Wow... best "get up to speed fast" camera video I've seen. I appreciate the explanation for the menu choices were made vs many videos that just show that the options exist.
Hi Maarten, a very useful video. I just bought the RX10 and your video gave me a kick start to use it, so I would like to thank you for this. Next Monday I will go to Gilze-Rijen Air Base to test it for the first time on moving helicopters (I bought this camera for its video capabilities only). I find this controls and possibilities on this camera impressive for a 1600 euro camera. Compared to the Z6II of Nikon which I also have it is, which is 2000 euro, it is impressive from Sony. I am heavily attached to my Nikon for shooting video, but I would not be surprised if the Sony will become my primary camera for the quick snapshots at the airbase as it has an outstanding color profile inventory! Keep up the good work, I love your tutorials 😎
Pretty sure that (depending on your lenses) they both have a place in your kit. If you are using both for a shoot, I do recommend that you shoot a colour chart on each for each location - they can be hard to match.
Thank you so much Maarten! I must admit that I used this video as guidance for my Sony RX10 (which I purchased a few years ago) as there's not much info on RUclips for this particular model. Now to put it to the test...! Thanks again. :)
I learned more about my camera in 3 minutes of this video than I have with a class I attempted on one of those education websites. Good Lord this was dense.
awesome advanced tips, been shooting with this camera for 2 years and picked up some great advice from this. especially the stabilizer being off while on a tripod. thanks !!
Still learning all the features of my RX10m4 but still manage to get great images. Filming with it at my granddaughters dance recital next weekend so don’t have a lot of time to get up to speed. I filmed last year and they turned out great but I don’t remember the settings I used. I have never shot raw and am not comfortable enough yet to go fully manual. I think I used Program Auto but don’t remember anything else. Are you able to help me with some of the important settings that I will need to set my camera at to film the kids on stage with lighting while I sit in the dark auditorium. I am not up close but not in the balcony either. Probably near the back though as we will be sitting with a friend in a wheelchair.
I was looking for a camcorder and started to evaluate the FDR-AX700, then I came across this video, after watching the "Detailed and extensive hands on review (4k)" video. For the same price, would it be good to consider the RX10 IV, as both have 1 inch sensors? I would mostly use the camera for video purposes but the idea of 24fps for stills is good. What would you suggest?
Thank you for this clear explanation of the video-settings. In my camera I can't find the 24 fps setting. Is that because I have a European version of the RX10M4?
Hi, I just saw your video, looks nice. Just a quick question will this video setting help in making planes landing take off video? or have you got any other video about settings?
Yes, these are good general purpose settings that should work for all but extreme conditions. If you find the planes are a little blurry try 60 frames, 1/120 shutter - however that may make them look a little jumpy.
When in Auto, Program, or Aperture mode, and the camera has to select a shutter speed, why does the logic not follow the 180 degree shutter speed rule (like your using). My camera usually picks a faster speed, and if I zoom out, it gets even faster (following the focal length rule). I notice it at least picks a slower speed then when you shoot stills, so it’s as if the camera is compromising somewhat and trying to reduce the shutter speed. What’s your opinion on that? I wonder why there’s not an option in the menu to force the 180 degree rule, if possible to get.
I assume you're talking about video. So the reality is that 1/60 would overexpose most exterior shots, so it's rarely feasible for the camera to select it on its own, unless you are using an ND filter. Anyway, I'd always recommend that you shoot video in M - just so that the camera isn't making unwanted adjustments in the middle of a shot. And don't get fixated on 180 - a concept that comes from film motion picture cameras that had very limited flexibility and always shot at 24fps. There are very few situations where 1/60 does not produce the appropriate results in a modern digital camera.
@@twopassionateshooters6659 Thanks, always nice to hear from someone who understands that this concept or "rule" isn't really valid in the days of digital. Next, lets work on convincing manufacturers to use the term "gain" instead of ISO.
Great summary of all these settings. Do you have recommendations for keeping wildlife subjects in focus? Is there a mode that will track an animal as it's distance to the camera changes?
Thanks for the video, a question... how to keep the camera recording? My camera turn off aroun 26 minutes of rev, how to keep the camera record or what bottom have to press to star again rec? Thanks
Thanks for the kind words. The camera, like many other still factor cameras that shoot video, is limited to a recording length under 30 minutes to avoid some European import duty. Ridiculous, I know. Worst here is that at the end of the time, there is no sound that it has stopped (unlike when you press the button to stop). But just press the record button to start recording again. The only way around this is to use an external recorder, like those sold by Atomos.
Hi! Is better RX 10 iv o Sony A6700 and Lens Sony 75/350? I have seen also the full frame camera but the lens are very heavy and big.. I want a camera for my travel with quality images and possibile good zoom that can integrate my IPhone 15 pro max. Thanks you
The RX10 has a longer zoom, is somewhat smaller and lighter but the tradeoff is a smaller sensor. For good quality travel images, the RX10 would be my choice.
Thanks for the video Maarten. Just want to ask, can you also extract an 8-megapixel jpg images from 4k video, in the Sony RX 10 mark IV itself? Similar to what Panasonic is doing on their 4K photo.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. It's not like the Panasonic, but Sony does have "photo capture", which enables you to play the video, select the frame and capture a still from it. Note that the shutter speed for video does not typically lend itself well to stills.
I really like the way you explain and your professionalisme. Congrats!. Do you have a similar video for stills/moving photography settings for wild life, especially on birds sitting somewhere and when flying in the air? This would help me when I go to the Everglades... Many thanks already in advance!
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. I have not - there are just too many variables to consider - and the advice is pretty much the same for all cameras. You'll need a long/fast lens, and likely a tripod or one with excellent stabilization. You'll need a fast shutter speed (so S mode is likely most appropriate) 1/500, or maybe higher - depends on the lens, distance, speed of flight, etc. Hope this helps, enjoy your trip. NTSC is compatible with TV sets and screens in areas where NTSC is the video standard (like North America), PAL is compatible with sets and screens in PAL areas (mostly Europe). Use either if your output is the web (including RUclips). Although the original broadcast standards were different (625/30 frames lines in NTSC, 525/25 in PAL) the resolution differences went away with HD.

Why my sony don't have PlayMemories Home? My camera recording time only 29m 50s. In the book Rx10 IV recording up to 29m. My Camera version 2.0. Pleased help. Thanks
Sony has changed the name of their app to ImagingEdge. The recording time of all Sony models released in 2017 was limited to 29:50. What do you need help with?
@@alannguyen2010 Yes, just below the table on the page you're referencing: "Continuous movie shooting is possible for a maximum of approximately 29 minutes at a time with the camera’s default settings and an ambient temperature of approximately 25°C (77°F)".
Hello and thanks for all your Sony RX10 IV videos. May I ask you, I'vew heard, that 24fps with longer shutter and manual ISO is the best settings for cinematic look (like movies). Can you describe it to me? Thanks.
Well, if you are trying to emulate the settings used in traditional film cinema production, they would shoot 24fps with a shutter of 1/48 (or so). Movie projectors also run at 24 frames per second. In general I would recommend using manual settings for all exposure parameters, as well as colour balance and focus if you're going for a filmic look. It's likely also preferable to shoot with (manual) prime lenses, as there are few zooms in movies and they generally provide a nice background defocus. That said, any video your produce, unless it is going to be projected in a cinema, is going to be seen on a video screen at 30 frames (in North America - 25 in Europe). It's always best to match your frame rate to the display device. And in general, to get the right perception of motion blur, 1/60 (or so) is the right setting to use. Hope this helps.
In regions where the mains frequency is 25Hz, that's the default for the camera's frame rat.e If you want/need 24/30/60, then the menu can change the setting to NTSC.
I've had to buy two. I use it a lot. Over time, the video quality gets worse and worse and increases in grain. Is there anything I can do to help this?
Love your advanced options. One question, is the image stabilization for video shooting compromised when shooting in 4K as compared to shooting in FHD?
Thanks for your kind words, always nice to see your avatar. I didn't think so, I'm pretty sure it's the same sensor area. In any event, in camera stabilization is good for stills, but is rarely effective for video.
Of course it is compromised! With 4K you cannot choose anything but standard stab, which I believe is the optical. When shooting 1080p you can use electronic stab on top of the optical. Shooting 4K without a gimbal is a mission next to impossible
I use the Rodelink wireless kit - bhpho.to/2BHA7gT - as detailed here: ruclips.net/video/WqHkXOiLSUU/видео.html. I can also suggest the Saramonic - bhpho.to/2FdLC4K - a two mic kit I reviewed here: ruclips.net/video/-NBUeGGjG1g/видео.html

Wow! 8 minutes of condensed know-how and knowledge! Subscribed. I just bought a RX10 IV and would describe myself as "rusty amateur" so really appreciate these pro tips. Do you also have best settings for stills photography too? All the best, Rob
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Stills settings are much more dependent on the nature of the image you're trying to capture, it's not really possible to do this kind of explanation. However, use AF single, wide, Program mode with Auto ISO and auto white balance. That will cover most situations.
Thanks Maarten! Will give it a go! I really appreciate your content and your audience seems a knowledgeable bunch too! Spreek je ook Nederlands? Just curious.
You should set the ISO manually depending on the lighting. Otherwise, the camera will continually be making visible adjustments that will be distracting while watching and make editing difficult.
Of course it does, and in order to record those changes correctly, you'll need manual ISO. I thought you were asking about video, as that's the topic of this post. All of my replies are for video recording.
Please provide more details - what's the difference between the times you can and cannot? What software are you using? How are you importing the files to your computer? How are you importing them into your video editing software?
Hi and thanks for the reply,Am new and a beginner, am using Sony rx10mk4 with adobe elements premier 2018,sc,hc memory card 64 gb and my settings is on RAW and JPEG ....but can't view my videos files
I hope someone can help me, but my RX10 IV cant record 4k 30 fps at 60M and 100M. it can only record 4K in 25 fps. An the same on Full HD, I cant record 60 fps. It might be my SD card, but by looking at the specs for the card, it should be able to record footage at 4k 60 fps. And my camera is now updated to 2.00 software.
Great video thanks 👍 Basically, at the same price of the Sony AX700 Camcorder -- I got a better video-camera with an excellent stills camera for free with the Sony RX0M4.
I compared the RX10 II to the X70, which is their professional 1-inch. I couldn't see the difference. These are monster cameras for video. On the Zebras, did you know that the reason they have various percentage (%) levels you can set it to because some people set them according to skin color, not white, as you did with the chart. Over-exposing skin is the biggest no-no, so if I was shooting you I might set it to 70%. I believe the Rhode mic is overkill for your audience. Sony makes multi-interface shoe mics, like my favorite ECM-W1M, which are perfect for most people and provide some very nifty features. Finally, if you really want a "cinematic" look in 24, you probably want to set the shutter at 1/50th to get a slight amount of motion blur and the aperture at F4 or a bit higher at longer focal lengths. Then you want ISO 400 most likely. Net-net, you'd want a ND filter if you're going to get creative outside, or lights if you'll be shooting inside.
Thanks for the omnibus comment(s). I've mentioned the "70% for white skin, 100% for highlights" so often in the past, I gave it a rest here. Yes, always expose for skin, let the rest fall where it may, or try to adjust the brightness/shadow settings (which Sony doesn't provide, others do). Really? I think Rode's Filmmaker is the affordable wireless kit. I think that Sony mic is a toy, has very limited range and low quality in comparison. Finally, I challenge you to see the difference between 1/50 and 1/60 shutter. Did RUclips's comment engine cut you off?
YT does have a way to shorten my comments. When editing my comment I often hit the delete selection by accident. I'm more careful now, so RUclips will have to figure something else out! I really had nothing to say but didn't want you to think I don't care anymore ;)
Takes sharp pictures but extremely fragile lens due to cheap plastic internal zoom mechanism. One bump to the lens or drop and the camera is useless. Not acceptable at this price.
@@MaartenHeilbron Reading between the lines it looks like someone just lost credibility and is being paid to promote Sony..No, I was not careless at all, unlike you I am a real life user, not a paid RUclips promo..The lens barrel mechanism has less durability than a $50 point and shoot, that is a fact.
Thank you Maarten! I got this camera to shoot dance tutorials in my studio and am having a really hard time making the footage not look grainy. I would love to hire you for a consult if you think you could help me sort it out. If this something you'd be interested in please email me at nika@nkstudiosbingen.com /// in the meantime I am going to try these setting you suggest and keep researching!
I would recommend that you try to get everyone on approximately the same focal plane and that you use a wider aperture so that you have a larger depth of field.
Thanks for your suggestion, but with over a million views in 2023, you are the first person to raise this issue. Math says I'm not likely to change. On the other hand, youtube has settings to play videos both slowly and quickly.

@@MaartenHeilbron Do you have tutorial how to set up RX10 for photography? Thanks
@@alannguyen2010 I do not. Have your tried the first pages of the manual? It's pretty simple.
@@MaartenHeilbron This camera recording time up to 29m? helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1720/v1/en/contents/TP0001584462.html
How does highlight mode work? Another great video.
It sets the exposure based on the brightest object in the frame, so that nothing is overexposed. Thanks for your kind words.
Hallo thanks for this video. By the video setzings on my RX10M4 i dont have 24p100m or 24p 50m.....just 25....
I have no idea how that might happen.
I admire your honesty
Love your advanced options. One question, is the image stabilization for video shooting compromised when shooting in 4K as compared to shooting in FHD?
Thanks for your kind words, always nice to see your avatar. I didn't think so, I'm pretty sure it's the same sensor area. In any event, in camera stabilization is good for stills, but is rarely effective for video.
Maarten Heilbron I see. Thank you for your considered reply to my query.
always happy to help
Of course it is compromised! With 4K you cannot choose anything but standard stab, which
I believe is the optical. When shooting 1080p you can use electronic stab on top of the optical. Shooting 4K without a gimbal is a mission next to impossible
Can you suggest a good wireless mic for this camera?
I use the Rodelink wireless kit - bhpho.to/2BHA7gT - as detailed here: ruclips.net/video/WqHkXOiLSUU/видео.html. I can also suggest the Saramonic - bhpho.to/2FdLC4K - a two mic kit I reviewed here: ruclips.net/video/-NBUeGGjG1g/видео.html
How can you do a time lapse on this camera? It doesnt have any app? I need help
Maybe with an external intervalometer. There is no built in or downloadable time-lapse function.
thanks Martin...great video. looking forward to more on this camera.
I appreciate the kind words - there's more here: ruclips.net/video/YGqeezyuifg/видео.html. Or is there something else you're looking for?
Can we able to shoot with 4K, 24p in slog 2?
Yes. Using picture profiles isn't limited to any specific video settings.
Thanks heaps, will help a lot getting better quality surf footage!
Glad to help! Thanks for commenting with your kind words.
Love the advance tip thanks. Love the video head as well can you tell me the model number of the video head?
Thanks, always nice to know that my videos are helpful. In this video I'm using the Manfrotto 504HD head with 546B legs. bhpho.to/2pigNBp. Note that this is the kit provided by RUclips Space in Toronto - but I also own one of these. More about tripods and Manfrotto's newest video head here: ruclips.net/video/tAlLgpRBYz0/видео.html
Hope this helps.
This is great - thanks for making and sharing :)
It's always my pleasure - thanks for the kind words.
Thanks 🙏 for making such good video please do share some thoughts on Sony Rx 10 I have just purchased this camera
Always my pleasure. But, about your question, did I miss something? Did you watch the video?
Thanks for your outstanding tutorials on the Rx10. You saved me and many others hours of frustration. Good luck in the future and God bless.
Always nice to know that viewers appreciate my content, thanks for commenting.
The IV worth upgrading from the III?
There are advantages, but if you ask me, I don't think so.
Thanks Maarten, very helpful indeed
Thanks for your kind words, always appreciated.
Thanks for the video!
Always my pleasure, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Always my pleasure. Ja, ik spreek noch steeds een paar woordjes Nederlands.
*Great thank friend*
Thanks for watching.
what about night outdoor concerts?
Depending on lighting, it should meet your expectations. The zoom range will get you nice and close.
@MaartenHeilbron but no Auto ISO for night time outdoor concerts? I don't understand your settings
You should set the ISO manually depending on the lighting. Otherwise, the camera will continually be making visible adjustments that will be distracting while watching and make editing difficult.
@MaartenHeilbron but at concerts lighting changes throughout the performance. what ISO should it be set on? how do you set up ISO for video?
Of course it does, and in order to record those changes correctly, you'll need manual ISO. I thought you were asking about video, as that's the topic of this post. All of my replies are for video recording.
Thank you!👍
Always my pleasure, thanks for your kind words.
hi, after making vidoes,i can't always open the files
Please provide more details - what's the difference between the times you can and cannot? What software are you using? How are you importing the files to your computer? How are you importing them into your video editing software?
Hi and thanks for the reply,Am new and a beginner, am using Sony rx10mk4 with adobe elements premier 2018,sc,hc memory card 64 gb and my settings is on RAW and JPEG ....but can't view my videos files
Can you view them on the camera? How are you transferring/importing them to Premiere?
I can view them on the cam but not on my laptop...Mac,i import
What format are you using? XAVC-S or AVC-HD?
Great tips :)
Thanks

Thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for the kind words.

Are you using the PAL or NTSC setting? Only NTSC has 30.
@@MaartenHeilbron Where in the menu can I change this, btw thanks for the very fast response, you are just amazing
@@MaartenHeilbron I have found out how, thanks for the information 👌

I appreciate the kind words, but there are not more RX10 IV videos in the plans. Is there something specific you're looking for?
Superb.
Thanks for the kind word, appreciated.
These camera companies should pay you to understand their own products.
I'm happy to do it without payment, and if they paid me they'd want to control my content.
@@MaartenHeilbron Word.
Great video thanks 👍
Basically, at the same price of the Sony AX700 Camcorder -- I got a better video-camera with an excellent stills camera for free with the Sony RX0M4.
Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for the kind words.
Thanks, interestingly, RUclips flagged this reply as spam!
Do you do any videos aimed at beginners. I'm sorry but you are a bit over my head!
I'm sorry, this is as simple as I can make it.
Takes sharp pictures but extremely fragile lens due to cheap plastic internal zoom mechanism. One bump to the lens or drop and the camera is useless. Not acceptable at this price.
So, reading between the lines, you were a little careless and damaged the camera?
If images look grainy, it's often because there's too little light. Let me know how it does with these settings.
Group focus
Question? Comment?
@@MaartenHeilbron hi if we take group photo how to set focus thanks
I would recommend that you try to get everyone on approximately the same focal plane and that you use a wider aperture so that you have a larger depth of field.
Talk slowly!
Thanks for your suggestion, but with over a million views in 2023, you are the first person to raise this issue. Math says I'm not likely to change. On the other hand, youtube has settings to play videos both slowly and quickly.
Nice video! Thanks
I always appreciate hearing from a viewer who found what they were looking for.
