I have a 1970 Sears Super Suburban garden tractor with the original 14 HP cast iron engine. The old mag was weak and the mechanism that opens the points was so worn that the points gap could not be adjusted more than about .014 inches. Should be .020 inches. I decided to buy the electronic mag these guys used ( the Briggs and Stratton part 398811) and I put it in and it started cold with manual rope start. These guys taught me a valuable lesson. And the very experienced small engine mechanic in my town told me there was no way to convert the cast iron engine to electronic ignition without mailing the flywheel back to Briggs to have the magnet reversed (and possibly rejected for some tiny little insignificant crack). Wait til I see him again!
Just rewatched this for the hell of it. After yrs now of watching Taryl's videos I have to say he's the most knowledgeable small engine guy I have ever seen and has more common sense than most aswell. He will MAKE a way for something to work when others would be lost.
I have a 1970 Sears Suburban 12 myself, I restored it 7 years ago, and I'm going to restore it again shortly. I love it, it's my fricking best friend, I'm never letting that tractor go!
I bout one of them electronic ignition modules many years ago to convert my Gilson and Montgomery Words tractors from the 1960's and early 1970's and it didn't work. So I went back to the points and condenser ,,,,,,,,, Now I know why it didn't work . I'm still using all those tractors today and they're still points and condensers in them. Seeing your video now, you got me thinking maybe I Should try it again. Then again,,, It ain't a big deal to to change or clean and adjust the points every few years. Really like your videos, Thanks Taryl. Ya'll enjoy yer Easter.
One of these days I would love to meet all 3 of the grass rats. These guys need their own reality lawnmower show. I think it would do extremely well... awesome video as always grass rats..👍👍👍
They’ll and the boys really know their s**t and I don’t miss any of their videos, I love this stuff and I learn so much from you guys. Thank you grass rats garage for all your hard work and funny skits. You Guys are by far my favorite RUclips channel. Keep them coming guys your killing it. Greg
So glad you made this video Taryl!! My ‘73 13 hp coil STB and i was down and out til i watched this video. Absolutely brilliant and had coil swapped out with $13 electronic and running great in no time. Thanks so much and i love your videos!! Keep em comn!
How do you know what model electronic coil to replace the points one with?? Or are they all much the same thing?? I'm guessing you go by the motor size?
WAS A SUCCESS Followed your directions. Flipped the coil backwards and away she went. REMEMBER TO REPLACE THE FLYWHEEL KEY. Mine wouldn't run until I changed the flywheel key. The old one got bumped and deformed and that's all it took. So replace it. Thanks Taryl!
I've got an old '67 Simplicity 2012 Landlord with a 243431 Briggs engine that has a weak/no spark. I've changed the coil , points , condenser , wiring , spark plug to no avail. I ordered the briggs 398811 ignition set to hopefully remedy the problem. Thanks for the info.
Thanks, this information helped me a lot with my 1979 B&S cast iron 10HP 243xxx engine. With the new style coil installed "wrong" side out as you did, I finally have a good hot reliable blue spark.
Taryl, I've got this old Simplicity tiller with the B&S 19D 8hp. Can I get rid of the points and condenser by installing the BS 398811 kit? If so, would I have to reverse installation (flip it) to reverse magnet polarity? Thanks for your help. Alain
Good video. Never realized flipping the coil prevents having to re-magnetize. I had heard about sending your flywheel away. Maybe this is why another kit I saw says nothing about it. Could be aftermarket, and all they do is flip it.
Glad I watched. Unfortnately I have a Toro Groundsmaster, and all the drive has to be remove before I can even get the cover off. Yer smarter than you look!
Mine has that electronic conversion. It ran, but poorly. I reversed the coil. and things are much better now. Also sanded mucho rust off the flywheel magnets, so a gap adjustment would be meaningful. Then found the ground wire were some burned 18ga? wire, and my kill wouldn't work. Replaced them w/16ga. Now< I can turn it off.
Great video! I have an issue with my 1970-something Montgomery Wards Squire tractor with a 12 HP Briggs & Stratton engine. I Installed the new magneto backwards as you showed in the video. I was able to get spark when I turned the engine over. Connected all the wires and tried to turn it over with the key. While it was turning over I had heavy smoke coming from the wires and stopped everything and disconnected the battery. It seems the wires to the voltage regulator all burnt off. Do I still need a voltage regulator with that magneto? It has the starter solenoid and the starter is also a generator to charge the battery. Will look for a local small engine mechanic but thought I would start here where I learned it. Thoughts anyone?
The B&S part I found - 394970 - uses the original coil, and just adds the substitute points/condenser (I'm guessing it's their version of the Nova II with which you started). How to find the correct coil for my Series 8 cast iron 2-½ hp engine ?
I have this same machine. Instead of supporting Briggs and Stratton, I simply took an $11.⁰⁰ Clonda clone coil for the 420 cc engine. It took two vice grips, one for each side of the coil legs. Then took it to the bench grinder, and ground the legs to fit the bigger flywheel. Seems like I drilled one hole out bigger in said coil to fit the original mounting tabs. Seems as tho the Clone cool was mounted the opposite way to work. The key is to use vice grips to hold the coil lamanats together. I've used the Clonda coils in several engines since. They cost nearly nothing, and can be drilled to fit most engines. Or all the engines I've needed them for.
I keep searching for information on an old V twin I have. It's on an old Western Auto more. Can you swap out a 1 cylinder flywheel to the V twin??? I love your videos and I've used A LOT of your videos to get me out of a bind.
awesome Taryl, i signed up a few days ago , you are a little funny weird..haha , you give tremendous good advise, and i apreciate this very well, you always look at the details , and never afraid to flip some peices hahaha, thanks you so much for being funny, from Belgium best regards
Taryl, my 16HP B&S has an external coil and I want to go to this Briggs coil 398811. Once installed I can remove the external coil and just leave the points...correct? Since I've never seen a "kill" wire I'm not sure where the other end runs to or what actually kills the engine. Mine has a toggle switch I must flip first and then an ignition switch to start it. The ignition switch will NOT kill the engine when turned off, I have to use the toggle. So where does the kill wire run to? And do I even need the toggle?
Hi Tarly enjoy your videos from grass rats garage. I was wondering can i convert my hh60 tecumseh engine over from points and condenser to electronic ignition? Yes or no. Keep the videos rolling i learn lots from them
I tried the electronic coil replacement trick on a 143302 Briggs 5.75 HP. engine and the coil fit the flywheel but it didn't work. I am wondering if it's just that I got a bad Chinese coil off Ebay or if there is some other reason. I have 2 more of the 143302 engines that I would like to convert and they are a popular engine in the David Bradley werld but not understanding why it doesn't werk.
Dale Williford he does have a video on that if you have not already found it. I can’t remember if it was a Stihl or not. But, the same principle will apply.
I'm confused. If we have magnets on the flywheel and the coil, why are pointed needed ? I don't understand these old ignition systems. I bought a old simplicity 728 with a 7hp briggs and Stratton. I believe it has points, plus it has a generator and a voltage regulator for battery charging, I think. Can anyone explain how this system works? Thank you.
Is it possible to use that little ignition module on older tecumseh engines with points and coil under the flywheel, tried a couple times without luck and just put the points back in. Can’t find much info that anyone has done this or any videos on it as well.
Hello Taryl, gr8 video. I just got a mower going a few weeks ago, fancy-ass coil sed same thing, cylinder side this side out. how is it coil would only work mounted as sed?, yet it worked the other way 4 U? i bet u guys would be a blast wrkg on Harley Davidsons!
Tarly, I have done my conversion, my tractor starts & runs. I use this tractor for mini tractor pulling. Can you make a second video on how to fine tune the timing & dial it in.
That's genius! Could you use a coil from a post points engine? How interchangeable are these coils between Briggs engines? I've got a push mower with a rusted deck that has B&S 3.5 hp engine on it. Would the coil from it work on an 8 HP B&S that came with points? I think the 8 HP engine was made in the early 1970s.
Hey Taryl could you do a video on a high torque small engines. I hear there are 8hp and up engines that are flat out big that I have only seen many years ago but if you know what I am talking about do a video on them please.

Taryl question for u I have a briggs and stratton i/c 13hp diamond which is about 24 years old the engine won't spin over fast enough to start even with the a jump starter on the starter. pulled the spark plug out and the head still does the same any ideas. Yes the electrics do work.
Hey what's up I was wondering what you gap ur plugs at for your small engine and is there a difference between just stock to a racing mower or go kart specifically the Tecumseh powersport 6.0
Hi Taryl.... Love your videos. I have a 16HP Briggs twin opposed horizontal engine on my 1978 Roper tractor. I replaced the old coil with two different new electronic ignition coils (392329) from China. The first ran about 5 minutes. The engine started to misfire and quit and would not start thereafter. Put the old coil back on and it ran again. I reordered a second coil, and it would run and there would be the occasional drop in RPMs for a 10-20 second period. Then it quit and would not run again after a total of 5-7 minutes. Is there something I am doing wrong for both these coils to fail? I noticed that these new coils have a much weaker magnetic connection to the fly wheel. Are there better quality coils available? I assume you can't get the old coils that use points?
I'm sure Taryl is right for 99% of tractors but 1% out there doing this conversion having trouble here is my experience. i put the 398811 coil on my old 67 B&S 12 horse, checked it both ways it only sparked in the when installed correctly as indicated on the coil. no matter where i put the timing it would start like it was advanced and run but never run very smoothly. I even elongated the holes to adjust timing more. sent flywheel to briggs they re-polarized and got it back the next day (i'm in MN). now coil installed same correct way, timing back to original - barley touch the key and it's running smooth as a kitten.
@@transammike sometimes the magnets can lose their magnetic ability. Sending in to re-energize them or re polarize in this case is the best option for this scenario
One question: does it make a difference if there is some rust on the flywheel ? I am just rebuilding my tractor since I mistreated him for the last three years (no fuel stabilizer, oil changes and air filters), so it quit the service this spring. I, by watching your videos, really understand the technical secrets behind it! Thank you so much 😊
Maik1968 I realize I'm way late to the party, but yes, you should use some Scotch Brite or something to remove the rust. It doesn't help the spark, but it does allow you to set the gap more accurately.
I’m doing this conversion on my allis charmers b10 with a Briggs 23d and there is no spark but I can barely feel it in the wire I cleaned flywheel magnets and coil and adjusted timing any suggestions? Maby a new coil?
jim s I'm wondering the same thing. I have 2 Sears SS15's like this. I put a Nova on one two years ago, and it worked great without timing. It's been working great ever since. I put a Nova on my second SS15. It runs but as you increased the throttle it will start missing badly. I installed a coil one today. I have spark, but it won't start. How do I know which way to move the timing, and how far. There are also arrows on the flywheel and coil mount. How would you use them?
Thank you Taryl for the most informative and funny video. If I opt to go the new solid state magneto you describe, do I need to buy (the Briggs and Stratton OEM part 398811) or can I buy a clone that claims to be an exact replacement for the 398811? Example ENGINERUN or HZ brand at 1/3 the price. Do these clones need to also be reversed back to front as you describe for the OEM part? Thanks, Doug
Does the engine REALLY run better with a pointsless ignition system? It means for one thing the engine builder didn't have to machine a cam or lobe to work the points so the builder eliminated a step and saved $$ by not needing a machined cam. The primary coil (heavier winding) can be used to power a regular ignition coil, one side of ignition coil to wire that would have gone to points, other side of ignition coil to points. This can be done if magneto's secondary or high-voltage winding is shot.
I have a 1970 Sears Super Suburban garden tractor with the original 14 HP cast iron engine. The old mag was weak and the mechanism that opens the points was so worn that the points gap could not be adjusted more than about .014 inches. Should be .020 inches. You only need a fuel pump if the gas tank is lower than the carb........The tank under the seats of John Deere's need a fuel pump....

From ssi to something else cause a used ssi cost 100

Hmm. If you buy an electronic ignition you need a new flywheel. Or if it's weak spark maybe clean the points?
Just an update for everyone. In 2023 Briggs no longer offers this service.
U gonna put that shroud back on the engine for good cooling?
Great video. How do you determine how much you have to move the coil?

I put a Nova on my second SS15. It runs but as you increased the throttle it will start missing badly. I installed a coil one today. I have spark, but it won't start. How do I know which way to move the timing, and how far. There are also arrows on the flywheel and coil mount. How would you use them?
Also I love your videos smart and funny. Thanks
Thanks for my dinner keep up the good videos
Thank you Taryl for the most informative and funny video. If I opt to go the new solid state magneto you describe, do I need to buy (the Briggs and Stratton OEM part 398811) or can I buy a clone that claims to be an exact replacement for the 398811? Example ENGINERUN or HZ brand at 1/3 the price. Do these clones need to also be reversed back to front as you describe for the OEM part? Thanks, Doug
Does the engine REALLY run better with a pointsless ignition system? It means for one thing
the engine builder didn't have to machine a cam or lobe to work the points so the builder
eliminated a step and saved $$ by not needing a machined cam. The primary coil (heavier
winding) can be used to power a regular ignition coil, one side of ignition coil to wire that
would have gone to points, other side of ignition coil to points. This can be done if magneto's
secondary or high-voltage winding is shot.
Can anyone tell me what will fit a 11hp briggs for electronic coil from points . It's on a 80's bolens articulating mower
Where do you get a feeler gauge that long?
