2GR-FE is a rock solid engine. But if an oil leak develops in the timing chain cover, the whole engine must be dropped to fix it, according the Lexus dealer service. My engine has a timing chain cover "seep" and I'm living with it.
Remember, it's only neglect/silliness if you have mechanical knowledge and know better, but if you have zero knowledge of a car engine, and some really are oblivious about things that are mere commonsense to others, regarding car engines and general maintenance of engines, then it's merely unfortunate, and expensive, for them....
An engine that got that hot is ready for the aluminum scrap pile. I could be wrong, but I think my old 2000 Ford Expedition will shut you down if you try to drive with the engine severely overheating. It might shut off half the cylinders first. I'm surprised that the 24 year old water pump still isn't leaking. But back then, Ford was still making SUVs with the best materials they could find. These days it is a, 'just make it through the warranty', philosophy. Many manufactured goods are now like that.
This happened to my Tacoma but was lucky enough to see the low coolant before it overheated, I think mine was caused by adding the green coolant to the OEM pink coolant compromising the water pump gasket.
Great video, as always! Its just a shame that these engines cannot be re-bored . Once you score the cylinder bore for any reason, Toyota says the engine is scrap.
Yes because the tolerances are very tight. But that doesn't mean it the way you think. Get a new or OE reman short block. Still expensive but you don't have to rebuy all the harness and accessories and upper pan and such things. It will include the correct piston and ringsets
I always tell my customer to occasionally keep an eye on the cooing system temperature gauge when driving. If over the halfway mark, come in for me to take a look. So far replaced radiators, thermostats, hoses or water pumps but so far, knock on wood, no engines yet.
Those front wheel drive cars are designed to be assembled as quickly as possible on an assembly line, so it's easier to install a complete assembly with the subframe. But, for the repair 😳😮🤯. Thanks for the video tour.
Yes that's common. My hair is standing the same way to see an aisin toyo oe part in that way. Maybe it was made in the Kentucky plant? Or somewhere North America vs Japan
Just a simple comment here on that engine stand design. Dangerous! That is too much engine for that unstable 3 point design. All in all good information as always!
All he has to do is look at the temperature gauge. Almost every car has one. Just think, this car owner is going through all this to save the cost of a tow, some inconvenience & an Uber ride.
@@DIYDaveOK Let's see, that engine was used in Camrys, Avalons, Tacomas, Venzas, ES350s, RX350s and maybe some other models. Literally millions of cars that are known for their reliability. It is a great engine.
Considering it's a 17,5 value, not likely. 2k used engine maybe 3-4k more for install even with subframe drop. (the easier way for Toyo vs cherry pick from up).
In my time we would have opened the engine; rebored the cylinders; ground the crankshaft; put in new pistons and bearings (and anything else that needed replacement). Engines in those days (1960/70s) were not cheap. Replacing with a 2nd hand engine "may" not be a good idea in my opinion.
There are lots of stories on different channels (and elsewhere) about different problems with the 2GR-FE. If you've seen other problems with them, I expect that lots of us would watch videos from you about them.
Yes, something you don't see everyday an engine replacement like this happening for this specific case. Unfortunately not so bright people that drive their vehicle overheating like that is a common occurrence, all day, everyday and everywhere. How many miles are on that cooked engine?
Sometimes people have the money rather than strand themselves in the highway and take a risk. However these owners were said to top the coolant and just go. They felt 30k it's ok. Not at 8 yrs it's not.
Peter, that engine might be a good candidate for teardown over at "I Do Cars."

You've got a great neighbour/landlord Peter 👌
Thanks for the tour of the Engine House of Terrors, Petr. That level of neglect/silliness is legend.

So informative for lexus and toyota repair

I see the infamous vvti oil supply line is the upgraded metal version here. Have to watch out for that on the older 2Gr's.
Thank you Peter.

Awesome! Thank you for the video.
great video
I just changed the pink coolant and thermostat on my Lexus GS 350AWD! Maybe I should do a waterpump too.
As you can seen, it is a big complex job to change the engine. You don't normally see an overheated Toyota or Lexus
Funny to see Peter's hair standing up at the beginning of the video.

My son has the 2GR In his Tacoma, I'll tell him to look out.
2GR-FE is a good engine if you don't absurdly abuse it by letting it overheat
2GR-FE is a really good engine if you have the sense not to abuse it by driving it overheated. Crazy.

Petr, Did you drive over to shoot this video or just walk? 😉
10-12 grand?
Compared to $200 for a tow and $50 for an Uber ride home once the car started heating up.

The cooked engine has 37,569 miles.
FWD V6 are a nightmare. I guess idiot lights and gauges are too difficult too understand.
