The DDP theme was the most noticible of all the rip offs. When I hear Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", I think of DDP saying "Self high 5" at the beginning of the song.
+Anson D. Grimes let's not forget about the ripoff themes on those couple of video games. lol. The Hardy Boyz theme on Smackdown Shut Your Mouth was just awful! 😩
+Anson D. Grimes A real "hidden gem" would be the instrumental of Tattoo (Maven's theme) that could be accessed with a cheat device as well as some old themes for guys like edge, Albert, and billy gunn that were all left on the disc!
I have remembered that wrong for the past 19'ish years. I knew they used an Evenflow rip-off for entrance music and until I watched this, I would have said it was Raven's. 100% sure too. Well, the 90's are kind of a blur at points.
L1am21 Paul Heyman actually used to make music videos to that music and would lie and say it was used in conjunction with the record company of that given song so that whistle-blower people would dismiss calling the record companies to sue.
No Jeff Jarrett sang "With my baby tonight" in WWE. But even that was proved to be Road Dogg. Jeff never had a singing gimmick in WCW, though it would've fit his character. Curt Henning, Bobby Duncum Jr.,Barry Whindom, and Kendal Whindom sang "Rap is Crap."
I agree with Tony. Nika, your perspective on wrestling is really cool. But can u do reviews on more Neo Geo collections like the Samurai Shodown Anthology????
People can make fun of TNA all they want, I grew up hearing these copycat themes and although it worked for Raven and DDP's careers, I can't help but to feel it just made WCW look cheap.
I never noticed the pearl Jam thing. Also, another thing I noticed even when I was a kid, especially in the 90s, you could barely hear the theme songs. it's almost as if when the announcing was going you could hardly hear the song. IDK, maybe just me.
Some others: Primetime Elix Skipper - "Party Up" by DMX Saturn's late 1998 theme - "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" by Judas Priest Chris Benoit - "Replica" (don't know artist) But WWE and TNA have ripped off themes too. WWE's used "Hey Mickey", "No Sleep 'Till Brooklyn", "Forever", "Big Balls" and whatever song Sabu used in ECW. TNA had a rip off of "My Last Breath" by Evanescence. The beginning of "Down With The Sickness" by Disturbed too.
3Count's original theme "I Can't Get You Out of My Heart" took samples from both the Backstreet Boys ("Everybody [Backstreet's Back]") and NSYNC ("Tearing Up My Heart").
Ah, I actually liked Ravens and DDPs theme songs in WCW : p (Though Russos legit made me cringe, haha). But even though they were cheap knock offs, I actually really liked WCW theme songs : p The 90s had the best wrestling themes. The ones in WWE now are unbearable, just lame gross pop rock songs from bands you never heard of that have nothing to do with the wrestlers. I would take these songs over those anyday : p
These rip-off themes were made by Mouth of the South, Jimmy Hart and his production team. They used a technique known as interpolation. Nirvana did this with Boston's "More than a Feeling" by simply reversing the chord arrangement. So DDP's rip-off was a rip-off of another Rip-off. Just so ya know ;)
NXS Productions there are no two chords the same in those songs. Smells like teen spirits is all top of the neck of the guitar power chords. More than a feeling is more the mid part of the neck several octaves higher. lol
ALPHA OMEGA ok let's get technical lol smells like teen spirit chords are Fmin-Bb min-Ab-Db. More than a feeling has a verse of Dmaj-Cadd9-Gmaj and a chorus of G-C-Emin-D. Different chords and progression. How bout them apples lol
7:04 (Sings) I Am Vince Russo. Some Of You 90's Kids May Not Know Cause. I Am Vince Russo.Leader Of The Attitude Yes You Know Cause. I Am Vince Russo.Killed WCW And Nwo Cause. I Am Vince Russo.WWE Better Pay What They Owe.
Jericho actually talks about the theme in his first book in the chapter titled, "Basketball Highlights #12". He said that most wrestlers were given generic music that was written for Turner Sports background music. He said he was watching basketball on TBS, and heard his theme being played.
Re: The Steiners theme, they actually did use Welcome To The Jungle when they first debuted as a team in '89, so it is ironic that Rick's theme was similar to that.
Another one that I forgot about was Prince Iaukea's theme when he became "The Artist". He literally had a gimmick based off of Prince and a theme that was a rip off of "Purple Rain"
I saw them in 99 (I think it was) and there were hardly any people in a place that was packed for any other metal band. Most likely Metallica and Megadeth happily allowed usage (for a royalty of course), Nirvana and Pearl Jam wouldn't "sell out" in such a way.
You do know that televised wrestling shows have to license music for there stars to use no matter how they notify them they still get the okay from the record company, label or musician. That's why axel didn't sue. That's why some wrestler don't use actual songs my artists cause they can't get the license to use them.
whaduzitmatr Yeah in WWE. I don't know if it's true but I heard that's why "Start a war" was on one of the SVR games. As WWE did that as compensation to Static-X as they didn't have permission for love dump.
That wasn't a rip-off, that was the real thing--and WCW paid 100,000 bucks for the privilege. THIS is why WCW did all those sound-alike versions, because the real deals were expensive.
I'm on about the original NWO theme. You're trying to tell me Vince McMahon is paying the rights for it? I'm not talking about the Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child. The NWO theme is a mishmash of 2 Hendrix lesser known songs. So it counts as a rip off
The nWo black and white theme is Rockhouse by Frank Shelley, and since it is stock music, you can actually buy it on itunes. itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-history-of-rock-pop-vol.-1/id346378488
in the early 90s Dustin Rhodes had a theme that was a rip off of Dire Straits "money for nothing" and Barry Windham had one that sounded a lot like "spirit in the sky"
I remember when i first heard Raven and DDPs music was before i was into Nirvana and when I heard smells like teen spirit I thought hold on that's DDPs music.
One that used to drive me nuts was Kronics theme. It was a ripoff of "Love Dump" by Static X Ones like that made me madder, because I'm sure most people thought it was "original" WCW music. It was an unreleased track from a band that was not mainstream. I doubt most wrestling fans knew the original.
It goes back even further to the NWA days. The Road Warriors also used an Iron Man knockoff for their theme in the mid-to-late '80s. And the Midnight Express theme was a knock off of Giorgio Moroder's "Chase" theme from the movie Midnight Express.
In the National Wrestling Alliance days of the Steiner Bros, they actually used Guns and Roses, Welcome to the Jungle. The song was overdubbed with generic music.
at the end of WCW they had like 5 different musician parody wrestlers like The Demon, 3 Count, the artist formally known as Prince Iaukea and The Maestro. There's some other ones I can't remember. Vince Russo's theme sounds like what happens when you mess up a note on Guitar Hero. It was a rough listen
Both nirvana themes were so good with their characters though. I wish WWE would have done something to nod to it with DDP, but they gave him a shitty theme.
Whats funny was that Chris and DDP's theme songs are the reason why I was able to discover the original songs. I would hear the songs on the radio and think of them and expecting to hear them the same way as the theme songs lol.
Bit late to the party here, just found the channel. Nostalgia hearing old themes. That Judy Bagwell on a pole match ... kinda sad when you think about it. Judy Bagwell gets mentioned more than Buff at this point.
Nirvana's "Return of the Rat" (A rarity) would have been an awesome theme for Raven. The instrumentals/drums in that song are awesome, but the lyrics/theme of the song fit Raven's persona perfectly.
a version of Iron Man was also used for tthe Roadwarriors in WCW. Shawn Stasialk"The Perfect One" theme was based on Mr. Perfect's WWE theme THe Outsider's Theme was from a tune by Seal called Crazy
I hate how the Network dubs over the original theme music of wrestlers. Especially with the ECW. Terry Funk coming out to Desparado by the Eagles, Mikey Whipwreck with Loser by Beck, Public Enemy's Return of the High Steppa would get the Arena rocking. And Tommy Dreamers Man in the Box, which is ripped off by WWE. I think the best intro was Shane Douglas's. I would of been totally hyped by the time I got to the stage if I was entering to Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers. OR Sandman with of course, Enter Sandman. They made a performance out of it.
The iron man entrance theme was first used by The Legion of Doom in the (you guessed it) National Wrestling Alliance. So Vince russo wasn't the first one to use that theme song.
The Artist Formerly Known as Prince Iaukea (TAFKAPI) He came out as a Prince Purple Rain knockoff gimmick, and his song sounded alot like Purple Rain...
João Fonseca maybe the gimmick itself, but I'd argue it wasn't a parody, but even if that is true the theme song is a rip-off of "Purple Rain" and that is what this video is about....
I honestly can't believe how blatant and obvious these rip-offs are...you mean to tell me they never got sued for ANY of these? The Steiner one has the dogs barking from Jane's Addiction's - Been Caught Stealing too! When I first saw this video the first themes that came to mind were the Jericho & DDP ones off the bat. The beautiful people one is ridiculous. Another one which I found funny, but probably wasn't actually ripped was the theme of Mortis. It sounded exactly like a Castlevania theme I can remember, and his character certainly fit the theme!
Holy shit. I've always thought the wrestlers' theme were actually from bands but after listening to them now, they're totally slight different from the actual song.
Ernest "The Cat" Miller's theme wasn't a James Brown ripoff. It was a legit James Brown song that was recorded for the sole purpose of being Miller's theme.
The DDP theme was the most noticible of all the rip offs. When I hear Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", I think of DDP saying "Self high 5" at the beginning of the song.
Haha same here!
+NikateeN I agree with what you said about it ruining the feeling on the network when they play ddps entrance back.
The Vince Russo one is pretty noticeable as well.
Robert Beaudoin Lmao forreal!
more noticeable than Iron man?
It's shit like this that makes me think we've all been taking Jim Johnston for granted.
Amen, that dude is legitimately a musical genius.
The attitude era had some great original theme music. Meanwhile WCW had this cheap knockoff crap?
Miser Jones ,True
Funny considering Raven's finisher was the Evenflow...
SegaCDUniverse I was about to comment that before I saw this
SegaCDUniverse , Good point
I have remembered that wrong for the past 19'ish years. I knew they used an Evenflow rip-off for entrance music and until I watched this, I would have said it was Raven's. 100% sure too. Well, the 90's are kind of a blur at points.
SegaCDUniverse and they STILL used that theme or something like that in tna
That was my first though when hey said it.
You think with Ted Turner's money WCW would pay for the rights to use the real thing lol
ecw had the real things. jew connections lol
ECW just didn't pay haha
L1am21 racist
L1am21 Paul Heyman actually used to make music videos to that music and would lie and say it was used in conjunction with the record company of that given song so that whistle-blower people would dismiss calling the record companies to sue.
Anthony Grayson you saying jews don't look after each other? Italians and the Chinese do it too.
Vince Russo's theme is horrible, it sounds like someone's trying to play Iron Man but forgot how it went halfway through.
Hairy Cornflake YEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!
Damn...enough said.
Little known fact, Christian Cage's TNA theme was a ripoff of My Last Breath by Evanescence
MICHAEL BRADSHAW It was just the instrumental version. Not a ripoff.
Ricky Witte it wasn't an exact instrumental version, they tweaked it a bit so they could use it. So technically it was a ripoff
MICHAEL BRADSHAW Tomko used Vicarious by tool as his
Story of the Year did his most recent theme. So it wasn't a ripoff, well......it was from the original writer.
Edward Whitman the video and these comments are referring to his TNA theme...
Anybody else remember Curt Henig singing the "Rap is crap" song? Haha
Yup.
Jake Tillotson Memories. xD
Been watching those episodes of Nitro.
I thought it was Jeff Jarrett that sung that song
No Jeff Jarrett sang "With my baby tonight" in WWE. But even that was proved to be Road Dogg. Jeff never had a singing gimmick in WCW, though it would've fit his character. Curt Henning, Bobby Duncum Jr.,Barry Whindom, and Kendal Whindom sang "Rap is Crap."
You're easily one of the hidden gems of youtube, good sir. Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
+Anson D. Grimes I still love TNA I hope it doesn't close
+Anson D. Grimes so you like to see many people lose their jobs.
+Anson D. Grimes its not just the wrestlers think of all the people who work backstage.
But they all sounds great, who gives a shit if it made WCW look cheap.
that rip iron man theme is kinda jarring it note perfect for iron man for like 2 beats the differs in a jarring way
Yeah, it sounded pretty out-of-key.
I never noticed the pearl Jam thing. Also, another thing I noticed even when I was a kid, especially in the 90s, you could barely hear the theme songs. it's almost as if when the announcing was going you could hardly hear the song. IDK, maybe just me.
Some others:
Primetime Elix Skipper - "Party Up" by DMX
Saturn's late 1998 theme - "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" by Judas Priest
Chris Benoit - "Replica" (don't know artist)
But WWE and TNA have ripped off themes too.
And they destroyed "Man in the Box" before giving it to Tommy Dreamer
JustinEvitable80 blood brothers - replica (chris benoit theme)
I need a list of the theme songs that ripped those songs off
Nirvana's "Come As You Are" ALREADY was a rip off, of "Eighties" by Killing Joke - Kurt Cobain pretty much openly admitted it lol
I thought the same thing, so it was a double-ripoff.
While both songs came from The Damned - Life Goes On.
Smells Like Teen Spirit actually rips off the chorus of Boston - More Than A Feeling.
RagingCookie127 sounds nothing like it, people always say that
riffs and hooks can sound similar but the songs sound absolutely nothing alike. DDPs theme though is a blatant rip-off in every way.
3Count's original theme "I Can't Get You Out of My Heart" took samples from both the Backstreet Boys ("Everybody [Backstreet's Back]") and NSYNC ("Tearing Up My Heart").
victorli2000 that's because all the girls go down.... for The 3 Count!
I thought Ravens theme really suited him. Page's theme pushed it a bit far though... 😂
Jimmy Hart was the master of changing enough notes in a song to not get sued.
WWE needs to bring back the mom on a forklift match
John Cena's mom on a forklift match
Ah, I actually liked Ravens and DDPs theme songs in WCW : p (Though Russos legit made me cringe, haha). Reminds me of Northern Kings Don't Stop Believing Metal remake. The chords were made in minor arrangements
*the* *mid* * part* *of *the* *neck* *several* *octaves* *higher*
*lol*
ALPHA OMEGA ok let's get technical lol smells like teen spirit chords are Fmin-Bb min-Ab-Db.
More than a feeling has a verse of Dmaj-Cadd9-Gmaj and a chorus of G-C-Emin-D. Different chords and progression. How bout them apples lol
NXS Productions d
Not WCW but ECW
Taz' s theme was a rip-off of "War Machine" by KISS
Angus1973Young Is this sarcasm?
ECW didn't give a shit about getting sued, so they used the original themes without paying royalties.
ECW Sandman ..Metallica Enter the Sandman
usually they used the real track, but Taz's theme was made by Harry Slash & the Slashtones
They payed the loyalties.
7:04 (Sings) I Am Vince Russo. Some Of You 90's Kids May Not Know Cause.

Kyo Kunimia/KYOKUN94 lol
Kyo Kunimia/KYOKUN94 ,That shit is funny.
Kyo Kunimia/KYOKUN94 e
Here's one that doesn't get mentioned much: In 2000, the WCW Faction "Misfits In Action" theme was a ripoff of the '70s track "War" by Edwin Starr
"The Franchise" Shane Douglas had a ripoff of "Perfect Strangers" by Deep Purple.
Sid Vicious had "China White" by Scorpions.
7:03 Wow. It's so obviously ripped, it's funny hearing them trying to change it a bit to make it sound different. Failure.
Ernest ‘The Cat’ Miller was the most underrated WCW star in the post 83 weeks period and his theme music slapped. I will die on this hill
Tommy dreamer - man in the box by Alice in Chains
Jose Cabrera ECW used the real song, Heyman had lawsuits from artists because of it
Saturn's theme was made by MIDIs. You can easily hear the 90s and 2000s midi.
The Outsiders' theme resembled Crazy by Seal, and Shane Douglas' theme sounded a lot like Perfect Strangers by Deep Purple
Brazen that's cause shanes theme was deep purple lol
Another one that I forgot about was Prince Iaukea's theme when he became "The Artist". He literally had a gimmick based off of Prince and a theme that was a rip off of "Purple Rain"
did we forget that they copied seek and destroy by metallica for Sting
Randall Gilpin They actually used the Metallica's Woodstock performance for Stongs theme.
How they did pay for it and for Megadeth's Crush 'Em? who knows.
Megadeth was hurting in the late-90's, they probably paid WCW to use the song lol.
RoboticsNShenanigans They were making some commercial stuff in the 1990's, so I am pretty sure they weren't struggling at all with money.
I think the Raven theme suited him quite well actually
Thanks for taking me back to these, when I was younger watching WCW I would say to myself "This sounds like.... by ..... can they do that?"
Bruh, if there is ever a Hong Kong Fooey animated movie, Ernest Miller would be perfect cast for voice over.
Kronik used a instrumental version of Static X - Love Dump.
Not sure if it was a rip off or not.?
Daniel Mesias Lol. XD
Steven Richards used it by himself too for years afterward
whaduzitmatr Yeah in WWE. I don't know if it's true but I heard that's why "Start a war" was on one of the SVR games. As WWE did that as compensation to Static-X as they didn't have permission for love dump.
Vince Russo writing himself into TV was the definitive end of wcw. It was like the last seal had been broken and all hell broke loose!
Your videos bring so me so much joy! Love em! xD
Late 80s Steiners DID use Welcome to the Jungle.
Big fan!! Dont stop!! Glad i found ya!
the artist formerly known as Prince iaukea
Helllll yes. That theme was awesome by the way.
Chadwick Johnson I agree
Really good material, u should have more subscribers.
"Sounds like iron man"
Proceeds to play iron man
You missed the NWO theme. It's 2 different sections, from 2 of Hendrix lesser known songs, spliced together and it's great
That wasn't a rip-off, that was the real thing--and WCW paid 100,000 bucks for the privilege.
Raven's WCW theme ripoff of Nirvana is fantastic. One of the better theme songs WCW had.
It’s amazing though!!! It was great! They ripped the intro to Runnin with the devil at the beginning of Wrath’s theme.
I remember when i first heard Raven and DDPs music was before i was into Nirvana and when I heard smells like teen spirit I thought hold on that's DDPs music.
Russo’s theme sounds like me trying to play Iron Man on guitar as a kid.
Jerichos face theme that was mentioned earlier here was Mammoth's All the days.
Haha! Just went and checked it out, never knew it was a real song! Thanks for the info!
Why is this video nostalgic now
Buzzkills Wcw theme, and gimmick, was a watered down version of his brother, the ol Road Dogg.
Wow. This is something I never knew. Great topic for the video. A nice background research dude. Keep up the great work. U really rock.!!!
One that used to drive me nuts was Kronics theme. It was a ripoff of "Love Dump" by Static X
Ones like that made me madder, because I'm sure most people thought it was "original" WCW music. It was an unreleased track from a band that was not mainstream. I doubt most wrestling fans knew the original.
If they do ever add back custom themes to the WWE games, I would immediately put all the rip off WCW themes In the game
Love your wrestling videos!
It goes back even further to the NWA days. The Road Warriors also used an Iron Man knockoff for their theme in the mid-to-late '80s. And the Midnight Express theme was a knock off of Giorgio Moroder's "Chase" theme from the movie Midnight Express.
love these videos bro.
Dj Bootleg thanks a lot!
so happy u made this video. ....cuz i thought the same thing for yrs lol
Literally everything in this was written by a drunk guy in a bar with a guitar jamming to popular songs
In the National Wrestling Alliance days of the Steiner Bros, they actually used Guns and Roses, Welcome to the Jungle. The song was overdubbed with generic music.
Rick Rude's WCW Theme (Around the time of the Dangerous Alliance affiliation) was a match-up to Janet Jackson's song "Black Cat"
Hugh Morris theme from the faction in WCW called the first family manged by Jimmy Hart used the song called the Zoo by the Scorpions
Kid Romeo was "The Cup of Life" (Ricky Martin)
The Artist Formerly Known as Prince Iaukea "Purple Rain" (Prince)
Elix Skipper "Party Up" ( DMX)
at the end of WCW they had like 5 different musician parody wrestlers like The Demon, 3 Count, the artist formally known as Prince Iaukea and The Maestro. There's some other ones I can't remember. Vince Russo's theme sounds like what happens when you mess up a note on Guitar Hero. It was a rough listen
Man that Jericho Pearl Jam brought back so many fuckin memories 😅😅 thank God I experienced wrestling during that era
Jericho even flow them was hard
Both nirvana themes were so good with their characters though. I wish WWE would have done something to nod to it with DDP, but they gave him a shitty theme.
Jericho has actually said that he was never given a chance to choose his theme song in WCW.
U got some wrestling topics up here! Nice bruh!
Whats funny was that Chris and DDP's theme songs are the reason why I was able to discover the original songs. I would hear the songs on the radio and think of them and expecting to hear them the same way as the theme songs lol.
If you carefully listen to Dean Ambrose theme you can hear Chris Benoit theme in it the beat just tweaked
No you can’t...stop making comments to get noticed and look cool...you’re not and get over it...
Angel Gotiko lol
love these videos. best content!
If WCW wasn't paying royalties on those songs then some lawyers missed out on a huge payday.
Also, when the Steiner's made their start in NWA/WCW, they came to the ring using Welcome to the Jungle... so there ya go.
Jerichos face theme was actually done by Mammoth, the song is called all the days
Don't forget, Raven's theme not only ripped off Come As Your Are, but also That Smell by Skynyrd.
During the late 80's the Steiner Bros. actually used Welcome to the Jungle
The beginning of Charlottes theme is the music from the beginning of a Black Ops 1 match.
Chris Benoit's song was the instrumental to "Replica" by Blood Brothers
a version of Iron Man was also used for tthe Roadwarriors in WCW.
Shawn Stasialk"The Perfect One" theme was based on Mr. Perfect's WWE theme
THe Outsider's Theme was from a tune by Seal called Crazy
I hate how the Network dubs over the original theme music of wrestlers. Especially with the ECW. Terry Funk coming out to Desparado by the Eagles, Mikey Whipwreck with Loser by Beck, Public Enemy's Return of the High Steppa would get the Arena rocking.
So Vince russo wasn't the first one to use that theme song.
great compilation
actually Come As You Are fit Raven perfectly. he is not just hardcore, he is a thinking and feeling man's wrestler's too.
They are not just rip offs, they sound like garage bands that just didn't know how to play it right...
Raven and Chris jericho was lit
The Artist Formerly Known as Prince Iaukea (TAFKAPI)
He came out as a Prince Purple Rain knockoff gimmick, and his song sounded alot like
Purple Rain...
Mick Paul that's a parody, I don't think it counts as a rip off
João Fonseca
maybe the gimmick itself, but I'd argue it wasn't a parody, but even if that is true the theme song is a rip-off of "Purple Rain" and that is what this video is about....
Mick Paul definitely surprise Prince didn't sue, Hell his music is finally on Spotify a year after he died
All those themes suited the wrestlers perfectly
WWE is doing it today; one of their cruiserweights has a theme that sounds very reminiscent of Battle without Honor or Humanity
Holy shit. I've always thought the wrestlers' theme were actually from bands but after listening to them now, they're totally slight different from the actual song.
lmao! such an awesome vid! I always thought the same growing up watching wcw. Why do some of these songs sound familiar???? lol
Only one I knew was DDP's Smells Like Teen Spirit because it was number 1 in some guy's best entrance theme and I was like WTF??????????
funny thing is no one ever brings up bob hollys theme it was totally sad but true remake
Ernest "The Cat" Miller's theme wasn't a James Brown ripoff. It was a legit James Brown song that was recorded for the sole purpose of being Miller's theme.
That's just it they match wrestlers to theme music to the style of the character
