You are the best reviewer on RUclips by a far margin. Just the relevant content, with a dash of subtle humour. Clean editing to deliver the required content in the most efficient use of time. No unnecessary music effects or long Interludes of saying nothing or digressing or wandering off into outer space. It's always a joy to watch your content. Much appreciated.
Most detailed yet comprehensible review of the RC10M4! Though a bit heavy on the Video tech for beginners as myself. Very happy with this Camera and this review! Happy shooting!
I always search for your reviews. I dont know why this isn't the first to come up when searching. Your reviews are very detailed and classy with a bit of subtle humor. Very subtle. I like them. Thanks for your work, kind sir!
I agree about ranking pretty high up in searches. What I wanted to say was your reviews deserve to be at the top. And I just found out that I haven't subscribed to your channel yet. So I did. That was just so criminal of me.
I own a Canon 5D MIII and a 7D MII and bought the Sony RX10 Mark IV just for wildlife photography. I really love this camera and for this price it gets almost the same quality as its big brothers full frame camera's. The burst rate of 24/sec is fantastic and gives you the exact picture you always wanted. By the way.. very good video review you did on the Sony RX10 IV! I strongly recommend this camera.
This is the de facto video for anyone who doesn't naturally have an affinity toward understanding camera set-up/settings. It's a bit much to "take in" on one sitting, but after a few runs through, with camera in hand, it starts to make sense! I hope to use the RX-0 primarily for photographing (sea) birds and this guide will help me put the necessary settings on to the Fn keys with that in mind. Thank you Maarten for a brilliant video! It's bookmarked on my laptop and mobile, for quick access!
There was so much information packed into the 25 minute review that it made my head spin. Details came whizzing by at a rapid rate, making it impossible to absorb everything. That being said, there is a great deal of new info presented. I will try making notes while re-playing the review with my finger near the pause command.
Again a great review from the greatest reviewer ever -always being focused on the positive points of any given camera. Tested it. However, I'll stick to the a6500 because of too many paradoxes from an extentive user POV. Thx Maarten. You're the best!
Outstanding review. I agree with others that you were very thorough. I just bought the Sony RX-10 IV and I'm still learning all the idiosyncrasies. You've given me even more to think about. Nicely done.
This is the most informative review on this camera on youtube todate.....Excellent !.....I have even gone as far as advising other reviewers on this camera to watch yours....Hope I didn't offend anyones feelings.....
Such a detailed review, with honesty, highlighting the good, the bad and the ugly. Hope Sony engineers listen to your genuine complaints about the messy menu fiasco...
I started with my first camera in 1969! I respect your WISDOM & knowledge. Congrats... I saw this review, now only - thanks for your contribution - Excellently presented.
Excellent, thorough, no glitz, just solid. I'd been waffling between the FZ2500 and the RX10 IV. I'm accustomed to the Pana menus, and your thorough treatise of the Sony menu put me off my feed. At 72, I'm too old and grumpy to try to build a new set of muscle memory. Thanks so much.
Great review. I have been using the camera the past 2 weeks and find that it does have great versatility. One area of confusion is in shooting close-ups I was in an aquarium and had challenges figuring out the best configuration to get close shots at different focal lengths. While it is true that the closest focus is at the widest angle setting, this often doesn't work in various settings and did not work at the aquarium. The close focus keeps changing based on the focal length used and did not seem to be very intuitive. Perhaps you can add clarifications on that to your excellent series. The camera is a game changer for sure and I have found it has done a better job on wide angle shots than my canon equipment due to the better area of sharp focus due to the smaller sensor.
I appreciate the kind words, thanks. Pretty sure I mentioned and demonstrated that when fully zoomed in the closest distance is 70cm. However, you're correct, in practice, it's a bit of a challenge to get the focal length right when shooting close.
You can only use the Video mode to do video. If you have the mode dial in S or A you will get a message stating it is invalid in that mode when you push the video button. If you have 4k selected or 120p selected in your video mode setting and go back to photo mode you are stuck in standard steady shot and have to go back and change your video settings to be able to use active or active intelligent stabilization in photo mode. That is a pain in the ass if you are shooting video and stills in the same shoot because you need the advanced stabilization beyond 300 mm.
I'm not sure what setting your camera has that's preventing you from recording video in A or S mode - works fine for me in HD and 4K. I have a long list of complaints I could have added to the rant about the menu and exclusions - the steady shot problem you mention is one.
Thanks for the great video. It qualifies to be an official Sony camera menu how-to than a RX10 review. I learnt a lot of what's going-on in my 6400 and RX100. Have been looking for a lighter option for my 6400 70-400 lens upgrade, this looks like a good option.
Dear old man with fantastic eyes and eyebrows 😊, I did joined your channel and I do believe the Camera manufacturing teams are examining these videos closer than we think, but instead of ranting over manu details and minor defects, can we please raise the bigger more important issues of asking for a solid aps-c sensor, a bigger battry and a uhd ii sd card so Sony can deserve the money this model is priced. Because no enough complaints about this features Sony has rx 10 and rx 100 serious with the same old 1 inche sensor even though the rx 10 serious have a dslr Wight and shape to them still minimal in thier cores !! Please do consider raising the level of demand, I understand that not so many competition are coming even close to what Sony is doing. After all we are almost 2019 and already in a very modern fast developing markets of digital revolution. That a side thank you very much for your extensive content and passionate presentations. Peace
Thank you for the excellent review. I'm deciding between the Mark ii and Mark iv because of the Mark ii's constant 2.8 lens and built in ND filters. I'm both an amateur photographer and videographer. Don't really need to extra zoom and appreciate the slightly lower weight of the Mark ii. Just worried that with all the changes that Sony has come out with the focus, buffer, image and video quality in the Mark iv that it will blow away the Mark ii. Does anyone have a comment?
I appreciate the kind words. The improvements are not dramatic enough to cause me to recommend the IV over the II based on those issues - however, they are all considerations that can't be dismissed. If the extra zoom and the lower weight are factors for you, then that is a perfectly sound decision.
the most underrated camera. Came across one editor didnt mentioned and place this camera in their compact camera choice. instead the lumix version was chosen.
Hat off to you. Best review video I can remember seeing. Been looking to downsize from DSLR... arthritis in my shooting hand...& since I don't shoot like I used too, was checking this out as all-in-one, as well as a6500. Thanks again for your information.
My final question @ least that I can think of. Have you ran into any smearing or noise issues with this camera & if so what is recommended (turning specific settings on or off) in preserving the most detail with this camera?
That will depend on the situation. There are many settings to adjust to compensate for various shooting scenarios, you'll have to experiment to find the best one for your situation, and each situation will be different. I didn't have any smearing or noise issues while I was reviewing.
Another comprehensive, thorough, and well articulated review from the Sony G(ear) Master! If only they were to implement changes to some of the UI inconsistencies and omissions that you identify here and in other reviews. With their huge resources, Sony really should act on your insightful observations. I hope they're listening...
I appreciate the kind words, thanks very much. I hope Sony's listening too. I've actually been writing a longer rant on the same subject, not yet sure if it'll get to video.
How good is the RX 10 4 compared to a Sony camcorder in zooming in and out during video? Is the lens parfocal? In my experience the zoom rocker on a camcorder is much easier to use during zooming in and out or vice versa
My new RX10 IV will be delivered on Tuesday. I tried out the Nikon P1000, and while it did okay with good lighting, it was just too cumbersome to manage. Additionally, focusing on certain subjects proved annoying at times, as it took an inordinate amount of time hunting for proper focus-missed some great shots! But this Sony, while significantly more expensive than the Nikon, or other bridge cameras, seems to hit the sweet spot for me. Gone are the days when carrying a large, heavy camera bag full of camera lenses to accompany my Canon 5D, as my joints and lower back are no longer able to accommodate the extra weight-at least for an all-day hike. And while I’m not expecting to achieve the same incredible detail of the full-frame Canon, my eyesight also isn’t what it used to be. So I think the Sony will be just fine for taking along on our adventures...not to mention, my first grandchild will be born in early October. Another excellent review-well laid out and easy to follow. Oh, and I just subscribed! Thank you again for helping me with my purchase decision! You’re the best!!
Hi Maarten,... will you be doing a video on the best settings for recording video on the rx10m4? I want to use my RX10 MK4 to video some model airplanes in flight and in 1080p im struggling with understanding all the different focus modes / options available as per the help guide. What i want to achieve is to be able to manually turn the lens zoom ring while viewing my subject ( ie a model airplane in flight ) via the viewfinder and maintain focus as i zoom in and out to keep the model in shot. These models move at different speeds in flight so its important to keep them both in frame and in focus. i suppose its kinda similar to a bird in flight so im hoping you can help.
Hello Maarten! How are you? Love your reviews. May I ask which camera would you recommend me between the Sony A6500, the Panasonic G85 and the Fujifilm X-T20? I am having a hard time deciding between these three. I will do 50/50 video/stills. Thanks a lot!
I'm great, thanks for asking, and thanks for your kind words. I'd take the A6500, because of it's extensive feature set, fast focus, picture profiles and the ability to use just about any lens I want.
As always, a beautiful, very useful and "concentrated" review, as all quality reviews should be! Thank you, Maarten for your large covering of all aspects of the camera usage! Your previous review of RX10 M3 convinced me to buy it, now I upgraded to RX10 M4, and I am not regret it! (Even I have a problem with planeity of the image at 24mm setting in M4). By the way, I feel no improvements in image quality over M3, but the addition of the touch screen, touch focus (and the phase detection) are useful for me. Has the M4 PD AF in video? (I feel no impovement, in low light, at least)
Thanks for the kind words, always nice to know I've provided useful information. Yes, I would agree, there has been little improvement in image quality over the multiple generations of RX100 cameras.
By far the best camera review I have ever watched ! Full of useful information on all the foibles :-) ( But very fast ...so I will have to watch it a couple of more times ! :-) Thank you Maarten :-) )
simply the best review! Just got my mk4 today after my mk2 focus stopped working. So far we love it. If you ever some actions shots for your reviews, make sure to come to Colonel Samuel Smith park to shoot us kiteboarding! Cheers Maarten!
A pleasure to read your kind words. And thanks for the kind invite - I'll keep that in mind. Would you please send me a DM so we can connect via email? My address is in the description.
The Panasonic FZ1000 has the same problem with disabling multiple features when others are enabled, but without ANY explanation offered at all. Oh, and I’d kill for a “My Menu” tab.
I forgot one question to ask. Is there a lot of jitter on average while zooming in while in movie mode? ps: Why can’t Sony have an optional manual zoom implemented in bridge cameras like the Olympus 40-150mm Pro instead of the SLOW electric zoom?
Not sure what you mean by jitter in this context. It zooms smoothly, although not as organically as I'd like. There are two speeds available for the zoom.
Thank you for the detailed reviews. The information is very helpful. I have been shooting with a Canon 70D for a few years and use it with a Sigma 150-500mm lens for wildlife photography. Currently I need a lightweight alternative that is less obtrusive for capturing video and stills to share on social media. I've been considering all of my options: Keep doing what I'm doing with a backache; Buy a bridge camera either this SONY or a LUMIX FZ300; or Buy a mirrorless with a new lens. I like the idea of a bridge camera because they are small and versatile. Do you think this camera or a Lumix can produce adequate results? OR is it better to buy a mirrorless, adapt my current lens and find a shorter (300 mm) micro 4/3?
Dear Maarten, I am an admirer of your reviews, precise and to the point always. Thank you so much for your consistently honest views. Now, I need a help: I like the gear on the basis of your review. However, I am more keen to its predecessor RX10 II because I am more okay with 24-200 mm while 24-600 seems kinda awkward to me. Could you please tell what exactly important features I will be missing in Sony RX10II? BTW, the issues I consider in buying a stuff are [a] fast focusing capabilities, [b] low light performance and noise, and [c] battery life. Thanks in advance for your response.
Thanks for the kind words. You will miss no important features. Sony updated some aspects of picture profiles used for video recording, some focus capabilities and added exposure metering modes. While these improvements make the RX10 IV a better camera, unless you want the lens capabilities, you should be more than satisfied with the RX10 II.
Sure, both of these suggestions would be fine. As long as there's sufficient light, even small cameras (like the P900) with long lenses can be very useful and effective.
Best macro conversion lens attachment for the Sony RX10 M4? Polaroid 250D for $60 or Raynox DCR-5320PRO for $300? ps: Are the Raynox optics that much better?
I honestly have no idea, I have not tried these adapters. I though the macro capabilities were pretty good - have you tried it? Do you really need the adapter?
2:50 "With a diopter that exceeds my prescription, so I can shoot without glasses" - What about *with* glasses? Does the EVF have enough eye relief for that? I find it extremely inconvenient to have to take my glasses off each time I want to shoot. To me, that disqualifies a camera before I hear anything else. So far only a couple of DSLRs I've owned gave me no problems when shooting with glasses. How is the RX10IV in that respect? Can you see the whole EVF screen that way without having to contort your view back and forth?
With glasses I lose a little from one edge or the other - but that will vary based on your prescription, as I say, I have a fairly strong one - and have found many cameras that don't adjust as far as I need.
Oh Maarten, that was an extensive one, as usual, but right now, I really listened to every little aspect because I was strongly considering getting this camera. It would throw me into new costs, definitely. I'm in the process of getting a Sony for my stills photography and the new A7III seemed like a great choice. My two Lumix cameras (FZ2000 & GX8) for video and Sony for stills. I'd do portraits and landscape with a new stills camera and a full frame was on my list for a loooong time. Then, when the real research was done, some aspects of the A7III weren't that fantastic any more (I'm considering getting a used A7RIII because of the 42MP sensor) although the video is great, according to many, better than on the A7RIII. I'd love to be able to go Sony all the way because I just love the edge of it's colors and the feel in the hand. Hey, I'm one of those who don't mind the menus at all... I still enjoy shooting with my A5100. If Sony had a no-limit video on the RX10 IV I'd go for it in a second. An RX10 IV + used A6500, then I could decide later on if I'm to get the A7III or the A7RIII. With the Photokina ahead in September, who knows, Sony might be giving us a A7RIV or a sensor updated A7SIII (but they wouldn't go from 12MP to 42MP, I guess the 24MP is to expect). I admit that this sounds like a GAS because my two Lumix cameras are just as good as when I bought them and they shoot great video, the GX8 being also quite good for stills. But going with one brand is making the whole chain easier to cope with. All from the lenses to the editing, color grading etc, would be smoother. Thanks again for a great video. Oh, and for the other shorter one describing the video settings for the RX IV!
Hi Maarten , thanks for sharing your time and reviews with all of us... Do you think that with this size of sensor can I get usable 40x50cm prints?...As a Ballet shooter many times my Iso will be arround 1600.. a moderate noise is nice for Ballet mood .What do you think ? Thanks and Greatings from Málaga/Spain.
I can't judge your need for quality, but I have an 80x60cm print from a one inch sensor (an older Sony RX100) taken in low light that looks pretty spectacular from here.
Best review I've seen of this camera, thank you. Should I worry that most of what you discussed was over my head? I'm upgrading from a Lumix D70 to this camera, at least that is the plan. I primarily photograph birds (from forest to ocean). In your opinion, is this one of my better choices? Have any equivalent cameras I should be looking at for this purpose? The AF, 600mm lens, slo-mo, weight, and 24fps is what draws me to this all in one camera. Thank you so much for your help.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Don't worry. This is a good choice for birding - the 600mm provides excellent reach, and the other factors increase its usefulness. There is a similar Nikon model, but I haven't had the opportunity to review it.
Always my pleasure. I have a great deal of pleasure in learning about a camera and in producing these videos - but I do appreciate the kind words, thanks.
Maarten, thank you for the video. I recently purchased this camera and make use of it for interior photography using the playmemories app on my iPad. For some reason, sometimes I can control the aperture but other times I can't. Even though the dial is on manual the app seems to allow the adjustments when it decides to do so. Have you come across a similar issue?
I haven't, but maybe I have not experimented enough. In general these remote control apps tend to be slightly flakey - my impression is that Sony's, which has been around for a while is a little more stable than average.
Thank you for your response. So far I have been very well pleased with the camera. Very good sharpness, better than expected dynamic range. The macro capabilities are amazing. The autofocus on fast moving items has been very impressive. All in all , if I didn´t know any better I would not realize this is a one inch sensor unless I began pushing it to its limits. The sentiment is the same with the menu, but once I figured out what I want and assign things to the function buttons I´m good to go. Just like you mentioned on the video this one can do a lot and well they need people like you to improve the interface and make it user friendly.
I agree - there's a lot to like in this package. One of the comments that didn't make it into the final was my reference to a photowalk I attended with Photoshop guru Katrin Eismann - her camera of choice is/was the RX10 III - for all the reasons you mention.
I went out today shooting with it and I´m liking it more and more every time I use it. If anything, I really hope they add back again the play memories app for using the time-lapse function. I have used that quite often with my other Sony cameras and still cannot wrap my ahead around the fact that they didn´t include it or at least an intervalometer for creating time-lapses.
Hi Maarten, I'm about to take a 3 month motorcycle trip to South America. I have a RX100iv, A7Rii and iPhone X. One thing I hate is carrying around tons of lenses and cameras. On a bike, you have no time to fuss and muss with lenses and very little space and time to bring out cameras. When you are going to remote villages -- again, time is limited. I have used all my RX100's often over the years. Used my A7R cameras but lenses like I said have always been an issue since I am always on the move. I am looking at the RX10iv as an alternative to the A7Rii. My biggest fear is low light -- night time or dusk use. What are your thoughts there? I would otherwise take a A7rii with a 35/2.8 and a 55/1.8 and chose each day which to bring out along with RX100v.
While I like everything about the RX10 IV, I would hesitate to recommend it for low light - the A7RII clearly offers better, particularly with those lenses. However, you won't have the 25x zoom, or the versatility that offers.
Thanks for the reply. So the next question is... How would you compare the RX10 IV to the A7Rii (with my lenses in 100-400 ISO situations?). I am hoping for the magic solution -- long lens convenience vs low light and large sensor.
always my pleasure - I'll assume it's not a trick question - clearly a one inch sensor, which is "good enough" (and I have 24x36in prints on my wall to show for it), is not a full frame. Sadly, there are no magic solutions - even if Criss Angel is coming along for the rid.
I went to Mexico and I carried 2 A6000 with 2 primes and 16-70, and the RX10 III. i'd choose each day or night what to bring. I am still on the fence with the RX10 series/ The III sometimes has a hard time focusing past 150mm equivalent. For portraits of people the A6X00 with a prime like the Sigma or Sony E mount are better. I'd consider the A6000 or A6300 to take along with the Sigma 16mm and or just the 30mm. lighter and smaller than the A7Rii. I like the RX10III but I do not love it. It is lighter and cheaper than a zoom to 400 or 600mm and if you go on a trip you may want to photograph wild animals or distant things. I think Sony improved the AF in the IV over the III.
Excellent review. I need a bridge camera because I can't afford both a good 4K camcorder and a good stills camera. Other than the long zoom would the RX10 II (I watched your review) still be considered a good bridge camera or how about the Panasonic FZ2500? The RX10 II and the FZ2500 are the same price in Feb 2019. Thanks for your in depth reviews.
I have this rx10m4 too and it is a great camera, with a very good lens. The only thing I can't find in this RX10M4 is the histogram in the viewfinder. Displaying the histogram on the LCD screen is not a problem, but showing the histogram in the viewfinder apparently does not work, or am I wrong?
Hello Maarten...great review..You really know your stuff guy....but what if i want to set it on auto and squeeze away.? Does the camera decide what the best Iso etc...to shoot at.? Im a novice wildlife shooter and just want to pull my camera out of a saddle bag and get the shot..How is it suited for that.? Thank you..
It's perfect for that. In P mode with AutoISO, it seems to perform as well as any camera I've seen. You still have darkness/brightness control with the EV setting, and you can adjust the meter for specific lighting situations. Otherwise, good to go.
Thank you Maarten..Theres going to be a RX10 1v under our Xmas tree for the family this year..Well ok...mostly for dad....Tks again and an early Merry Xmas.
Love your channel! I'm planning on going to Israel, and I was wanting your opinion if i should get the rx 2, rx3 or rx4. Also I know almost nothing about photography. Thanks for your help.
Hi , Thanks for the review. Years and months after how do you compare this camera with other rivals in the same 1"-20MP Sensor - Bridge/Superzoom? Can you make a review comparing features, video and stills quality for: - Canon Powershot G3 X (it's a mark II is coming?) - Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 mark II / Leica V-Lux 5 - Panasonic Lumix FZ2000/2500 (3000/3500 soon?) - Sony RX10 Mark IV (Mark V soon?) Do you know if other companies like Nikon will upgrade their offer with cameras in the same range? Like a Nikon Coolpix CX (1" sensor), or a coolpix B800 CX sensor? Other companies see to have give up for this segment : Fuji, Pentax, Olympus... Thanks.
Thanks for the kind words. I believe this is the best of the bunch, I have no advance information about upcoming models, and I can't comment on cameras I have not review.
Excellent review, thank you indeed. I just bought this camera and I also find the various menu options poorly organized. I do have a question related to your comment on "Sony supporting shutter speed lower than the frame rate" (in your video at 17 min 51 sec). How do you get this feature on the camera menus ? Thank you for your help. Please, excuse my poor English, I am French ...
I think it's a little pricey, but I feel that the overall package is a good choice. I can't help you decide whether you want a camera now or in a year.
great review as always maartini. i am non professional. i am choosing a camera mainly for stills. i shoot landscape, and birds wildlife also. use it mainly for travel. i had difficulty in choosing between a 6500 and fuji Xt2. also other concern is bird photography where i would require altest more than 400mm fl. here the large telephoto interchangeable lenses become heavy and costly. what should i do. should i go for RX10 4 for birds and a6500/xt2 for other things. your advice will be greatly appreciated
Thanks for the kind words. The value of the RX10 IV is clearly in the lens - which is one of the best size/weight/price ratios for a long lens in the market. I'm not sure why you would not consider it for travel as well? I think it's an extremely versatile and capable camera. Not that I wouldn't also recommend either or both the A6500 and the X-T2 - but adding lenses to those will increase the price and weight dramatically.
Thank you +Maarten Heilbron, another excellent review. Now that you have had a chance to use and review this camera how do you feel it stacks up against the Panasonic FZ2000/2500 for still photography? I don't have any use for the video features of either camera.
Thanks kindly, appreciated. There's barely any need to consider - the RX10 IV, from the sensor to the lens is a superior camera - although I do love some of Panasonic's technology like post focus, they're poorly served on the FZ series.
Again thank you. I too like the post-focus as well as the 3 built-in ND filters but it sounds like it may be time to move on. Perhaps I will wait until next year and see if Panasonic makes some improvements to compete with the Sony. My dream would be a Fuji competitor with the RX10 IV. I would love to have the film simulation modes in camera.
Thank you but I am looking for a bridge camera. I have a D750 and 200-500mm now but the gear is just too heavy to carry for me anymore. The m4/3 cameras and lenses are lighter but still pretty heavy and bulky for me.
I enjoyed watching your detailed review. Given its versatility, range and beautiful lens, and the bang for the buck, I was considering purchasing this particular camera for bird and general photography. However, after examination I feel it might be a bit too complicated for taste - though I’d probably be able to get used to that, as you mentioned in another reply you can adjust many of the settings once and leave them alone. You also mentioned in a further reply that it's in need of an update as its getting old. That kind of puts me off a bit. I’d buy the thing and then Sony would likely release a newer version. Another on my list was the Panasonic G9, but that’s getting on as well, though the M4/3 range seems to have the best range of lenses at relatively affordable prices. The Sony a6600 was another, but the lens range on offer is fairly limited. Fuji seems a bit expensive and according to Ken Rockwell their cameras are mainly good for people shots. I don’t really believe that but its just worth a mention. Olympus is good, but there’s no guarantee it’ll be operating in the long term or updating their technology as the company was taken over by JIP. I like the Nikons but the telephoto lenses are very expensive. It seems to me that to get a sports capable camera that takes good quality pictures (that's important to me as I'd like to printmy best shots) prices start at $2000AUD and I can live with that, but when it’s getting up to 3-4k things are way out of my price range and I couldn’t in good conscience spend that on a rig. As a non-professional I just can’t justify it. I know I’m suffering from information overload, curse the internet. All these things considered I still like the RX10. Sorry for the long rant. Any suggestions - for a camera that is?
The fact that it's dated doesn't mean that it's any less capable than when it was new - it just seems time for Sony to include some of the features they've included in other recent models. As for lenses - there is no better mirrorless selection, from Sony and from third parties - than those available for the e-mount (like the A6600). After reading all of your thoughts - and I agree that information overload is a problem, particularly when not all the impressions you have are valid - but if it's time to make a decision, the RX10-IV remains an excellent choice until Sony releases an update, and I have no predictions for that.
I have a few questions: 01) Can it be used while supplying power through USB?02) Can it use an external monitor for viewing images, video?03) How does the flash perform?04) Do you know of any useable time lapse remotes?Thank you, Kevin
Hi Maarten I have just watched this review with the idea of possibly purchasing this camera but having watched it I think you have saved me from making an expensive mistake, ie it's not for me. You ask why we can't have unlimited video recording instead of a 30 minute limit, well in the UK this is purely because if Sony give the camera unlimited recording time it attracts a higher level of import duty because it is considered a video camcorder not a camera. Best wishes Vic.
I'm pretty sure it's an EU duty, although was never sure what it was protecting. Now that you're out of the EU though??? And I'm in Canada - why do we suffer from he same limitations?
Hi, you wouldn't have a Minolta 80-200mm f2.8 high speed lens in excellent working condition laying around some place that you would sell or know of someone you trust looking to sell ?
@@MaartenHeilbron Finally I found and purchased a Minolta 80-200mm f2.8 lens that is almost in new condition to replace my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens.......NO, I am not planning to mount this lens on a Sony RX10/4, very funny, smile .....I Wish Nikon's d750 had a EVF, not crazy about Nikon's new Z series
I tend to leave the DRO on in its default settings, and select HDR when I see that the dynamic range is more than DRO can handle. I rarely use AutoHDR - preferring to dial in the minimal setting that brings out the shadow detail I want. At the extremes the HDR looks, well, extreme.
Maybe, it depends on the situations and your expertise. If you'd like to zoom into the distance on a safari or similar situation, the RX10 (III or IV) is the better choice.
i am a beginner want to get into photography and video to blogging to making videos when i go hiking traveling etc.... i am a beginner i had just got the sony a 6300 with the g lens 18-108mm i am thinking of returning it and getting the sony rx10 Iv i think i can learn more of that or you think i should stick with the sony a 6300 i heard overheating is bad
Hi, I bought a Gobe variable ND filter for this camera and it affects the picture quality very badly, especially at the zoom end; I cannot find if there is a recognised circular ND filter that I should try instead. I tried the compatibility page on the Sony site but couldnt find any unless I missed something. Has anyone else had any better success? Thanks
Great review. I currently own a Canon 6D and a couple of lenses. I sold my 24-70 f2.8 for a longer 24-105 f4 (I preferred the speed of the 24-70 though). I also have the cheap 50mm f1.8, which gets great results....sometimes. Anyway, I not a professional photographer, but have done a few weddings and some mountain bike shoots, but I mainly use the camera for holidays and family. I'm getting fed up lugging the 6D and the rest of the gear about and thought that the RX10 iv may be the answer. My biggest question is the quality of the images indoors. Most sample images I've found are of wildlife with a long focal length. I really like the idea of the face detect and eye focus, as when taking photos of my child, I always struggle with focusing as they seem to move about so quickly. I suppose the real question is, would I be 'downgrading' by getting an RX10 iv form my 6 year old Canon 6D? I know the image quality of the 6D paired with Canon's L glass is going to be superior to the Sony, but I would think you would be getting a lot more 'keepers' with the Sony. Also, I like the idea of not having to change lenses. I've seen a few reviews of the Sony that say a nice shallow depth of field is achievable, you just have to work a little harder than you would with a full frame camera. Any thoughts? Thanks Craig
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. I have the 24-105 - that is a great lens. I''d get the RX10iv and see how it works out for you - I think you'll be pleased. It will do the kinds of things that you're expecting. Of course, it is a downgrade in sensor size (but not resolution) and that is a compromise you'll have to determine in practice using your judgement. Yes, a shallow depth of field is achievable, no, it's not that difficult, particularly as the focal length goes over 100.
@@MaartenHeilbron thanks for the reply. I can't afford to keep the 6D and lenses and also buy the RX10, I guess I was hoping for an all-in-one solution. As long as the RX10 iv takes still images indoors without too much noise, I guess it will be OK. The smaller sensor doesn't really bother me too much, as the 1 inch sensor on the new DJI Mavic Pro is amazing, and I'm guessing the Sony's sensor is better again. Is there a mark 5 on the way?
Understood. The Sony rumours web site is the best place to check for upcoming releases - but they're not totally reliable. I'm pretty sure that all one inch sensors come from the same source (Sony).
Good info! Just upgraded to the RX10 lV. Looking forward to the improved auto focus and frame rates. I have Lightroom for when I shoot Raw, but when I want to upload a zoo album on Facebook, where Raw files are too large, I generally use JPEG extra fine. So in creative mode, what would be the optimal settings for wildlife as far as sharpness, contrast, and saturation are concerned? And would Standard be better than Neutral or Vivid?
Thanks for the kind words. I'd probably use Vivid - but in general, these are personal taste - it's like choosing a film type back in the day. Choose the one that suits you - and make the adjustments to the settings as needed.
Another fantastic review, Maarten. Thanks. I am considering the RX10 model IV to supplement my RX100v. I want a fixed lens camera with the RX10 lens range.
Thank you for the detailed and informative and honest reviews you have created for this camera. I need to get more zoom and with the A7r2 my only option that is affordable is the 70-300. I have taken some test shots at a store and now I am seriously considering trading in the r2 and lenses. My spare batteries and flash equipment and filters all will still be of use and I can still use capture 1 for the raw conversions if my older cs6 ACR won’t open the nearer raw which I suspect will happen. I tried the full zoom with clear vision zoom and that is very usable as well , you do not really cover that feature. I was going to trade everything and buy the NX80 camcorder which is the same software, sensor, focusing, but having watched your reviews I think not now
That sir, is an excellent question. Luckily I anticipated it and have prepared a video just for you: ruclips.net/video/aLlEMo3dgu8/видео.html. In a sentence - one inch is the diameter of the cathode ray tube which was the origin of this size and this is the largest 4x3 dimension sensor to fit inside that circle.
Great video! Thanks a ton! I'm focusing on photography only. I'd like to compare it's image quality with DSLR cameras in terms of printing quality. I don't need to do billboard poster with this camera. Maximum what size paper can be printed retaining sharpness? A4? May be I couldn't express exactly what I'm looking for but I think you understood what my query is. Will be waiting for your kind response please. Stay fine.
The one-inch sensor in this (and many other cameras) does not equal the quality of a larger (APS-C or full frame) sensor. That said, I have a large print 90x60cm taken in low light with an earlier version of this camera that looks excellent.
Dear@@MaartenHeilbron , many thanks for your valuable comment. On your experienced comment, I'm deciding to buy this camera. It'll cover my retirement very well! Especial thanks dear Maarten, God bless you!
I'm using a card that's not recording smooth 4k video, it's the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC Memory Card, 170mb/s, v30, I, UC, C10. Am I using the wrong card or is something else afoot? Which card(s) did you use for your test? Thank you. UPDATE: I've just discovered it was the inability of an older iMac to play 4K. It transfers and plays just fine on a Mac Pro.
Love this camera and Maarten's review of it. For those who haven't applied the latest firmware head for Sony's site and grab it. Now with Animal eye autofocus!
I have dsc 200v camera old one but i like it and now theres no fucos image i dont know what went wrong. Can you help? Thanks. It all black image from the screen. Sensor maybe?
I think the confusing features and issues you outlined are the fault of Sony management, not the engineers per say. Sony engineering seems to be tasked mainly with creating new designs and features, not fixing old nuisances and conflicts. Given a limited amount of time and budget, they move on to something new while unknowingly leaving old annoyances in their wake. Even simple items such as poor menu design seem to get carried over. Taken to the extreme, carryovers can multiply as new issues are added over time.
I stand corrected, my apologies to Sony engineers. I'm moving the black cloud over to Sony management, particularly product managers and their superiors.
Maarteen, I have another question on your review regarding the slow-motion movie and "the best value in the 120 frame HD mode". How can you slow it down ? On your laptop, with your media player ? Thank again for your help. Yves
It's always a pleasure to read a note from a viewer who understands and appreciates my videos, and my approach to reviews. Thanks for your kind words.
After months of research and waiting I finally picked up this camera, and this video has been the best guide by far
That's great to hear - thanks for the kind words.
By far the best camera reviews on RUclips. Thank you Maarten.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for your comment and your nice words.
I continue to be amazed at the depth, thoroughness, and usefulness of your reviews. Kudos, sir!
That's very kind of you to say, thanks.
Most detailed yet comprehensible review of the RC10M4! Though a bit heavy on the Video tech for beginners as myself. Very happy with this Camera and this review! Happy shooting!
Thanks, a pleasure to read your kind words.
I always search for your reviews. I dont know why this isn't the first to come up when searching. Your reviews are very detailed and classy with a bit of subtle humor. Very subtle. I like them. Thanks for your work, kind sir!
That's very kind of you to say - I often do rank high in search, but not for all models. I appreciate the note about my subtle sense of humour.
I agree about ranking pretty high up in searches. What I wanted to say was your reviews deserve to be at the top. And I just found out that I haven't subscribed to your channel yet. So I did. That was just so criminal of me.
Always happy to have a new subscriber, whatever the circumstances, thank you for the kind words.
Always nice to hear from someone with first-hand experience. Thanks for your kind words.
It's always nice to hear that my videos are helpful in finding the right approach to using your camera - thanks, I appreciate your kind words.
There was so much information packed into the 25 minute review that it made my head spin. Details came whizzing by at a rapid rate, making it impossible to absorb everything. That being said, there is a great deal of new info presented. I will try making notes while re-playing the review with my finger near the pause command.
That’s very kind of you to say - and I’m glad to hear that you found a solution to slow me down.
Again a great review from the greatest reviewer ever -always being focused on the positive points of any given camera. Tested it. However, I'll stick to the a6500 because of too many paradoxes from an extentive user POV.
Thx Maarten. You're the best!
Very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Outstanding review. I agree with others that you were very thorough. I just bought the Sony RX-10 IV and I'm still learning all the idiosyncrasies. You've given me even more to think about. Nicely done.
A pleasure to read your kind words - thanks for taking the time to comment.
This is the most informative review on this camera on youtube todate.....Excellent !.....I have even gone as far as advising other reviewers on this camera to watch yours....Hope I didn't offend anyones feelings.....
How kind of you to say, thanks for commenting. Who's feelings would be offended?
other reviewers....
You are very kind to be so considerate.
Such a detailed review, with honesty, highlighting the good, the bad and the ugly. Hope Sony engineers listen to your genuine complaints about the messy menu fiasco...
Always nice to read your comments, thanks. I was thinking of doing a video just on all my menu complaints and how I would reorganize ...
Maarten Heilbron that's a good idea.
I'll work on it.
I started with my first camera in 1969! I respect your WISDOM & knowledge. Congrats... I saw this review, now only - thanks for your contribution - Excellently presented.
Awesome! Thank you!
Maarten does it again with an amazingly technical review. Dont think they get any better. Look forward to seeing more.
Thanks, I value your opinions, always nice to read your kind words.
Thanks. Sorry about the lack of glitz. Mmmmm - waffles!!!
one of the best review about RX10 IV. I got mine last year and I still learning how to use, thank you so much.
Always happy to hear that my videos are appreciated, thanks for the kind words.
Thank you Maarten. As always, an excellent presentation. Your reviews are my go to - just so much better than anything else out there.
Very kind of you to say - I appreciate your comments.
That's so true!
I just ordered this camera as I was tired of lugging my DSLR camera and lenses around. Can’t wait to play with it.
That makes sense, hopefully it meets your expectations.
Thanks for the great video. It qualifies to be an official Sony camera menu how-to than a RX10 review. I learnt a lot of what's going-on in my 6400 and RX100. Have been looking for a lighter option for my 6400 70-400 lens upgrade, this looks like a good option.
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated.
Peace
Thank you for your kind words. These are reasonable requests, and it would be great if Sony listened to them.
Maarten Heilbron Thank you!
Always my pleasure.
the most underrated camera. Came across one editor didnt mentioned and place this camera in their compact camera choice. instead the lumix version was chosen.
Under-rated, but also due for an update.
Very thorough video with function explanations others have missed.
I appreciate your kind words, thank you.
Hat off to you. Best review video I can remember seeing. Been looking to downsize from DSLR... arthritis in my shooting hand...& since I don't shoot like I used too, was checking this out as all-in-one, as well as a6500. Thanks again for your information.
Always nice to know I've been able to provide useful information. Thanks for your kind comment.
Definitely the best presented and detailed overview I've seen, from a genuinely nice guy too, easy sub from me, cheers!
Glad you enjoyed the video, always nice to hear from a new subscriber. I'm sure you'll like this video: ruclips.net/video/kCG0QBRFEpE/видео.html
Watching in advance of purchasing. I always watch your reviews before buying. Very helpful
Thanks, I always appreciate hearing that my videos are useful.
Not as good. It's definitely not parfocal (you can actually see that in a couple of scenes where I zoom).
Wow! VERY impressive review deserving „full depth“ more‘n many others. You really took yr time 4 this one, great helpful work, ty very much!
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
I"m glad that my review was helpful, I'm sure you'll enjoy the camera. Thanks for your kind words and subscription, both are appreciated.
Hi Maarten,... will you be doing a video on the best settings for recording video on the rx10m4?
I want to use my RX10 MK4 to video some model airplanes in flight and in 1080p
im struggling with understanding all the different focus modes / options available as per the help guide.
Yes, I have a few other projects to complete ahead of it, but within the next month or so.
Always nice to know that my videos are appreciated. I'm sorry they're fast.
simply the best review!
I'm not sure how ending innocent lives would help.
Best review for this camera so far, great work!!
Very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
In my opinion, this camera would provide excellent results for social media post (and more). I have not reviewed the FZ300.
Thank you for illustrating your assertions with examples. It speeds up understanding (mine especially). You are a great teacher!
Thanks for your kind words - the lack of examples by reviewers who just sit and spin the camera like a rubic's cube is why I started doing this.
Excellent detailed review. Got the camera few days ago and really like it. Great IQ and versatility.
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks.
Could you recommend a camera for bird photography? Superzoom like this camera or similar Nikon P900 or dslr with 500 or 600mm lens?
Sure, both of these suggestions would be fine. As long as there's sufficient light, even small cameras (like the P900) with long lenses can be very useful and effective.
I have watched this video like 3 times because I like it so much. Narration 10Comments 10Wisdom 10Great job.
Wow! That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thanks, Maarten.
always my pleasure
I appreciate your kind words, thanks. I agree - it's a difficult and crowded marketplace, making a decision has become very complex.
Just got this camera this month and this video has been so helpful! Thank you!
You're so welcome! Thanks for taking the time to post your kind words.
Thank you for the detailed information! I learnt more here than elsewhere!
Always nice to know that my viewers appreciate my videos enough to post kind comments.
This is the review I want, subscribed. Thank you.
That's very kind. I appreicate your comments and your subscription.
Has IQ & Dynamic Range in reality improved much from the original RX10?
I didn't review the original RX10.
Hi Maarten,
Quick question: What is the buffer clear time for a full buffer on JPG extra fine? Thanks!
ruclips.net/video/YGqeezyuifg/видео.htmlm50s
Maarten Heilbron thank you, I missed that
No worries, the videos are so jam-packed, it's hard to catch everything. Glad I had the answer.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you so much! :-)
Always happy to help.
Great review as always! Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
Always my pleasure. I have a great deal of pleasure in learning about a camera and in producing these videos - but I do appreciate the kind words, thanks.
Having put a few reviews together myself I fully appreciate the work that you put into your videos. By far the most comprehensive I have seen.
That's very kind, I thank you for taking the time to comment.
I have no idea why it's not included. I've seen comments online to suggest they may be adding it in a firmware update.
I am planning to go for the Panasonic FZ2500. Do you think its a good buy? My main concern is that the image should be in focus.
I have not had the opportunity to shoot with the FZ2500. Panasonic's focus features are extensive and should provide good focus for your images.
Thanks so much for adding these observations. Always nice to hear real-world experiences.
did they make the quality of the 480p and 960p slowmo better?
Not that I noticed. (It’s the same)
Excellent review.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I'd take the RX10.
What an excellent compact review mentioning all speciallities of that machine! Thank you, very inspiring!
It was a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for commenting.
It should, it's the third option in the carousel of available screens. Check your DISP options in the menu.
Thank you Maarten..Theres going to be a RX10 1v under our Xmas tree for the family this year..Well ok...mostly for dad....Tks again and an early Merry Xmas.
always happy to help.
Love your channel! I'm planning on going to Israel, and I was wanting your opinion if i should get the rx 2, rx3 or rx4. Also I know almost nothing about photography. Thanks for your help.
Get the RX3 or RX4, both are easy to use and provide excellent results. Thanks for your kind words.
Hi ,
Thanks for the review.
Years and months after how do you compare this camera with other rivals in the same 1"-20MP Sensor - Bridge/Superzoom?
Can you make a review comparing features, video and stills quality for:
- Canon Powershot G3 X (it's a mark II is coming?)
- Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 mark II / Leica V-Lux 5
- Panasonic Lumix FZ2000/2500 (3000/3500 soon?)
- Sony RX10 Mark IV (Mark V soon?)
Do you know if other companies like Nikon will upgrade their offer with cameras in the same range?
I enjoyed reading your kind words. It's not a menu option, just slow the shutter while you're in video mode.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you, I just tried, it works !!!
@@yvesedelin723 Glad I could help.
Can the 1 inch sensor, lens, & phase detection justify the $1700 price point in your opinion or should I wait for the M5 in a year?
I think it's a little pricey, but I feel that the overall package is a good choice. I can't help you decide whether you want a camera now or in a year.
What was an deal price for this camera? I was thinking $1400
I honestly have no idea what prices are where you are.
great review as always maartini. i am non professional. i am choosing a camera mainly for stills. i shoot landscape, and birds wildlife also. use it mainly for travel. i had difficulty in choosing between a 6500 and fuji Xt2. also other concern is bird photography where i would require altest more than 400mm fl. here the large telephoto interchangeable lenses become heavy and costly. what should i do. should i go for RX10 4 for birds and a6500/xt2 for other things. your advice will be greatly appreciated
Should look at the Nikon p1000
All those new releases have bumped this down the editorial lineup calendar a ways.
You could consider one of Panasonics micro four-thirds models, with a larger sensor they provide better quality.
Thank you but I am looking for a bridge camera. I have a D750 and 200-500mm now but the gear is just too heavy to carry for me anymore. The m4/3 cameras and lenses are lighter but still pretty heavy and bulky for me.
The RX10 series is technically considered a bridge camera ...
A few answers: 1) Yes 2) Yes 3) The lens sometimes gets in the way - if flash is important, get an external unit. 4) Sorry, no - maybe Google knows.
Maarten Heilbron thank you ✨✨✨🙏
always happy to help
Maarten,
You do fantastic reviews.
Thank you very much for your kind words, appreciated.
I've sent the team off to search the storeroom. Will keep you posted. Am curious to understand how you plan to mount it on the RX10 IV.
@@howardkahn4330 Glad to hear your search has yielded results. If the D750 had EVF, it wouldn't be a DSLR.
Is the RX10 M4 highest quality JPEG setting comparable in detail to Raw files?
In detail, yes, it is the same resolution. RAW files advantages fall in other areas, like flexibility of post processing.
Question---When do you use the camera's HDR or DOR or Both systems?
I tend to leave the DRO on in its default settings, and select HDR when I see that the dynamic range is more than DRO can handle. I rarely use AutoHDR - preferring to dial in the minimal setting that brings out the shadow detail I want. At the extremes the HDR looks, well, extreme.
thanks, i always left the dro/hdr on auto, but i will try it your way ....
always worth experimenting with the settings to see
hello sir I have a question you think this camera would be better than the Sony a 6300 with 18-105 mm glens for videos and photos?
Maybe, it depends on the situations and your expertise. If you'd like to zoom into the distance on a safari or similar situation, the RX10 (III or IV) is the better choice.
i am a beginner want to get into photography and video to blogging to making videos when i go hiking traveling etc.... i am a beginner i had just got the sony a 6300 with the g lens 18-108mm i am thinking of returning it and getting the sony rx10 Iv i think i can learn more of that or you think i should stick with the sony a 6300 i heard overheating is bad
Unless you need the long zoom, I would prefer the A6300. Do the firmware update and set the overheating to high and you won't have many problems.
Thanks
Try ND filters from brands like Hoya, Lee, B+W - they provide good quality glass.
Thanks, I hoped it would be as simple as that, rather than the quality of the lens itself...which I seriously doubted. Its only money!

So detailed, thanks for your efforts!
How kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thanks for your comprehensive review. Do you have plan to review lumix fz2500?
I appreciate the kind words, thanks! I don't plan to review the FZ2500.
Will be renting one of these in May. This review was extremely useful. Thank you!
That's great to hear, I'm always pleased to know my videos are helpful.
I'm awaiting delivery of mine. I can't wait!
Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm.
Thanks
Craig
Okay, thanks! I'll try it at the zoo tomorrow.
Interested to hear how you like it - or which other you prefer.
Another fantastic review, Maarten. Thanks. I am considering the RX10 model IV to supplement my RX100v. I want a fixed lens camera with the RX10 lens range.
Thanks for your kind words, sounds like you found your next camera.
I was going to trade everything and buy the NX80 camcorder which is the same software, sensor, focusing, but having watched your reviews I think not now
I appreciate the kind words, always nice to know I've been able to provide useful information.
Good to see you Maarten.
Thanks for dropping by.
why do they call the sensor 1 inch if the diagonal of the sensor is not 1 inch ?
That sir, is an excellent question. Luckily I anticipated it and have prepared a video just for you: ruclips.net/video/aLlEMo3dgu8/видео.html. In a sentence - one inch is the diameter of the cathode ray tube which was the origin of this size and this is the largest 4x3 dimension sensor to fit inside that circle.
Thank you! saw it. very interesting an done well video!
I appreciate the kind words, thanks
Best review. Everything well put. Great job.
Thank you, I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it.

Glad to hear that''s resolved. Your card is plenty fine for the RX10 IV's maximum video writing speed.
Love this camera and Maarten's review of it. For those who haven't applied the latest firmware head for Sony's site and grab it. Now with Animal eye autofocus!

I have no experience with the camera, so have no suggestions. If the lens cap is off, try using the P exposure mode?
Yves
If you've made a 120 frame recording you can slow it to 25% for 30 frame video, or 20% for 24. Yes, that's done in your video editing software.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you Maarteen.
