I had enjoyed Superman Returns for what it was worth. Brandon Routh, in my honest opinion, had done a good job playing as the man of steel even honoring the late Christopher Reeve in terms of performance.
Plus on the sign note it was good to see him again during the events of the CW crisis on infinite Earths as the Kingdom Come Superman, which he looked like he was ripped from the comics.

Anyone that considers themselves a Superman fan that thinks they know what Tim Burtons Superman film with Nic Cage would have been like based on photos on the internet and rumors seriously needs to do themselves a favor and watch the documentary Tony is talking about. “What Happened? The Death of Superman Lives” is a great documentary that actually cuts through the nonsense and gives you a better understanding what that film would have been. Would it have been a great film? Who knows, but the idea that it was veering off a cliff and becoming the fanboy train wreck everyone assumed is wildly wrong. Seriously give the doc a watch if you can. Also the Tim Burton interview is filmed so badly because it wasn’t planned, Jon Schnepp the docs director got the interview at the last minute while in Europe and took advantage of the limited time he could. Originally Burton wasn’t going to be in it at all.

I remember liking this movie when I saw it in the theater, but the more I thought about it the more I realized it was almost an exact beat for beat remake of Superman: The Movie, and that's why I liked it initially. If Superman: The Movie didn't exist prior to Returns I would like it a whole lot more; as it stands, Superman: The Movie is and always will be my favorite comic book superhero movie.

      @Tom_Van_Zandt 3 месяца назад

@rayfriedrich5224 I'm glad to hear you say that. I will always contend that 1978's Superman: The Movie is the best comic book superhero ever made, and it is the blueprint upon which every superhero origin story has followed thereafter. You don't have to agree that it's the best one. In fact, I would probably guess you're more a fan of the modern movies, especially the Nolan Batman series. I just happen to love it because it was pretty much the only superhero movie when I was little, and it comes with a lot of nostalgic baggage for me. However, there's no denying that it created the film origin story of a superhero.

I thought Brandon Routh did a great job as Superman. I was a little confused when it said Superman was gone for five years since 1980, and yet the present day is 2005. The plane rescue was fantastic. Kevin Spacey was still good as Lex Luthor.

I enjoyed SR initially, still don't hate it, but most of the casual fans that I knew didn't realize it was a loose sequel to Superman 2. You had the flashback of Krypton exploding, then the rocket landing in Smallville, then an adult Clark get out. I knew going in it was a loose sequel reboot, but it confused a lot of other people. Would have been curious to see Singer's Superman sequel, which he said would be like his "Wrath of Khan". Alas, I don't see that happening.

I have a similar nostalgic reaction to this film like "Hulk" (2003). There's a lot to enjoy in this movie. Unfortunately, upon rewatching it, the story/plot/character issues are more apparent. There was a lot of cut footage from this movie which could have have helped it. I'd really be down for an extended director's cut one day. A lot of effort went into this movie's screenplay and production, so its disappointing to not have the final product seem incomplete. Its an enjoyable and well made film, but its not without its questionable creative decisions.

The biggest problem with this film is it put in too many homages to Superman the Movie. Superman Returns feels less like a new story and more like a soft remake of Superman the Movie. Christropher Reeve passed away two years before Superman Returns was released. I get that Brian Singer wanted to make the film serve as a tribute to Reeve's legacy however a unique script would have been much better. The lack of a significant battle between Superman and a challenging foe is quite telling. I'm sure the plan was to remedy this in a sequel. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
Kate Bosworth was miscast in this film. She is supposed to be Margot Kidder's Lois however, she lacks the charisma and charm needed to fill that role. Brandon Routh was perfect casting to play Christopher Reeve's Superman. The same effort that went into casting him should have been applied when selecting an actress to play Lois.

Regarding the suitcase, I'm pretty sure there's some dialogue about how Clark is looking for a place to stay so I always assumed it was some of his personal stuff and he was storing it there since he didn't have a home.

I don't care much for this movie now. It's very flawed, and the love triangle story with a son Clark abandoned was especially terrible. But I have to admit, hearing the John William's theme in a new Superman movie on the big screen when I was just 10 years old was a pretty big deal for me, and a great experience I don't think I'll ever forget. As a whole, the movie doesn't work, but it definitely has its moments.

so I hadn't seen this in 10 years or so and in 2018 I sat down with it and as an adult (came out when I was 10) realized my problem with it. It's basically an argument for why traditional episodic stories suck. Comics, tv, etc. It always has to return to status quo. This movie makes the case that if you remove superman and the status quo, life actually goes forward meaningfully for these people. Lois is in a happy marriage, Jimmy's moved up, even Martha fuckin Kent has a boyfriend. Superman shows back up and for the first time his world has moved on. Granted he has to stop lex's bullshit but really besides that all he does is show up and fuck up Lois' marriage lmao this was my most anticipated movie ever as a kid, and I liked it besides I was pissed at the lack of action supes is my favorite and I always wanted him to kick some ass in a movie, and eventually Snyder gave me that at the cost of everything else lol I like that movie but entirely superficially. But coming back to this movie, I don't hate it. It's fine I just feel like I don't like what its saying or I entirely miss the point it's making. I like a lot about it, and its a great looking movie, just a missed opportunity. I like man of steel more for superficial action turn my brain off I finally got to see Superman fight and the stakes were what I'd imagine a superhero fight in a city would be, but this is a much better movie overall. Both are better than flyby would have been that script could give a fan aids. Krypton never blew up, luthor is an x files dude who is secretly a kryptonian, jor el and Clark die and meet in kryptonian heaven it's a mediocre elseworlds plot that would have made a infuriating movie

The problem with Superman Returns is Singer was trying to make the Donner world at a time when People wanted Nolan. Which is interesting because fast forward to 2013 and my dude Snyder brought his slick style to a darker/edgier Nolan type world and people cried out how Superman can’t be dark. Btw guys, I grew up on Smallville and it’s still my all time favorite superhero show. We can just agree to disagree on this video 😅.

This movie was okay for me, but really the stuff i liked about it are just the stuff that reminded me of the old Superman films, especially the Marlon Brando dialogue like his classic "They can be a great people" speech used in the teaser trailer and that whole "Son becomes the father" bit, too.
Without that stuff from the old films, I'd probably would rather watch Smallville.

The Spider-man movies are a little different, with regards to rehashing the origin being rehashed.
As I understand it, the license Sony has restricts them to a trilogy, and if they stray beyond certain limits then the rights revert back to Marvel. Lord knows about now but that was the case for ages

Glad to see Frank the hot Italian Stallion on the podcast today. What I hate is that Bryan Singer blamed Brandon for the movie tanking. Um, Singer needs to take a good look at himself an actor is as only good as what he's given to work with. So if Singer should blame someone it's himself I mean he cast Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane & she was horrible she didn't have the fire & sass like Teri Hatcher & Erica Durance's Lois. Even Amy Adams did a better job as Lois than her.

My problem is that it doesn't look like he put planet kryptonite in a stable orbit, he just threw it up out the atmosphere and if you do that eventually it's going to come back down again. So unless he pushed it away with enough delta v to get it to leave orbit (which is doubtful since it looks like he barely made it out the atmosphere) in a few hours time the earth is going to have a very bad day.
