Thank you Peter. I see old Toyota vehicles from the 70's that look like they are held together with bailing wire and tape still going down the road not smoking or shaking. Amazing for sure.
We're in AZ, nothing but extremely high temps and very little snow unless you travel way north. Down in the valley there are many Toyota truck and cars still going, sometimes I wonder how the heck those old ones are still around.
Peter. So sorry to hear about people not liking your channel. I do appreciate the knowledge that you share. Keep doing what you do. It helps me on possible future repairs.
It's not about people not liking his channel, it's the games youtube is playing and gatekeeping his videos. The algorithm wants him to jump through to have his videos come into subscription boxes are unreasonable. For example last few years the asked partners to make shorts which is completely new to Petr and does not fit his format. How will he even make them to make sense.. near impossible.
Truth be told.. If Pete could buy that car for $900 HE WOULD DO IT SO FAST! fix those minor items himself NO LABOR - and wind up with a CHEAP TOYOTA with 150K.... Hey Peter, you show up on my top feed every time you drop a new video. You have taught me so much about working on Toyotas. I am so grateful to have found your channel over a year ago.
Our shop worked on a 2006 RAV4 in similar shape. It took about 1 year to slowly restore it back to its original condition. The paint was burnt and interior soiled, but mechanically she was about 90% except for leak on the front differential (all wheel drive). We were prepared to repair it when the vehicle fell victim to a hit and run. It was totaled and the owner ended up with a well maintained Toyota Camry.
Nothing wrong with replacing the rotor on just one side if the other side rotor is still within spec. The pads will wear into the old rotor in a thousand miles. You think if a car is in an accident on one side busting a rotor, the bodyshop is going to also replace the rotor on the other side as well?
Real question is how much did they pay for it? If they got it for $1000 or under, with just $3k worth of fixers minus AC, that's a steal and they are ahead of the robbery out there in the market for used prices right now.
I would love to find an early 2000’s RAV4 or any early Toyota at a decent price. Prices for everything is out of control anymore. I’ll even go for a 1988 Chevy Nova (Corolla). Just want simple, mechanical transportation.
great video. I love your channel and I’d like to request that you do a video showing how to change Prius Gen 4 PCV. on Gen3 -it was easy. now not so much and dealer wants $460 to change!
Given the level of neglect and corners cut, I would say this was likey a students vehicle. 3k really isn't a horrible number considering parts and labor. I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but as for the rotors, as long as they aren't warped, glazed or have huge lips on them I think are fine but, they do need to be replaced in pairs.
Except for the coil wiring , normal suspension defects and CV axel, she's ok. The Toyota coil connectors are designed to rub like that if the air box mounts break or sloppy installation. The coil connectors come up at a steep angle so they have to come very close to the bottom of the air box As for the big deal about using plumbing fittings, they are probably as good or better then the engineered to fail Toyota parts Fix the coil connector wires , suspension and axel. put another 100k on her , she's not going into any car show, don't worry about lipstick and mascara This is the biggest problem with make specific, ex dealer mechanics. They really know their stuff for a particular make, but they think cars, regardless of age should have only make specific parts and look like they just came out of the factory
I inherited my father's old Scion xB. I kept it for a couple years and put $4k into it doing most the work myself. I recently sold it for $4,500 and bought a pickup. If I hadn't got the Scion for free it would have been a total waste of money.
i want to know if there’s a tool for connecting electrical wire to coil all the way and seated properly to the plastic lock head. i was relacing spark plug for 2020 4 runner and it was very difficult to connect and seat the electrical connector to coil properly no matter how hard i push in with my finger it will no bulge into place. please help
Clearly, the previous owner or owners just didn’t give a shit about the car. They just ran it and let everything fall apart no maintenance. YES you run not walk away from one like this
I hope your customer got the car for $300 bucks from a relative. Otherwise I don’t know what to tell them. If you give them the full explanation of your assessment they should listen and they should sell this cream puff. But they already seem to be emotionally invested because they want to save the car? There’s better examples of RAV4 car’s out there the repair of this car must have been done by friends of the owner or owners because they or the mice like Soy flavored wire insulation. A handful of mothballs would have kept the mice away. The new owner is young and maybe not very wealthy but if he keeps going with this car he will be poor for a long while.
I agree. I just spent 3 grand for new brakes, fluid, belt, coolant, hoses oil, diff service, and trans service on an 08 4runner with 63k on it. Won't have to touch it for quite a while.
He mostly likely doesn't drive an evil vehicle that drinks dinosaur juice.. he drives an EV something that consumes rainbow sprinkles and unicorn fart fumes. On the other hand, that Rav4 is a good representation of the sorely neglected state out there that he rules over.. so who knows it very well could be his vehicle.. lol.
Since this is a 2004 2AZ-FE the question is does it have the endemic oil burning you get with these engines with extended oil chance intervals? If the engine is good then this is a good candidate for the owner to learn how to do a lot of maintenance. Why would someone replace one rotor??? Who would do one rotor and not replace the brake fluid???! At least the steering rack doesn’t have the typical Toyota leak since that’s a very expensive part. It’s really a shame when a Toyota is so abused. At least the owner can fix it up and it will hopefully give many years of good service. AC is an option. It doesn’t work anymore on my 1999 CRV and I can live without it. Obviously this was owned by an abuser who saved money by not doing maintenance and planned to sell it and then fixed it up just enough to sell it and trick somebody.
It doesn't look like a brand new rotor but a newer newish rotor. The hat is clean but you can see rust on the plate which isn't just a month or two worth. It's possible that the rotor wouldn't come off or the park brake was stuck and removing it damaged it. Maybe a bearing was needed to be changed or something that needed the stuck rotor to be pulled.
Not true at all, many many old cars are still on the road due to good maintenance. I have several 20+yr old cars running great. No reason to buy a new car for 30k if you can buy a camry for 5k and still have it long enough to give to your grandkids.
Peter I'd bet other shops would have a field day with this and charge twice as much. Your ethics are commendable sir. Take care.
That car was owned by a "bleeder." A bleeder is the kind of person who does nothing but drive it, then dumps it right before it falls apart. 😢
Thank you Peter. I see old Toyota vehicles from the 70's that look like they are held together with bailing wire and tape still going down the road not smoking or shaking. Amazing for sure.
Those all rusted out here which is a bummer!
We're in AZ, nothing but extremely high temps and very little snow unless you travel way north. Down in the valley there are many Toyota truck and cars still going, sometimes I wonder how the heck those old ones are still around.

Love the channel. If I had a mentor like him, I might still be turning wrenches for a living.

Great video… a stark reminder that our Toyotas are valuable investments and deserve to be taken care of.
Hey Peter, you show up on my top feed every time you drop a new video. You have taught me so much about working on Toyotas. I am so grateful to have found your channel over a year ago.
This is one for Peter's "Just rolled into the shop" hall of fame. At least it has a few redeeming qualities.
Our shop worked on a 2006 RAV4 in similar shape. It took about 1 year to slowly restore it back to its original condition. Great channel, love the content. I wish you lived in my state I would take all my cars to you. It’s hard to fined a honest mechanic.
Deferred maintenance, pay a little now or a lot later!!
Great video showing all the challenges with this RAV4. Love to hear what the customer is or is not going to do on this one. Keep us posted.
Those wires are hanging on with hopes and dreams 😂
I was going to mention the mismatched wheels were causing ABS/Traction control issues but it’s FWD.
I believe it was run hard and generally wasn't maintained. The eaten wires tell me that it sat around unused for a while.
I absolutely love your videos. You are wonderfully thorough.
Real question is how much did they pay for it? If they got it for $1000 or under, with just $3k worth of fixers minus AC, that's a steal and they are ahead of the robbery out there in the market for used prices right now.
$3000 repair? that's nothing in this crazy market. Totally worth fixing up and then you have a $10k car easy
I still see the potential in this rav4. Fix all the issues over the next year or two and you’ll get another 150k miles out of it.
Low KBB is $1,100. If you can buy it for that price, sure. Seller will probably get $4-5K from an unsuspecting victim.
What would be the reasonable cost Pete, for a detailed inspection, about one hour shop time? Half hour?
I would love to find an early 2000’s RAV4 or any early Toyota at a decent price. Prices for everything is out of control anymore. I’ll even go for a 1988 Chevy Nova (Corolla). Just want simple, mechanical transportation.
Watch out for the ones with the 2.4L oil burning engines.
That poor thing had the crap beaten out of it. I'm a Toyota fan, but even a Toyota can only take so much.
It shows you how much abuse a Toyota can take but still get you there anyway.
We have both a 2003 and a 2004 Rav4. Both are well taken care of and they just keep going and going. They're great cars if people take care of them.
A bunch of young jerks beat the hell out that RAV 4, then sold it to an unsuspecting buyer...
Maybe it was a bunch of middle aged jerks.
great video. I love your channel and I’d like to request that you do a video showing how to change Prius Gen 4 PCV. on Gen3 -it was easy. now not so much and dealer wants $460 to change!
Maintenance by neglect, case study right here.
On the plus side, the car doesn't have much rust! Just like new!
What else can he buy for three grand it’s not rusted .
Nice summary, hopefully this person has the means to fix.

Horrible ! Who would do this to a Toyota ? Hope your RUclips frustrations are resolved Peter.

You calling it a basketcase is the perfect description.
I can't believe it doesn't burn oil though the piston rings.
Maybe the only thing they did was have the oil changed every couple of years.
Some cars you run away from. If you work on that car, you will marry it forever.
That's great 😆
The wheels are mismatched as well. This is probably not worth the $ and the trouble due to the hidden things still to come up.
Probably had odometer rolled back. I've found that on a few cars I've looked at.
For sure on this one....150K and it looks like that and is a 2000 model year? No way.
That car has been neglected!
why are front and rear wheels different?
Toyota Maintenance RUclips Channel!
❤
There is no way this car has only 154k miles!
20 year old vehicle with zero maintenance. Some people drive vehicles until they break. Deferred maintenance destroys vehicles
also…no videos on the gen 4 pcv on youtube!
It's 20 years old with 154k that was never maintained. What'd you expect?
OMG what a disaster, I wouldn't even road test it...
Thx Peter, it was helpful !
So much neglect. Sad...
Petr, This RAV4 has become a RANT4!!
LMAO
RAT4
RAT2 actually (front drive)
Why does the outer part of a rotor get a lip ?
Because the pad does not wear that area
Go on fix it up
A Zero maintenance vehicle which will cost thousands to fix unless he can do most of it himself.
i want to know if there’s a tool for connecting electrical wire to coil all the way and seated properly to the plastic lock head. i was relacing spark plug for 2020 4 runner and it was very difficult to connect and seat the electrical connector to coil properly no matter how hard i push in with my finger it will no bulge into place. please help
Id pay 3 grand to fix that. Because used cars are RIDICULOUS in price anyway 😊
😂😂 2004
Owner abused it and didn't take a good care 😂
Do not buy an abused unloved car even if it’s a Toyota.
Clearly, the previous owner or owners just didn’t give a shit about the car. They just ran it and let everything fall apart no maintenance. YES you run not walk away from one like this
I just spent $1600 for rotors, brake pads and a brake flush. $3K doesn't sound too bad.
Over double of what it should be. What are you driving?

Peter another good video. Thank you
YOU CAN SAVE IT
good video.
Ahh someone cheaped out on these repair jobs. Yikes
I'm really curious who owned this previously, mostly so I can avoid buying a used car from that type of person.
Meth is a helluva drug
@@mellowmanmace4346- that's actually a really good and insightful reason why that Toyota is so beat up.
Some Commiefornia "progressive" leftist.. with blue hair and a face full of metal.

That car was pulled out of a ceral box bought at the dollar store 😂
folks gota stop buying old cars they are piles of junk past 15 yrs old. Doesnt matter which brand
