i unashamedly took your advice a couple of years ago now when i did my Volvo, "home brew PW" for in between steps and a "commercial" one for the last stage , ok i used one you didn’t test this time, Upol slow, Still have most of the 5l of Upol as your advice saved me £.
Yes I noticed a Slight difference in effectiveness between the two with the nod going to the commercial one, but when you’re dealing with a large Volvo estate the £ saving is Worth it IMO.
Very nice to see your advice stood the test of time And a head to head with some of the commercial products and the result was it Still looks as good now as freshly done.
Incredible forensic review. I greatly appreciate your dedication. With your information, I have decided to add the hot water soap wash to degrease the polish oils. Brilliant and yes, you might induce a few very minor scratches prior to putting the ceramic coating on, but I have always thought about washing the car before coating, but as you said yourself, you talked yourself out of it! LOL. But I am hoping this will add a little more durability to the life of the coating. Jon, you are simply amazing.

Very useful in depth info, Jon. Could help beginner detailers troubleshoot coating problems. Great idea with the sanding a polish oil. Would be great if you could do a follow up select two distinct panel wipes (a water one and a slovent one) and do a vice versa test with polish follow up by a coating on a panel and measure durability. This is some wiki level info here. While most videos concern themselves with just the coatings, it is priceless to know how different polishes, panel wpies and paint systems react with coatings.

Interesting test. I’m thinking of coating the wife’s car this spring so this is good timing on this topic. I’ve always used IPA diluted with distilled water for sealant applications so I was just going to do the same thing with Gtechniq coating app. I’ve seen some pro retailers using dupli-color foaming panel prep in a can. I think auto body repair shops use this before painting. I think that would work as well but it’s a very harsh chemical stripper. For my Subaru with very soft paint I probably want to be less aggressive. And I know using undiluted isopropyl alcohol can damage some softer paints.

Thanks for this comparison. Glad you mentioned that it's important to do a strip wash before the IPA wipe. I think if you do a strip wash plus the home made IPA wipe it should work just as well as any brand wipe. A good strip wash soap and IPA solution should get the paint completely free of the polish. The wash should get the majority of the polish off, and the IPA will get whatever you missed in the wash.

One more option for you to consider is the Koch Chemie "Sil". Cost for 5l is 25 EUR where I'm from and the label suggests you should dilute 1:4 with demineralised water. Found it to be a great cost / performance solution.
Also wish you touched a bit on the topic of gloss loss / hazing when freshly refined panels are wiped with pure IPA or undiluted PW.
It's a bit of a hot topic on detailing forums. There's a lot of supporters of wiping with pure IPA for first / WIP inspection. On the other end there's just as many people who are against, as it's basically reversing all of the hard work that was just put in to the refining process.
My feeling is that while Gyeon is not as strong you can be rather liberal with the amounts you're spraying, and potentially do multiple passes without risking the hazing effect. Should be "noob friendly". Upping the strip-ability from there can easily bring unwanted effects and reverse your work if you're not careful (or simply not aware).
Personally I have a very similar work routine. Would use diluted IPA solution for the WIP inspection, and a diluted Koch Sil for the pre coating wipe.

never wipe with pure IPA mate. or I say never I would not do it, I would not go about 30% really. SIL is 50 quid now i think in the UK. Gyeon I think maybe a touch milder but limonene is very nice, I think its a good product. Im gonna look to put limonene in my homebrew i think. Koch SIL virtually is pure IPA I think mate.
Interesting subject Jon! I am thinking if the paint wasn't sanded these may have performed more similarly, even the home brew. I think the jury is still out on whether the home brew is any less effective, certainly seems to have done the job for ceramic coating prep. Suspect it just struggled due to the polish not sitting on the surface but instead becoming ingrained within all the surfex imperfections.
I was thinking about using APC or a degreaser to remove the polishing oils and then do a final wipe down with IPA for the coating but the method gyeon suggests sounds interesting as well I might give it a shot.

The issue I have with washing the car after polishing is that it's really hard to dry the car without properly wiping with a microfibre towel instead of using a leafblower/car dryer, since there is no hydrophobicity. This will definitely leave some micro marring. Also getting it completely dry, not to ruin the coating process can be tricky. Using panel wipes have worked great so far and I'm going to continue with those.

It sounds like you weren't happy with the test results in general - what would you do differently if you ran it again?
cheers m8. 1st test was a fail really. I would apply the coatings normally I think it wider strips and buff. And observe them for 6 months. putting them on a car rather than test panel would be better i think. 2nd test is valid and has a use but I think the sanded panel filled with oil is a lot harder to degrease than a smooth normal panel. so its also not that brilliant. but the IPA mix did not fair well in that test. so learnt some things I guess. its important to sort of just say when things dont go well and talk about if the test was flawed.

I’ve seen ceramic coatings last as long while with just a panel wipe after polishing. However, I’m not doubting washing/degreasing after polishing could provide even better results. Personally, I will never do it, as it an extra time consuming step that can also damage the newly polished finish.
Maybe a hand held steamer and towel mate , rather than hot wash after full detail , but like you say no one really does it but I get what they mean about using hot water 👍 good video mate
My guess is that Gyeon's instructions will be designed to give the best possible bond to your car's paint and hence create the ideal environment for thier product to do it's thing. However, that's not to say that it's going to be the best solution for absolute perfection of the finish.
I use gtechnic panel wipe and you need much per car whereas my home brewed one doesn't feel to be as efficient. By the way used the Bilt Hamber ceramic shampoo with spectacular results. Is it a game changer? Love and peace ✌

Yvan (ONR, DIY Detail etc) once said in a video you mix two parts original windex glass cleaner w ammonia with one part Acetone for a panel wipe.
For the 'homemade blend' is it OK to use autosmart's G101 as the mpc 2% portion? .....and one other thing....I saw another video where a guy said ipa can swell clear coat but I'm guessing at this weakness in the mixture there shouldn't be an issue right?

IPA can swell clear coat but so can lots of solvents and chems if you use them wrong matt. stick to 25-30% IPA to water spray on spread and buff and you will be fine mate. You could use a bit of G101 if you want sure.
I'm glad to see some companies recommending a post-polish wash prior to panel wiping. This is actually something I've always done but always felt I was being a bit OTT.
I usually spray the car down with a 5% mix of Surfex HD, gently hand wash, then a panel wipe before applying LSP. Never ran into issues, but likewise I've never noticed any dramatic improvement in LSP longevity.
Great Vid Jon...was genuinely going to ask if you made and used your own. Do you use ur own homebrew? Currently i'm using the GTECHNIQ panel wipe....which I like. Can I ask do you still use Surfex as a tyre cleaner? I am at 10% but looking to try something different....anything you'd recommend? Keep up the great work. All the best - Baz

Informative as always Jon. I wonder if snow foaming the car with BH Autofoam with some Surfex mixed in after polishing would be sufficient or whether a full contact wash would be necessary. Curious whether it actually makes any difference to the durability of coatings.
i think it would be sufficient yes. the contact clean is more to shift the dirt isnt it. so a prewash would be ideal but its drying it i think that could be the problem.
I see what you mean about drying, although it could be the companies are making an assumption that the detailers are using water filters when rinsing the car and blowers to dry the vehicle as opposed to just using a dry towel. Although in the Gyeon instructions I think it mentioned using a chamosis didn't it. So possible tail chasing as a result.
John, I was compounding, polishing and waxing my car over the past 2 days using maguiars. Unfortunately I have to do this outside. When using the compound and 205 polish I found it was hard to remove the polish despite working in small areas at a time (machine). So I tried using Angel wax easy strip and found I had to keep adding it, it would not dwell and lift in one go. I then experimented with auto glym fast glass, absolutely unbelievable at removing the left over polish.
My question is, have you tried this or have I messed up. The was went on great although durability will be a tester.
yes because fast glass is water based strip ease is not water based. Megs 205 is water based. A glass cleaner can make a great panel wipe and a good panel wipe makes a good glass cleaner. panel wipes though are not for removing the big thick layer of polish they are for degreasing panels after you wipe the polish off. you should work the 205 a bit less so it does not bed down. the new formulate ultimate compound is better in this regard. one tip with 205 have a bottle of DI water and if the 205 stiffens up and dries during use then one fine mist onto your buffing pad will help. you can do this with 205 but not other compounds.

You came up with intresting point - no diffrence in ceramic coating adhesion (at least short term) between treated and untreated panel - if so - why bother using any panel wipe at all ?
Everything I search for IPA wipe on Google, it shows Screwfix's No Nonsense Heavy Duty Degreaser, 5L for £7.99. Is it worth diluting that to use as a panel wipe?
U-POL System 20 Slow Panel Wipe is the best. It's only 22 quid for 5L.

Upol, panel wipe 5l slow drying Dave I think it only cost me 20 quid I used it last week after doing all the stages but not claying that's still scared the s*** out of me, but getting back to the panel wipe that seems to be pretty good for 20 quid for 5 litres and I have been told you can water it down with distilled water I also tested out the hot water and Fairy liquid on a panel of my pride and joy Skoda being the paintwork is immaculate anyway got to admit the Old fairy did destroy a lot of the oil,s out of the Polish but the panel wipe side you can see the difference I also think I'm now heading towards the bilt-hamber products thanks to your videos they seem to be a no nonsense company as for working out your own home brew with 99% alcohol do not go there, I probably get pissed up and be in hospital 99% do not put ideas my head as usual Dave a pleasure🤣🤣🤣

I believe that for best results you may have to dilute ONR with filtered boiled water that has cooled down slightly (obviously) and then used that to remove the brunt of oils off the surface, then go over with IPA/ Prep.
ONR is my clay lube, drying aid, quick detailer and now my pre-panel wipe of choice, something with that much ability to leave the surface without detergents residue is ideal for me, I will test this out soon I think.

I’ve never heard of anyone boiling water with ONR. I just use distilled water. It’s like 60 cents a gallon. I’m a huge fan of ONR and use it for everything too. What’s the benefit of boiling? I’ve also heard that onr can leave behind polymers. So maybe that’s not the best idea for paint prep if that’s going to be the case. Good for rinseless wash though. For paint prep I think I’m going to stick to IPA.

If you use a machine such as the Flex PXE 80 to apply the polish it would me more accurate because the machine does the exact same thing every time. The only thing you'd have to controll is the speed and pressure, but you could use a timer to measure your polishing speed.
Surely if you use a microfibre with the panel wipe on the clear coat and that is OK then the same microfibre with hot soap and water would be just as safe to not damage it after washing with soap and water?
I think your saying can you wash it with a microfiber cloth with hot soap? answer is yes if you want to mate. its not quite as safe as a wash mitt but if the car is clean and your just doing it to strip you could if you want to to maybe get at the paintwork more. I think a sponge might actually be good at this.
Would distilled water be better than de-ionized? My understanding is that distilled, especially double or triple filtered, is more "pure" and free of more contaminants.
DI i think is the best I could be wrong. I just buy a few jerry cans of like carplan DI water.

fairy liquid they mean i think. concentration can vary, I dont use it generally it normally has alcohol solvent in it but I find it can leave residue even if you rinse well.

Well this could open a can of worms, all that work refining and a final polish then re-wash with washing up liquid sounds crazy but I can see the point and understand the idea behind it.... But I was once told not to wash car with washing up liquid because it strips the waxes and any protection on it.

I get your first point because after polishing you could potentially put scratches into the clear coat from washing again.
But your second point though is the whole idea. The point in using the washing up liquid is to remove the residue left by the polish and degrease, any protection will have already been removed by carrying out a strip wash prior to polishing to remove any wax or sealant. If you don't then you're probably wasting your time and polish and aren't going to remove much if any clear coat because there's a barrier there. But by polishing the panel you will be removing any protection anyway...eventually.

What product do you use to clean your white Board on the wall? Some strong degreasers strip the coatings and then the markers stain.
Water based is prolly better so IPA and water mix and elephant roll
Hi John, I remember you bought a CarChem bundle which had their prep solution in it. Did you ever manage to test that? If so, where would you say it would fit in, performance wise, with the ones in this video? Was looking at it and seems good value but not much in the way of reviews of their stuff aside from the shampoo.

I had a sample of CarChem prep and I think it's a got a high concentration of IPA in it, not sure what else. I don't rate it. I think their shampoo and fallout remover are well regarded, but nobody raves about their other products.

After watching this vid Iv just decided to go for upol panel wipe gona cost me £14 .65 to buy 1l of ipa and 1l of apc Koch green star not including di water and 5ltrs of upol slow degreaser costs £18.43 so it only cost me £3.78 more to get 5ltrs of upol where as the 1l of ipa diluting it to 25% to make a panel wipe I would only get 2ltrs of it just makes lot more sense to get the upol

Isn't a hot soapy wash the traditional way of removing silicones? It would make sense to get rid of those first. That was always the way before "detailing" became more than just paying attention to what you are doing.
For the homemade panel wipe is it worth altering the ratios to improve performance?
i would stick to 25-30% mate IPA can damage soft clears as it gets stronger.

they all different mate, its hard to generalise. They can use sodium based cleaners or salt acids but not really salt as such.
Is it really necessary to use degreaser and the panel wipe before doing ceramic or wax ?
as opposed to just a panel wipe on its own?? Im not 100% sure but I think hot water and water based degreaser like fairy liquid really does break down polishing oil. and then the panel wipe can get the last remaining traces of oil.
its hard to know.. but they fact 2 of the panel wipe brands suggest you use hot water and soap before the panel wipe suggests it might be important.
I've been using some tetrosyl degreaser. In theory is this as good?
yes I went through 5 litres of it without problem.. but give it longer to flash in winter outside of workshop environments. sub 10 its slow to vape. but great value.
Should have used it on a clean panel and used you paint depth gauge thingy lol
When going to decontamination and before ever polishing I strongly suggest warm water wash with Dawn soap. Then I actually use Optimum power clean diluted 5 to 1 and let dwell for a few minutes. Then wash again with Dawn soap.
Then iron remover and clay bar stage pending how bad contamination is. Then wash again with Dawn soap and or P&S pearl to end with a pH neutral soap 👍

Always use home brew and BH as a final wipe before coating. Found some compounds need more siping than others.

I think its good. At about 15 quid for 5 litres its worth trying. I dont know what Im not buying more to be honest.

no its not water miscible thats a bad idea. you could do this with the other ones though but I would not diluate unless they say you can.
some say, these products dont strip competitors wax, only their own 100%. be interesting to see, i guess theyd only test with their own waxes, would make sense. I found TFR very good at striping everything, if a little harsh so maybe APC would work being a degreaser and solvent

I watched a video recently where the detailer washed the car after he corrected it and I taught WTF is he at? It just looked wrong, have never seen it done this way before. Funny that he was actually doing it the correct way.i personally wouldn't do it.
GTechniq panel wipe is ~96% ethanol and 2-4% ethyl acetate.
I checked the SDS before this video and Im sure it said toulene as well as some other alcohol solvents. Funny enough I go back to look at the SDS and the document has been removed. who knows. other versions of the SDS are kicking around which state 70 ethanol 30 ipa 1-10% . appreciate SDS is never an accurate ingredients list either way.

So Jon how come your saying to use apc over sles in hole brew ipa? Not that’s it’s a problem just want to know the difference
APC is a mix of a load of surfactants. EG its a detergent blend. SLES is just one material. But essentially no one is going to have SLES or want to buy some just for this. But also surfex seems more effective in there than SLES. its more powerfull as an emulsifier.

It seems like washing with hot water would clean well enough to pretty much make the IPA wipe after a waste of time. Only issue is I'm not sure how I could go about washing with hot water (keeping it hot through the wash) and dish detergent.
You need surfactants and solvents to properly degrease. simply analogy. do your dishes with just warm water and no detergent.
@@ForensicDetailing oh, I meant it seems like the warm water with dish soap would pretty much make the IPA wipe after a pointless step....but I suppose the dish liquid may leave some minimal residue that's removed by the ipa.

To be fair wouldn't a better test have been just to polish the panel to bare paint. Apply a coating of something easy to strip off. Tape off the test sections then run a last step correction compound over each section and buff off. Apply the panel wipes to each section, wipe off then remove tape (The initial coating will allow visible separation of test sections). Then simply do a water repellence test. Clean, bare residue free paint will have extremely poor hydrophobics so the more hydrophobic a section is the less effective the panel wipe was.
I know this vid is getting on a bit and I'm late to the party but maybe something to consider in the future or you could tell me if you wish why everything I've said is complete B*llocks. Keep up the good work.

Hi Jon, i think the marks you are seeing are high spots from the ceramic as you did not level them before the flashed and dried
yes its wierd that the homebrew had none though.. but they first test was a fail really. 2nd test shows a difference in performance.

I was told use of APC in ur wash process will strip wax,oil and sealant
go watch me test waxes with wave after wave of apc hits... APC can slowly degrade wax like any detergent. it can not strip it though (only the final reminants of old product)
