    i have been growing mushrooms for the past 2 winters now and they have been growing great but there has always been one doubt i have always had. I grow mushrooms in transparent bags and i make adequate amount of holes for the mushrooms to grow from but sometimes the pins start to come out from a place where ther is no sign of a hole and in that scenario i then have to cut a new slit beside the new growing pin. Do i need to be so cautious or should i just let them grow from where ever they like?

  • @ColinBell78
    @ColinBell78 Год назад +1

    Thanks for the great video. When you pick the grown mushrooms do more grow out of the holes in the bucket or do you need to start over?

    • @Milkwood
      @Milkwood  Год назад +1

      Hey, no worries - yep after ypou've harvested all the mushrooms, put them back in incubation mode (ie change the temp, you can re-tape the holes too, if you like) for a week, then put them back in fruiting mode, you should get another flush? Some folks empty their buckets into a pile of straw outside after the first fruiting and kind of run an 'outdoor pile' which fruits randomly - if you have the space :)

      Well done. They might "flush" again out of the same holes after a week or two, but if they don't the used substrate (straw) will make great compost.

    hey was wondering if you can reuse the spent milciluim and just do this over again or must you buy grain spawn every time?

    • @Milkwood
      @Milkwood  2 года назад +3

      Hey Peter - it depends on the type of grow: we do reuse spent substrate in mushroom gardens for example. But, if you're growing buckets, it's not a great idea - it could introduce mould into your grow and, with a reduced nutrition level, it probably won't produce such a great harvest.
      That said, people learn new things all the time by giving it a go - for example, if you're growing oysters in buckets on sawdust, you can possibly use that spent sawdust to innoculate some logs! So...

    Can I use coconut husk and/or rice hulls as substrate? And use masking tape instead of surgical tape?

    • @Milkwood
      @Milkwood  2 года назад

      Hi Marc, we recommend hardwood sawdust in our Home Mushroom Cultivation course, but you could substitute coconut husks and/or rice hulls if you don't have access to it. We recommend you follow our method as close as you can so you can learn the process and then start playing around with more experimental methods after you've mastered the basics, like cooking from a recipe for the first time.
      The paper-based surgical tape contains many microscopic holes, acting as a filter that allows the flow of oxygen and carbon dioxide but helping stop microscopic organisms and hence contaminants. Because of the role the micropore tape / surgical tape plays as a filter, it cannot be readily substituted. Some people recommend polyfill (pillow stuffing type fibers), but this is not recommended, as insects can still climb through the fibers.
      Hope that helps.

    It's pretty impossible using this method in the SW as the air is just too dry. I had success putting my bucket in larger container and putting a layer of water in the bottom for moisture.

    • @Milkwood
      @Milkwood  2 года назад +1

      Dry air can be a problem - mushrooms need humidity in order to be able to form and develop. Placing buckets in larger containers with a layer of water does help, and the addition of perlite will further improve humidity. You might also like to look into dedicated fruiting chambers.

    I don't have any straw. I was wondering if I can use chopped up leaves from trees.

    • @Milkwood
      @Milkwood  2 года назад +1

      Instead of straw, you can use things like sugar cane mulch, clean bedding straw, and grasses - be sure to remove the leaves and seed heads. In a pinch leaves may work, but we'd recommend following our method closely first up, so you can learn the process before you start playing around with more experimental methods.
      If you do use leaves, try use fresh dry ones, that aren't from poisonous plants or a location where they've been exposed to environmental toxins. Hope that helps!

    Great Video but I would like to add just a bit of info:
    one little flake of skin can destroy all of your efforts so it's best to put on nitrile type gloves during the grain spawn to straw process.

    • @Milkwood
      @Milkwood  3 года назад

      Thanks for your thoughts here and glad you liked the video. We've found that in this type of process - where we're adding oyster mushroom spawn to a pasteurised (rather than sterilised) straw substrate - it hasn't been too much of an issue.

    • @themyceliumnetwork
      @themyceliumnetwork 3 года назад

      @@Milkwood "it hasn't been too much of an issue"
      1% of an issue can cause 100% of an issue, so the importance of avoiding that 1% is very important !

    Awesome video! Can you keep the bucket indoors and mist it daily if you don't want it outdoors. Also if the bucket is keep in the bathroom do you still need to mist it daily?

    • @Milkwood
      @Milkwood  2 года назад

      Yes, you can keep the bucket indoors. Mushrooms need moist humid air to grow so if you keep the bucket indoors, when the developing mushrooms begin to emerge from the holes, the buckets will need to be misted at least once a day - Whether you keep the bucket in your bathroom or another part of the house.
      The mist that settles on the bucket and evaporates, creating humidity around the bucket that is important for the mushroom growth. Keep in mind that if your air is dry or there is too much air movement, that moisture may evaporate quickly, so you may need to mist the bucket multiple times a day.

    • @cainebarlow216
      @cainebarlow216 2 года назад +1

      I'm curious what you mean by a "slurry". Do you mean a Liquid culture, in which case I would not recommend using Liquid cultures in this situation due to the increased risk of contamination - Liquid culture is great for making spawn, but not for the final substrate. While there are a lot of interesting and novel methods, it is best to start with the most foolproof method so you can learn the process then start playing around with more experimental methods after you've mastered the basics. It is like cooking from a recipe for the first time.

    Alcohol gel leaves a layer on your skin until it's washed off wth soap and water, so I wouldn't personally use or advocate using it for this process. Using it a few times in a row followed by hand washing feels disgusting and is one of my most hated parts of being a health care worker (it also causes skin breakdown/dermatitis when over used, as does over hand washing). - Corryn
