Kobo Forma | Killer Kindle Oasis Rival

- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2018
- Unboxing, full tour and hands-on review of the new Kobo Forma, Kobo's most premium reader of 2018 and possible the best eReader we've tested.
Like Amazon's Kindle Oasis, the Forma boasts a spacious and sharp screen - 8-inches, with 300ppi. That rugged plastic frame is fully water resistant and drop resistant, while the ergonomic design is ideal for comfortable clutching for long periods.
The Kobo Forma can hold thousands of eBooks, coming in 8GB and 32GB flavours. You can download new books direct from the Kobo Store, which boasts an impressive 6 million titles - making it nicely stocked just like the Kindle Store. And with Overdrive on board, you can lend books straight to your eReader too.
So far we're certainly enjoying the Forma, which is one of our favourite eReaders of 2018. Let us know what you think in the comments below and subscribe for more tech reviews!
I have both and only got around 4 hours reading out of the Oasis. I easily get 10 to 12 hours reading on the Forma. I didnt like screens on earlier Kobos and preferred Kindle. However with this its the Forma I turn to all the time. So far its been rock solid reliable.
'Dead Dogs, that sounds good'
John Wick furiously reloading
Finally someone mentioned the integration to over drive!
The 8" screen is beautiful, but as a rival of Kindle, it should lower the price to slowly scooch into the market
As far as I know, Kindle devices are cheaper because they support less formats and only Amazon's proprietary DRM, while the high price of Kobo devices are, in my opinion, a small price to pay for access to a more open ecosystem, including support for industry standard* Adobe PDF/EPUB DRM which allows users to buy DRM protected books not only from Kobo, but also Play Books and other sources, whereas on Kindle, DRM protected books can only be purchased from Amazon.
*At least I think so
Mic Geneva considering Kobo e-readers appear to be made to throw away in a month, it is my hope that they blaze out fast. Very unhappy customer here; buyer beware.
Only the amazing ComfortLight feature in KOBO makes me change from kindle, light Blue filter is so lovely
The oasis 2 is good but the Kobo Forma is fantastic I have both and the feel with the soft rubberized skin, comfort level with the wide range brightness control and performance of the Kobo along with the effortless library book borrowing feature makes it the real winner.
Herbertwest ReAnimator what are you doing with both .. I’ll take one off you Lool.
If you can show us how the light looks when dark, that would be great.
You do know e ink displays don't even need back light turned on in bright sun?
No shit
Two years later and it's still the same price?! Is it worth buying at this point?
Honestly, that’s totally up to you. If you’re worried about it being “obsolete” on purchase, then maybe wait for the next release, or the next release, or the release after that. If it helps, here’s the current Kobo lineup with each model’s release date:
Budget: Kobo Nia - $100 USD - Released in July 2020 (6” screen, medium resolution, 8GB, no water resistance, no screen light)
Mid-tier: Kobo Clara HD - $120 USD - Released in June 2018 (6” screen, high resolution, 8GB, no water resistance)
Upper mid-tier: Kobo Libra H₂O - $170 USD - Released in September 2019 (7” screen, high resolution, 8GB, waterproof)
High-end: Kobo Forma - $250 USD - Released in October 2018 (8” screen, high resolution, 8GB/32GB, waterproof)
I'm wondering this as well. Still using micro USB and USB-c is long overdue
It's sad that these devices don't allow you to insert a microsd card in it. Come on Kobo, give us this feature!
Very true, especially if you want to carry around PDFs, audiobooks etc
@@TechSpurt I have about 300 books mostly epubs, add the number of PDFs, then all the mangas that 32gb isn't going to be enough. What I don't get is why they're eliminating sd cards as a feature. They're quite an essential feature to have. I get they want us to pay for the product with higher storage but that's a low not including the feature entirely.
The old Kobo Aura H2O had a microSD card slot.
Waterproofing and design change. If no one does it, then why should Kobo bother investing their money on that? That's the main reason. Though I want a microSD slot too, internal storage is not enough for me :(
@djazz you are right, i have the kobo aura 1st edition and it has a microSD slot. Good ol' days kobo. it has been 2 years now and my kobo is going strong. I wouldn't buy kobo forma though, it is too big to my liking and the page flipping button takes so much space... It would be a lot better if the new button was on the side not in the front side
This is a good unboxing and feature video. How has the Forma held up since you bought it? If you've been using it for nearly a year, how do you like it compared with other e-readers? Thanks.
Freaking amazing review! Up to today, I wanted an Oasis. Changed my mind))
Are most books available on both ecosystems? Theres no sort of exclusivity nonsense with certain publishers or authors? Kobo devices seem much nicer than the kindles
Nice device......not so keen on the price though.
Definitely a shame they couldn't make it a bit cheaper, undercut the Kindle Oasis
When you buy a product, you also but their brand, support, and ease of use.
Yes. And you are also supporting the way they treat their staff and employees. That’s why I left Amazon.
Am I the only one, who noticed lines on the screen?? like what you get with amoled screens without DC dimming?
It took a lot not only from Kindle but also from PocketBook probably the most underrated eReader. Great device anyway but I'm fine with my Kobo Clara HD 😉 Anyway thanks for a great review!
i want an e-reader that isnt super slow. cant wait for technology to advance
I love this, but I spent to much money on the kindle shop already to switch...
Hmm, normally I read the books only once, so in my point of view the past doesn't count as much and a switch should not be a problem reading forward.
“Don’t Cling to a Mistake Just Because You Spent a lot of Time Making it.” - Aubrey De Graf
The Kindle shop sucks. I would rather get good books. I have read only a few good books on the Kindle shop and almost all of the programming books are trash
i always back up my kindle books so i can use them with any device or app
It is possible and even pretty straightforward to back up and dedrm all your kindle ebooks with Calibre then convert them to epub (the conversion is mostly seamless). Then you handle your library and devices with Calibre which is the best software for the job anyway !
Kobo h20 is good enough but for comics, manga, pdf’s and mags definitely get the forma. The forma even beats the oases in that department. I love my h20 but returning it for the forma to read Manga.
It's not color tho
Can you use the device as a frisbee? Would be nice after a bit of reading at a park followed by some frisbee . . .
Haha, it does spin in a very satisfying manner
sure. works great i suggest you
try
did you notice any issue with the power botton on the kobo forma?
Excellent Review. Thank you. I'm buying one and wanted to check first.
How's the built-in translator? I read a lot in Spanish on my Kindle and the touch-to-translate is such a dope feature.
Ah I didn't realise you were an author! I'll have to check out your work.
Thank you... Great review. I might grab one after seeing this.
still no translation option ?
the backlight led is using pwm, what is this company thinking?
hmm considering buying one, but the backlight flicker is putting me off, you can see it in the video. I know that its not perceivable to the naked eye, but it bothers me that its there.
Yep, very nice. But then I think of my Kobo Glo that developed a small square area of squiggly lines on the display and the Kobo support desk, outsourced to somewhere in India, told me it cannot be repaired, go and buy a brand new Kobo. Be warned...
Do many libraries in the UK support overdrive?
Best E-reader overall better than kindle because it's open format reads almost everything. Confortable on both hands and horizontal view. Nice screen diagonal looks like real average book size, you can switch up/down buttons and also it's touch screen. It's not heavy or unconfortable at all like other 8, 9, 10" inches readers; and it's not a silly toy like 6". Get a coupon before buy it. KOBO!! Make it in colors!! and cover all the market. simulate tinted leather Dark Red, dark blue, brown Like antique book covers
Will wait for an update to the larger screen aura one which I love! Only two features I wish they would add :
1) Ability to highlight text and add notes in ePub files.
2) Support for audiobooks.
Otherwise the aura one is a perfect device imo.
Omg I love this thing. I’m totally selling my Aura ONE and buying this baby♥️
Nathalie did you? Do you find it better than the Aura One?
Most reviews are missing any commentary on pdf rendering speeds and syncing capabilities of Kobo (notes, highlights, reading position) between devices and apps. Also, don't get hyped about the library things - it only works in selected countries.
Very underrated comment! PDFs are amazing on tablets but suck on most ereaders. That should be one of the benchmarks to show how well the device handles.
I have a Kobo Glo very pleased with it. This looks like a great devise ☺ I could have great use of those buttons and the size and weight this one have.
I regret buying oasis..this is way better
Does ‘Dead Dogs’ really sound good though?
The power button seems to be placed inconveniently. Does it happen that you touch it not on purpose while holding the reader in one hand?
So far not a problem, thankfully - the button only juts out slightly and the device is light enough so it doesn't push against your hand.
Worthy competitor. Please show how Pocket works.
It's super easy. Sign into your Pocket account and it syncs whenever you sync the Kobo. Shows a list of all your pocket saved articles. It's a nice feature for reading magazine or newspaper articles on your eReader.
I want this one than kindle oasis. I wish kobo upgrade their kobo mini line, I want pocket size e reader, e reader nowadays is getting bigger and bigger. I wish they make improve pocket e reader that include physical buttons. I hope I’m still alive when that happen
Please review pdf reading.
Any e-reader with a long battery life will not have a very powerful and capable CPU where a powerful CPU would have drained the battery in a short period of time. And without a powerful CPU, any PDF reading other than the least complex short documents, will be unimpressive.
i hope you mean for manga, because to be honest, you can get basically any pdf in epub format which is far better (and you can easily convert it to mobi)
Either way for manga i think its way better to have a tablet
@@SBVCP I wish this were true. In college I read a lot of scanned pdfs, which arent online as epubs or mobis.
I admit, it's been a while since I checked, but last I checked, it was pretty terrible. If it's pdfs you're focused on, I'd look elsewhere.
@@CasperLabuschagne what would you recommend for dedicated pdf ?
I believe the screen is plastic, not glass, so how long till it gets scratched
Hi! Is there a way we can enable the dark mode on this? I'm really interested in buying this because of the 8-inch size
I would love a stylus with it for underlining
How well does it interact with organization set up in calibre? Not being able to upload my organization onto a newer reader has kept me with my Sony PRS-350, but it's trying it's best to finally die.
The screens of ebook reader are very advanced nowadays. They are sharp with 300 points and with white background instead of the gray.
However e-ink isn't able yet to show many shades of gray. The images still look very bad. 16 shades of gray deliver very poor quality images. Of course it is better than nothing. They ideal would be 256 shades but even 64 shades could deliver very good images.
The refresh rate is very slow but that doesn't matter very much.
Would be aweful to read 50 shades of gray on 16 shades of gray screen..
I can't help it but everytime I see or read a review of an e-reader it feels like a book review where someone talks about the quality of the paper.
Which would be very important if you only had one book!
How big is the memory for files that are transferred from the PC? I usually download ebooks and transfer them to the e-reader via PC.
Screen looks pretty awesome.
Very sharp, and the blue light filter is a nice touch
I read that 32GB is only coming out for Japan? Well shit i was thinking about switching from my Kindle to Kobo guess i'm not anymore.
It should be released elsewhere at a later date according to Kobo. But Japan first. :/
My nook has like 250 MB for user content plus a spare SD card and its plenty
My Glo HD has 64 GB and my Aura One has 32 GB (Japan import). I read manga :)
@Pichkalu Pappita It's not a lot for manga.
I would get this but I have spent so much money/free books on Kindle and have over 100 books so idk if I should get Kobo at this point
You can transfer kindle books to kobo
@@SaiyaraLBS thanks 😊
@@Ang417 are you considering buying a kobo now? I really want to buy the forma but it's so expensive...are ebook readers worth it in general? I've never had one before
@@SaiyaraLBS no not a Kobo I bought the new Kindle last year so wouldn't have any reason to buy the Kobo yes I love e-readers been using them for about 4 to 5 years now easy to carry around and you have so many books at one time instead of carrying around heavy books..plus my apartment is small I literally have no space to put any books so I been buying more books on my Kindle
@@Ang417 i see! Thanks... I find these readers to be a bit too expensive though, the good ones cost more than a decent smartphone and smartphones serve way more purposes than just a reader so yeah kinda rethinking if I should invest in an e reader
I want one but way too expensive for just 8GB. Its around the same price as the oasis but you get 32GB
Which one is more good kindle or kobo 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Learn English
Can you download library books to borrow in England too?
Simply amazing !! Watching from Bangladesh .
Problem is that I want an e-reader that'll fit in my pocket ...
When is Kobo going to make an e-reader that accommodates audio books some of us love to read but when you're staring at a computer all day long when you get home you just want to listen to a book if it's not going to be soon I'll just stick with my tablet save my money that eReader is a bit pricey 😒
If audio books are your thing wouldn't it make more sense to just have a different device. A cheap mp3 player or you phone will handle those quite well and are easier to carry. Audio books on a kobo just seems like such a waste.
These devices were designed to look like a book.
Why can't I change the font size and style in my kobo?
Mine is new but it didn't even start
Did you depress the power on button numbnuts?
These bloody e-book readers are absurdly overpriced if I say so.
In Canada this would be your best choice of eReaders as Overdrive is built in! Why buy books when you can borrow from your library directly? For books I buy, I admit I use Kindle.
Compared to what though? Sure, they're expensive compared to just not getting one and reading a real book; but compared to many smart phones they're cheap. They just do one thing (books) really well as opposed to a phone which does many things medium well. I've read a book on my phone and it's not nearly as pleasurable (at least for me). Still I hear yeah. You can get cheaper Kobo's though. This is their flagship model.
Agree, more than 40 euros is too overprice for just read books
@Shreshth Goyal it's not due to the screen cost but the electronics
@Shreshth Goyal you paid for the instalation and a percentage for profit. The screen may have been 20 to 30% of the total cost. The electronics are far more complex and uses a custom wave form to drive the capsules. Screen swapping is easy. Installing the correct wave form is not.
I honestly dont understand who would pay $250+ for an ereader that barely does more than a basic ereader for a fraction of the cost. You can literally get 3 base Kindles for less than the Forma and the Oasis. What do you get for this extra cost? Waterproofing, slightly higher resolution, and some LED lights. I can honestly say I dont need or want waterproofing. The higher resolution is slightly nicer, but not necessary and definitely not worth the higher cost. As for the LED lights, I can get a ereader book light for $2. Also, I do not like the extra bulk on the side.
Maybe you're in the U.S.? In Canada, you can't put library books on Kindles without resorting to third party apps. That's a deal killer for me. I've saved a lot of money by borrowing my books.
I dont understand how this is relevant. I am talking about the cost, not the brand. The high end models prices are not justifiable.
Bad eyesight so bigger screen is a plus, overdrive built into this, screen lighting is TONS better than a clip on light and light adjustments is step above kindle blue light, it’s actually only 1ounce heavier and that bump makes it more comfortable to hold. I don’t have this. I have the oasis. Same concept though. I’m thinking of getting it. To each their own.
I have an Osasis and I’m totally stoked 💪🏼
Compared to the bookeen, both Kobo and Kindle sure are racing to see just how ugly they can get the hardware. I'll hold onto my original Kobo aura and Kindle paperwhite 3 (32gb model)...🙄
Can this read audiobooks like the Oasis?
Don't like this new look. Love my kobo mini for a nice light e reader
Does Kobo have BookBub books?
THX you man ;-)
I love my kobo aura one, so no need to upgrade.
You were lucky , I’ve read on the internet that they were one of the very best from kobo. it’s shame they have discontinued
Is there an e-reader out there that can display Nook and Kindle books? Or run the Nook and Kindle app?
Only Andfroid based ones like Onyx Boox etc.
What if you are left-handed?
I really wish I’d bought a Kindle. Kobo has not supported the features on my e-reader, so unless I buy over-priced books in their store (the free and low priced books are the dregs) its landfill. They should keep their toxic landfill and not foist it on buyers who actually want an e-reader that works.
3:55 a moment of dissapointment😂😂😂
He forgot to shake the reader 😊
Kobo Forma does not let the user highlight or put comments on PDF documents! I am a student and it does not worth me anything since I cannot highlight my ebooks, I had to buy Kindle Oasis.
Do you think its big enough to read PDFs on? :)
@@pernillevolck838 yeah, its size is fine for me.
I need this
Not available in India :(
Case?
There is one but it's expensive. 60$ Can.
The hook for me is the overdrive app and being able to download books from my library, otherwise I would just stick to Kindle.
I send books from Overdrive to my Kindle easily but I like that Overdrive is built into the Kobo which makes borrowing easier.
It's a huge selling point for me too.
super
Need ereader that can access my kindle library too..
You can change the book formats to fit with kobo
03:55 LOL
The cut at 4:01 suggests that even reorienting the screen takes some time... It probably does not handle PDFs with pictures well
I’ve seen another video where reorienting went quite quickly, so I suspect he accidentally had it set to ‘locked’ when he filmed this. The other video I referred to - from Good Ereader - did show that the Forma is still rather laggy with PDF’s, which for me personally isn’t an issue, as I use an e-reader for epubs only, and nothing really beats PDF reading on a tablet anyway.
Thanks, I've seen the Good Ereader video and reorienting is indeed quick
Sure hope its not as laggy and buggy as its predecessor Kobo Aura One
Yeah that one was sluggish. So far, touch wood, seems okay - although seen a few stutters here and there, when reorienting etc.
@@TechSpurt Shouldn't have edited the part where it doesn't re orientate itself when turned around.
Problem with Kobo Forma and the last Aura is that Rakuten now forces customers to use Adobe Digital Editions. Other models simply allowed us to upload files to the device and it would be immediately visible... This is the main reason why I decided not to buy Kobo Forma.
That's not true. I side load books all the time. You just plug it into a computer and drag books to the main folder. That's it.
Great video txs!
Price?
270 Trumps
Can it bend?
Nope, but it's pretty tough - would take some serious force to snap it!
I wouldn't pay more than $100 for a an e-ink reader.
Kobo are Replica kindle..KIndle on cheaper price is kobo
nice device , hey man , does it supprt Arabic language?
Hey, no sadly it doesn't
A luz do Kobo Aura One é perfeita, espero que esta seja também

You will lose your money .. some Sony products are very bad ..this is why they disappear from the market after.. for example, do you remember Expedia Go mobile?
the glaringly bad dark strip of darker light on the edge of the reader makes this not even close to be an Oasis killer. its a bad design and a fail.
This guy has an underwear fixation.
