This, believe it or not, is their "warm-up" song, which makes sense because every guy in the band is is loosening up and playing at top form. They were invited to perform on the TV show The Midnight Special, asked to do this song but were only given half the time to perform it in. So, instead of cutting it in half, they played it double time. It was the only standing ovation ever on the show, I believe. BTW, they are a Dutch band, still performing.

Saw Focus live in Bournemouth in 1972. Excellent band. I saw Akkerman as a solo artist many years later and managed to have a chat with him. One of my favourite guitarists.

Thijs van Leer, on keyboards/flute/vocals held a strong view that the voice was 'just another instrument' so used it in many tracks, usually with no actual words. Yodeling originated in the Central Alps as a way for herders to communicate with their flocks and between villages. The earliest record of yodeling is from 1545 and describes it as "the call of a cowherd from Appenzell". Yodeling is a type of singing that alternates between high falsetto and low chest notes. It's characterized by the rapid enunciation of open and closed vowels on wide intervals. Here are some other facts about yodeling: Communication: Yodeling was a vital way for communities separated by valleys and rugged terrain to communicate. Entertainment: Yodeling was also a form of entertainment in Alpine Europe. Other regions: Yodeling is also found in other mountain regions, such as China and the Americas, and among the Pygmies of Africa and the Aboriginal peoples of Australia. Country music: Some of country music's greatest stars, including Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Gene Autry, and Slim Whitman, were yodelers. Bollywood: There's a tradition of yodeling in Bollywood. Other genres: A new generation of yodelers is incorporating yodeling into genres such as jazz, electronica, and pop. Tarzan: Johnny Weissmuller, the actor who played Tarzan, learned yodeling in Pennsylvania at family gatherings of Austrian immigrants.
That bass player was on fire! He’s the only one you didn’t, lol, Focus on. Bass guitar is extremely influential, but so few notice it. BG players work with the drums and can be so subtle people don’t notice them. I call bass guitar the stealth instrument 😂 That’s why I love it sh
That show "The Midnight Special", ran for years, and that was the one and only time there was a standing ovation for any artist/artists 🤯 Also, that piece of music was much slower & lasted over 3 minutes, but whoever was on the show only had 2+ minutes to play their song. So the powers that be asked the group to only play half of it. But they didnt want to do that, they thought that the whole song needed to be heard, so they played it double speed. And that was the result. Loved your reaction. It was one of your best. 👌🔥🎼
This song is normally three times slower on the studio version. they only had a certain amount of time to play the whole song so they speed up the tempo x3 on this show i think it's better this way
There were no time constraints, that's a myth created by the shorter, edited, 4 minute version of this song. This full live version is only a few seconds shorter than the studio version, so it could never have been played 3x faster.

70s craziness at its best! But with boundless talent. Whoever heard a guitarist sweep picking and shredding in 1973. So glad you didn't have to obscure this video, it's a sheer joy to watch and listen.
I knew that you'd love this if you watched it. From what i remember, the original version is slower and longer, but they were told that they could only play a song that was under 3 minutes, so they sped up the song to fit within that time. It's amazing.
I know alot of old skool music but there’s still alot I’ve never heard and one thing I love about you’re channel is that I get to experience songs I even never heard for the first time right along with you and that’s truly an experience with substance
This performance was done on the TV music show Midnight Special. The band was asked to shorten the song to meet the time constraints of the show. Instead, they performed it faster like almost double-time. The audio version is much better IMHO. Focus is a Dutch progressive rock band formed in Amsterdam in 1969 by keyboardist, vocalist, and flautist Thijs van Leer, drummer Hans Cleuver, bassist Martijn Dresden, and guitarist Jan Akkerman. "Hocus Pocus" was released in 1970 and was so unique and different, it became a huge hit when it came out! Thanks for another great reaction, MB! ✌💙✌
I was one of the people who asked for this. I was shure you will appreciate it, because it's brilliant and unique. You should also listen to 'Arthur Brown - Fire'. In the 70' i was so in Psychedelic Rock and the German Synthbands like Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Kraftwerk, Klaus Schulze.....and finally 'Iron Butterfly-In A Gadda Da Vida'. We where real 'Doobie Brothers' back then. Still rocking with '65.
I was so lucky to see Focus in London last month (Nov 2024). Thijs van Leer is yodelling again after years of leaving it to someone else in the band. Pierre van der Linden is still drumming like that at the age of 79. They'll be back in London next November. The guitarist Jan Akkerman is no longer part of the band but I'm going to see him at the Bush Hall in London in Feb 2025. Unfortunately the bass player here Bert Ruiter died of cancer a couple of years ago. If you get a chance to see any of these musicians don't miss it.

Guitarists name is Jan Akkermann. One of the very best guitarists ever, but also a world renowned Lute player. Seriously underrated. This performance was 1973 and he was sweep picking and shredding as can plainly be seen. Clapton, Beck, Mayall etc hadn't even gone there before Akkerman. A true innovator and genius who mastered so many styles of guitar playing.
Your looks at the camera are beyond priceless, that is why I enjoy among other reasons, watching your reactions. You, my young friend, are FIRE!!!!!!!!

Here are some other facts about yodeling:
Communication: Yodeling was a vital way for communities separated by valleys and rugged terrain to communicate.
Good point!
@module79l28 meh, it was a Live TV show. And the tempo was definitely higher i've been listening to the song since the 70s.Tell me the tempo was not higher. This was live. They added more components and stanzas to the song. Go back and listen to the original and then go back home , son , know your place
@@terryconnelly484 - It's higher but not 3x faster. You clearly know nothing about tempos or bpms.
I probably listened to the studio version more times than you, son, I don't need to listen to it one more time.
@terryconnelly484 They always played it faster live - check out the Whistle test version and there's another in a film studio.
@module79l28 I'm 56 I don't care what age you are and I don't care how many times you've listened to it yes it is faster whatever you want to call it Tempo or BPM
Thank you for doing the long version!!! Drives me crazy watching the short version
The only standing ovation ever on the Midnight Special.
NOW you can say you've lived. And by the way that sideways glance, you give the camera when you experience something remarkable is so endearing!! I love your reactions!❤
That was priceless. I was one of those who recommended this song. You are so much fun to watch react to the crazy stuff we old farts just took for granted when we were your age 😂🤣😁so hilarious, I love it
no autotune or pitch correction , just real music being made right in front of you. What a time to be alive it was. Now everything is made to sound the same. This song is so stand out fantastic !
This always starts with confusion...and ends with absolute appreciation for what you just experienced... lol Awesome as always!
70s craziness at its best! But with boundless talent. Whoever heard a guitarist sweep picking and shredding in 1973. So glad you didn't have to obscure this video, it's a sheer joy to watch and listen.
Pure, raw, mad energy!
Congrats with your 100k. You earned every single one of them!
I knew that you'd love this if you watched it. From what i remember, the original version is slower and longer, but they were told that they could only play a song that was under 3 minutes, so they sped up the song to fit within that time. It's amazing.
LMFAO! The look on your face is priceless!
Love the 70's! My era! Talent abounded!. We got to hear the best!
I shot a live video of this band when they played at a local festival a couple of years ago, they’re lovely guys and still rock out aged over 70 years
I know alot of old skool music but there’s still alot I’ve never heard and one thing I love about you’re channel is that I get to experience songs I even never heard for the first time right along with you and that’s truly an experience with substance
He definitely wasn't expecting the flute! 😂
Or the whistling....
Or the yodeling either I think. Lol 😅
Yeah the flute 🤣🤣🤣
Loved your reaction. Glad you’re discovering “our” music and the pleasure it brings. Peace
You hit a real gem here Molly, when this came out on the radio we just all fell over.............
True. Talent doesn’t mean much anymore, well, at least for “popular” music. These guys had it for sure.
Just in middle of watching this..your reaction to hearing him start singing was priceless. Live rock as it should be.😎
I’ve heard it so much that I forgot how surprised I was the first time. Thanks for reminding me. 🤗
They are still playing, I saw them about 6 months ago, at age 85 I think he is still performing this!
I have watched this dozens of time and it is still joyous
One of my all-time favorite things about music is watching people's first reactions to the GREAT song. It almost always brings JOY to whoever's hearing it - a smile, outright laughter, but always a pure reaction. The band is one of my faves, superb musicians. Thanks for this!
DAMN !!! I missed this live. I have been waiting for this reaction for AGES. Funny stuff...
Long live the Flute. (You still need to check out Thick as a Brick.)
ok, Mollz...thanks for that one...outstanding...I've never seen this one live, never knew their name or the name of this song!!! Still learning I guess...they are beyond belief virtuosos live...I'm dumbfounded!!!!!
At last! I waited forever for you to react to this
Excellent reaction! I heard this song as a small child in the 70's, and from that moment I was a rock fan!
Yes the best version and the one i suggested, thanks for choosing the best one. Was waiting to see your face at the yodelling part, haha, you didn't disappoint 😅 correction not the one is suggested, theres an extra segment not on version i know of this same live. Still good though
At 56, I feel like I have heard the yodeling before…but none of the other parts…it’s awesome. I’m so glad I got to hear it with you MB.
Your best reaction ever.....the look of awe on your face was priceless!!!
Agreed!!☢
I love watching first reactions to this tune.
Thanks!
When I was newly wed I told my husband this is what PMS is like in your head… fear me😂😂😂 The look on his face was just like yours! He survived🙃
Your looks at the camera are beyond priceless, that is why I enjoy among other reasons, watching your reactions. You, my young friend, are FIRE!!!!!!!!
I haven't heard this for YEARS! I'm gonna have to watch this video so many times, because I want to watch the actual video as well as MB's reactions to it. Hilarious!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍👍
Love this song and this particular performance is the most amazing ever
The look on your face when Thijs van Leer started yodelling was priceless!
Now that's musicianship at it best 👌
I've been waiting for this one, love watching when people discover this group, they are so talented.
70's music such experimental and variety in music, the midnight special show, gave the artists the stage,do what you want, it was fantastic
Your journey has become more of a wild ride, MB, and I'm glad you seem to be enjoying it even more. Focus formed in 1969 and are still making music today. They've also sold more than a million albums in the USA.
