WOW! Allison! I was introduced to The Smiths in the mid 80's by a friend who discovered their music when they were just becoming popular in the states. I fell in love with Johnny Marr's happy, catchy, upbeat guitar styles and Morrissey's dark, forbidding lyrics. What a combination! Over the years I have searched high and low to learn how to play some of my favorite Smiths tunes. RUclips has been a good resource although many of the tutorials are severely lacking. That is until now! Thanks to you my repertoire of Smith tunes has grown and improved drastically. You have such a great interpretation, great breakdown and great lessons. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and keep them coming!
I have struggled to get this song down for such a long time, and I swear you are a SAVIOUR. Your teaching style made the fingerings so much easier to understand and for that, I thank you.
Another excellent lesson plus a refreshing change to hear "what works for me". It may not be note perfect but for many its just what we want, me included. Thank you Allison.
Thanks Allison. What a clear lesson and explanation. Always wanted to know how to play the main riff from this. Just about got it down but sore fingers now.
This is the first video of yours I've watched and the lesson is great - I'd tried to learn this song before but you were much clearer in how you taught it - thank you!
Still the best resource for learning all these Smiths songs! Thank you so much for all these videos. Smiths songs are so hard because of all the guitar layers on the records. And also because they're just tricky to play, a lot of the time. I know these videos were made quite a while ago, but you really did a great job with them.
Thank you Allison. I was a huge Smiths fan in the UK in the mad 80s. Although I've always had guitars I never got round to playing Smiths stuff. It's 7:30 pm and thanks to you I've learnt this in less than an afternoon. Thank you for your patience in sharing this. Guitar retailers should be kissing your feet.
Great lesson - thanks for really slowing it all down and showing the improv on the chorus - most of the time I am the only guitarist as well and I really appreciate having to try to replicate 2 or more guitars by myself. Cheers!
Allison, this is AWESOME! I've been a Smith's and Johnny Marr fan since the early 80's and I've always wanted to learn this tune but could never get through all JM's goof ball complexity. Thank you for explaining it in a way that makes it easy to understand! I'm taking my 17yo guitar playing son to see JM play this week at a really small venue. If we get the chance to talk to him, I'll tell him you say "Hi".
@@kevinsmoon3257 there is a method on RUclips where you can slow a lesson right. Down by clicking the dotted line in the top right hand corner of the screen....hope it helps
hey, top notch craic man, cheers, helped me get used to it, still not quite JM bit then no one is. Shame you couldn't come and play the you are the quarry nights in camden, sadly now defunct.
Excellent! I wish all of RUclips's instructional guitar videos were this good-there's way too many with out-of-tune, out-of-rhythm playing. I'd love to see her take on Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now...
Very nice! And thx for simplifying it a bit. Some people seem to think you have to play 100% like Johnny plays on the records to be "true". But like you said, he always made tons of overdubs and layers. So unless you have a few extra arms that is pretty impossible.
I've been playing it without the capo. That's why my hand hurts. Heaven knows I'm miserable now but what difference...eh I'll stop there. That's a lovely Gibson, nice-looking pickups, warm tone with "bright" tops. Good stuff, I'm going to use your "solution" for playing the chorus with just one guitar.
@levissonclash it is a common misconception that every Smiths song involves a Rick 12... The most common is this charming man that in fact was John Porter's telecaster. Johnny Marr does them all these days on stage on his signature jaguar and sounds killer. The real secret is in the playing and she sure can play these songs!
thomas derouault Dead right, he was a production genius from an early age , he layers guitars on top of each other to make a tapestry of sound thats why he is hard to copy.
Allison, I've been really enjoying all of your guitar tutorials! Great breakdowns and excellent playing! Just curious to know: What pedal are you using for your distortion? Nice, clean, articulated tone without being over the top! Please keep these videos coming! Cheers!
Many thanks. My fave song - the John peel version got me started into the smiths. I've always had trouble with the timing of this song's Asus to restart of the riff. It's like my brain's hardwired to play something different. Probably bound to muscle memory given I've been playing it wrong for so long. Still working on it but this tutorial really helps as the tab doesn't give the flow.
I just noticed that you hold the pick with your fingertips - not the side of your index and bottom of your thumb. Is that for all of your picking or just at certain times? I naturally default to that though I've heard many recommend the other grip. Thanks for another great lesson!
This is so difficult to play. I sussed it after realising this - 8 open A's 3 C's (not including the hammer-on) 2 D's 2 open A's 1 pause This amounts to 16 counts. Listen to it slowly (using settings) and listen to the above bass notes - Works for me - the swing is very tuff though
Thanks for the great tutorial. I am playing this normal tuning but when I play along with the song its feels like all the recorded notes are a step higher? Perhaps just the effect of the distortion?
Henry Burdon I’ve noticed this when playing along with any smiths tunes.. even with a capo you have to tune your guitar and bass up like half a half step. I forgot why it’s like that but there’s some technical reason.
WOW! Allison!

I never thought I'd learn this song! Thank you!!
Very well done. You know your stuff, and teach very well.
modfather1965 So do you lad! Taught me loads of great stuff!
Now and then when i recall to play Smiths songs i check your tutorials, very usefull and simple made/explained. Thanks Allison!
Very good video, thank you. So far I've spent 2 hours going over the verse riff! Working my way through it. Thanks for making it so clear.
Fabulous lesson! Thank you Allison, you're a great guitarist and a great teacher!
I have struggled to get this song down for such a long time, and I swear you are a SAVIOUR. Your teaching style made the fingerings so much easier to understand and for that, I thank you.
Again, a great lesson. It the first time I see the chorus played like you do, it sounds good.
ALLISON, thank you so much! Awesome break down, been wanting to play this for ages!
Another excellent lesson plus a refreshing change to hear "what works for me". It may not be note perfect but for many its just what we want, me included. Thank you Allison.
First Smiths song I ever heard. 1983. It still ROCKS. Thanks for showing us how to play it.
Good teaching style. Killer riff that I used to be able to play but, this has certainly refreshed my ageing memory.
Definitely going to give this a try. Thanks so much for sharing your guitar lessons, Allison!

Thanks Allison. Really enjoyed your tutorial. You’re a natural!😘
Excellent tutorial. This riff is quite tricky, and you deconstruct it very well.
Thank you so much for this. You just made my day!
Killer riffage!

Fab lesson, really well played and explained 👏👏👏 looking forward to committing this one to memory!
Your tutorials are incredible. I've learnt nearly all the songs I know from you.
Great lesson - thanks for really slowing it all down and showing the improv on the chorus - most of the time I am the only guitarist as well and I really appreciate having to try to replicate 2 or more guitars by myself. Cheers!
You make the best tutorials! Thanks!!
Cheers Allison. Cracking detailed tutorial.

you've been a huge help, thank you
"Here's the verse, slowly".
Me at top speed lol
shaolin1derpalm practice it slow and then slowly start speeding up that’s how you get faster my friend cheer!

@Hendrix Mario a tip. You're not my mommy
Just change the playback speed of the video to. 5 or 1/2 speed
Thank you and well done!
Fabulous tutorial 👏

Apple for teacher.
Thanks, great tutorial.
Thanks Allison, this goes really well in quarantine :)
Great lesson. This is a tricky song. I’ve rewound the first 4 minutes or so a few times now.
Beautiful.
Superb. Thanks !

Thank you so much!
Great lesson!

thanks a lot...... waiting so long ;)
its actually interesting that you use a Les Paul to play a lot of Smiths stuff, but then again I'm playing this with my SG
Good stuff. Marr would approve!
Thank you
Aha that rest at the end of the main riff is genius. Pure Johnny Marr.
You rock!!!
A pretty lady who loves the Smiths and has guitar skills ..... I'm in love :)
Thanks for the lessons.;)
Learning after not playing for a while my fingers are strangers to me 😩🎸 but perseverance thanks
Looking forward to something with the acoustic 12 string back there...
Hi Allison, great tutorial as always! How do you keep clean that gold hardware, especially the PUs?
BRILL!!!
Is that a les Paul classic antique from about 2008?
I have the sunburst version.
Great lesson. Such a tough riff to get right
Love your style of teaching these fine toons. Are you bringing This Charming Band toUK ever?
I love you Allison

Allison Bennett - Nice playing and video.
Can I ask the exact make model of your capo? Thanks.
A boa e velha Gibson...
May I ask what's the model of that Gibson les paul??
I just noticed that you hold the pick with your fingertips - not the side of your index and bottom of your thumb. Is that for all of your picking or just at certain times? I naturally default to that though I've heard many recommend the other grip. Thanks for another great lesson!
Is it tuned to play along with the original? Thanks :-)
Why am i thinkin 'Run to You' by Brian Adams... apart from the fact that a capo is used on the 2nd also...🤔🤷🏻♂️😊
I'd like to see u and ur band play. Do u play in OC or LA
Been playing this song for years I always missed out the dsus2 part and now
I just can’t play it. Fml
Can you do one for fall of the leafe (: you look a bit like charismatic voice
Cool. Teaching the way I learn. None of the music theory mumbo jumbo that's usually added to sound cool and teaches little. 👍
Excellent player and beautiful lady!
Its great to see Americans taking interest in The Smiths!
Matty Robinson People all over the world listen to the smiths
Americans took interest in the Smiths over 30+ years ago!
