Excellent presentation! I was an instructor for thirty years and don't believe I ever heard anyone as articulate as you are. There was not a single pause, such as searching for a word and your pace was perfect. You should be a college professor! Our situation is a bit different in that the engine will not turn off, even with the key removed. We disconnected the battery to shut down the engine and, also, the panel lights were remaining illuminated. Best of luck from out here in Idaho and we definitely owe you a beer!
My 1996 K1500 had was not shifting, the Tach/Speedometer quit and the gear indicator was out. Ordered this part and replaced the starter switch and it fixed it all. The video is spot on. A couple things to add. No need to remove the snap ring. While not necessary to remove the steering wheel it really gives you room to work if you do. Also pay attention to the direction he is using the screwdriver to remove the airbag. The E-4 star bit can be found at O'riley auto parts. They are a slender 1/4 inch drive socket set of 5 and will fit to take off the two screws holding the switch on. Disassembly took a few because I had never done it but reassembly only took about 30 minutes. Not that hard to do and will save you money by not having someone else do it.
Removing the steering wheel and messing with the airbag is an unnecessary step while replacing the ignition switch. The rest of this video is step-by-step exactly how the process should be done.
I was wondering about that. I replaced the key/tumbler assembly without pulling the wheel so I was going leave it unless necessary on this little job too. I was actually going to comment/inquire about it until I saw your post. Thanks.
Great video! Helped me a lot especially with the key cylinder. Skip removing the steering wheel, no need even with airbag(mine has one). Also, if you are patient and careful, you can open the switch and clean the contacts and reassemble. Worked for me and saved $120.

Very good video ! You're right, you must have an E4 inverted socket to get those 2 screws on the top switch. My old harness had a pinched white wire ,probably my fuel pump hot wire, will see if this fixes it- thanks 1AAUTO !

Instead of removing the steering wheel, I opted to remove the Driver side seat. Made it somewhat more comfortable. The E4 deep socket is a must.
I just removed the top and bottom covers. The seat bolts are rusted, live in the Midwest.
Exactly what I was looking for ! Could not figure out how to get top off! That’s cause u can’t until releasing the ignition switch ! I was about to cut . Glad I didn’t. Thanks so much !
Fixed the issue with my truck. Tach was not working, speedo was stuck on 100, check gauges light on, gear indicator out, transmission could only be shifted between 2nd and 3rd manually. Thanks for the video. You WILL need a 4mm female torx socket for the steering wheel part of the switch. Start to finish, took me about 3 hours. I did not remove the steering wheel.

Great video, as usual from 1A Auto! It appears they replaced the clock spring in this video but did not detail the work on that part. That is the only reason the wheel and the snap ring on the clock spring would need to be removed.
There's another harness for the switch that also has another snap plug that plus into the top of the ignition that looks exactly the same as this one. I pulled 2 today from the junkyard. Easy peezy after you do it a few times
If your having transmission trouble, check fuse 20 in the dash fuse pannel. If theres no power supplied to that fuse then your ignition switch has failed.

Must the E4 torx be deep style?
Would this part help stop the security light on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe from coming on? Or is it the cylinder that needs to be replaced? Been having a issue with security light staying on or even flashing at some point. Have to wait 10 minutes before I can start up...

Another great, thorough tutorial. My son’s 98 Silverado keeps poppin’ the “IGN-1” fuse (@fuse box under hood). I’ve inspected the fuse box and the underneath side, no signs of burns or corrosion. Could a faulty ignition switch assembly be the culprit? Or, is there something else I should investigate. Thanks.

Will a bad ignition switch no engine light to come on? Cause noticed when check enginge light is on it starts just fine
Hi on my 97 Chevy c1500 I broke the key censor that goes inside the switch housing. Can I use it with out the censor or is ther a repair for just the small plastic censor
Ok so any help would be appreciated.. my 96 Silverado gets stuck in crank mode while cranking the truck. It cranks up just fine but the key gets stuck in crank mode. I’ve already replaced the ignition key and lock cylinder and door locks with one from 1a auto. I thought that would fox the problem but it didn’t so I was wondering would this ignition switch fix the problem?
i have a 95 with no tilt!.... i want to swap in a tilt column. do i have to find a 95 doner? or will a 96 97 or 98 steering column work? the reason i ask is because mine is tbi and 96 97 and 98 are vortec.

I got a 97 single cab , was experiencing issues before I got to the first step. ( Disconnect negative cable on battery) . Barely a quarter turn to loosen the cable I got power. I recommend to anyone experiencing problems to try this first!
I currently have a problem with my 98 Tahoe each time I turn the switch into the run position my ignition 40 fuse blows … could these be the problem? ( starter is new thinking that was the problem I replace it since was giving up) I have no other issue whatsoever….

Question: Can a bad ignition switch cause an intermittent problem where the alternator does not charge but vehicle will still crank and start? I have this problem on my truck and neither myself nor 3 mechanics have been able to figure out what's going on. It has new alternator, battery etc...problem still randomly happens, which then causes trans computer to not power and truck is stuck in 1st gear with battery discharging. A friend said ignition switch could be the cause... Fun times.

I still can crank my truck but the fuel pump and dash lights and turn signals won't work. Would this part be the cause of my problem 95 Cheyenne k2500 4x4.
97 K1500 Tach and Speedo dead this definitely is the fix. Easy enough to diagnose. Put a test light on #20 fuse if no power to transmission this is likely why. Not too hard to do recommend buying E4 and E5 deepwell 1/4 inch set. You don't need to remove the steering wheel.

I got a problem with my 1995 chevy, sometimes it dies when i turn the right or left signal or press on the brakes. I turn back the key and than forward and starts again. Could it be the ignition swith?
Turn signal or step on the brake to put into drive it just dies? Like doesn’t choke or anything just acts like pressing the brake means I turned the key off..? Mines doing the same thing and I’m going nuts trying to track this down

Yes but if that doesn't fix it could be the ecu but more likely the ignition switch I had the same problem
My truck fuse 40-a fuse / ignition keeps blowing out. I've heard this could be related to fuel pump wiring issues. I jump started the started and even worked after a few cranks. What do you recomend my issue is? Also, please help me locate the area/wires that would most common be the issue at.

I have this same truck almost. And I have trouble starting it. It'll start to turn over but then just stop and it'll just struggle to turn over. It's almost like it loses power to start and then a few seconds later it gets it back . I'll turn the key again but just slightly and it usually fires right up. Any ideas on what the problem is.?
I have the a similar problem to my 98 k2500 454. Suburban it will crank the engine but wont wont start i changed the fuel pump and fuel filter sparks plugs etc but i cpu says its an ignotion problem i havent changed it yet im guess i might have to change the ignition harness also
Would the ignition wire be the cause of a no start no spark no fuel pressure?
Jnez08 did you find an answer for this question? I was told yes this will cause a no spark issue and code usually ends up stating it is a Crank shaft position sensor.

I have a 95 diesel and one day I went to start it up and nothing. I had zero issues with speedo transmission etc. I waited a push button switch up and that worked great for a few weeks. Then my glow plug light stopped working and it was crank city no start. I checked voltage on the harness weird and one has zero current. I will be picking up that e4 bit tomorrow and finishing this job. Hopefully that does the trick. Really want to get the new tires back running...

Instead of hunting down an inverted torx, I used a torx head screw and vice grips. Done and done.

You dont have to. You just gotta figure out how to ge the wiring to come off. He didnt explain near adequately.

+elvis pressedtalot You can use a Multi-meter to check continuity pin by pin to look for broken wires, check for voltage at the switch as it is operated. It's more common to have the switch wear out internally from it turning over and over again. After you take the column apart to access the wires you still might need to replace the switch assembly after all.
@@1AAuto found out this product .. "littelfuse" 175amp mega was the reason why the dash board wouldnt light up. like no power locks,light, radio, etc...... but after changing it. started right away. being its -19 the last 2 days. im blaming the battery now :/
@@1AAuto im sure of it . the brand name "littelfuse" 175amp . was at fault. first there was no power. but after using the test light.. 1 side of the fuse. lite up and the other line that leads to the alternator didnt. . so after changing that.. i have power to the dashboard now. and now 1 of 2 things is preventing it from starting.. (starter) or (Alternator). gonna guess it . having an alternator on hand. . starter is gonna have to wait

So my 95 Chevy k2500 cut out on me and turned back on when I was juggling the keys the lights turned on. I went to start it this morning and the light only turns on on the dash at a certain point when my key is turned to the off position and when I go to cycle the light cuts out. Would this be my problem?

When I put the lock cylinder back in it won’t turn so I can get the key out but it turns to the battery on position and start position, any ideas?
I had that same problem. I used a dead blow and tapped the cylinder with the key in a few times and got it to move.

You do not have to pull the steering wheel. There is no point at all (this is for trucks without airbags, I do not have them so I wouldn't know if it matters or not if they are there)
Order an E4 deep socket online before you tackle this. There is a special one made for these vehicles.

Can a bad ignition switch cause the starter to crank before I turn the key all the way? In “on” or “run” mode it starts cranking the engine and won’t stop unless I turn the key off. I think the starter is staying on and squealing when the engine starts. It literally starts to crank before I turn the key to start it. So weird.

Easy test if it is your ignition switch is not working . If you’re tac. does not work, speedometer is not working properly, shift indicator light is not working, and your transmission is not shifting or stuck in 3rd. Here’s what you do to test your ignition switch. With the engine running, hit the back of the Key and drive into the ignition switch. It might take a few sharp hits but see if your tech starts working. If it works I believe everything else will too. This procedure confirms your ignition switch is bad. It comes as an assembly wiring harness. I just ordered a wiring harness through (1A Auto )for $37 and will be putting it in shortly I believe this will cure of my problem.

What if the truck wont start bit it cranks i already changed the spark plugs and coils aslo the fuel pump and filter i haven't changed my ignotion switch even though it says it on the computer will reprogram the ignition swith when i get a new one ? Also do i have to change the ignition harness aswell?

Why didn’t you put the snap ring back on?
I have a 2000 suburban. I turn my key forward it starts fine. When it is started the key will not release back by its self. I will have to turn the key back manually when started. I did try to replace ignition itself and still continued. Would this be an ignition switch issue ? Thank you for any help.
I get the same thing without removing all that steering column now my truck won't start after I get that maybe a month later it's not getting no fire I think it's a anti-theft system help can somebody recommend somebody that can fix my truck they was on it for 2 years okay if there's somebody else that can help me please text me back
Ok, what do you do if you dont have the key?
Symptoms of a bad ignition switch are no tac or speedometer working to include odometer stops working also. Transmission feels like its slipping and not shifting correctly. Problem solved by replacing the switch. Was worried that it was the ECM much more expensive. not much content on the web about this fix.

This switch will cause trans codes like p1860 so if you think your trans is gone it’s probably this switch trans fuse runs with the cluster 🤷🏻♂️ who knew

make alignment marks on the steering wheel and the mounting bolt if you are annoyed by your steering wheel being one tooth out of truly straight.
1A Auto Will a bad ignition switch in a 1995 Chevy K1500 cause a 4L60e transmission to stick in 3rd gear and no Overdrive every now and then? My truck is fine but at the end of the day it'll stick in 3rd gear and not go into overdrive until I pull over and turn the truck off or unhook the battery after that it's shifts fine

@@1AAuto I just did it on my 2000 K 2500 and the my biggest problem was getting the torques 4 screws out holding the switch in. I didn't have any access to a long and extended one and a shorty was all i had so I literally had to grind it down. But I didn't take the steering wheel off. I really didn't want to, lol
