Wow what an amazing comment! To be fair the list you posted could be extended. The French Connection (1971) The Godfather (1972) The Exorcist (1973) The Godfather Part II (1974) Jaws (1975) Rocky (1976) Star Wars (1977) Superman The Movie (1978) Alien (1979) That's nearly an entire decade of influential films.
Reeve changed everything about his performance between Supes and Clark. Not a single actor before or since has done that. He shaped what it meant to have a secret alter ego.
The Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies obviously used the Superman movies as the template. Ex: Superman 1: • Hero, at youth, is picked on by high school peers, and uses their powers in such a way as to respond to them • Youthful hero gets a defining speech from adopted father in response to the power-related incident with peers directly before they pass away unexpectedly • Death of aforementioned adopted parent motivates young hero to move to the city and become the superhero from the title • Montage of title hero’s early exploits saving people and preventing petty crimes • Hero saves love interest early on • Hero uses powers to give love interest a thrill ride, which piques their interest • Villain finds information out about the hero, which they will then use to lure the hero into a trap • Villain calls hero to lure them into aforementioned trap • In final act, hero must choose between saving love interest first or saving random civilians first; both heroes choose civilians first, but both heroes end up saving love interest • Movie ends with thrilling and impressive effects money shot of character using powers to navigate Superman 2: • Hero seeks to develop relationship with love interest established in previous movie • Hero cannot both be the self-sacrificing superhero and also have a normal life with a love interest • Hero willingly gives up/loses super powers because of their heart • Both heroes regret giving up their superhero alter ego whenever they see people in serious danger and are unable to help • Both heroes gain their powers back after it appears as though the villain has won and all is hopeless • Both heroes lose initial return battle to villain • Both heroes must get back up again to attack the villain and save the love interest The Superman movie defined the superhero movie genre, and nowhere is it more apparent than in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. Even with the third one, both movies introduce competing love interests and involve an evil version of the superhero. These similarities are seen in all or many of the other best superhero movie franchises as well. Example, the Wonder Woman movies certainly have many parallels between the Superman movies and very obviously used them as the standard as well
The only film my parents could get my brother and I to watch all the way through without getting bored as kids despite the film being about 27 years old at the time and being the much longer television cut as that was the version my dad preferred.
Even though I like Superman 2 more, I still like the first Superman. The montage of him fighting crime and his interactions with Lex Luthor and Lois Lane are awesome. I got to meet Margot Kidder at Port City Pop Con in 2013.
Just subscribed after seeing a few of your videos. This video I keep coming back to a lot; specifically with this year being Superman's 85th Anniversary in the comics and the 45th Anniversary of Superman: The Movie. To me, the film is timeless. It captures, as what John Williams said on one of the DVD documentaries, "what Superman wanted to look like and to be like." 7:56 - I always thought that Brando said he wanted for Jor-El to be a bagel. But I guess that a doughnut can work too. 12:04 - There are three versions (that I know of) of this film: - Original Theatrical Version (1978) - Special Edition Version (2001) and - Extended TV Cut (2017); This cut was the version broadcast on ABC in 1982 and was spread over two nights. I wonder if you have ever gone back to talk about Superman II? Does your channel also talk about movies in general?
@@HackTheMovies That’s great to hear. If someone had a movie to request for you to talk about, can we post the request here on YT, or do we have to mail in a request?

I don't care what anyone else says, or how dated this movie is, Superman the Movie is still my favorite superhero movie of all time. So much heart and cratf went into making this film, and the opening credits is amazing.
"Look, up in the sky!" It's a bird?" "It's a plane?" "No, it's SUPER TONY!" He's relaxing at HACK THE KRYPTON talking about the 1978 "Superman" movie with Super Crystal and Kevin Kent. All be taking down Joe Luther.
I really do love this Lois Lane. She has such a strong personality she doesn't get lost in scenes with a Superman. And we see flaws to her. The quirk that she can't spell, her smoking, etc. It's a good contrast of a very human character with someone flawless.
My grandfather also showed me this. He loved Superman. Now I always think of him whenever I see this movie. Much love. Also No Seinfeld reference Tony? Lol
This came out in my birthyear. My grandparents had it on laserdisc and whenever I went to their house we would watch Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Gumby and Pokey. I must have seen all of them at least 50 times.
1:07:20 No, she's right, Lois didn't realize she had a date with Clark. She got a note saying to meet her there, signed ~A Friend. And when Clark shows up, he's like "I wasn't sure you'd know that note was from me." or something to that effect. But she had interpreted the note as being from Superman, and Superman showed up, so she was correct to interpret it that way. But when Clark shows up she's too swooning to even care about the explanation that Clark had written her the note and she just wobbles out with him.
I dont understand all the hate there is with u guys for man of steel, its a fantastic, beautiful movie in all factors. But, like when it first came out, its not for everyone.

Anne Archer, Leslie Ann Warren, Shirley McLaine, Liza Minnelli, Christina Raines, Barbara Streisand, Natalie Wood, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Stockard Channing, Susan Blakely, April Byron, Carrie Fisher, and Jessica Lange were considered for Lois Lane.
Fun Fact; recalled from the Great Superman Book(published 1978), that while Clark's earth parents were elderly during the early comics, when Superboy showed up in the 60s, it was decided that he should be raised by a younger couple. So rather than just make that happen without comment, a special story was created where an alien visitor; grateful for a favor done for him by the Kents gave them a de-aging formula which did the trick.
A great actor, this was my introduction to Glenn Ford but I have since found many of his classic films. He was married to one of the all time great dancers Eleanor Powell.
So Jessica Hickson was questioning why it took Superman so long to catch the missile. The reason is because they stated that they were testing XK101 missiles as both have a new systems built into them where they can do evasive maneuvers if hey are tracked. I seem to recall in the mid 70's they were mentioning developing a system (which later became to be called the Star Wars Missile Defense system in the 80's) in the news at the time frequently the movie was being developed. It is briefly in the background mentioned in the movie. So this system in the rockets they were testing was to evade a competing Star Wars system that the Russians may be thinking of too. So Superman is having a hard time catching it because of that system. That is the primary reason why they are doing the tests with those missiles as we already had nuclear missiles at the time. It was like when the Nuclear Missiles launched from the Subs were first tested. The test are for testing that new evading system on them. It is why the missile keeps weaving and going up and down. If it did not have that system he would have caught up to it easily.
I’ve been watching this movie since I was two years old and never thought of the ending as Superman traveling through time instead of turning the world’s time back.
Sylvester Stallone, Warren Beatty, Jon Voight, Neil Diamond, Burt Reynolds, Kris Kristofferson, Nick Nolte, Muhammad Ali, Robert Redford, Al Pacino, Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dustin Hoffman, Harrison Ford, Paul Newman, Patrick Wayne, Bruce "Caitlyn" Jenner, James Caan, James Brolin, Lyle Wagoner, Perry King, Charles Bronson, Jeff Bridges, Jan Michael Vincent, Robert Wagner, Christopher Walken, David Soul, and Steve McQueen were considered for the role of SUPERMAN.
I was a baby, when this movie opened in theaters. Somewhere in in Europe while my parents where traveling. They took me to see it, and the opening music scared me so much, I actually hid under the theaters seats. Kinda gross when you think about it. I was only a couple years old. I remember nothing after that.
Jack Lemmon, Edward Asner, Martin Balsam, Walter Matthau, Jason Robards, Lawrence Tierney, Eli Wallach And Charlton Heston were considered for Perry White.
Partially related, the newest episode of Young Justice is better than it has any right to be. We get a new Green Lantern, a deep dive into the Phantom Zone, and even discussion on accepting mental illness. It was pretty great. Also, current arc is very New Genesis heavy, my favorite planet (mostly because of Darkseid). Edit:Just watched the ep, FRANK TALKED ABOUT IT! ^_^ Nice...
I'm pretty sure I remember a scene where his father tells him it's forbidden to influence and go back in time. Therefore, it is a power he knew about and can do it anytime he wants.
1:09:41 I believe the "yellow spandex" line was actually a Mighty Mouse reference. Originally, Mighty Mouse wore a blue & red suit, almost identical to Superman (literally the only thing missing was the yellow belt). So, DC Comics sued Paul Terry, the creator of Mighty Mouse, for copyright infringement, so he changed Mighty Mouse's suit to yellow & red.
He was talking about a line from X-Men. They never mention yellow spandex in this movie. Maybe watch movies before commenting something stupid trying to sound smart. Smh.
It’s fine until the time traveling. Edit: The Kevin Costner tornado scene in Man of Steel is one of the worst scenes in super hero cinema history. I completely tuned out of the movie due to that scene.
But if he saved his father then all the world would know he was an alien from another planet. And then they would have done something bad. I'm not sure what it is but it would have been bad.
Another example of using past people from superhero stuff, is CW's Supergirl. Her father is Dean Cain, and mother is Helen Slater. Dean Cain was Clark Kent/Superman in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Helen Slater played the original Supergirl in the 1984 movie. How much closer can you get, than original Supergirl playing current Supergirl's mother?
Here’s the difference between Superman 1978 and modern day Superhero movies. Today’s Superhero movies are made for comic book geeks and kids as it is specifically targeted. Superman 1978 was made for anyone as it didn’t matter what age you were and whether you ever read a Superman comic in your life.
Tony, you've ruined my fantasy that southern California may one day fall into the ocean. Next you're going to tell me that Volcano starring Tommy Lee Jones would never happen, either.
The budget for Superman 1 and 2 was $109 million before prints and advertising according to a June 1981 New York Times article. This just accounts for Donner's work for which he also filmed 75% of part 2. More costs were accrued on additional material and reshoots for part 2 after Richard Lester took over for Donner in order to receive a sole directing credit for his efforts. Reportedly bringing the final tally as high as $140 million for both films.

Christopher Reeve will always be my Superman, not only for his performance, but for the way he handled the second part of his life. RIP.
Man of Steel in role, character and heart.
Jonathan Clark's tornado death was the dumbest idea since Alfred let Vicky Vale into the Batcave.

• Montage of title hero’s early exploits saving people and preventing petty crimes
• Hero saves love interest early on
• Hero uses powers to give love interest a thrill ride, which piques their interest
• Villain finds information out about the hero, which they will then use to lure the hero into a trap
• Villain calls hero to lure them into aforementioned trap
• In final act, hero must choose between saving love interest first or saving random civilians first; both heroes choose civilians first, but both heroes end up saving love interest
• Movie ends with thrilling and impressive effects money shot of character using powers to navigate
Superman 2:
• Hero seeks to develop relationship with love interest established in previous movie
• Hero cannot both be the self-sacrificing superhero and also have a normal life with a love interest
• Hero willingly gives up/loses super powers because of their heart
• Both heroes regret giving up their superhero alter ego whenever they see people in serious danger and are unable to help
• Both heroes gain their powers back after it appears as though the villain has won and all is hopeless
• Both heroes lose initial return battle to villain
• Both heroes must get back up again to attack the villain and save the love interest

I'm not sure what it is but it would have been bad.
i really should rewatch it 25 years later
also never saw the sequels
Another example of using past people from superhero stuff, is CW's Supergirl. Her father is Dean Cain, and mother is Helen Slater. Dean Cain was Clark Kent/Superman in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Helen Slater played the original Supergirl in the 1984 movie. How much closer can you get, than original Supergirl playing current Supergirl's mother?
I wonder why they didn't use Teri Hatcher instead of Helen Slater. That would make more sense.
Tony's right. Fact checked and correct on the story version in Sci Fi magazine 1933. They decided on a hero after the publishing.
I’m on Frank’s side about the Krypton scene
I actually really like Tony's take on the Fortress of Solitude.
I hadn't considered that it was there all along but, i like it.

Did Crystal just low key admit that she thought NYC floated on water? “I have a friend…” Riiiiiiiiight, “a friend.”
Haha I feel like would be a lot easier if I was that dumb. Unfortunately it was a friend.
