love Ari and Dante(I like to call the book that). It just makes me feel warm and happy inside.
The Tea Dragon Society is such a wonderful step away from worries, I love it
Wait, "And Then There Were None" is COZY?! I was more terrified by that book than any horror film I've ever watched...but then again, Merphy reads dark books, so maybe for her it is fine.
For me, though, the murders were brutal and the fact that they were based on a nursery rhyme creeped me out so much!
The only cozy murder mystery I can think of is "Hercule Poirot's Christmas"...mostly because of the setting and time.
My immediate first reaction. 🤣Never thought I'd hear "feel good" applied to And Then There Were None.
Yesss give me all the cozy books that’ll make us feel. I desperately need some warm feels right now 🥰
I wanna feel warm and cozy with a good book 📚 too
My list of feel good books:
Princess Academy by Shannon Hale. This one is a childhood favorite, but still holds up today. The writing is so beautiful, simple but with such a nice melodic rhythm to it. And I will forever love the setting of Mount Eskell. It's one of the books where reading it feels like coming home.
Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George. This is another childhood favorite about a girl who ends up with a pair of slippers made of dragon hide that have strange abilities. It's just so much fun to read and the character dynamics never fail to make me smile.
All Creature Great and Small by James Herriot. I don't think any book can cheer me up as well as this one. It's a semi autobiographical story about a vet in Yorkshire in the 1940's. Herriot captures the eccentricities of human nature so well and I have never laughed out loud so much from a book as I have with this one.
Last but not least is Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (or Emma. I can't choose) I adore all of Austen's novels but this one holds a special place in my heart. The humor is amazing and the interactions between Catherine and Mr. Tilney always have me grinning like an idiot.
I read a book of a thousand days by Shannon hale and really loved it. hope to read more from Shannon
@@joysmwangi8606 Book of a Thousand Days is the best!!
My favorite feel good books are the Anne Shirley collection. They're sweet, incredibly funny, and full of chaotic energy. Top tier, 10/10 books, definitely recommend.
Love Anne of Green Gables!
Same author as Starless Sea: I loved The Night Circus. V cozy and atmospheric read, especially in autumn. Agree about Jane Austen books too, I got into them during the first lockdown and they helped me cope x)
My favorite feel good book is The Ten Thousand Doors of January. It is a beautifully written light fantasy focused on a girl who is separated from her family and doesn't fit in where she is, and goes forward into discovery, adventure, and just really focuses on the relationships/family theme. I love this book so much. Good thing I sent it to you!😄💛
Ooooh, thank you for reminding me about this book! I officially put it on my to-read list now and am even more excited to read it based on your description. I had wanted to read it already after seeing it in the library, but hadn't gotten around to it and had forgotten about it.
The coziest book of all time for me is little house in the big woods. Just soooooooooo cozy and warm. Also nostalgic to the max.
I loved those books as a child!
Any Discworld novel! And The Wind In The Willows and some Roald Dahl stuff. Will be cool to see your recommendations Merph, Been watching for over 3 years and never disappoints.
Yes Roald Dahl definitely!
I'm reading "Mort" (Thanks Jay from captured in words) at the moment and it's a lot of fun and it's cracking me up !
Roald Dahl books are the absolute best
Would you recommend the audiobooks for discworld? I’m interested in starting and it’d be great if I could listen to it.
The Wind in the Willows is such a comfort read!
I’d say that some of my feel good books are:
Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan. No matter how many times I read it, I feel like I’m going home and am hit by nostalgia and it feels amazing.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. This book is amazing. Can’t stress it enough.
Circe by Madeline Miller. This book just gives me all the feels. It feels calm and yet also feels sad and happy and just a bunch of emotions(for me).
Anything by Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl. They’re just amazing.
The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho. This book is absolutely amazing and I would recommend it to everyone.
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This book is so sad yet it warms my heart because it’s absolutely amazing.
Also, everyone remember to take care of yourself by drinking enough water, eating at least once a day and by taking time for yourself. Remember, you are loved and valid. I love you. Have a great day and stay safe ❤️
I was literally looking up feel good books yesterday, it's like you read my mind. Thank you so much!
After all that happened yesterday and today, I needed this!! Any Merphy video will make my day a bit better, but one about feel good books on day where I'm in desperate need of an escape from reality? That is another level of wonderful!
Thanks for the recs!!! We definitely needed the positivity!
Oh, Winnie the Pooh! It's so underrated. I've grown up listening to the audio books and now when I'm listening to it again I notice so many new things... It's such a great story, I love it!!
Thank you, they are needed right now
Yes! I'm so glad you started reading Good Omens.
I'm looking forward to you talking about it :)
I really needed this video!! Thanks so much
Love you!!
The timing on this could not be better ❤️
Your videos have been on point recently. I have found myself on here more than Daniel Greene or Elliot Brooks good book tubers but you hit the right spot with the type of videos you do
I feel like anything by Terry Pratchett is feel good, if not absolutely hilarious
I love your category titles almost as much as I love some of these books :D
I loved "on the fence"! Thanks for the recommendation!!
I definitely feel that "nostalgia" for The House in the Cerulean Sea.
It just reads like one of those books you went through as a kid. I loved it.
When the first one (childhood feel good books) came up, I thought of just Ella because I began rereading it just yesterday!! And you mentioned it ahhhh. Idk why I'm so excited by this but I am. Now I'll definitely finish reading it! (and will add to my tbr all others you mention ♥️)
This was genuinely great timing! Like idk if you planned this or responded to chaos of the world... But Thank you for these!
Thank you Merphy for these recommendations! We needed it in these times:) I also recommend On Luna Time for a cosy beachtown! One of my favorite books of all time
I love this video idea ... It shows a lot of great sounding books, that don't get talked about that much :)
The little women thing is SO TRUE. Like I feel like I’m curling up on a comfy chair in fall with a blanket and a fireplace next to me. Don’t even ask me why but every time I read it I feel that way
For humorous books I recommend the Jeeves series by P. G.Wodehouse.
P.G. Wodehouse in general, and the Jeeves & Wooster stories in particular, are prime "feel good" reading (and work well as audiobooks).
@@Steve_Stowers I love the audiobooks narrated by Jonathan Cecil.
I love that you also recommend books that were not for you! I‘m also a big supporter of the thought that even though I did not love certain books, that does not mean they can‘t very well work for others ☺️
I’ve literally spend 2 hours on Wednesday searching for warm/feel good without much success and now I see this video. Thanks Murphy, it’s like this video was done especially for me !
Yay! I'm glad you're enjoying Good Omens. It's one of my favorites.
Thanks so much for these, Merphy❤ Much love to you😍
Such great recommendations. I never thought that murder mysteries could be cozy, but after the titles you picked, I get it.
Fun list! In mine I also have some old favs like Watership Down, Dragon Lance series, and Forgotten Realms series. All quick reads and good any time you want something enjoyable and not super dense.
At this point in time, Game of Thrones even feels like a "feel good" book.
😂😂
Go Louisa May Alcott! Here's a list of some of her lesser known books that are still wonderful, cozy, and endearing.
-Eight Cousins
-An Old Fashioned Girl
-Jack and Jill
Thanks merph❤️ Needed this 🦋
Thanks for this list! Always looking for feel-good books! I read Austen if I don’t feel well because her books are so comfortable and good.
Also, Agatha Christie is awesome!
I’m sure someone has mentioned it but Neil Gaiman’s middle grades are very cozy to me!
Yeah it is and he is the best audiobook narrator out there
Its amazing you posted this today. I'm going to take my dog that I've had for most of my life to be put down tomorrow. I really appreciate this recommendation video. Thank you
I have never cried reading a book, I'm just not a crier... The house in the Cerulean Sea made me cry in so many parts. So heart-warming! 5 star book!
The Mysterious Benedict Society! that series is so good, loved it as a child and i love it still. also the Anne of Green Gables books!
I’m so excited that your are reading Good Omens! When you are done you HAVE to watch the show. Michael Sheen and David Tennant are SOOOO perfect!
On the Fence and the Murderbot Diaries are on my TBR, but I spotted some other good recs from your video, Thank you Merph!
I really need this, i was reading "Animal Farm" and tbh i don't feel great, it's rough, so thank you for making this.
Damn being russian and reading this book just hits different you know
I cried so hard :( Nothing has changed
Love the recommendations here and definitely a few I have to try out, especially after the year everyone's had. Can't recommend Harry Potter, Good Omens and Discworld enough!
Fully agree on the Jane Austen novels. Also, The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss and The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.
A very much needed recommendation
Chronicles of Prydain! I'm about to re-read the series, very excited.
Everything by Jenny Colgan is very feel good, and she has a few cozy beach town books!
Anne of Green Gables is my ultimate feel-good book. It just makes life seem more beautiful and wonderous.
Anne was my role model when my mom read it to me when I was little. It's so good!
The Anne of the Green Gables series is one of the coziest things ever, it's like a warm hug
Pretty much anything by Agatha Christie is cozy, but maybe the coziest are the Miss Marple books
And if you want more cozy murder mysteries, there's a middle grade series called Murder Most Unladylike by Robin Stevens, it's about two girls detecting in the 1930s and it's so delightful
I'm also reading I Capture the Castle right now, I haven't finished it but it seems cozy so far, and I saw most people say it is
And Matilda by Roald Dahl is one of my all time favourites ever since I was little
Great video! I started a Harry Potter read through! The good feeling comes from nostalgia haha
For a feel-good Harry Potter fanfiction I recommend Harry Potter and the Natural 20, (especially the part covering the first book), it makes me laugh so much. Do you read any HP fanfiction?
Oh, thank you! Thank you, thank you. I need a mind/heart vacation.
My feel good books: any Redwall book, Three Men in a Boat, Jeeves collection, Mitford series.
I've only read the first Mitford so far but it doesn't get any more "feel good" than that. I was wondering if anyone would mention them.
The Monster at the End of This Book: Starring Lovable, Furry Old Grover
I LOVE that book. I read it to my son all the time
@@merphynapier42 it was my absolute favorite as a child, and still gives me warm feelings just thinking about it. I'm glad it still works for kids today!
Yes!!! Omg, I loved that book when I was a kid, and still kinda love it now. Talk about nostalgia . . . :)
Omg I forgot about this book! I loved it as a kid!!!🥺
@@notld77 It's an awesome book even though they changed the ending
I love a good YA book for a bit of the feel-goods. Sanderson definitely spoils us with some good YA characters and friendships, the Skyward and Reckoners books often swept me away in giddy excitement! It probably also helped that I first read those series’ after each of my kids was born - it’s hard to beat cuddling a sleepy newborn and reading some lighthearted Sanderson!
Right now, I get a strange level of enjoyment out of some of the bedtime stories I read with my 3 year old. It amazes me the depth you can find in very simple books. She has this little book that says something along the lines of “Magic is not unknown to us, you just have to know where to find it...” and it goes on to talk about the magic in everyday life. It charms my socks of every time we read it ☺️
Some of my childhood faves give me a cozy nostalgia buzz, as I read them to my grandchildren books like Winnie the Pooh and the Dr Seuss books with their zany rhymes...
Yes, some of my comfort reading is to revisit childhood favorites, like the Oz books of Frank Baum, or the Freddy the Pig books of Walter Brooks.
I have been wanting to read Wayward Children! And I think I want to pick up Just Ella for my daughter
I love the wayward children series (have only read the first two so far) but I would not say the violence is subdued... Or at least the aftermath of violence is quite graphically described, especially in the first book, I thought.
I recently read Beach Read (for your cozy beach town recs!).. I don't read a lot of romance but I quite enjoyed this one. Def good beach town vibes :)
Thank you so much for this! I’ve really been struggling with depression lately and don’t want to read dark/depressing books like I normally do.
And I love that outro song more and more!
This literally came out at the best possible time
The House in the Cerulean Sea was my fave book of 2020, and got me super into TJ Klune as an author (I’ve since read 2 other series by him). He’s written everything from adult romantic LGBTQ+ fantasy to middle grade superhero novels and has got a wonderful way of writing characters and bringing them to life in a way thats simultaneously so deeply touching and humorous
My childhood favorites, read and reread multiple times: The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas and Seacrow Island by Astrid Lindgren.
Oh, yes for Discworld any book, but the most feel good probably is The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett
Second Hand Curses by Drew Hayes - funny twist on fairy tales.
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache Series by Louise Penny falls in that Warm and Cozy Environmental Books category
Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden - it could be worse category, and every time they get lucky at the end.
And my personal latest comfort read is Dr. Siri Paiboun Series by Colin Cotterill
When you're done with reading Good Omens, you gotta watch the Amazon show! I love it so so much, and David Tennant and Michael Sheen are definitely part of the reason for that 😂❤️
Loved the recommendations. thnx Merphy
Please make a video of your home library tour , love your videos 💜
Here are some of my "feel good" recommendations. I used to read a LOT of middle grade, so I'm not putting this as a separate category: I'll just mark those as "MG" so you know which ones are kids' books. I will also add a few films and TV series.
Wholesome/hopeful about real world stuff, with kind solutions to real problems:
- Liar & Spy (MG)
- Wonder (MG)
- Rampenkamp (MG, unfortunately exists only in Dutch)
- Little Miss Sunshine (film)
Environmental reads to escape the real world:
- The Night Circus
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (MG)
Funny:
- The Wayside School series (MG)
- The BFG (MG)
Sweet, funny and fantasy at the same time:
- Good Omens (only saw the TV series and it is amazing)
Cozy mysteries (all Agatha Christie):
- Five Little Pigs
- Sleeping Murder
- The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side
Other:
- The Mysterious Benedict Society (MG)
I just started Good Omens, too :D I already watched the series and loved it, so I was pretty sure I would like the book, too. I didn't expect that there were so many quotesfrom the book in the series, I love it!
Feel Good books for me are some childhood favorites and/or more lighthearted fantasy. ...like Harry Potter, Dragon Rider from Cornelia Funke and some books from the Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus Series, especially the first one, because I just love the humour and the writing style :D
OMG! I love good omens so much! Personally I do think the ending in the tv show is slightly better / more satisfying but they are both great I don't see enough hype for it lol :)
Summer of Salt. One of my favorite contemporaries ever and takes place on a small island in the Atlantic and deals with magic. It is definitely atmospheric. Not sure if cozy is the right word but still recommend
"Cozy murder mystery" sounds like such an oxymoron
Honestly, that's the best description for a book by Agatha Christie
Lol. That's what I thought XD
Agatha Christie's humor shines in her Hercule Poirot books, her writing style is very cozy to me, it never gets too gritty or graphic (I've read 7 books by her up until now :) ).
@@onfaerystories that's good to know! I want to read her stuff even more now!
"Cozy mystery" is an actual, recognized subgenre (it has its own Wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cozy_mystery), though "And Then There Were None" may not be the best example.
Ooo yes, love wicked deep!
We're reading The House in the Cerulean Sea together! It is so great; very different from what I expected, but lovely nonetheless.
Sounds kind of counterproductive but I loved reading a Series of Unfortunate Events when I was younger.
I completely forgot about these books until this video reminded me. Time to re-read them!
"The Wicked Deep" sounds so cozy! Lol
One of my favorite coastal town/cozy mystery is The Library Lovers Mysteries by Jenn McKinley. The first one is Books Can be Deceiving.
- Surviving the Applewhites by Stephanie S. Tolan is my favorite feel-good middle grade book. Could read that one over and over.
- A favorite from my childhood would be the Poppleton series by Cynthia Rylant. The messages are simple but heartwarming and the illustrations are lovely and quaint.
- For the beach town theme, I've been enjoying the Pelican Cove cozy mystery series by Leena Clover.
- The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud deals with grief but I really felt comforted by it, and it also takes place in a seaside town.
- Definitely agree with the Harry Potter series and Jane Austen novels. I also love the Hobbit because it's adventurous but still very charming.
- Currently, I'm half way through Starting Over at Acorn Cottage by Kate Forster which is technically a romance I think. Not sure how it ends but so far it's been a very cozy and comforting story.
Seems like most of my picks deal with starting over fresh in one way or another, I guess we all need a fresh start in 2021.
This is difficult because all my *favorite* books either a) make me cry b) make me stare off into space too long or c) both, lol. I would say Sir Terry Pratchett's books, except "Nation" is my favorite (see point C above), and even my other top favs of his (Thief of Time, Night Watch, Small Gods) are nooooot his lightest fare.
But I will say that most definitely "The Hobbit"; I just adore how the narrative style sounds exactly like Grandpa Tolkien himself is sitting in an overstuffed armchair with a pipe and smoking jacket and roaring fire nearby and personally *telling* you the story. It's just so delightful, really.
My ultimate feel-good book rec, though, would have to be Calvin & Hobbes! That popped into my head and won't get out of the way. You've recommended it before, and I don't think anyone could ever recommend it enough. Bill Watterson is a freakin' genius.
Merphy I think you would love Endless Night for your next Christie! I think it's great and it is one of those books that doesn't go the way you think it's going to go!
Murderbot is so good! I just read all of it and I'm left craving more.
Thank you, Merph
To those of you looking for a good cozy mystery: the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny (starting with Still Life) is truly astounding. Set in a Québec village that rivals Hogwarts as the most inviting fictional setting, this series follows a brilliant and tender-hearted detective as he investigates murders, gets to know the locals, and eats wonderful food. The prose is lovely but concise, and the characters are warm and kind (mostly). It is a cozy mystery series written with the grace and sophistication of literary fiction.
There are 16 books out so far, and she publishes a new one every autumn.
I loved Still Life! Unlike most mysteries it really focused on the life of the victim, what an interesting person she was and how much she affected everyone else in the town. You really feel how much people loved her and what a profound loss it was when she died. I haven’t read the other books in the series but I plan to read more at some point.
@@prenticeclark1454 Glad to know I'm not alone. Louise Penny doesn't get much love on BookTube, but I think her work is superb. Hope you enjoy Fatal Grace and others when you get around to them!
Cozy beach town and relationships: Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen. I really enjoyed that book.
I was thinking of that book too when she mentioned cozy beach town!
Some other cozy mysteries are the Miss Marple series, also by Agatha Christie
The Hobbit, The Neverending Story, Anne of Green Gables, Narnia and Little Women are my picks 😊 I really have to read The House in the Cerulean Sea!
The Spiderwick Chronicles, most middle grade by Nancy Farmer(not house of the scorpion), and Fablehaven all gave me great 'otherworldly adventure' vibes, which for me are quite comforting.
