    Thank you! QUESTION… I have an already made bootable drive that was made exactly the way you instructed. If I simply want to move that one to a *different* thumb drive, can I just *drag & and drop* the installer onto a newly formatted thumb drive? Meaning one that’s been formatted correctly as Mac OS Extended Journaled.
    The original one was created properly via the terminal, and I’ve even used it to restore my iMac. So I’m hoping since that part of the job was already done, that I can just drag & drop the installer to the new drive. Or do I actually have to do the whole creation process all over again?

    • @thefiestaguy8831
      @thefiestaguy8831 Месяц назад +1

      Probably the machine you are using is too new and it doesn't support the older OS, so it won't allow you to download OR install them.
      I have this issue, I currently own a 2023 MacBook Pro M3 Pro chip and can only create OS Sonoma and OS Ventura install media with it. To create Catalina, High Sierra, Mojave media I am currently using a 2015 Retina 13' MacBook Pro (A1502) model that I bought to fix up and sell, it's not ideal and it means when I have partitioned the drive into 5 partitions, I created OS Sonoma and OS Ventura install media on my own Macbook and then have to create the other 3 install medias on the same drive from the 2015 MacBook I am fixing up... pain in the backside, but it works.
      I wish apple would just allow you to download (not necessarily install) any older OS to create install media.

      I had this issue when I tried to clone the USB bootable to another USB to create a second bootable USB.
      When I ran all of the commands one by one to create install media onto the same drive, all of the icons showed correctly.
      I can only assume the clone system (I own a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner) doesn't always work 100% and sometimes the icons are missing or don't transfer properly if you clone one bootable USB to another.

  • @sinoptik0274
    @sinoptik0274 Год назад

    Is it normal, when i hold option in the boot picker there is efi partition appear, so you got the internal disk, macOS Installer, and EFI partition? And then when the macOS is choosen, it is not going to the installer, but to the recovery.

    • @thefiestaguy8831
      @thefiestaguy8831 Месяц назад

      I found that if I created the bootable media this way, it works fine and shows the icons.
      BUT when I cloned the bootable USB, to another bootable USB, some of the installers had missing icons and weren't named properly and just said "EFI Boot" when I put that USB into a Mac and tried to boot from them.
      As I understand booting into the recovery section is normal - after all the first thing terminal does when creating a bootable USB is to copy the OS Recovery system onto the USB. The idea being it's not JUST a bootable USB that you can ONLY install an OS from, it's a USB that you can install an OS from and also launch terminal to run commands, or launch Time Machine to restore from a backup, etc.
      Ideal for someone who has an OS on their existing Mac with loads of applications and files they don't want to lose, but need to run a repair command or tweak something in terminal.

    I get this error from the terminal. NB: Boot is my volume name

    • @thefiestaguy8831
      @thefiestaguy8831 Месяц назад

      zsh:killed usually means the OS you are trying to create install media for, is not compatible with the OS you are currently running on that Mac device.
      I.E I cannot create OS Big Sur or OS High Sierra install media on my 2023 MacBook Pro M3 Pro laptop as it's too new, I can only create OS Sonoma and OS Ventura install media. I got the same error when trying to create OS Catalina, OS Mojave and OS High Sierra install media.
      The work around was to create OS Sonoma and OS Ventura install media using terminal on my 2023 Mac and then eject and disconnect the USB and run the three relevant commands in terminal using in my case a 2015 Retina MacBook Pro 13' that I am in the process of repairing to sell.
      It is a bit ridiculous and a pain in the backside to have to use two laptops to create a single USB with 5 different OS installers on it, but it does work.

  • @barkingpumpkin
    @barkingpumpkin Год назад

    How do you get the High Sierra Installer with a computer running Ventura ? It won't allow me to download the installer from the App Store using this method. It keeps trying to run my software update and says everything is updated. I also directly downloaded the dmg file from Apple but I can't run the installer to get the app because it says not compatible. I'm trying to install on an old Mac MIni. I also can't run recovery mode on the Mac MIni. The date and time are correct but it just keeps saying the server is not available.

    • @thefiestaguy8831
      @thefiestaguy8831 Месяц назад

      You can't.
      I've got the same problem as I own a 2023 MacBook Pro M3 Pro chip laptop. I can only create OS Sonoma and OS Ventura install media from it.
      I happen to own at the moment a 2015 Retina MacBook Pro 13 inch (A1502 model) and a 2012 MacBook Pro 13 inch unibody (A1278 model) both of which I am fixing up to sell - as such I can download some older OS versions from them.
      So for a bootable installer I made today with OS Sonoma, OS Ventura, OS Mojave, OS Catalina and OS High Sierra. I did exactly the same as he did here, but for OS Sonoma and OS Ventura I made the install media in terminal on my 2023 Mac laptop, then once done ejected the drive, then connected it to the 2015 retina MacBook Pro I currently have, and plan to sell, to then create the OS Catalina, OS Mojave and OS High Sierra install media on using the three relevant sudo commands in terminal.
      It's a pain in the backside having to use two different Mac laptops to create a single USB with 5 different OS installers on it, but it does work.

      They will likely be in your applications folder.
      Open finder.
      On the left hand side, find "Applications" tab, click on that.
      You will see icons for all your installed applications.
      IF when creating the media, you did what most people do like myself, and put the installers into the applications folder, you should see "Install macOS Sierra" for example or the name of any other versions of macOS you created install media for in the applications folder. To delete it just drag the installer icon to the trash icon and then empty the trash.

      Often means the installer isn't in the place you specified in the terminal command.
      I.e the default place that everyone uses is to put the installers into the "Applications" folder on your Mac, however when you download them by default they might not go into the applications folder...
      When you open the .dmg file and click on the .pkg make sure to install the installer to the applications folder. Then in terminal make sure the command in the first part specifies "/Applications" folder, as it should do be default.
      I had the same issue and it transpires I was trying to create OS Catalina bootable USB but I hadn't actually got a Catalina installer in the applications folder - so there's no way it can create the install media since the source files to create the installer don't exist.

    Tell us something new :). I already sell bootable OSX USB Stick with ALL versions! All OSX versions (Tiger upwards) on a SINGLE USB flash drive! Jaguar, Panther, Puma and Cheetah won't work on same format, unfortunately.

      The password is the same password you use to login to the Mac. It's the same as an "Administrator" password in windows, since it requires elevated privileges to write files to a USB.
