Thanks for the very useful video. I like to keep a spray bottle of 15% IPA, a spray bottle of distilled water and a spray bottle of 10:1 ONR under my seat as spot cleaning and rinse solutions when I'm on the road. I worked out the math for a 15% IPA solution for different strength alcohols: For 99% alcohol - 27oz distilled water + 4oz alcohol For 91% alcohol - 24oz distilled water + 4oz alcohol For 70% alcohol - 22oz distilled water + 5 oz alcohol Each of these will yield a 15% IPA solution exactly.
@@natathehard Sure, the proportion would be 20 parts of the 70% isopropyl alcohol to 21 parts distilled water to yield a 40% IPA solution by volume. When we're talking about a 40% IPA solution we are saying that the ratio of the amount of alcohol, the solute, to the total amount of solution is 40% or .4. We can express this as a fractional equation with the letters A and W denoting the unknown amounts of alcohol in the bottle to the unknown amount of distilled water, respectively. In equation form: .7*A/(.7*A + W) = .4 We can multiply both sides by the expression in parenthesis to eliminate the fraction and simplify to get: .7*A = .4*.7*A + .4*W, or .7*A = .28*A +.4*W. Subtracting .28*A from both sides gives us .42*A = .4*W Multiplying both sides by 50 gives us 21*A = 20*W, or A/W = 20/21. I hope this helps. You can use this formula to calculate how much alcohol to mix with water to get any desired concentration of IPA solution.

Truely love this, sharing with the detailing community is something we should all do! :) I have something as a APC actually... All you need is natural vinegar, baking soda, glycerine, hemp oil or soy oil and water , use some etheric oils for the scent. You can easily find your own solution while experimenting with these ingrediënts and come out with a pretty good and selfmade APC ;-) Then again, I mostly used to use these for example on truckbeds etc or the back of dirty vans. Don't use this on the interior, mainly because of the oils in it. But it's always fun to experiment with such things ofcourse :) works great for housecleaning aswell fe. Haven't found a decent recipe for the interiors yet.

Hi Pan 😊thank you so much for this video it really helped me to understand this better.. I wanted to know with the ratio you diluted the 99% Ipa.... What percentage will the 32 ounce bottle dilution be ,with the 4 ounce IPA to 28 ounce distilled water? Thank you ❤
Great video. Question from watching your other videos. I used the turtle wax sealant for some protection. Now I am going to use the 3d one step to correct very minor swirls and some wax protection for a shine. Do I use this before I use the 3d polish? And I am looking for a great 1 step shine pad for a 5 inch da polisher. Keep up the great videos. I have gained a lot of detailing knowledge from you!!!
After using the 3D One polish, you will use the IPA paint prep to spray and wipe the surface. To find out great pad and polish combinations, watch my popular video here: ruclips.net/video/2JDvQBs1viM/видео.html
Hi Pan, Did I miss something for the 70% IPA? (See minute 9:26 of the video) (8 oz x 70% = 5.6) / 32 oz = 17.5% Should this be (6 oz x 70% = 4.2) / 32 = 13.1% ? It is then within your recommended 10%-15% range, similar to the 99% IPA (see minute 8:10 in the video) (4 oz x 99% = 3.96 ) / 32 = 12.3%. -Randy

Pan I’m making my own IPA panel wipe for pre coating with a ceramic. I’m wondering if you ever add a APC like express interior cleaner or maybe Green Star to help remove more grease/ oily residue? Really enjoy your videos. Thanks brother Fred
Some do, but that's up to you to test and see. I prefer using dedicated panel prep sprays (like CarPro Eraser or Gyeon Prep). I use the specific brand's prep spray. If I apply a CarPro coating, I use CarPro Eraser. If I apply a Gyeon coating, I use Gyeon Prep. etc. Also, some people like to wash the car again after polishing, as sometimes an IPA alone won't fully remove polishing oils, depending on which compounds and polishes you used. I will have a video on this topic coming Saturday.
@pan I hope you and your family are well. Thank you for car detailing videos that come with knowledge - Awesome! How would or should I remove prior waxing before I do my car detailing correctly? Steps I took in May/June 2023 before deep diving into car detailing: 1. Rinsed with power washer 2. Foamed and hand washed using Meguiar's Gold Class Soap 3. Meguiars Ultimate compound 4. Meguiars Ultimate Polish 5. Meguiars Gold Class Paste Wax I plan on doing the car detailing correctly now: 1. Foam then hand wash using Meguiars Gold Class Soap 2. Meguiars Iron Remover 3. Clay Bar with Meguiars Quick Detailer 4. Flipping a coin on using Meguiars Ultimate Compound or Meguiars Mirror Glaze Ultra cut compound 5 Flipping a coin on using Meguiars Ultimate Polish or Meguiars Mirror Glaze Polish 6. IPA wipe down 7. Meguiras Gold Class Paste wax
@@PanTheOrganizer why stick with the Ultimate products over mirror glaze products? Would the new steps remove the old wax? If vehicle color plays a role: My vehicle is a black Dodge Durango srt with black rims and black tubular running boards.
Question of personal preference. And machine polishing will strip any previous protection. That's the only way to ensure 100% removal of any previous protection by the way. Stripping shampoos alone aren't enough to remove more durable waxes, sealants and especially ceramic coatings. Stripping shampoos can't put a dent into true coatings. Only paint correction will remove those. You need mechanical abrasion.
Cool video Pan and I really appreciate the video. I remember a while back I was watching a Meguiars webinar and they were talking about M122. The comment which caught my attention was some IPA wipes can cause the metal to swell. I think you touched on this when you were talking about IPA dilution ratios. A subject I am studying is clear coat. The term paint correction seems to be universal but we are not correcting the paint on modern cars. All we are doing is making smaller scratches in the clear coat and calling it paint correction or enhancement. I would love to hear your knowledge behind the chemistry of clear coat and how the science behind soft and hart paint. Thank you for the video.
I'm not a paint expert unfortunately, that would be more a discussion for the inventer of modern clear coat, Dr David Ghodoussi which is the owner of Optimum Polymer Technologies. He knows a thing or two about car paint and clear coat hehe. Perhaps I can try to interview him on the topic one day.

New to removing scratches and will start by washing in dawn using an iron remover then clay the surface. Then use a compound to remove hard water some scratches then polish and finally the turtle wax with graphene and siO2. I will make my own spray to use after the polisher before adding the turtle wax. Is this a good plan or did I miss something? Thanks for good explanations and product recommendations.
Make your own spray?? Unless you are a chemist, which doesn't seem to be the case, I wouldn't recommend that. Use appropriate and compatible automotive grade products. See how I apply the Turtle Wax Graphene Flex Wax spray in this video: ruclips.net/video/b5BjDzItlr8/видео.html
Thanks Pan, excellent advice as always. My question is an area that you touched base on regarding staying in the same ecosystem if you will. So if using DiY coatings for example is it critical or even required to use their panel prep or would the homemade IPA do just fine in most scenarios? Thank you as always, so helpful
There's always a debate on that topic, but in general, it's recommended to use the same panel prep brand as the coating you are applying. Yvan himself recommends this (DIY Detail). Just to be safe with chemical compatibility.
I had the 25% recipe down for my first DIY IPA but I didn't know it could hurt soft paint (which mine is) - thanks for the heads up and alternative recommendation!
Would you give some examples of soft ceramic coatings? Are there any rule of thumb to use in deciding when to use a soft versus a hard ceramic coating? Is there a general statement you can make about the durability or ease of application of a soft versus a hard coat ceramic coating?
hello friend great job you do! A question that I have been asking myself for years? Is it true that before applying a ceramic sealer, some companies that make ceramics recommend a previous wash with lukewarm water and a dishwasher before using the cleaners they use?
I never heard that, but it's quite possible, as they likely want to make sure people remove any polishing oils from the surface before applying the coating, and if they aren't using an appropriately diluted IPA (or the appropriate panel prep spray from the same company) then at least washing the car will degrease it. The only thing to be careful with should you want to wash the car before the IPA, is make sure to thoroughly dry it, as you don't want water dripping when you apply the coating. In my IPA home made cleaner, I was using almost 50% 😮 too much. That being said if ever you have to use any 3M tape I recommend to clean before with pure alchool.
@@PanTheOrganizer awesome! Thanks Pan! I really appreciate your quick responses 😎👍 The coating I plan to use due to pricing is Griots garage 3-1 ceramic wax spray after polishing using the DIY detailing gold standard polish.
Hi Pam. I wonder if it would be ok if after a pre wash with lift, wash with reset from car pro, iron decon and rinse I use the IPA before aply Bead Maker, or may be the reset would be enought. Thanks !
The more time you spend prepping the paint the better, before applying any paint protection. But in the case of Bead Maker, it's just a regular sealant so it doesn't last that long (3-4 weeks normally). We mainly use it for amplifying gloss and slickness on longer lasting existing protection. So IPA wipe wouldn't be as crucial before applying Bead Maker. I typically wash my ceramic coated car with a good snow foam (CarPro Lift is excellent), then hand wash with CarPro Reset, and use Bead Maker either as a drying aid when towel drying, or, if I'm blow drying the car, use Bead Maker at the end like a quick detailer. No IPA needed in this scenario, as Bead Maker is more for maintenance and a nice glossy and slick topper.
@@PanTheOrganizer tanks a lot. This Saturday I took a mini detailling course. It has been an 8 hour course. It has been very interesting and I'm fascinated by the world of detailing. In the course they recommended a gyeon Q² Wax, In that case, before using the wax, would you recommend using the IPA? I have no coating in my paint and need protection. I appreciate your prompt and complete response.
Excellent video! I enjoy savings on products and this method is a big saving for me as I use IPA prep before applying any protection from wax and sealants to ceramic and graphene coatings. An IPA panel prep is also very important when doing marine work :) Note: if you have a scent that is not oil-based, you can add a couple of drops into your dilution and have a pleasant scent while you work.
Would it be safe to use an IPA for freshly painted rock chips after a day or 2 of cure? Going to be wet sanding, and filling chips with paint/clear before compounding/polishing the whole car and would love to get the car ceramic coated right after.
Yes Pan, what another great video...I was on training for the week hence I'm commenting now...do you think it's possible that you can make a video on how to make a detail spray with raw material instead of a using a rinseless wash and a decon spray (iron remover)💣💥
I'm confused. You want a spray that is a rinseless wash and iron remover combined? That doesn't exist to my knowledge. And it would be too complicated to formulate a DIY iron remover and cleaner with TGA active ingredient.
Pan great video as always. Is it advisable / ok to use my homemade IPA 10 or 15% cleaner on my brand new cars interior, dash, door panels etc. before using my UV protection / preserver. I will follow up IPA with 303 Thanks in advance

Thanks for the very useful video.
I like to keep a spray bottle of 15% IPA, a spray bottle of distilled water and a spray bottle of 10:1 ONR under my seat as spot cleaning and rinse solutions when I'm on the road. I worked out the math for a 15% IPA solution for different strength alcohols:
For 99% alcohol - 27oz distilled water + 4oz alcohol
For 91% alcohol - 24oz distilled water + 4oz alcohol
For 70% alcohol - 22oz distilled water + 5 oz alcohol
Each of these will yield a 15% IPA solution exactly.
On the last one it should be 5 oz of alcohol, not water
@@Fiftyfive45 Thanks for pointing out my mistake.
I need the dilution for 40% IPA for 70% alcohol for panel wipe a PPF car. Can you let me know how calculate?
@@natathehard Sure, the proportion would be 20 parts of the 70% isopropyl alcohol to 21 parts distilled water to yield a 40% IPA solution by volume.
When we're talking about a 40% IPA solution we are saying that the ratio of the amount of alcohol, the solute, to the total amount of solution is 40% or .4. We can express this as a fractional equation with the letters A and W denoting the unknown amounts of alcohol in the bottle to the unknown amount of distilled water, respectively. In equation form:
.7*A/(.7*A + W) = .4
We can multiply both sides by the expression in parenthesis to eliminate the fraction and simplify to get:
.7*A = .4*.7*A + .4*W, or
.7*A = .28*A +.4*W.
Subtracting .28*A from both sides gives us
.42*A = .4*W
Multiplying both sides by 50 gives us
21*A = 20*W, or
A/W = 20/21.
I hope this helps. You can use this formula to calculate how much alcohol to mix with water to get any desired concentration of IPA solution.
@@videomaniac108 Ok but for example in a 32 oz bottle what is the dilution alcohol..? Water..? For a 40% IPA

Truely love this, sharing with the detailing community is something we should all do! :)
I have something as a APC actually...
All you need is natural vinegar, baking soda, glycerine, hemp oil or soy oil and water , use some etheric oils for the scent.
You can easily find your own solution while experimenting with these ingrediënts and come out with a pretty good and selfmade APC ;-)
Then again, I mostly used to use these for example on truckbeds etc or the back of dirty vans. Don't use this on the interior, mainly because of the oils in it.
But it's always fun to experiment with such things ofcourse :) works great for housecleaning aswell fe.
Haven't found a decent recipe for the interiors yet.

-Randy

I’m making my own IPA panel wipe for pre coating with a ceramic. I’m wondering if you ever add a APC like express interior cleaner or maybe Green Star to help remove more grease/ oily residue?
Really enjoy your videos.

Fred
Some do, but that's up to you to test and see. I prefer using dedicated panel prep sprays (like CarPro Eraser or Gyeon Prep). I use the specific brand's prep spray. If I apply a CarPro coating, I use CarPro Eraser. If I apply a Gyeon coating, I use Gyeon Prep. etc.
Also, some people like to wash the car again after polishing, as sometimes an IPA alone won't fully remove polishing oils, depending on which compounds and polishes you used. I will have a video on this topic coming Saturday.
Thank you

@pan I hope you and your family are well. Thank you for car detailing videos that come with knowledge - Awesome!
How would or should I remove prior waxing before I do my car detailing correctly?
Steps I took in May/June 2023 before deep diving into car detailing:
1. Rinsed with power washer
2. Foamed and hand washed using Meguiar's Gold Class Soap
3. Meguiars Ultimate compound
4. Meguiars Ultimate Polish
5. Meguiars Gold Class Paste Wax
I plan on doing the car detailing correctly now:
1. Foam then hand wash using Meguiars Gold Class Soap
2. Meguiars Iron Remover
3. Clay Bar with Meguiars Quick Detailer
4. Flipping a coin on using Meguiars Ultimate Compound or Meguiars Mirror Glaze Ultra cut compound
5 Flipping a coin on using Meguiars Ultimate Polish or Meguiars Mirror Glaze Polish
6. IPA wipe down
7. Meguiras Gold Class Paste wax
Those steps seem absolutely fine. Also, stick to the Ultimate compound and Ultimate Polish.
@@PanTheOrganizer why stick with the Ultimate products over mirror glaze products?
Would the new steps remove the old wax?
If vehicle color plays a role:
My vehicle is a black Dodge Durango srt with black rims and black tubular running boards.

Thank you Pan. What happened with the enthusiastic greeting you had, I liked it!!
It will be back no worries haha
I had the 25% recipe down for my first DIY IPA but I didn't know it could hurt soft paint (which mine is) - thanks for the heads up and alternative recommendation!

Would you give some examples of soft ceramic coatings? Are there any rule of thumb to use in deciding when to use a soft versus a hard ceramic coating? Is there a general statement you can make about the durability or ease of application of a soft versus a hard coat ceramic coating?
Thanks Pan another Awesome video
Thanks for watching!
hello friend great job you do!

Yes an IPA is always a good idea before applying any form of paint protection.
Some great information there, Pan! Cheers👍
Thanks!!
Thanks Brian!
What types of scents that are not oil-based?
@@kevinmioto2248 There are many that are water-based. I find mine at Walmart.
Hi Pan what do you do with new foam pads ? Do you prime them? Or just put your 3 to 4 pea size drops on.
I will follow up IPA with 303
Thanks in advance
For interior surfaces, I prefer a proper interior cleaner, like the one I use here: ruclips.net/video/bz7h-HfSdRg/видео.htmlsi=x7ubnRsct1bDthvU
Great explanation. My question is after you made the ipa in the bottle would that be diluted.
No you'd use it as is, once diluted as per these instructions.
Hi Pan!! Concerning IPA's: could you, for instance, dilute CarPro Eraser with distilled water to make it more economical? Never had to worry about the price before... thnx!!!
I don’t spray gtechniq directly on my paint not sure what is in it but I feel it’s by far the strongest panel wipe with the solvents in it.
It's one of the strongest panel wipes indeed.
Thank you for this I really needed this video now I know how to properly use it😂
👍🏻
Awesome Pan. Love The Video. Just wondering what the dilution will be with the 23 Oz Pressol Spray Bottles by Chance. Would it be 4 Oz of isopropyl and 19 Oz of distilled water for the 99% isopropyl Alcohol
It would be roughly 3 oz of 90 or 99% IPA (doesn't really matter) and 20 oz of distilled water.
@@PanTheOrganizer thank you sir
@@PanTheOrganizer it's actually 25Oz. My bad
Just use this formula, and you'll have 2 oz of free space. No worries.
Hello PAN, thanks for amazing videos. I have improved a lot in detailing after watching your videos. Can you please confirm if we can use Deionized Water instead of Distilled water. Thanks
