System: MSX2/MSXturboR
Media: 736KB ROM cartridge
Year: 1989
Company: Compile
NOTE: as stated by some users, it seems that there is somewhere a set of Python scripts that glue all 3 original disks together into a single file. It also seems that someone from the former Compile company asked the author of those scripts to remove them. The version shown in this video has nothing to do with those scripts. It has been manually built by using custom assembly code and no other third-party script or tool (except for the Team Bomba's BitBuster routine).
Aleste 2 (Copyright © 1989 Compile) is an excellent MSX2 game that suffered from some issues (all of them have been fixed in this release):
-Disk changing during the game was a pain-in-the-neck
-A bug prevented the game to start in the right mode after watching the intro Demo (it started in the hardest difficulty level).
-The game suffered from severe slowdowns due to the poor performance of the Z80 CPU. The game has been fixed to use the MSXTurboR R800 CPU when available, thus keeping the full framerate during the whole gameplay.
-FM sound routines have been fixed to support the MSXTurboR properly.
-A bug could potentially cause some corrupt graphics during the demo scenes in R800 mode. Игры
Thank you for doing this! This is a game changer, really, it feels like a completely different shooter. Took me a while to get it working on RetroArch, but it was well worth it. No slowdown, no annoying disk changing, fewer bugs.
It's amazing! I always wanted to see this game optimized.
I think I did something wrong, though; my rom ended up with 1MB in size, and not 736Kb... 😓
See if last pages are filled with FF FF FF FF FF... in such case you can safely trim them.
@@msxwiki Tried several times, followed the instructions to the letter and every time the result is a 1MB rom that stops at the end of level 4... 😓
@@honved_77 send me your ROM. I'm curious about what's going on with it. Send to msxlegacy@msxwiki.org
Nice! Could the screen split at the top be tweaked as well?
I think so. I will try to move the line interrupt 1 or 2 lines in the R800 mode. I think it is feasible with a very simple patch.
the author was asked to take his pythons scripts they combined the 3 disk images offline. It’s unclear who asked him but I have a feeling it might have been what is left of compile.
What scripts?
I think there is some misunderstanding here about this ROM version...
@@msxwiki Richbit made this version right?
@@Vampier No. I made it: gitlab.com/msx-related/aleste2-rom
Could be M2 Co. Ltd.
Hey. How do you get into the difficulty/sound test menu with this ROM? Holding the Select key (F7 in OpenMSX) while booting doesn't work like it does with the disk version. Thanks!
Yeah, can't seem to fix the difficulty. Because even easy mode in this game is nearly impossible and on default difficulty I can't even finish stage 1
@@MarcusSparchs This version is A LOT more difficult due to the lack of slow-down. Compile obviously balanced the game with the slow-down in mind. I tried playing this version emulating a TurboR, but then went went back to the normal 3 disk version on an MSX2. In the normal version, I can at least get to the stage 4 boss before I start abusing the emulator save states. With this one, as you said, even the first stage is tricky to get through. Still an awesome game though. The graphics and sound are almost 16-bit and the gameplay is pure Compile.
It does work exactly as the disk version. I have just tested on my MSXTurboR. Press [SELECT] and FIRE at the title screen. It should take you to the SoundTest/difficulty menu. If not, review your emulator configuration (I have tested this on my real MSXTurboR FS-A1GT machine).
I don't think they balanced anything. They did not even care about the terrible bug that makes the game start in the hardest difficulty level if you have previously watched the demo, but in the easiest one if you start the game disk without using the Intro disk. Some people believed for decades that it was a "feature" but it isn't actually: it happens due to a incorrectly initialized variable and Compile overlooked that (what, in my opinion, proves that they didn't pay attention to the difficulty balance at all).
One of these cracks, if you keep the keys J A M, pressed whilst the cartridge is loaded it will give you infinite lives
Amazing!!
Where can I download the rom file already patched?

@@msxwiki This rom dont work in bluemsx or retroarch. How to make run this rom?
@@lucien_br Have you set the mapper type correctly? The game uses a standard ASCII 8KB mapper.
@@msxwiki Oh my god. I did it work. Thank you very much. It is a dream! Looks like christmas Aleste 2 without slowdown and without sprite flicker.
@@lucien_br Enjoy! And remember that if you still have your real MSX machine, you can order this version in cartridge format.
