In this video we will have a little showdown to see what I currently think is the ultimate all-round camera.
Its been over two years since I made a video where I decided what camera I would pick if I could only have one. But since my photography has evolved I have started to have my doubts and needed to re-evaluate.
Here is the old video: • What if I had to pick ...

I watched all 10 minutes knowing exactly how this was gonna end. 😆 Great video
Exactly, like Mattias is going to tell you what camera to buy so people can then come complain how his insight did not met their expectations.
i knew it too! classic Mattias xD
How did you know. Lol
I love that something Ive never done before is considered "classic" :)
I did it because people claim I have in the past and some even go as far as "always", when in fact, this is the first time :)
Same haha
You're one of a kind and the person who was the reason I picked a camera back up after bring burnt out by corporate work. Great video!
Glad if I could be a part of it!
I ageee and why I bought a griii
I love the way that you prioritize the things that are important. You don't spend the whole time talking about internal specs and talk about the experience and pictures the can be produced. Then you back it all up with the fantastics photos tht you make. Thanks for how helpful your videos are.
I've had my Pentax in storage for the past 9 years. You sir have inspired me to take it out again and play with it. Thank you for reminding me what true value is. I have yet to even experience the joys of my Q. Great video! Thank you Mattias!
LOL! I always love and hate your shoot out videos! But you make the point abundantly clear, it doesn't matter, as long as you love the camera. :)
One of the very few vloggers who makes one to take photos rather than worry about the gear. Keep them coming
I start getting mesmerized by your images and start forgetting about the camera: Isn't that what it is all about anyway? Brilliant as always~!
Bought an X-T1 and a Zonlai 22mm f1.8 because of you and all I want to say is Thank you! for being the most authentic photographer when reviewing cameras
I could watch this video in a 10 times loop. So relaxing 😌
Proud owner of a Pentax Q7 here. I just bought the 01 standard prime last month and I enjoy the compactness coming from the standard zoom's size. It's really fun to shoot with.
Love your philosophy, Mattias! It’s so refreshing and so true!
Luv your videos and philosophy Mattias! Also love your photos and your dog!
Keep the videos coming!!
Loved your dog in into the cameras, my favourite always has been Ricoh, but I am sold on Pentax Q. Thanks for helping me to discover well forgotten but without doubt artful and enjoyable photography companion ❤️👍
All of your videos are super chill and then this epic intro.
I love the first and the second Ultimate camera video
Lovely video as always. The original Fuji X-E1 is my go-to all-rounder. Adapted with my old Konica lenses, it's a joy to slow down and enjoy the process with :)
Konica glass is nice.
My one camera is the Olympus em5 Mark ii. Yeah I know it's not best but with a 12-40 and a 25mm pro it's just about perfect for my travels. Compact, weather sealed and built like a tank which also takes excellent stills.
Genius! And another amazing video of course.
thanks for the effort and sharing. i hope you, yours and gunpowder are well. i am an appreciative subscriber. thanks to you, i have bought/used/sold the ricoh gr2 and the pentax q. i have been looking over the gr3 and still pull out the gx85 but find myself really enjoying the fuji x-t1 after playing/enjoying/selling the x100t. thumbs up.
After Fuji X100T, X70 and X-E2s I fell in love with the functionality and amazing print quality I could pull out of an old Fuji X30 which I now use more than anything else for fun/street shots!
Great video, thanks. (Always love your images ! )
Probably i will never own a camera of this caliber, but it is soo much fun too see your videos
Cool :)
Well done and enjoyable as always.
I love your videos Mattias! Another banger, I think we all knew the result even before clicking on the video :P
That was so much fun!
I love that the Q is still on the list. I have a back up body for mine to maximize the life of it. I have been enjoying my Q since 2014. The GRiii is my fave street shooter, but I often have my q or my MX1 in my bag just in case I need some zoom action.
As always, fun, fair, and message is clear. :)
Sounds like you have an awesome trio there :)
@@gearreallydoesntmatter That trio and my dog keep me sane in this strange time we are in. Just as an aside, when I compare back to back on the MX1 and GRiii, other than snap focus, the MX1 with it's itty bitty sensor still holds up and it has an elegant cool factor to it.
I love my GRiii at 28mm for street photography and recently I’ve been playing with manual lenses adapted to a Fuji X-Pro2, but this video reminds me to dust off my Pentax Q and take it out for a spin :)
You should :)
The best camera is the one that inspires you to go out and shoot! Thanks for the great video
This was perfect. I had an idea it was going to end this way too. Go out and photograph everyone! Be happy with what you've got.
Lolol @ final results . The Man, the Legend, the Poet.
Great review as always, glad to hear you. :)
Would you recommend the Panasonic lx100ii over any of these?
This makes me want to stick a wide-angle prime on my Z6 and just go out and shoot the streets! The joy of photography is just that - finding whatever camera you enjoy using, and going out and taking photos with it.
I totally agree. I think I’ll mount my great-grandfather’s Konica 35mm f2.8 on mine, might I suggest a MIR 24M for yours? Happy shooting!
@@shlawchablaas Thanks, the Mir-24M is in fact exactly what I was thinking! Far and away my favourite lens to be out & about with.
One question, is the image quality good enough on the Pentax to sale your images to stock?
Where did you buy the q7 with all the lenses? I am in Sweden.
You Sir are amazing in your photography and RUclips ability. Glad I've found your channel
Nice to see the Q, it always has a special appeal to me. I held a Q10 briefly and fell in love with it, but never managed to buy it :(
The Q10 is very affordable now days.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter no stock in my country for the last two years :(
International Shipping and customs doubles the price for me. I've been searching for second hand. Hopefully I find one.
As always a great video about the brands and cameras I have too...own the GR III and the XPro 3 as Fuji has the best jpegs around and to make things complete you inspired me to buy a Leica M D used in near mint condition for pure photography...so keep up the good work!
It's a comment related not only to this video but generally to what you do.
I think that one can buy cameras but cannot buy other person's experience.
You speak about your cameras so, I would say, tasty that viewers want to feel the same way :) they want to get that fun and joy from using their cameras. But the thing is that a camera is only one part of this formula - and not the most important one.
So your videos encourage me to shoot more in the first place :) Although I have to admit - these pretty cameras really ask to take them everywhere and use often and thus help to bedome a better photographer.
And I do like that you actively use your cameras and you're not a just a 'specs'-guy without passion to photography as art.
Thank you and good luck in the future!
P. S. I thought there would be MX-1 instead of Q7 :)
I recently purchased a like new black fuji XF10. Love the form factor and fuji photo profiles. Perfect companion to my two XT2s. The take it everywhere camera for a reasonable price. Picked it over gr3
Lol I already know the result without watching it.😂 Great video as always. 📸
Awesome video, I have a Pentax Q that I bought when they first came out and I had a love hate relationship with it, these days I appreciate what it is and the fact I have such an amazing camera to use, I love it and will never sell it
Always interesting, thanks for sharing! Unlike you I could never get rid of a X100 and if I was to keep only one camera, I'd pick up the X100V. There's something about this series that makes it unique and so inspiring and fun to use
It’s very fun to use indeed.
Thanks for the enjoyable video. I'm happy to have both a Pentax Q7 with all of the lenses, and the GRIII. After eight years, the Q7 remains a fun system because it is simply so versatile with all of those focal lengths and full camera controls. GRIII's lens and image quality, though, are unbeatable for pocket-size fabulousness. I'm afraid I can't go in for the Fuji's because my other cameras are a Leica Q and, as soon as they ship, Pentax K-3III.
K-3iii seems awesome.
Great video as always, I really loved owning the GRiii it handles so well, but i sold it as I realised for my personal camera i like to mess around with lenses new and old, so I got a used x-e3 to go with my Panasonic gm5.
With the X-E2 and the 27mm and 15-45mm I only have pleasure, and with the Fringer EF-FX PROII adapter even more, it allows the use of Canon EF and EFs lenses. The 24 and 40 mm pancakes are superb. Maintains autofocus, has an aperture control ring and even EXIF ... it's worth it... Great video tks a lot
I'm between the X-E4 and the GRIII, so I was hoping you'd bring up something that I hadn't considered and would help me decide. Instead I'm more confused than before. Great video!
You can’t go wrong with either. Just decide if you want to be able to switch lenses or not. The rest will work itself out.
Or get both. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(if you want to save money, go with gr3, because then you won't be able to buy any lenses!)
Adding to what Martin said, consider that Fuji is awesome but is not a cheap system. So I think it reduces to: do you have the money to spend on camera gear? Yes? Go Fuji. No? Go GR3.
There is also the posibility that you are not a gear head like many of us and a camera body + 1 or 2 lenses would be enough. That being said, Fuji will also be a great option due to versatility; maybe a good prime for general stuff and a zoom to add more versatility for travel or whatever.
GR3 is also a great device, you can't go wrong with any just consider if you will need to change lenses and what that means.
I´m thinking about buying the xe-4, the xs-10 or the ricoh gr iii.
the fujifilm xs10 doesn`t look thaaat good, but the ibis seems to work rly well!
about your question: do you often think: I wish I was closer to the subject? (maybe closer to an animal where you can`t get close) than buy the xe-4.
do you think you you take ~80% of your photos with a wide angle lens, or do you think it would be annoying to lug around a heavy camera? than buy the ricoh.
(yadayadayada- the best camera is the one you have with you- I´m sure you heard this multiple times, but it`s true!)
another point, if you care about street/people photography: are you comfortable to get in peoples faces? you need to get pretty close to people with the gr iii, and with the fuji xe-4 you could for example buy the fuji xf 35mm f2, (52mm ff) and are farther away. it`s such a hard decision for me aswell! :D
I've owned both, I kept the XE4 primarily because shooting with a viewfinder helps in sunny conditions.
After watching your videos I ordered a GRIII, great videos.
I really love your videos. Like you i do like 28mm on my iphone 7(my main camera) wherein i took a lot of amazing photos with it. I wish, hope & pray that covid will skip you. Continue making spectacular videos mattias. Am ur avid fan here in Philippines.
The king of the allround available camera of 2021 has been crowded 🤭
I love the intro. It made me really want any one of those cameras, so no surprise at who the winner was!
How about Pentax K-01? Would you consider it?
can u compare GRii vs GRiii Positive film colors?
Looks pretty much the same.
Between the XE4 and the X70 (from your previous review of all around cameras) ... which would be the one for you? :)
Thank you for introducing me to the griii I still love using it so much its so fun, a fun lens you should review that I haven't seen much good reviews of is the full frame 7 artisans 35mm 5.6 would love you to review it!
How do you decide which camera to take with you, when you head out? For me it's easier, because i have a really good point and shoot, a crop camera, and a full frame, each with specific use cases for the kind of stuff I do. But you've got like 5 cameras there (and I'm guessing plenty more elsewhere) that could probably fill in for my rx100v
I only own two cameras at the time. A small and a big. Most of the time I only have one. So it’s no issue. I made this video to try and decide which three I’m selling.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Which three did you end up selling?
Great video. It boils down to what you are going to do with the camera, and it really doesn't matter. You probably feel like the GR3 some days and one of the Fujis the next. Or maybe the Pentax peaks your interest to just fiddle with something cool. It amazes me how relevant the 10 year old Pentax is even in today's market. Small, light, brilliant lens lineup and still competitive in image quality. To me it shows how little Japan Camera Inc. has gone in 10 years. Same with Leica. Nothing really new, just more megapixels and features that are either impossible to program in the field or not really needed. Autofocus is probably the biggest game changer these days, but you need a PHD in autofocus options programability to set the damn thing up to work in whatever situation you find yourself in. And you better hope nothing changes in the field at the time of the shoot. I have seen some professionals who have a camera option technician on hand to change the settings on their cameras in the field. They have two or three cameras at the ready, one they are using and one for the technician to set up for the next shot. I don't think you have the time, money, or patience for such nonsense. But you are the professional, I am just an old amateur. Stay Safe and keep making great videos.
GX9 with the 14mm pancake is what I always have with me in the pocket and shoot 95% of the stuff with.
Love the honest opinion
I love the gm5 with the 14.
Love my griii thanks for the recommend been going strong for 6 months
Yeah thanks for showing that Pentax it was a breath of fresh air in its day even today!
I just started shooting in 2020 and I’m venturing into the professional field. I started out with the Olympus system, I loved the color science and the size. I have since moved up from M4/3 to full frame with the LUMIX S5. I love this camera and I’m thinking of getting a second, one for stills and one for video. But even though the S5 is small for a full frame I feel weird doing my street photography with such a big camera or glass. The Pentax is calling me lol I love the size and the glass, it’s crazy you can get a 280+ mm equivalent in such a small piece. And it makes you look and feel like a film shooter lol. I’m on eBay trying to figure out do I want a silver or a custom color way from Japan
Your mental process of pick a camera mirrors (pun intended) my own, lol! Only I've ended up with the Panasonic GM5 and the Canon M6 as my current "perfect" all around camera.
Great shootout!
Olympus Pen epl9 or epl10 no good?
Yay my camera wins! Thanks Mattias 😄
Great video. My favourite won.
Mine to :)
Bought a Q10 for my wife a fews year back, we are still collecting lenses for it. Her favorite is the 06 :)
Awesome present!
Really enjoy all your videos. Would be great if you make videos about your editing process as well. I love the colors of your photos!
I'd be interested to see your thoughts on the Nikon 1 system, given your love for the Pentax Q
I had one already, it was fine but it didn't speak to me like the Q, Samsung mini or Olympus Stylus.
The EVF was cool and I liked the tele lens.
I see what you did there 😎🤘
As usual, Mattias cuts through all the noise and picks the clear winner. I've always felt that the best camera (luckily also one that comes with free lifetime upgrades as long as you use it) is the one that's a half centimeter behind the viewfinder (in the Ricoh's case an arm's length). So pick any one of these winners and go out shooting:
Q if you value versatility on a budget.
X-E4 if you're heavily into selfies and blogs and don't mind paying for versatility in glass.
GR if you wanna be stealthy and nimble on the streets in daytime.
X100V if you want the classic chic and need to take snap portraits against the sun or in lowlight.
Just watched your last one yesterday!
Pure genius
Pentax Q can be a fun system if it developed into a video center camera. People can adapt c-mount lens. I am sure it will be a lot of fun.
GRiii with the wide angle converter is a very complete package at a good price.
I love these videos, I think we share a similar philosophy on cameras, but weirdly I'd never heard of the Pentax Q (where has it been in my life)!
I am very fond of my Pentax Q cameras (I have a bodies and several lenses). However I felt that I outgrew it and wanted a more "serious" camera. I considered the Rico GRIII, but in the end I bought a lightly used X100V. After seeing your review, I am considering looking closer at the E-X4!
lovley review... maybe wierd but my all-round and compact camera is canon m10, since i buy adapter for m42 and canon fd lenses now i can go for older lenses and i love it...For bussiness i still use 6D
The M cameras are very underrated.
Love the ending...
Have some Q's, Q10,Q7,Q-s1 and brought the original complete lens set.. ouch.. and often for fun put a 200mm cosina m42 on the Q for crazy moon shots. Also have a GR (my most used camera expect for sports photography which goes to a K5&K3) but no modern Fuji's.. just the X20 and XF1.. will have to try as I can't see an Epson RDS1 for decent pricing anywhere...
The fun factor counts.. now back to the fp.. as I can't find a QuattroH..
The Q7 looks amazing in yellow.
i can't find pentax mx1 in our country
Yeah I knew how this was going to end 🤣 Good one..!
It’s funny everyone says they knew even though it’s the first time :)
I have the same Q7 in yellow. It is a fun camera.
Hi, if I am poor, is the GR I worth getting? Do you find any difference in image quality between GR I, GR II, GR III?
GR1 and GR2 have identical image quality. Basically the GR2 has WiFi, other than that it’s the same camera. GR3 has higher resolution but the GR1/2 has a flash. So you can’t go wrong with either.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Thank you so much for the reply. I asked you this question on Instagram, would you be so kind to answer it here?
"If I just want a camera that weighs the least (hiking), for taking pictures of mountains, which do you recommend? I am stuck between Ricoh GR1 and a Fujifilm XF10. I only care about image quality/dynamic range, and weight, and they are both close in terms of price, used. Any other recommendations?"
ruclips.net/video/AmPzP9OJIhU/видео.html
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Hi Mattias, thank you for the reply. I think I worded my question poorly. Since you know so much gear, what camera do you think is the lightest in terms of weight, that would also let you capture stunning pictures of landscapes. Kind of image quality / gram.
If you can have just one and one single lens for the x-e4 which would be that?
18mm.
Could have guessed it based on your other videos... 😂
I know how it will end, yet I'm still watching lol
Mattias your videos and the music in your videos are always awesome! You have some favourite artists in the same genre?
No the music I listen to is quite different. Except for Wintergatan and other melodic artists.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter wintergatan is beautiful controlled insanity on so many levels.
Keep up your awesome work!
LOL! It's like collecting Pokemons! Gotta get 'em all!
Cheeky video, Mattias :)
If I shoot portraits or street photography what lens do you suggest for Pentax Q7?
It’s easy to find a kit with the 02 and 06. I would probably start there. 02 if I had to pick one as my first Q lens.
The 06 is my favorite for portraits. I think it's just a touch sharper than the 02, and I mainly shoot the 06 at min zoom.
They are both great lenses though but usually find the 01 and 06 are my combo
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Thanks!
Gee whiz! Ricoh/Pentax should reprise that Q series or maybe join the M43 universe with it! Sharp, cool, etc. I like your gallery photos and had problems guessing which cameras for what pix!LOL! 😆 Thanks for the fun clip!
I agree.
Hey Mathias , you should try the Oly Em5 ii. They can be had for pretty cheap these days
I've probably got an x-e4 waiting for me at Hegethorns next week 😄
Enjoy!
Nice notification for breakfast and before work
Have a good day! :)
Great video as always ... and I have to go back to the Q side of photography. My stylus 1 does not give me more fun than the Q and the n•6 ... I miss the experience with my Q
My question is...X100v or GR3 + XE4?
Good q. I'm thinking X-E3 and GRII!
I would like if you share a thought about lumix GM series and pentax K01, nevertheless, awesome video and gorgeous photo as always...
I have a GM1 in the house since many years. Love it for video and adapting glass. Not so much for general stills since it has a 1/500 maximum mechanical shutter.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter thanks for your reply! I really appreciate it.
I really didnt know the Q lenses were leaf shutters, cool!
Did you ever try the Nikon 1 system? I am tempted by a v1 or v2 and a stack of primes.
I did. It was cool but didn’t stick around very long.
Interesting!
Haha Mattias! Well done. I hope to be as wise as you someday 👍
