  • In this video I show how to replace an ignition starter switch I diagnosed in a previous video. This should cover 2000-2005 GMC Jimmy / Chevy S-10 / Isuzu Hombre / GMC Sonoma / GMC Envoy / Chevy S-10 Blazer. I am not positive though so double check with appropriate service manual before beginning.
I hope you find this video helpful as an aid in your repair and if you do please subscribe to our channel, like us on Facebook and give this video a thumbs up!

Hey man. I want to say a big thanks. Long story short and this is for everyone else also owning a 4.3. I have a 2001 GMC Jimmy 4DR 4x4... She was getting harder and harder to crank before she started. Finally a no start. So I was doing everything I could myself before biting the bullet and sending her off to the part swapper ( mechanic ).. New Fuel Filter.. New Air Filter.. Cleaned out the Throttle Body.. Cleaned out the MAF sensor.. New Ignition Coil.. Battery 7 mos old... Fuel Pump 7 mos old... New Distributor Cap and Rotor.. New Spark Plugs.. Even checked every plug for spark and all had spark.. All helped but EVENTUALLY still a no start. Replaced this Ignition Switch. BAM she fired right up and runs noticeably different / stronger. Granted I have to tap the gas while cranking but that's nothing to stress over. I literally gathered all the tools for the job, set my laptop up in the truck.. went step by step and it went smoothly. No feeling quite like having a "dead" vehicle then seeing her roar to life like she has been wanting to. So for everyone experiencing similar symptoms..in car repairs you are in the "Land of Could Be's"... but in reality.. for a no start or a very hard start it really could be the Ignition Switch! Thank you South Main Auto.. You do good work my friend.

Same! My 94 jimmy started with hard starts in the cold or wet. Did distributor, cap and rotor, wires and plugs, new cpi injector, so many sensors, ignition coil, fuel filter, and on and on. Then it started doing it when hot as well. The diagnoses video was a huge AH HA moment and I am about to replace my switch. Fingers crossed!

Great Video, Glad I found this video.. my 2001 Chevy S10 4.3L truck has the same problem.. Especially a Cold Start... Truck starts after so many cranks when it warms up. I find that the ignition switch when I turn to start, Truck makes a sound that it wants to start and turnover. After many tries it starts with a soft turning of the key and letting go. Vroom it starts. New Alternator.. it's charging a little over 14v, new battery, new distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and new wires and new ignition coil. Starter is 3 yrs old. Fuel pump works. These parts needed to be charged. I'll give it a try.! Our Mechanic has gotten ridiculous after COVID and overcharging his 20 yr customers.. We are young seniors from NY, we're not gonna get ripped off. I do most of the maintenance on my truck and my wife's 2009 Toy. Corolla.. Thanks for the video. God Bless Let me try with the test light first.

The only way I know how to thank you is on here. NO ONE got this problem right, I was told BCM, PCM, A-C blower module etc. My cruise quit first, then my a-c, then my temp gauge. I checked grounds and fuses out the wazoo and traced wires till I was seeing double. What made it more strange was, some of these accessories would be on/off, a-c (when) it worked, was only on high but would drop out. I bumped the key with my knee and the a-c came on/off. Called my nephew in Tn. (works for NAPA), asked if it could be the ignition switch, he said yes, I'm in La. Found your video (the ONLY one) with detail I needed. This was a level 8 diff for me but thanks to you and your video, it's all working as it should. I could have spent a fortune on this one WITHOUT getting fixed. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

Thank You. I had taken my 2002 GMC sierra into Wilkinson Gmc in Sanford NC to have the Ignition worked on, the key broke the ignition. I get the truck back it doesn't get driven a lot, It's a 2002 with 97.000 miles on it. So we had a bit of a crisis in Dec and when the truck died in the driveway I did nothing with for a month. We have 2 other vehicles. I take it back and they claim they checked into it after keeping it for a week. They claimed on the original repair they replaced the key cylinder and the pot metal housing but not the switch. They claim that the fact that the lights on the odometer stay on when the key is out of the ignition, draining the battery was due to a faulty switch that they will gladly replace for $350. They did nothing wrong. Today I went out there and pulled the plastic, I followed your method to get the switch to drop from the housing and mark the center gears with a sharpie. After playing with the gear and seeing where the slot with no teeth should be I reassembled it and what do you know. THE TRUCK RUNS PERFECT. The lcds on the odometer dont stay on anymore when the key is removed. My battery is saved and I didnt even need the switch. Wilkinson GMC in Sanford NC are incompetent and bunch lying turdbags who refuse to own up to their shoddy work. I should have known they were going to try and BS me when the head service writer refused to even look at what the problem was. Who hires a woman who has no mechanical background to write service tickets? What kind of a shop refuses to even look at the issue at hand? They even lost the tilt wheel plastic dohicky. Morons. Thanks again. I have sworn of GM vehicles for life.

Thanks for a great video Eric. I replaced mine this past weekend in a 98 s-10. After I still had a no start. Found the problem rite before dark. The switch had No Ground to it. I found if I ground the Brown wire on the ignition switch, it would then start. Need to check and make sure the Brown is the actual ground wire for the switch. Present diagrams are short of this information.

To say this video is excellent would be an understatement. I used my tablet to watch and pause the video through all of the steps. I was not able to find an E5 torx socket so i used a T25 sloted deck screw, as a bit, to remove the screw. In all of my many years working on cars, I have never had a need for an external torx socket. The Key-In Ignition switch was also a little tricky to remove, I had to use a mirror to see where the locking clip was located. Overall, this was and easy tasks, thanks mostly to this video. Ain't RUclips Great!!!

Haven't worked on this model. But had the same situation on my 85. Went through all the trouble to replace the key switch. Then figured out the actual switch was on the steering column a lot farther down. The slide in the switch had gotten corroded and would not contact the points needed to actually make it run. Just thought I would throw that out there. 😁

Had to do this with my 98 Lumina... switch was on the column and looked very different than your switch in the Jimmy. Talking about a ignition switch gets confusing on which switch we are talking about. Some people do not know there is 2 switches that work with each other to get a vehicle started. Great video on a column switch or started switch! Great diagnostic. After I saw the video.. I knew you had a switching problem!!

Likely the ignition switch. Good news is you don’t need a new key and all that.
At least I had similar issues on my 02 Sonoma. Exact same symptom not starting over. Key got janky and accidentally pulled out in accessories once.
Ignition switch. Not too bad of a replacement, although I had to partially remove the dash to take off the plastics on the steering column.
    Good luck!
EDIT: looking for an older style 1500, looks like it includes the ignition lock cylinder. I imagine that means you can likely remove the old one and put it in its place for the key staying the same.

Thanks for the great video you are a good teacher talking a lot is a plus.. had similar no crank issue on my 2001 S10 4.3L I had replaced the ignition switch and still had no crank and also no other dash lights ie: service engine ,abs ,security brake, etc, .After watching your electrical diagnoses I checked the fuse box under the hood and checked the 20A IGN fuse and it was blown. Replaced the fuse my dash lights all came on and it started right up.

Hey there, well thanks allot I really appreciate that. I am starting to enjoy sharing what little I now as much as I enjoy working on cars. The RUclips is very new to me so I assume at some point subscribers will come along haha. It actually just came to me one night talking with my wife and just being a little discouraged that I have never had anybody work for me that ever really had the passion to learn about cars and trucks any more than what they all ready knew and needed to, to get a pay check. Basically hoping when one of my boys (or girl) gets bigger they may have an interest but I just really want to work with some one and have fun, learn, grow and share have discussions about it... well just doesn't happen now a days, so here I am on the YT and hopefully through out the 1 billion users I might get discovered by like minded users and be able to interact. I know you didn't ask for it but hey that's my plan! Thanks again for watching and the subscription.

South Main Auto Repair I'm sure Eric that you'll have a big following when people discover your channel and the excellent content that it has to offer. I found your channel through Matt's channel, 'Schrodingers Box' where you're listed as one of the GEM's hidden treasures on RUclips. I agree with you on people having passion about anything nowadays. Looking forward to more videos from you and hang in there. With a little twist from the movie, 'Fields of Dreams', "if you build it, (your channel), people will come."

Another great video! I can appreciate your comment below about the passion of working on cars. Well, you've definitely found a great group here on YT. You can't lose(except time and effort)making these videos. It can turn into a 2nd income, plus it will generate business for your shop. Let's face it : just because people can watch repair videos on YT doesn't mean they'll all start doing it themselves and not come to the shop. People that take their cars to the shop will always do so,no matter what-few reasons : no time to work on their own cars,no skill,no patience,no room,no tools etc. Personally,I'd bring my car in a heart beat to your shop, knowing that you'll do a proper diagnostic and maybe even have the possibility to see the repair on YT! HOW COOL IS THAT!
One suggestion I would make,if you don't mind : I would tell people to disconnect the battery before doing this repair.

Thanks again for watching Nick Nicu ,
Not sure where this whole YT thing is heading but I am glad people are making use of it. It is hard sometimes to find good info out there and I know how frustrating that can be. Like Terry ( stuzman52 ) has mentioned or implied to me before, this forces you to know what the heck you are doing. In the sense that it makes it so it is not just another rouge repair. You have to know, as a "teacher" what the heck you are talking about and how the system works and be able or attempt to explain it. Believe it or not that is how this business gets. I was starting to loose my passion for working on cars because it is all I've done my whole life. I'd come to work fix a bunch of crap and go home haha. This has put the passion back in it because I know that people are interested in it! No one in my pier group really is. They just want stuff fixed and move on, don't really care how stuff works. I started to get that way too. Not now though, I was telling my wife this is really helping shine the light back on what I do day in and day out in our shop and making it fun again.

This is awesome. My 1998 Jimmy has had the exact same problem for over a year. BUT... Mine is intermittent... But, same thing when it messes up. No spark till letting off the ignition. Gonna grab a new switch today. I have already replaced the coil, ignition control module, crank trigger, entirely new distributor with all the guts including cap and rotor, the plugs, wires, and ground cables. Now if you could tell me how to make my gauges quit doing the macarena.....

Pretty useful info my Jimmie was a 94 completely loaded paid 800 bucks for it it would crank and start and run and as it ran would push gas out of the exhaust full stream the center port fuel injection spider was ok but the nozzle tabs alot of them were broken and the fuel return had been over heated and ruptured and burst in the intake plenum shooting returning fuel up into the open air intake ports and pushed the fuel through the fired cylinders out the exhaust .replaced the entire center port injection unit and return the following week the starter fell apart and the ignition switch quit loved that truck it was a cake walk to work on.

You are an outstanding teacher as well as a talented diagnostician. If you ever get tired of crawling in and around cars, you have a solid future in a classroom/lab garage. I think that you could inspire a lot of up and coming car guys and turn them into great mechanics - that is if they don't go on to automotive engineering. Keep on keepin' on!

I have no education, I would never even be considered in any type of teaching role.

    • @clintonandrews1538
      @clintonandrews1538 7 лет назад +1

For Universities and Community Colleges, there are two types of education and two types of qualification: AQ & PQ. Academic qualification (mortarboard, floppy hat and robes) and Professional qualification ("This is a test light. It is your friend. It will show you the light of knowledge and rescue you from the darkness of ignorance.") K-12 may require a teaching certificate, or may partner someone like you with a certified teacher, but for a Community College, I believe that you would be considered Professionally Qualified.
If you are ever tempted, you might wish to ask around a good auto program at a CC.

    • @SouthMainAuto

I attend some training classes that have a few teachers there from the local community college (auto program). I should ask them. However they may not want to answer because I am usually the one helping them through the class we are at haha.

Very direct and to the point. You explain everything perfectly. I love your videos, and you do know what you are doing, I hate videos where every shade tree mechanic think they know what they are doing, I hate watching videos, but they are the future for so many new idiots. I always like hearing in comments use delco or gm to replace your junk gm. The cost diagnosed by a shop, I lean toward a guess and replace attitude on some items, as I am one of those stupid old shade tree mechanics myself.

This is an excellent video. You explain things in a great way. My truck is in the same exact boat right now, but it is intermittent. I think my issues are stemming from the distributor. If it keeps happening after the distributor, I'll be watching this video about 3 more times, lol

I feel you will see that thing for some spider injectors soon from the way that startup sounds. It is my understanding from the key cycles keeping the fuel pressure up in the injector lines will expose the evil leak-down into the intake that is oh so common with these engines. Great videos, thanks for sharing.

Awesome video. Mine has power, lights inide/outside, bells and buzzers but when you turn the key from on to start everything goes dead and nothing, no turning over, no lights, nothing. After about 3-5 minutes, puff the lights and stuff come back to life again but if you turn to start once again everything goes dead instantly. I have yet to find the exact problem. I don't have a garage and it's 30° and I'm trying to get this done before winter gets here.

The guys that give thumbs down response are other mechanics that want to change out 4-5 extra parts and charge you more than you can sell the non running vehicle for. 1 hours worth of work if you know what your doing. And have the right tools.
