Definitely the simplest usb creator video making use of system utils already out there, i've seen for a long time without memorising a whole bunch of terminal commands. cheers to you.
Wow a tutorial explanation that actually gives me the advertised ability! It's not just "entertainment" watching someone else do it, but I can't read the tiny, blurry details in their screen image. I wasted so much time on other videos that failed to deliver. I was beginning to lose faith in RUclips creators. Your video is a breath of fresh air! ✨
Hooray!!! A tutorial video that actually works. I wasted time following other videos and guidance that did not work because the suggested options just are not there on my system. Also most assumed that you are creating the flash drive on a machine that already has Sequoia installed. Eg. App Store will not let me get Sequoia when run from my old Monterey MacBook because its too old to be upgraded Thank you Jeff
Perfect It's very helpful I will replace my mac mini m4 ssd I want to use this flash drive on it Can you explain Thanks I am pc user Never use a mac before and try to learn Thanks
out of curiousity, why did you use the method thru terminal instead of downloading from the app store? Is it because this was still beta at the time of recording?
@@9to5MacGotcha. I was having a really tough time downloading it through Terminal because it just kept stopping. I also had problems in the app store, but that's where I ultimately found success with my download. Probably user error ;)
One thing needed to be added to this video. Macs with a T2 chip or M-series are set up to not allow booting from external drives. I ran into this exact problem when trying to reinstall an OS right after wiping the drive. You have to boot into recovery and enable booting from an external drive with an existing admin account with the Startup Security Utility. If you wipe your drive before enabling this, there’s no admin account, so the only option is to use Internet recovery.
True, I have a follow up on the actual installation process in the works. Also it’s not always about booting. I.e. engage an install from macOS on another volume from an external installer. It’s just a nice tool to have overall. That said, your point is definitely right as far as booting is concerned. So much more difficult than the good ol days.
Can you explain how to use internet recovery? I have a 2018 Mini that seems to be completely wiped and saying “There are no users on this volume to recover.” and won’t read any usb drives to try and boot with or install from.
@@techinrl9869 Oh man… I’m glad I saw you message. I spent the whole afternoon trying to do a recovery on a late 2018 mac mini. I was ok with internet recovery but the Mac wouldn’t recognize my lan cable and always ask me to connect to wifi. So I tried wifi, first it went ok but after 20 minutes I got that 3001f error. Tried three times same problem. My wifi works fine. So I created a Sequoia bootable usb and whatever I do it would constantly lead me to that “choose network” screen with no other option. My hardware is ok since I used the Mac until I decided to sell it and do a recovery - yesterday. So : - no lan - error on wifi - no usb Is there anything I can do ?
OK so after six attempts I managed to compete the first part of the internet recovery through wifi. As installing would take 22 hours and 30 minutes (!!) I saw that I could restart and choose to boot on usb. So it worked and I was able to choose the « sequoia installer » option but still I have to select wifi (lan not recognized) and go through the « internet recovery » from the beginning… and now it’s stuck at « 13 minutes »… it’s never been so annoying before…
Yep, I just tried it on my Sonoma VM, and it only returns Sonoma. So looks like a yes. I'm going to test and see if Sequoia shows up if I enable Dev betas. I'm downloading Sonoma to install on another volume, then will double check to see if that's all it takes. The thing is, I was already running Sequoia when I made the disk 🤣
So I just confirmed. If 15.0 isn't showing up, enable the Sequoia Beta in Settings → General → Software Updates, then re-run the command and it should appear.
In case you wish to install macOS Sequoia on your Mac. It affords more flexibility. For example, say you had slow Internet, and didn't want to use the traditional recovery method. It's just a nice to have for several reasons.
If you have fewer macs or slower internet at home or primarily on capped internet packages you would not want to download such a huge file multiple times now isn't it?
I don't have any reason of installing this, but it does give me an idea -- I may eventually buy another used Mac device and see if I could install it onto that one 😁if it doesn't work, that's fine. I just like testing stuff out like that lol
I notice that I don't get the same variety of installers when I do this. I only see 14.5 and 14.4.1 ... I wonder why? EDIT: With Sonoma Public Betas switched on; 14.6 shows up. But there is no option in the Software Update control panel for Sequoia. Only Off or Sonoma Public Beta.

when i follow exactly the instructions, I get the following: Erasing disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%... 100% Copying essential files... Copying the macOS RecoveryOS... Making disk bootable... Failed to extract AssetData/boot/Firmware/Manifests/InstallerBoot/* from update bundle The bless of the installer disk failed.
Jeff Benjamin's voice and narration are always excellent.
I have searched a lot for this and found many bad and/or wrong answers. This one works and is cristal clear. 5 stars!!! Thank you

Sometimes the App Store download is wonky.

Is it possible to run Mac OS on a usb drive?
I am looking at installing MacOS Sequoia on my Compaq Presario CQ61 and it also has a Intel Core 2 Duo
I have a 1tb thumb drive, can I make partitions to have the installer one 1 partition and other storage on the rest of the drive ?
GREAT VIDEO I TRULY APPRECIATE THE INFO IT WAS VERY HELPFUL
very clear, thanks !
Hi 9to5 Mac Do you know if there has been a beta software release for iOS 18 on the AirPod pros? Yours sincerely Holly
Thank you
I'm running Sonoma 14.5 here and just tried this and Sequoia is not listed. Do you have to be running a developer branch?
Hmm, perhaps. Do you have beta updates enabled in Settings → General → Software Updates? Please let me know.
