@Michael Burke she explicitly said she just didn't like it. Not that it made it hard. Did you watch the video? He even comments on how its weird that she hates the prose in books she loves.

I think she still deserves both points, she clocked it before he rolled into the next sentence.
The reason that sentence in _Lord of the Flies_ is indecipherable is because it's a "garden path sentence", meaning it tricks your brain into misinterpreting a phrase at the beginning, causing the ending to make no sense. The issue is that "smashed into the jungle" sounds like a verb, but it's actually just a description. The sentence is a lot less ambiguous if you add two words (and a comma): "All round him, the long scar *that was* smashed into the jungle was a bath of heat."

@@sophiagough-solar3969 I finished the final empire yesterday and it’s now one of my favorite books. The last third kind of left me out of breath. I immediately picked up well of ascension. The beginning didn’t really hook me, but I’m pretty sure I’ll become invested soon. But yeah, I’m definitely enjoying it

Oh man, the opening to The Outsiders is a classic and iconic to me. It's one of few that I can quote verbatim.
It's also easy for me to remember because the opening line is also the closing line, since the book ends with Ponyboy writing the book itself

Ok, I just instantly recognized the first sentence of The Giver, although I only read that book once in high school more than 10 years ago. I don't know how I did that, but I'm kinda proud right now, lol.
For me, it was the association with 'December'. I don't remember much of the book, I don't think I even got 2/3 through it, but it was recognizable enough for me I guess

I surprised myself in correctly guessing Lord of the Flies, I book I've not read since my very early twenties, fifty years ago! I really ought to give it another read. I was, alas, clueless on the rest, only a few of which I've read.

This was so funny to watch. And I got so happy when I saw a book I personally love which is This is How you Lose the Time War. I also recognised it instantly mainly because the name being Red is like present in one other book I know which is a Little Red Riding Hood retelling but that one starts completely different.
