I’d always heard the story that Rowling told Rickman about Snape’s backstory before/during filming TPS so he could get those subtleties of the character right but this is the first I’m hearing that this didn’t happen until after COS was already released.
It’s for that reason I’d always praised the first look he gave to Harry in the Great Hall as it has the surface level reading of “Oh, it’s _him,”_ which had the later context of “It’s _James’_ son,” and then finally “…It’s Lily’s son.” So the fact he was able to get that look in complete ignorance of what Snape was meant to be thinking is a huge coincidence but a very fortunate one nonetheless.

Even Rowling only had Rickman in mind, in spite of him being much older than the characters she’d written and forcing the actors for James and Lily to have to be aged up to, because matching with Rickman was too important…
So I have nothing but sympathy for whoever is about to be cast as Snape in the new show. He, like many in that cast, have an impossibly big - and recently acted - role to follow.

So long as they try to be themselves and not try and be Rickman- it’ll be fine.
You cannot fill the shoes of some people. Kind of like Will Smith taking the role of Genie- it just could not and cannot be done.
If you try and be that person- it comes off heartless and cheap.

I think they should do a animated series instead of a live series. The core three also had struggles on staying vs leaving. Who knows how many others. It's easier to avoid these things in animation with two, three, or four different actors having one role (if necessary).

@@bees_nail_art82 That's what I mean when I said it should be animated. I doubt it will be, but it should. No one can guarantee live action (and other real world) situations, especially ten years down the line. The movies proved that. With animation, it wouldn't be a problem. You just get an actor who sounds similar for replacement when things come up.

This is pretty shocking to hear, but it makes sense. In the first film, Snape seems cold, but not nasty towards Harry. Chamber of Secrets was even more odd, as Snape was a bit more distant, yet not as cold towards Harry.
It was only around the third film were we started to finally see the book Snape come to life, with consistent portrayals of Snape and his attitude towards Harry.
Example, the first film. Snape seemed to introduce himself to Harry and was instantly cold to him. Yet he had this overall protective aura about him when it came to Harry.
The second film, he wasn't necessarily nasty to Harry. He just bullied him in class but didn't really give off the notion that he loathed Harry.
In Prisoner of Azkaban, THAT is when we started to get more of the loathing aura that Snape had towards Harry. That he just didn't even like to see Harry or be around him and he treated him accordingly.
At least we know the answer, thanks Dean!

With the new series coming up this is a plus. The whole story is out and serves as a complete blueprint.

Adam Driver is just too handsome. They'll have to 'gaunt him down in makeup (Rickman did it within the character as "Snape" appeared. at the call for action.) Driver is a great talent but Rickman/Snape is ingrained in our psyches.
Of all the performances, this will be the hardest to cast anew.
Who, worth their salt, wants to step into the shoes of THE icon of the entire first franchise?

fI think Allen Rickman carried the show and without him it may have flopped. He was brilliant at acting this roll making Snape with his conflicting under currants and divided loyalties. Finding out at end of the series what a good and brave man he was.

Yes, please let us NOT be so quick to dismiss the sacrifices these actors
made to create the Harry Potter series of Movies.
Alan Rickman was battling his Cancer
Maggie Smith was battling breast Cancer
The Stunt double for Daniel Radcliffe had a tragic accident that has left him paralyzed
Sir Richard Harris's Granddaughter begged him to take the Role of Dumbledore
but he knew there just would be no way he could do all of the movies
and this weighed on his mind.
Daniel Radcliffe was battling depression which lead to him being an Alcoholic and other things during the filming of the movies. which I believe he has recovered from.
There are many other Actors that had health problems.
All of these Actors and Directors, set and costumes designers felt they were creating A Movie series that was very special
and would be beloved as a classic for a lifetime .
They put their best of their abilities into the creation of these films

I had a thought that if actors/actresses had a dark or alter ego in one of their film/t.v. roles and who might they be. A lot of people would right away lay claim that Alan Rickman's dark ego might be Professor Snape, however I am thinking this is not true; then it got to me think that what if one movie character had a dark ego in another movie character; may the two movies be unrelated or not; I would say that Snape's dark ego might be Judge Turpin; both characters vie for a significant other they could never have a steady/healthy relationship with and they both have the contingency to jump to wrong conclusions and they both come off as moody and sometimes have a bit of a nasty side and you could never tell what they might do next. The biggest difference between Snape and Turpin (besides one being a modern wizard and the other being a 19th century horror muggle) is Snape knows his boundaries with women; but Turpin who takes advantage of women does not.

Alan Rickman made Snape his own. With that voice of his, the dramatic pauses between words, the regal and hardened demeanor, he was truly chilling. The next version of Snape should keep the character to the books...agitated, angry, reactive, sullen. That's the only way another version of Snape can be played and be just as good.

I still can't watch that scene towards the end of the second part of Deathly Hallows, the Prince's Tale, where Snape goes to James & Lily's house to see if they're safe or what happened, and finds Lily is dead. He cradles her dead body in his arms and just cries. We can't hear it but the heartbreak is just crushingly real, his soul is shattered. The Snape we know, who is so controlled, just loses it completely. I never admired Snape more than when we see that shot of him outside James and Lily's house, wand in hand, scoping out the scene. He might not know whether or not Voldemort is still in there, but still he goes in, and Voldemort would certainly kill him if he saw him. Snape's 'cover' would be completely blown, but he goes in anyway, so great is his love for Lily. We know he would have fought and died for Lily if he had to. We know because he did die protecting Harry, which is as close to Lily as he would be able to get, even though I don't think he had any personal attachment to Harry at all. Alan Rickman captured the deeply tortured soul of Severus Snape as no one else could have and I'm glad he didn't leave the role. We can never get him back but Alan Driver would be a good choice to do the role. He could do it and maybe pull some even more interesting stuff out of the character which would be great to see.
