On my channel you have seen me test and review a lot of cameras. But in order to keep it financially justifiable I have a rule of only owning two cameras at the time. And if I buy one, I must sell one. That means that I often have to sell cameras that I like and that would have been worth more if I would have kept them.

Hey I actually bought your DP1 from you back in 2019 and it's still alive and well pretty much as it was. If you wanted it back I'm sure something could be arranged as it's just been sat on a shelf recently while I use other cameras. Love your videos as always!

Can I be the transferring point for that DP1? Since seeing it for the first time on this channel I really wanted to try one, but they are way too expensive for a test shootout.

Hi Mattias. Grettings from Brisbane, Australia, where your Leica M8.2 is living quite happily with its sibling, an SL2. Yes, this is YOUR camera, the one I bought from Tommy H. The patina hasn't changed, it still works perfectly and I loved using it around Europe while I was working there.
Funnily enough, I actually started looking for an M8 mostly because I'd watched your videos about it. Little did I know that I'd end up buying the exact camera I'd been watching on RUclips. I've had an M240 (which I wish I'd kept), an M10, and an M9M. This M8.2 is the only M I couldn't sell. It's just too beautiful.
Say hi to Sweden for me. I miss the place a lot!

I may use other cameras at times (I now use Fuji X-E4 for street and discrete) but I don’t think I’ll ever sell my Pentax K-1 and the Limited primes that go with it. AF may not be blinding fast but everything feels right to shoot with and for landscape, architecture and low light the image quality is amazing. If they stop making them I’ll buy the last one and keep it always.
The fact that my original Pentax *istD from 2004 is still going fine also after 17.5 yrs gives me comfort that the K-1 has a long life ahead of it to use into my retirement

Great video Mattias. For me it is the Panasonic GX85 as I really loved the stills and clean video it produced but I had to sell it because I needed funds for a big long term trip I was doing. A few years went by but in my heart I never forgot that camera and to my joy a few weeks ago I came across someone selling an as new body for a great price. So I'm happy to say that I'll be ready for that next big trip with one of my favourite cameras.

An M5, sold for 50% profit after a few rolls of film. I'd have to give x4 the price to buy a clean M5 now. Also a genuinely mint plain prism Nikon F, good luck finding another one of those. The only digital camera I formed any attachment to is the X-Pro1. Used less now but great output. Newer doesn't always mean better.

They sure has the best user interface of all, but their classic AF sensor has not been the best, pretty lousy in fact. it never worked to have it in AF-C mode, as it always lost its focus, while my Nikons (FX, DX and CX) are always used in AF-C mode.
The worst user interface I have ever come across was what plagued Sony cameras for years. I think they now are OK, but for instance the NEXT line's was a total mess!

Hello, I fully agree on the Pentax Kp... I bought one new (the silver one) two years ago with additional battery grip for €799. I will never sell it, especially since I paired it with a HD DA 20-40 Ltd! When I see the prices today for used one, I regret I did not buy a second body at that time. Another body I am a big fan is the Pentax K200D. It is a fantastic body, well build, WR and producing amazing pictures. It is relatively easy to find for a ridiculous price (arounf $100) with less than 20.000 shutter counts.

I sold my first camera, a Nikon F to buy my first digital camera, Canon PowerShot G1 in 2000. I regretted that decision until 2021 when I scored a mint, fully restored and operational Nikon F for less than 300USD. The first was from 1967 and the new one is from 1972.

    • @xmlthegreat

I think to some people it makes sense just not to have things they know they won't use often. I have 2 film cameras and 2 Canon DSLRs, along with an RX-100. I have not shot anything with them in about 6 months, just haven't had the time to. But I wouldn't sell them off or give them away because I can't part with things. However if Mattias was in my position where he doesn't think he will use a camera for a long time then he would rather sell it than it be wasted. Which I understand.
Edit: the rule seems self defeating to me too, but this is just my 2c.

Some people prefer a minimalist philosophy, and don't like owning things they only use once in a while, if at all. In my case, I keep everything I buy, but I make sure that I really want it, and that it fits a desired purpose. My needs don't change much, so I tend to replace something if it stops working. Having said that, there's only so many mail order brides you can bring over before immigration gets suspicious. Wait, were we talking about cameras?

Nikon D40x with an old 16-35mm F2.8 zoom. My first digital camera. For some unknown reason, the landscape shots had this quality, I really liked. A consumer cropped sensor camera, and the full frame zoom lens with the squeaky focusing motor, that together created an eccentric experience.

Nikon D80 with the 'crappy' CCD sensor that was actually insanely nice in the right lighting conditions. You just can't put filmic tones and grain like that on in post production. Also a Pentax fan with their weird 1/6000 shutter and cool colours - always feel like they are trying to give you more for your money and a real nice piece of imaging equipment.

    • @ErikssonTord_2
      @ErikssonTord_2 2 года назад +1

My first few Pentax lenses had CCDs, slow but nice colors. Nowadays the Nikon 1 V1 gives just that feeling, and its noise is so Tri-X! And the colors are just great. The lenses are mostly mechanically dubious, but the 0-30 PD, the 6.7-13 and the 70-300 CX are just great. Optically all the N1 lenses are very good, or better, but sadly a design flaw makes most of them flaw.prone!

The problem with getting an exceptional deal on a camera or lens is it perverts your expectations for the future. The only one I regret letting go was my Hasselblad 500cm. Money was tight back in the early 90s, and although I can now afford one even with today’s prices, I refuse to buy another in this market. I’ll wait until some hipster needs IPA money and then pounce.

I'm happy to read this. I'm trying to get my dad a well kept Minolta AF-S. They're not expensive but still a little difficult to get a good condition one here in Dubai with absolutely all the bells and whistles it used to come with. I found some options on eBay but shipping was a hurdle. We used to have this baby back when we were kids. And while I wouldn't want him to deal with the trouble of buying and developing film in a digital age and with him being nearly 70yrs, that's something I'll figure out soon once our family are able to move in together again. (Adulting, some unfavorable issues back in India and the fact that my older brother has moved to Canada.) But for sure that thing would make us time travel just by the very presence of it in our hands

In my opinion I think this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of digital cameras appreciating/holding their value. As DSLRs are steadily discontinued, the best of the breed will probably be sought after for the foreseeable future. Maybe mirrorless is objectively better, but there's something unique about the DSLR shooting experience I think people will still crave. I know I sometimes prefer looking at the real world rather than a screen when I shoot.

The Olympus E-M10 mk II. I had an original E-M5 too, so when I bought an E-M5 mk II, I decided one had to go. I agonized over the decision for a week an finally I sold the E-M10.2 on the basis of batteries logistics. What a mistake! In the end I disliked the 5.2, which on paper is better spec'ed, but is neither here nor there in reality, sandwiched between the 10 simplicity and the 1 complexity. In the end, the 5.2 to me picks the worst of both.
I regretted my bad decision instantly. Since then I've owned some E-M1s, both original and mk II, great cameras but no replacement for the nimble 10.

one of the only camera that I have ever sold was the first Fuji X100. I sold it because at the time I had no use for it, but that's a decision that I came to sorely regret. I bought it for 2021 and with the X100V hype craze I was able to sell it for 500 (and I was one of the cheapest listings online). The next year after selling it were simply filled with attempts to replace it as an ECD cameras (as I found myself in need of one again).
I went from the Fuji X-T1, to the Lumix LX100 and LX5... none of them were really able to replace the feel of the X100 and its OVF which I really liked and almost exclusively used. I refused to buy another X100 as there was still problems that drove me crazy with it (histrogram metering and the god awful AF performance using the OVF vs EVF or back screen), and the price didn't come down at all.
I was extremely lucky to find someone selling an X100S for 300€ + a ton of extras (inclusing a leather case, leather straps, dual charger, 6 batteries, original box, rope strap + original strap... counting everything in I might have had the camera for a little over 150€) with the caveat that it was sold for parts : the previous owner could not turn the camera on as the switch was stuck, and same thing for the shutter button. It was a huge gamble on my part but with a little of rubbing alcohol and dental floss to remove most of the gunk, and some carefully applied WD40 for lubirification, it works like new now ! The X100S not only fixes all the problems I had with the original (low res EVF, innacurate AF using the OVF, hard to used histogram metering in manual mode), but it's also in black which is my preference over the silver paint of those few first X100 cameras that looked like plastic toys.
I'm definitely not letting that one go and will use it until it breaks. I have no reason to upgrade to any of the newer models.
