    It is really refreshing to hear a reviewer who's impartial about the DJI/Shark Byte thing; they're different, they perform best in different situations/styles/quads, one is not better than the other, I believe, they just do different things, and both do them well. I'm partial to Fat Shark simply because I don't like the way DJI doesn't really play with others, and Fat Shark has been a big part of, and supporter of, the FPV community from the very beginning, and even tho it took them many, many years to put a stupid power button on their goggles, I still appreciate their involvement with the hobby, as opposed to DJI... But again, just my two cents... Anyway, LOVE the build, I'm building something similar, as far as size/weight goes, but with different components... If it flies halfway as good as this one, I'll be thrilled! Excellent work, thank you for showing us your process of designing & building!

    I fly in a tight backyard too and I've been enjoying the analog crux3. This is the first video that really got me thinking about Shark Byte. Unfortunately since I have the old Dominator HD2 I would need to replace those too or deal with less than full resolution. Hopefully even lighter stuff comes out and fatshark can find a niche in micros.

    • @achuvikov
      @achuvikov 3 года назад +1

      I am in the similar boat, I do have HD3 though(but with the same resolution). I feel like having 720p resolution is probably not as important because I don't think sharkbyte's video is truly 720p, it just not as sharp as it should be and noticeably worse than DJI FPV system which I think is 720p. I suspect internally it's less and just upscaled to 720p. I did the experiment and made a video where I fly using phone camera and played back it in my HD3. It looked much more detailed than what I saw with sharkbyte recordings. So I feel like the video most likely would be limited by sharkbyte system rather than goggles resolution unless you go lower to like non-HD Dominators which are 480p

      Here's a 1 minute clip. It was compressed by the DVR in my Shark Byte receive, but it has not been recompressed after that. I simply trimmed it using ffmpeg (fast and lossless). You will see that there are little squares of interference quite often. I later discovered that my small 100uF capacitor was at least partly to blame. I switched to a 220uF capacitor and now I get less of that breakup. Fat Shark recommends a 330uF capacitor (it comes with the VTX) but I decided that was too big for this particular build. Cheers!

    id love to see a truly engineered whoop build. one that takes an initial flight time and thrust to weight ratio, and then selects the components to meet those requirements. prop selection, motor kv, FC board v and i rating. etc.
    eCalc is a tool i havent seen mentioned by any YT drone content developers yet its been a mainstay for fixed wing and heli builders for year..and has a fantastic drone design feature.
    for racing, the tool allows you to predict top speed and acceleration from the setup you choose. we used to use it for pylon racing and it was more than once used to win RC fixed win events..almost everyone else was just guessing and relying on subjective testing..which becomes expensive.

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  3 года назад +3

      I’ve gotten a lot of requests for that. Maybe I’ll show it on a different build. I use antenna extension cables and cut them to length. It’s a coax cable. The outer mesh goes to ground. The inner wire goes to the antenna pad on the FC. Then you just have to strip away the mesh on the other end to expose the active part of the antenna. 12.92mm of the inner wire should be exposed with no mesh around it. That’s 1/4 wavelength at 5.8GHz. Hope that helps.

  • @DarrenAllatt
    @DarrenAllatt 3 года назад

    Nate, I saw on the FatShark group that you were discussing the video resolution, disputing the 720p and stating that its closer to 440p. I have discovered that the shyte video quality is because the packet rate is ~15mbps compared to DJI's 50mbps. I found this by looking at the bit rate data in the DVR file's properties. Right click, properties, details - data rate & bit rate. This would be a logical explanation of the video quality

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  3 года назад

      The DVR compresses the video at that bit rate, which is why it looks worse than the live video in the goggles. It is not an indication of the transmission rate.

    • @DarrenAllatt
      @DarrenAllatt 3 года назад

      @@MrShutterBug It looks on par with the goggles and I think the live feed is pretty average. It only uses one channel for transmitting unlike 50mbps mode on DJI which is spread over two channels so it would appear that the transmit bit rate is still way below that of DJI. The video in the goggles looks less than 25mbps mode on DJI - which would substantiate your comments (if they are still valid) about it being 440p and not 720p
      What are your thoughts on the transmit bit rate and how do you think the quality issue could be solved?
      Could it be that the bitrate is right because its upscaled 440p to 720p?

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  3 года назад

      @@DarrenAllatt I agree DJI has more image data and Shark Byte is less detailed than we would like. My point was that you can’t tell the transmission rate by the DVR rate. Also, the two systems work in very different ways. Shark Byte sends the full data of the frame every frame. That way, the experience can continue even if some blocks of the data fail to transmit. The DJI system works more like mpeg or RUclips. For each frame it encodes only enough data to transform the previous frame into the new one. If there is a lot of similarity (e.g. half the sky is still the same shade of blue), then you don’t need to send as much data. In that kind of system, you must retransmit any data that was dropped because you can’t move forward otherwise. That retransmission is what causes variable latency. Does that make sense? They are fundamentally different, so comparing bit rate isn’t sufficient. I don’t know what the over-the-air bit rate of Shark Byte is, but it must be reasonably high to transmit even 480p60 without depending on the previous frame the way DJI does. I would guess that it is close to the 25mbit that DJI uses when restricted to the same bandwidth. But that is just a guess. The people who advocate for Shark Byte all claim that it is transmitting a true 720p60 signal but neither of the two cameras actually produce a true 720p signal to feed it. We won’t really know if that’s true unless someone later produces a new camera that really does maximize the system. Who knows if/when that will happen. In the meantime people must choose based on what is actually available today. For myself, I love DJI for exploring the world and for casual freestyle. It looks great in those cases. However, I prefer the feel of Shark Byte when racing or flying fast proximity. That’s my choice. I can feel the DJI latency changing (I’m cursed that way) and I like the way the Shark Byte quality is unaffected by speed where the DJI image gets much more blurry when you fly fast close to the ground (eg when there is little coherency from frame to frame). And of course there’s the weight and size differences. So… strengths and weaknesses. Both systems have a place IMO. Cheers.

    Call that hd however you want. That thing is just slightly better than analog.

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  3 года назад

      I think it is a significant improvement over analog, but it is easier to see that difference in the goggles than online. That said, I also agree that it is not demonstrating full 720p "HD" as they claim. I have been told that the Shark Byte protocol is capable of full 1280x720 resolution but nobody has yet made a camera that feeds it with a full "HD" image. Maybe that's true and maybe we'll see a better camera that demonstrates more resolution in the future, but we don't see that today. Today, Shark Byte is like "better analog". Still, it is quite enjoyable to fly with Shark Byte. The low latency and consistent frame rate are actually quire nice. DJI is nice too, but in different ways.

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  3 года назад +3

      It’s hard to say. In theory the larger motors should help, but my 13mm motors are on the DJI build which is also heavier, so not a direct comparison.

    Really cool build! You make some great points about the shark byte system. I'm all in on DJI right now but have been considering shark byte for racing at least, unless DJI is able to fix the latency issue. The weight is another plus for shark byte. I do hate fatshark as a company though lol. Plenty of reasons to hate on DJI too I guess. Whatever, I'm just happy to have HD FPV.

    that camera mount is fantastic! It would be even better if there were several angle options availabe. Unfortunately I am completely hopeless in these types of programs. Would you mind providing additional stl files for different camera angles (up to 45 deg ideally ^^)

    do you feel the same confidence flying in scraggle and trees with sharkbyte as you do with DJI?

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  3 года назад

      It’s too early for me to say for sure. In general, I think the DJI system helps me resolve finer details including scraggle, but only when the DJI signal is strong. When it gets weaker, the DJI image gets blurry. The shark byte image never gets blurry, it just gets a bunch of garbage on screen. I’m pretty good at looking past that interference (probably from my long familiarity with analog static) so I can usually still make out what I need to see. So DJI has a sharper clearer image most of the time, but I have not yet had any actual problems running into things that I couldn’t see with SB. Hope that helps. Cheers!

    Hey, really awesome work but i was expecting a resin printed canopy cos that would have been perfect? Tpu is very good because it wont break but mixing resins like flex100 or strong-x could make it as though with the benefits of reduced weight and beatiful canopy. Its only $250 for the printer (elegoo mars) but i guess total could go up to $700 but you would love the 0.05x0.05x0.05mm accuracy.

    • @MrShutterBug

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  2 года назад +1

      You'll need different goggles to fly HDZero, but if you decide to try analog, then you could make it work with the AV-in jack on your DJI goggles. I know several people who do that.

  • @FilipRadelic

    I got mine down to 54.7g with naked Vista and Nebula Nano and I estimate I could get it down to ~52g if I went full Mr. Shutterbug on it :) But instead I upgraded to Nebula Pro which added almost a full gram between camera and a different mount, and the video upgrade is much more significant than performance impact of 1g. Thing is, I don’t think this looks enough better than analog to justify ~7g+ (neither does Nebula Nano for that matter) and it costs roughly the same as DJI which is a whole different experience.

    • @FilipRadelic
      @FilipRadelic 3 года назад +2

      Btw I’m using a 20x20 AIO because it actually works (this one has been with me for over 2 years now) unlike full drawers of these fried whoop and toothpick boards 😅

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  3 года назад +1

      I do think Shark Byte is significantly better than analog, but the weight is something you can feel at this size. I could go lighter with this one, but I can’t save more than a gram or two without compromising durability (which is clearly a feature I need LOL). DJI looks better for sure, but I don’t think it feels better. Again totally subjective. Also, I think it’s cool that FatShark is competing and doing some things different from DJI. Competition and selection are good things for all of us!

    • @FilipRadelic
      @FilipRadelic 3 года назад

      @@MrShutterBug absolutely, competition is good. I just think DJI is too far ahead to be bothered by SB, especially considering our market size.
