    Glad you guys were in proper respirators, it’s so important the rubber mask fits to the face and has FFP3 filters when you’re dealing with asbestos. One fibre can cause mesothelioma, my uncle painfully died of it. Thanks for taking the risk to share a place which none of us will ever see.

    • @BitTwisted1
      @BitTwisted1 8 месяцев назад +3

      Although it is generally true that one fibre can theoretically cause cancer it does require some genetic susceptibility and some bad luck, also exposure and smoking more than doubles the risk. I'm 50 and working in engineering in England, everyone I work with their 60s knows a few people who have died from asbestos related diseases or lung cancer which was also likely related but formally undiagnosed. More frighteningly they tell stories of throwing the stuff about like snowballs when they were apprentices...
      Asbestos is in the environment in small amounts, not just from old asbestos sources. For example before 2020 it was common for baby talcum powder to be contaminated with Asbestos, primally because a small amount comes out of the same mineral deposits and needs careful separation when mined... which is expensive... and the government rarely tests for contamination. It turns out trusting the manufacturer, may have been somewhat poor decision.
      In the video it looks very damp and undisturbed, so much of the asbestos would not have been airborne, unless it was disturbed. However it is worth being very careful not to raise dust off your coveralls when you get undressed.
      Basically don't get too worried, something is going to get you, and generally asbestos is now one of the lower risks when compared with, for example driving, or worrying too much about about stuff.

    • @grahamhiggins1
      @grahamhiggins1 8 месяцев назад +2

      I appreciate your experience, but I’d say asbestos is a bit more deadly than driving. Blue and brown are obviously far worse than white. But in this explore, you can clearly see dust blowing across the cameras at one point in the bright light and it could contain anything. The point is, with the right gear, we can reduce or eliminate risk. Hospital workers and teachers in the UK are no stranger to mesothelioma. @@BitTwisted1

    10:45 Those big cylinders are the Co2 Drenching system for each of those transformer rooms . Usually there was a bunch of fire wires that would burn out at a set temperature and would break a circuit and trigger the drenching system . And usually the doors might have an auto shut system , they some times put self contained breathing apparatus sets inside these rooms for any one that might not have got out . Usually there was a time delay long enough for any one to get out before the doors shut , if you have ever seen a transformer go off you are running out or sadly never getting out . I have seen mass discharge of Co2 and one the noise is very loud , two it's damn cold and three with out the help of some self contained breathing apparatus your in a world of hurt . If you have ever set off a hand held co2 extinguisher you will understand the noise is loud , some people have been known to drop it at that sound . Also Co2 on discharge gets very cold , if you hold that extinguisher in the wrong place or get hit by the discharge you can get dry ice burns or your hand stuck to the extinguisher . The people that worked here would have had training and in your place of work you should have had training on fire drills and what to do in the event of fire and the extinguishers .

    14:48 those Diesel Generators are huge ,bigger than anything I have ever seen . I once had the opportunity to look around a Fuel Tanker , the Maersk Ascension which is now probably scrapped and long gone . We when into the engine room and there was this hatch removed and a circular room inside covered in oil , we obviously never went in but when asked what we thought it was by the engineer . He said it was one of cylinders of the engine !!! . Mad , thank you to the Maersk Ascension crew for showing us around and the many beers and fun conversations we had . Where ever you are now , thank you .

    Wow Alistair, what a fantastic explore, and along with all the rusting steel in that complex, I have to say you had balls made of it 🙂. As a father I have to say my heart was in my mouth for you, but I know you all try and be as safe as possible to bring us such wonderful videos as this one, and so pleased that you were able to find an alternative access point to get the rest of the lads in also. Great to see so much British engineering but sad to think where we once lead the world, we have slipped back so much. Thanks.

    Brilliant video , English Electric were a very famous company based in Newton Le Willows and specialised in Diesel engines , electrical equipment and Locomotives I belive the last development of their Locomotive Diesel engine was installed in the Class 56 locomotive which was developed by Ruston Paxman another huge company, the EE Vulcan foundry site has now been swept away with hardly a trace remaining.

    This place is so massive! Just think for one moment, if it were all cleaned up, supplies and equipment replaced with modern tech, the options for this are almost endless!
    Of course that takes exceptional ingenuity, planning, skills, administration and of course money. If I could "buy" it, and do what I liked with it, I would!
    Edit: Except I just learned at the end of your video, that place has been used for ASBESTOS storage that was removed from other places all around. That was a horrible move, in my opinion! The "fast," answer to dispose of asbestos is almost never the right, or best answer.
    I've seen 2 other Explores done at this location. What fascinates me so much, is just how structurally sound the entire place is, underground.
    I'm really glad you got to experience this place! Thanks very much for documenting all of this for historical record. Wonderful photography - that's not easy to do!

    • @Urbandoned
      @Urbandoned  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the lovely comment. It would be some challenge to fix the site up now, especially after the recent storage inside. And yes, although in areas, it is close to busy surroundings, it does stay extremely noise tight. Almost surreal to walk through only to hear your own breaths…

    Was just reading that this place is going to be re-used. The plan is to install large scale battery storage for renewable energy sources to serve the island. Hopefully that won’t mean too much of the historic kit will be lost but it is good that the place will be returned to use as part of the energy supply infrastructure for the island, which is what is what built for originally. If it is stripped out though, all the more important that this document exists.
    Great explore Alistair. I’ll be rewatching this one for sure.

    The island has many miles of underground tunnels most of which date back to when the forts were constructed by the Knights of St John. The island is steeped in history and played a vital part in WWII and was saved from oblivion by the combined efforts of the British Armed Forces who used the tunnels as "War Rooms" . Those areas are open to the public and over the years more and more have been opened up. The island's capital has a tunnels beneath it which served as air-raid shelters during WWII and periodically they are opened up for visitors.
    Fort Maneol is also worth a visit as it also has many underground tunnels, some of which are sealed off but I was once told by a local diver that they can be accessed from the harbour at low water.

    You mentioned whilst alone it wasn't possible to give a human for size comparison. Have you considered either popping the cameraon a tripod or flat surface... you could frame the item you wanted (say the diesel engine powered turbines you first see) walk by in shot, then just come back and collect the camera. Can interleave these shots into your vid 😉
