I can’t tell you just how helpful this video is for me. Starting homeschool, haven’t found a language arts curriculum that checks the boxes I need it to and piecemeal sounded daunting. I’m a work from home mama so I need some level of convenience and this video just put a lot into perspective for me so thank you!!

I had never heard of Reading Detective. I just added it to my Amazon list for next school year. Thanks! We initially started with an all in one language arts curriculum as well, but quickly realized it wasn’t for us. We use different resources for our language arts. We now use Fix-It! Grammar, IEW for writing, Moving Beyond the Page for our literature units. Moving Beyond the Page has amazing book choices for in-depth literary analysis units. We also do All About Spelling. Totally agree with you. It seems overwhelming at first, but it just works out so much better for us to customize it this way. After all, customizing curriculum is the whole point of homeschooling. ❤

Hiii! Young homeschool mom here! My oldest is going into 2nd grade for next school year but we’ve been homeschooling from the beginning. Can you share your schedule / timing of how you fit all of this in?? Or if you have a video of where you talk about it? I’m feeling overwhelmed with how I will manage all these subjects with also teaching my 4 year old and taking care of the home/ errands and cooking. Thank you!

I love this! Exactly the way I do things lol I’m getting the 180 days book due to your last review on it and I was struggling on whether to use IEW and your videos have been so helpful. I’m definitely sold on it for my oldest this coming year. I’ve never used an all in one either. I always find different things to cover each element of LA as well. We are very eclectic over here 😂 Have you ever done poetry teatime? My kids love it! It’s such a fun way to read poetry and discuss it.

Really like this video! I don't use an all-in-one LA curriculum for my sixth grader either. It works best for us. Also, I have found that sometimes an all-in-one curriculum can be a little bit weaker in certain areas and stronger in others (i.e. very strong in grammar but not strong in spelling). We use many of the same resources you use!

I have seriously watched this video 3-4 times. Next year will be my first year homeschooling. I’ll have a 5th, 1st, and preK/k learner in my home. I’m definitely an eclectic teacher so I loved the way you broke down this LA buffet you put together. So many wonderful resources. I’m very intrigued as to how you combine brave writer with IEW and not have it become overwhelming. I’d love to do that incorporating of the literature piece but it seems like IEW is very In depth so I’m not sure where we would squeeze that into our learning routine. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! 😊

I think that every parent that is new goes to that all in one program. I have been homeschooling for 5+ years and I love not using all in one and actually find it fun to mix and match. I love Nose Tree. I learned a lot from it and my second grader is catching on. I think that one sentence a day for her age is enough. Do you think Structure and Style is too much for 3rd grade? I am already looking into the next school year since we school year round.

    • @brittanyolga

In short I honestly think IEW SSS 1A might be to much for an average 3rd grader. I think the theme based writing units for the younger grades is more appropriate for a 3rd grade in my opinion. You can try out 3 weeks for free of IEW SSS to see if it would be a good fit before committing. 😊

Brittany, we are also using Structure and Style from IEW. The first book is only 24 weeks long. How do you spread that out over a whole school year? I’ve taken off a week in October and 2 weeks off for Christmas and we will be taking off another 2 weeks for spring break and even after all the breaks we will still be done April 18th. Just wondering what you do towards the end of the year to finish strong so they are good to go for the following year, but don’t want to weigh my son down too much because IEW is heavy in writing too…
