As soon as I saw Kung Fu Hustle, I instantly thought, "Man, whoever did this, could probably make a sick Dragon Ball movie." Shame the producer just saw dollar signs, and had no love or respect for the source material. However... not ALL hope is lost. I heavily suggest all DBZ fans check out Man of Steel. That, is pretty much a DBZ movie, and the closest we'll be getting for a while. God, were the fight scenes in that movie great.

Those aren't bad character portraits. They're transformations. You know how normal Dragon ball games will have Base form Goku, Super Saiyan Goku, Super Saiyan 2 Goku e.t.c? Well this game has Base form Goku, looking slightly to the left Goku, Staring angrily at Apple Goku, and of course Fart-Face Goku.
As a matter of fact, I DO remember Mai. She works with Pilaf. A very major character in Dragon Ball. They are the ones who revive Piccolo and work for him. So her role is pretty similar. They just don't have Pilaf or Shoo.

Goku named his first son after his adoptive grandfather, Gohan, yes there were guns in Dragonball, and Piccolo used to be the evil half of Kami (but not the Piccolo we know and love, that's Piccolo Jr., who was shot out of Piccolo's mouth as an egg when Goku killed him) so he wasn't always Piccolo.
Actually Grandpa Gohan is mentioned in the filler episode about Gohan's 12th birthday. Chi-Chi and Ox king were trying to come up with a name for their kid/grand kid and Goku was more worried about eating. So when he was about to go out Chi-Chi started yelling at Goku saying something along the lines of "DIDN'T GOHAN TEACH YOU ANY MANNERS?" and Gohan liked that name.
It's funny you make the point about the character portraits, but 90% of anime games do this. Granted some of them have voice acting, but games like the Tales series will have talking head character portraits even though the models are RIGHT THERE ON THE SCREEN. And don't even get me started on visual novels/ dating sims. Most of them don't have voice acting and you're lucky if you have two or three variants to character portraits.
The best part about the portraits (if you can call them that) is when, like Yuri said, Goku couldn't care less. Taking "Not Giving a F*ckness" to a whole new level!

I can't confirm this but I'm guessing the reason this was PSP exclusive is because the Shin Budokai series was PSP exclusive as well and by the same company. They were making other games for the Next Gen consoles so they threw this garbage at the PSP. It makes sense in my head so it must be true. :O
i'm going to give some background on a few things. first off, dragon ball evolution was not based on dragon ball z, it was based on the original dragon ball. second, mai was a character. she was one of emperor Pilaf's (the first antagonist) servants. in the original dragon ball, king piccolo was able to spit out mini demons which is what i think fu lum was meant to be. but i can't explain fuller and the other guy.
The plot was poorly executed, and some stuff didn't make any sense. The game took itself way too seriously and expected the us to take it seriously, while throwing out some terrible dialogue. I fully agree about the characters and personalities (except for Phineus, he was awesome)
Your concept of how they designed the portraits is correct. The term is called "rotoscoping." Digitally tracing over photographs to get that uber realistic painted look.

This Goku looks more like what I'd expect Gohan to look like

The plot was poorly executed, and some stuff didn't make any sense. The game took itself way too seriously and expected the us to take it seriously, while throwing out some terrible dialogue. I fully agree about the characters and personalities (except for Phineus, he was awesome)
Gameplay-wise it wasn't bad. Reminiscent of the old Budokai games albeit more technical. However, the IP it is based off of is BOOTY SWEAT.

Your concept of how they designed the portraits is correct. The term is called "rotoscoping." Digitally tracing over photographs to get that uber realistic painted look.
