Mad-Libs and reading good books is my strategy for ELA! I wanted my kids to like reading so I have very rarely done formal instruction in this area. The older kids now see the vast difference in our approach compared to kids who went to school their whole childhood. I’m also amazed at my kids’ ability to write well simply from reading well written books!
You have such a talented daughter Chantel! We're loving a book called 'Jumpstart! Grammar' which has lots of different sorts of games we either do verbally or brain storm on a white board. Only started using it, but think it gets you thinking even as an adult! My daughter is dysgraphic/dyslexic so I have found typing for her is a great way for her to express her creative writing. We buy lots of beautiful mythical beast stories (Folklore Field Guides is an excellent example) that inspire her to write her own ideas/versions. And of courses lots and lots and lots of books!
Have you heard of the book Grammar-Land? My 5th grader is going through that book in her co-op class, it's cute. For anyone out there looking for some easy grammar instruction 😊
I don't use it every day but I enjoy the oral aspect of it and that is the resource: "Our Mother Tongue" by Nancy Wilson. Whenever, we want some review this book has been great! I have a 10 year old and an 8 year old so I am still figuring it out. My oldest is in the CC Essentials program which is very structured. It is ok. I like certain aspects but the more I learn about learning...the less I like it ...but for this year we are where we are.
How refreshing to watch a video like this. I lack amconfidence in teaching La in our homeschool. I exhaust myself watching and thinking about which la program to use. I love that you seem to just read so many books that teaches and leads it’s way to good writing.
Do you have a video that explains your loop schedule? I'm trying to do more unschooling/child-led learning this coming year and this sounds so much like how we naturally have started going. Would love to see how you go through a loop schedule without curriculum.

I'm pretty sure it was Bailey way back in the day that originally introduced Rae to Mad Libs so I think I actually have you to thank for it!

We use bananagrams and scrabble for spelling!
