Once you start doing a variety of 70s music, you'll absolutely love it. I grew up in the 70s/80s and we had the best music & we also grew up listening to the great 60s music. Glad you're not limiting yourself to only heavy metal.
When your eyes lit up when he said Birmingham 😂😂 The story goes that they told the record label they needed $500 for the video. They used the $500 on weed and beer and shot the vid in the drummer’s backyard.
Black Betty is actually a really old song ... the oldest recordings of this song go back to the 1930’s ... the song itself likely goes back into the 1800’s. There are a few versions of what “Black Betty” actually means ... it is a reference to a civil war era gun -- a “musket” called a Black Betty ... it is said the "bam a lam" is a reference to how the musket sounds when fired. “Black betty” is also a very very old reference to a bottle of whisky from the l820's (this came to this country from England possibly as far back as the 1700’s. In fact, an old term for being drunk is to have been "Kissing Black Betty" (kissing a bottle of liquor). Other references lost to the annals of time have been attributed to this song as well ... there is quite a bit in wikipedia on the song. The cadence and melody of the song may have started out in an English military march, pre-1900 ......... and of course, as you can hear in the song Black Betty is also a reference to a woman. The history of RamJam is a complicated one and the fact that they have only one big hit would seem to be because of the instability of the band, not a lack of talent. And not to muddy the water too much more, that video was of the group of guys that _became_ RamJam ... like I say; off in the weeds already. The earliest _recorded_ versions of the song appear to be from the 1920’s-1930’s. Like many roots music songs, Black Betty was also sung as an old african-american work song ... sang when working in the fields ... or when "dancing on the rails" as a "Gandy" (work straightening railroad tracks by hand). As far as those old, old versions of the song, you can still listen to some of these, and you can hear some of the lyrics from the Ram Jam version actually *in* those very old songs ... If you’d like to check them out .. Here are two recordings of the song from the 1930's, first is sung by Mose 'Clear Rock' Platt ... ruclips.net/video/BgvdA1MGCYo/видео.html .... and the second version from 1933 is sung by James Iron Head Baker ... ruclips.net/video/c4XFXJSQQOI/видео.html.
Thats how we rolled in the 70s, back yard BBQ Jam. Black betty is a few things here; It was an African-American RR labor chant to added rhythm to the work, as old as the 1800's... it is a reference to a civil war era gun -- a “musket” called a Black Betty ... it is said the "bam a lam" is a reference to how the musket sounds when fired. Its also a very very old reference to a bottle of whisky from the l820's (this came to this country from England possibly as far back as the 1700’s. In fact, an old term for being drunk is to have been "Kissing Black Betty" (kissing a bottle of liquor)... and of course, as you can hear in the song a beautiful black woman, the singer is smitten by her to the point where he can’t hold it in. Thanx much, Peace
Geez finally somebody that knows something. Black Betty didn’t shoot straight but they sure appreciated having the weapon. Song has interesting history. Banned from playing on the radio because it was racist according to NAACP.
Black Betty was also a term for alcohol, and for prostitutes, all at different points throughout history. TMK each verse of the song is about a different 'Black Betty' that I believe got added over time, since this actually started as an old worker's song I think as far back as like the 1920s, but I'm not 100% sure about that.
Ram Jam is a one hit wonder. The lead singer was the lead guitarist in a band in the 1960s called -the Lemon Pipers-which was another one hit wonder-their hit Green Tambourine was a #1 song in the US in 1968.
It was a cover, too. I don't think anyone knows who first wrote this since it's a Civil War song about the cannon fire, but there are recordings from the 1930s.

The first verse (written about 200 years ago!) is about a musket, which at that time had serious defects: sometimes it did not ignite, the aiming was very inaccurate and the shooter was sometimes blinded by a lot of smoke. We need more time to enjoy the song... so lets play it again May I recommend " Peter Frampton Do You Feel Like We Do Midnight Special 1975 FULL" Hope I can get some support on this one!!! Hell no one has seen or heard of them since this song. They rocked it big time. I heard in a interview that their manager gave them 500 dollars to go make a video. They went and bought 450 dollars in alcohol and the other 50 dollars produced this in their wonderful back yard. It literally is one of the band members back yard !! 💯🔊🤘🏼💀🤘🏼🔊💯 That’s pretty awesome to me. The song blew up, it was a major hit.🤘🏼
This is an awesome song and I actually have a playlist with all the reaction videos therein, but I have been waiting for yours! And here it is. Btw please don't cut yourself off from '70s music. '60s '70s and '80s the best decades and if you cut yourself off you're going to be missing a lot of fantastic music and a lot of really great music came out of the '70s and '80s particular but also the '60s don't want to leave them out. Loved your reaction! ❤️
It's always been a gem of a tune... And the video always reminds me of just hanging with friends, grilling burgers and drinking beer and having a fun Saturday! Good times... Rock on brother.. 🤟
Hey kid, here's a little background on the song. The original, started as a work song, sung by Black men in the early last century. The song, has ties to the great blues performer/songwriter, Lead Belly. Some claim that “Black Betty” was written by Lead Belly, though others claim that he adapted it from even earlier versions. Some say “Black Betty” refers to a woman, others claim it’s a nickname for any number of objects, including a bottle of whiskey, a whip, or even a prison transfer wagon. I used to listen to it when I was a "one-percenter" (outlaw biker) back in the 70s & early 80s.
Black Betty has been rerecorded by a few different bands but Ram Jam gave it life. If you like this type of music might I suggest Boston (More than a feeling), Styx (Blue collar man), Queen (1985 Live Aid performance) & Led Zeppelin (Kashmir). I was very lucky to catch Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Cocker together. Joe Cocker is another one that gets overlooked in reviews and should get more love. Joe Cocker (With a little help from my friends).
Woo-Hoo! Now that's Rock 'N' Roll, awesome musicians, what we used to call 'TIGHT' back in the olden days 😁. This song is number one on my "Feel-Good Playlist." I can never hear it without smiling...
This is currently a popular song with reactors right now...and for good reason! Amazing song, great reaction brotha! Keep up the great work! I love the diversity on your channel. Looking forward to your Billy Idol reactions once you get them up.
It's so awesome to see the young generation transform into an old soul. You are absolutely 💯 correct, music today is not the done like this. If you want to hear a new sound: Jethro Tull- Locomotive Breath LIVE (1982, Rockpop Concert)
I have heard this song one million times lol. I usually skip the reactions. However an average person needs to hear this atleast 100 times and I wanted to be here for your 1st time. So excited for you to do this type of classic rock! You are correct about it being a crying shame that music isn’t like that anymore. Great reaction!
I loved your reaction. At 85 yearsof age, I grew up with ALL of this music - I love it - and I still love it! Yes, how cool is Ram Jam and their Black Betty. By now you must know by noiw that Black Betty is in reference to an "Old time" Rifle. I think this song goes WAY back to the 20's and 30's - even older than I, and I'm God Damned ancient. :-) I just subscribed to your channel - I love the way you roll. Peace Bro.
You've been enjoying some great classic southern rock. Ram Jam, Eagles, Lynard Skynard... all southern rock. I love watching how excited you get and how you'll just rock out. Keep 'em comin!
This is music from my time! i was a teenager in the mid to late '70's. We all knew this song. This was the era when money was limited, but smoking grass really wasn't! I didn't smoke weed, and neither did any of my friends. It simply wasn't "common" back then...EXCEPT for bands like this! Good song!
I'm such a fan now. Been binge watching. You make me proud to be a kid of the 70s. I love your reactions so much. It's like a whole new world is opening up for you..
I'm 58, and it quite literally makes me weep with joy when people find the music of my childhood. It's channels like yours that keep the music of the past alive. Keep it going kidda
Great one Bro'! My mom's side of the family is from Alabama/Tennessee. We know this whiskey fueled music. Ram Jam's Black Betty is a one hit wonder and the 70's. In the USA this genre is called Southern Rock, Southern-Fried Rock, or Deep-Fried Southern Rock, which is like calling it Rock Rock because the southern states is where rock came from. Other more successful bands other than Lynyrd Skynyrd which you mentioned are: ZZ Top (Texas Technically) and The Black Crowes are probably the next most successful to Lynyrd, Molly Hatchet, .38 Special, Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, Creedance Clearwater Revival (which i saw on your list), Black Oak Arkansas, Blackfoot, and a bunch more.
First recording of this song was in the 1930’s by James ‘Iron Head’ Baker, a traditional folk singer back in the day. Was imprisoned in a prison farm where this music was first recorded and archived for many years.
You pointed out how this song put you in the good mood, and that is the difference between the music of the 1970s and current day. Today people are so miserable (and are so afraid of dying they are too scared to live) but in the 70s we all loved life and it was filled with exuberance and cheer. Yes, cheer. We were all looking forward to going to the moon and Mars, and to all the things that the future held--especially for the people of the Western world, and then (in the 80s) women took over society, and their fear of everything was spread to their bubble-wrapped kids (something no father would have allowed in the 1970s) and with mind altering drugs that they forced on their little boys (check ADHD drugs) for doing nothing except being little boys that they could not keep up with after working all day--something women did not HAVE to do in the 1970s so they had time and energy to enjoy their kids and for their kids to enjoy life--all they wanted was what fathers had had in the 70s, a little time to unwind and relax after a day's work. I feel sorry for all of the kids your age, because mine is the last generation (for I don't know how long) that will experience the wonder of falling in love and lying back on a blanket of grass looking up at the starry night sky with the one we had fallen in love with as a romantic song (Moonlight Feels Right--Starbuck, for example) knowing that as we grew older we would marry and have kids and perhaps those kids would be born on Mars or some other cosmic body. When women took over society they grounded space travel to not only Mars but even to the moon, and a colony was suddenly out of the future. Misery set in, and the joy of love, romance, even life was drained from Western Society. Around the world the guiding light that had radiated outward around the world was extinguished, and with it HOPE for a better tomorrow.
They don’t make music like they did in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and even 90’s anymore. True talent with no auto tune or studio tricks. Like you I also grew up only listening to a limited scope of music but I branched out in my 30’s and discovered a world of amazingness. If you haven’t already (sorry I haven’t checked out your whole video catalog) please check out anything by Aussie rock legends Cold Chisel, AC/DC, INXS, and John Farnham (especially his version of the Beatles ‘Help’ live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra). You will not be disappointed 👌🏼 Best live performances also include Queen at Live Aid, Metallica Enter Sandman in Moscow and Phil Collins In The Air Tonight.
No one on this Planet at that time this Song was played where ever , Pup / Bar / Disco / Party what ever , wasn't freak out in enjoying this beat ... for shure . This deserves his own Place in the hall of fame !

Now,mate; you're crossing into the late 70's early 80's rock!! So much to cover!!! LETS GO!!!!!
dude! LOVE the dip back into Classic Rock and Roll!!! so many great genres...
Mollyboy, you are born to run a reaction channel. I love you
This is an awesome song and I actually have a playlist with all the reaction videos therein, but I have been waiting for yours!
Grand Funk Railroad…Must be LIVE….OUTSIDE LOOKING IN…7 million views…CLASSIC!
I’m 71 and I LOVE Black Betty, I never get tired of it, what a fantastic piece of rock music, and outside and live!!👍👍👍👍
Definitely 70's. We had the best decade in .music. I'm 70 now. Make you look differently at us oldies now?
No shit...im 70...we had the BEST !!
If no one has mentioned, there's an extended version with a longer guitar/drum collaboration I think you would seriously enjoy
I HAD THIS ALBUM WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. YESSS, 1970'S. I'M OLD, I LOVE MUSIC!! AWESOME REACTION MOLLYBOY 💙!! 😊🩷🤘✌️
"Black Betty had a child, bam a lam, damn thing gone wild, bam a lam"
This song was used in the movie Blow with Johnny Depp. Great movie and a great song.
I was in high school when this song was released. Rock N Roll! Glad you like it.
It's so awesome to see the young generation transform into an old soul. You are absolutely 💯 correct, music today is not the done like this.
If you want to hear a new sound:
Jethro Tull- Locomotive Breath LIVE (1982, Rockpop Concert)
Fantastic 🌹🌹🔥🔥🔥🔥
Keep in mind that back in those days there was no autotune for other methods of 'improving' music. What you hear is real.
Absolutely SPOT ON!
I have heard this song one million times lol. I usually skip the reactions. However an average person needs to hear this atleast 100 times and I wanted to be here for your 1st time. So excited for you to do this type of classic rock! You are correct about it being a crying shame that music isn’t like that anymore. Great reaction!
When I was a teen in the 70's, we often had field parties and sometimes there would be live bands playing. Good times.
Peace Bro.
Black Betty is so great! ONE HIT WONDER, SUCH A SHAME ,LOVED IT! Thanks for Jammin it😂Love your reactions and channel ❤ You ROCK ALWAYS 💯🤘✌️
Everyone thinks his guitar is a Gold Top. It isn't. He stripped the finish off and we're looking at the natural wood.
Ram Jam was a short-lived American rock band formed in New York City and active in 1977 and 1978, mainly known for their hit single "Black Betty".
I'm 58, and it quite literally makes me weep with joy when people find the music of my childhood. It's channels like yours that keep the music of the past alive. Keep it going kidda
G'Damn MollyBoy, thanks for the banger track!!! The best 2 minute song to ever exist. Keep up the great songs dude.
So glad I found this channel...you are a great reactor to watch. Good job man!
Your expressive face! We hardly needed words. Loved your reaction.
Great reaction. Their time changes were incredible. 🤠🤘🔥🤘
Appreciate you're ancestry.
5:06 The music back then WAS so much better!!!! Fact
My Guy....I love the fact that you reacted to Ram Jam....I LOVE IT....Thanks!!!!!!
well friend this is probably the most played hick wedding song ever .. the video is solid gold!! ❤💯🔥
"Black Betty" is a good introduction to the genre of Southern Rock.
First recording of this song was in the 1930’s by James ‘Iron Head’ Baker, a traditional folk singer back in the day. Was imprisoned in a prison farm where this music was first recorded and archived for many years.
Thank you England for mollyboy! Lol 😂
I'm FROM the 70's and enjoyed your reaction - very sincere, very authentic. THNX!
You will not be disappointed 👌🏼
Best live performances also include Queen at Live Aid, Metallica Enter Sandman in Moscow and Phil Collins In The Air Tonight.
EPIC!!!
No one on this Planet at that time this Song was played where ever , Pup / Bar / Disco / Party what ever , wasn't freak out in enjoying this beat ... for shure . This deserves his own Place in the hall of fame !
