Very interesting substrate, i noticed its very common to use hardwood fuel pellets and wheat bran mixed together, but this video proves hardwood fuel pellets can be used by itself as well. Going to try your way, but im going to add one cup of wheat bran just for more nutrients. Hopefully that does not mess up the moisture content. Thank you for the video!
Let me know how it goes! Adding wheat bran without sterilization increases the chance for contamination. If your substrate becomes contaminated, try half a cup or less. But if you use a really high spawn rate, like the one used in this video, I think you can get away with using a decent amount of unsterilized wheat bran.
You can add something like gypsum safely, but since the wood pellets are mostly sterilized, any other nutrients you add will more than likely get moldy unless you sterilize the substrate mix.
Have you grown oysters on these pellets as well? Curious how that substrate would work. Also, what is the volume expansion for the fuel pellets? Trying to figure out how many pellets would be required to fill a 5 gallon bucket.
This method works great with oyster methods. Just make sure to cut a series of small houses (1/4 inch) instead of two big ones. To translate this recipe from a 2 gallon bucket to a 5 gallon bucket, increase the water and hardwood fuel pellets by 150%.
Great job! I'm shocked that you could get a 2nd and 3rd flush from same exact holes? The instructions that came with my fruiting block (in a unicorn bag) stated to tape the hole after first harvest is pulled, and then cut slots/ holes in different areas of the block for the next flushes...?

No problem! This was my first experiment with a lion's mane bucket, and my thinking was that, since the bucket weighs about two 4-pound grow bags, that two holes might be a good option. I've recently created a new lion's mane bucket with just one hole, and it works just as good, if not better. One advantage of having just one hole is that the substrate won't dry out as fast.
At that point, the substrate doesn't need to sit any longer and is ready to go. I just closed the lid because when I'm not actively doing something with the substrate, I like to keep the lid closed to reduce contamination risk. In theory, you could start filling the bucket up right after mixing the grain spawn in without closing the lid again. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the video. A couple of questions, how many flushes would you usually get? And is there a disadvantage of not sterilising the substrate, e.g would it produce for flushes if it was sterilised?
You can get anywhere from 2 to 5 flushes! After the first flush, the following flushes will yield less as nutrients in the substrate become gradually depleted. The disadvantage of not sterilizing is that you increase contamination risk. However, by using a high spawn rate, it greatly reduces contamination risk. I've never experienced contamination with this method.
@@stratocaster1134 In total, the substrate weighs about 9 pounds, which is the size of two medium grow bags. In terms of yield, it's hard to make an exact comparison to grow bags because the preparation is a bit different. With the bucket, there's no supplementation (like wheat bran) added, which is typical for a grow bag. Not adding wheat bran makes it possible to skip sterilization, but, if you were to add wheat bran and sterilize, which is how grow bags are typically prepared, the yield would increase. At the same time, the bucket method I've outlined in the video calls for a grain spawn rate that is much higher than what you'd expect in a grow bag (40% instead of 10% to 15%), and more grain = more nutrition = higher yield. Ultimately, you'll likely get a higher yield by creating a 9-pound supplemented grow bag than you would with a 9-pound bucket with a high spawn rate, but the magic of the bucket method is that you don't need a pressure cooker or any other expensive equipment. Just a bucket and someone to buy grain spawn from!
Hi, I know from your video that pellets are partialy sterilized, but, how to get additional purity to them, without pressure cooker, or proper sterilization? Can you bath them with hydrated calcium? Or pellets on their own, even after opening a bag with them few times, keep purity?
There's a difference between sterilization and pasteurization. When the pellets are made, they use steam and pressure which makes them sterilized . The reason its PARTIALLY is because you dont know what else its been exposed to sitting on the shelf or in transit. It will be a disaster if you soak them in hydrated lime as this is more suited for straw. Anyway, I think there are a ton of videos on how to do these methods online. If you mean PURITY by sterilization, then you will need to pressure cook any of the material for 2hrs at 15psi. Your option to keep them sterilized would be to get mushroom growbags that have a filter patch. Make bulk substrate and put it into the bag. Seal the bag and sterilize in the pressure cooker. The substrate blocks that will be what you end up with will stay good for quite a while if they stay sealed. There really isnt a need to do this method though unless you are growing on a larger scale.
I recently started growing lion's mane at home for the first time, and I'm curious about a couple of things. I inoculated three jars with liquid culture in whole oats, and let the mycelium colonize the jars before splitting the grain spawn up between two buckets. I was a little concerned when I emptied the jars into the hard wood pellets I used, as the middle of the jars didn't seem to be as well colonized as the outsides. There was some really nice, thick mycelium on the outer edge of the jars, but the middle of all three jars was pretty sparse. I'd always read that you didn't want uncolonized grains in your bulk substrate, but rewatching your video it looks like the spawn you used wasn't anywhere near as colonized as mine was. Is it normal when using jars to not have the entire thing colonized like mine? Because it looks like yours worked out fine. Also, I followed the formula for how much water to use in your hard wood pellets, but it seemed like mine came out dry. I'm somewhat familiar with the term "field capacity", and my pellets didn't seem to have any excess water to squeeze out like I expected. I went ahead and pushed forward with it all anyway, but I'm worried that my hard wood pellets may not have enough water in them. Does the pellets/water ratio that you use naturally give a slightly drier substrate?
This is so great! Will this process also work with sawdust spawn (instead of grain spawn)? I know the mushrooms won't contain gluten themselves, but we have two folks with celiac and it's just healthier for us not to have gluten-containing grains around at all to avoid cross-contamination and reactions. TY!
How many harvests can we expect from a bucket? Can the old grain be used as spawn when starting a new bucket? Thanks, looking forward to getting started.
Should we compress the sawdust into the bucket? And can we expand the bulk bucket to more buckets instead of fruiting or is the sawdust alone not enough nutriention?
soo.... I followed your instructions. same thing, the fruits were popping through the tape.... it was impossible to remove the tape without ripping off the fruit.... so it kind of set everything back. after a few days it started growing another one.... but it has a yellowish color..... does that mean it's contaminated?

@@folkfungi Thanks for the info! Would you say that it would produce a similar yield to the standard grow bag?
Do you eat them after or just do it as a fun experiment?
This is so great! Will this process also work with sawdust spawn (instead of grain spawn)? I know the mushrooms won't contain gluten themselves, but we have two folks with celiac and it's just healthier for us not to have gluten-containing grains around at all to avoid cross-contamination and reactions. TY!
Could you add more then two holes to the buckets?
This is simple. I like it. I never know you could mix the pellets without sterilizing. How come you didn’t add wheat bran?
Hello, I really appreciate the video. Great explanation! Are your products organic?
Well that's all I needed to know to gain the confidence to start LM. Thanks a ton!
Glad to hear that! And no problem!
How many harvests can we expect from a bucket? Can the old grain be used as spawn when starting a new bucket? Thanks, looking forward to getting started.
Do I need a grow tent? Lions Mane grows on wood, if I grow inside my house, won't inhale to worry about spore spreads
How many harvests can you get before you need to dump everything out and start again?
This is what I wanted to know it shows a reply to your question, but I don’t see anything?
You can usually get 3 to 4 harvests.

Cool! Newbie here.
Why don't you just add the spawn next to the holes? Doesn't a lot of it go to waste?
Great video! Thanks for sharing! How many times can you get them to grow? And what is the total cost?
How many cycle can I get after 1st harvest.????
Can you start a new bucket with the used substrate?
Very well explained and simple, thank you so much
Cool stuff! Mushrooms (all varieties) are certainly having their renaissance. ima give the bucket o’ manes method a try. Thank you for sharing! 🙏 🍻 🍄💕.
No problem! Let me know how it goes!
hi guys, what was the temperature for growing?
thanks an this is the only video i found which tell how to grow it in the simplest way heads off to you and keep it up
@rosemarymark6704 i have schizophrenia i cant take psychedelics i have trips without any substances so you can imagine what will magic mushroom whould do to me but thanks
Hardwood fuel pullets can be made from treated wood, or have been exposed to chemicals. They were intended to go into a furnace.
I’m new to your channel and I am equally as new to growing anything lol. Thank you for this tutorial. I’m going to try. Do you cook them? Or make a tea out of them?
What is your favorite tasting mushroom. I’m a beginner and I’m interested in this method because it seems simpler and no nonsense.
How cost effective is this substrate just curious looking to do small commercial
This is awesome. I was wondering why you wouldn't take the lid off. I'm definitely going to try this. Would this also work for morals?
So do you just throw away the old mushroom substrate after a while? How many harvests?
The canadian retailers I'm looking up sell either syringes of lion's mane, or cork-sized plugs full of lion's mane. I don't see grain spawn like in this video. Should I use syringes to make it myself?
You can make yourself if you want, but if it’s your first time growing mushrooms, I’d advise buying it first. Go to folkfungi.com (my website) and send me a message through the contact form, and I can sell you some.
Great. That's a very simple but effective technique. What's the humidity range from start to finish. Thanks for your post.
Ideally, try to keep the humidity in the 80% to 90% range, but it will grow decently in the 70s.
@@folkfungi thanks for your prompt reply. All the best
