Have you ever thought about the fact that there aren't actually so many trucks to choose from like there are cars? THATS why their salesnumbers are so high. If you would combine all cars, crossovers and SUVs that have been sold to private individuals you'll probably get a hell of a lot more than trucks.

  • @LR4TLC200

I'll tell you the real reasons why people in america prefer trucks to cars:
    - fuel is cheap over there
    - trucks offer more space in the passenger compartment
    - trucks are tall (high seating)
    - americans like to run things over or pull them or tow some stuff

    • @Y10Q
      @Y10Q 8 лет назад +8

+igeekone nope, the only reason people keep trucks around longer is because they cost more to buy. Corolla for example, nobody keeps them for 20 years, costs $18k to buy. But a truck that easily costs twice as much, you generally wanna keep it running longer. Most trucks today are $40k. It better last 20 years.

I love this channel and appreciate how hard these gentlemen work. That said, here are 5 reasons you shouldn't buy a truck as a daily driver:
    1. You almost never tow, haul, or off road. You just want a truck.
    2. You do a lot of urban driving and parking. Small cars are best for that.
    3. You like driving a vehicle that handles well, not one that handles well "for a truck."
    4. Gas mileage is a priority for you. Cars are lighter and have smaller engines.
    5. You can buy a VERY nice car for the price of a "luxury" truck (50k+)

Growing up my family had two vehicles: A '92 chevy 1500 W/T and an 85 cavalier wagon. My mom mostly drove the wagon, my dad mostly drove the pickup. Maybe it's just nostalgic bias but I think if your household has two vehicles, that's really the best arrangement (not including who drives what, just which two vehicles you get).
My dad always gripes about how you just can't buy a really basic utilitarian pickup anymore. His old 1500 was a two-seat only, vinyl interior with rubber floor mats, AM radio only, long-bed flareside with a V6 and it satisfied all of his needs perfectly.
Now as a single guy working a desk job living in a more urban area, I own a '96 subaru outback and a '00 civic coupe, and honestly I barely drive the outback. Smaller is really better when it comes to heavy traffic and tight parking. The car is agile, handles great, and fits into tight spots.

So a Camry is $30 K, and a F-150 is $50 K, but you can get a $10 K rebate on the truck. Well, that's still $10 K more than the Camry, isn't it? You are right about the women being attracted to guys who drive trucks. I read an article that women know that trucks are expensive, so if a man is driving a truck then he must have extra money to burn, so the women (gold diggers) go for those guys and try to marry them (and of course, later divorce them and get massive Alimony too. ) Live and learn.
I'm a Canadian guy and I just love trucks, but i drive a small car because I love the feeling of driving a go-cart on the road, a feeling you just cannot get from a truck. Ever go to one of the go-cart tracks and have so much fun that you wish you could drive one home? Well, that's what I do every day, its a blast ! We only live a short time so you've got to have as much fun and enjoyment out of life while you can, right? The trick is to get a car that is fun like a go-cart at LEGAL speeds (within the speed limits).

I wonder if the "Truck" statistics were inflated by all the SUV's who use body-on-frame construction that all truck's use.
For 50k you get luxury car interior and technology (not in powerwagon) however for half the price you can get a similar truck that can do all the same things, but it just comes in white and is 2doors.
Sadly, anything more than $20k is wasted money considering all the quality vehicles around that price range.

Top reason why trucks are more popular than cars: GASOLINE IS UNDER $10 PER GALLON. That's just about it.
Love the fact that the new Ford F-150 is built out of Aluminum instead of steel. Only EXOTIC cars costing over $100,000 are usually made from All-aluminum, and now you can get that quality of engineering in a truck. Cool !

I disagree with most of the points on this list... now I'm not saying trucks are bad vehicles or that they shouldn't be as popular as they are I'm just saying that I personally believe the reasons they are so popular are not the ones listed above. Full disclosure: I prefer cars over trucks as my personal use does not involve any towing whatsoever and I prefer the feel of a sportier drive to an imposing stance, also I live in Canada so for a few months every year driving in snow is a reality and as much as you like your truck, RWD with little weight on the rear axle brings bad handling in snow (slick roads and offroad require different amount of traction delivered in different ways). I have a subaru that is a dream to drive in gravel, snow and mud (not the deep stuff you offroad guys are thinking about - wet country roads). So to address a few of your points and why I think they aren't necessarily tied to the success of this type of vehicle I'll start with this: as far as offroad capabilities go I will agree trucks have a lot of ground clearance, (optional on purchase) locking diffs, a good amount of travel in the suspension as well as a lot of handy-to-have ofrroad features and that trucks far surpass the capabilities of cars offroad, however the LARGE MAJORITY of truck owners don't use their trucks offroad. If every truck was used as an offraod rig the trails would be overflowing. And this counter-argument applies to the versatility of and capability of having a bed: what percentage of truck owners have loaded their beds to full capacity or even to the point that an SUV would be overflowing? I will continue by saying that the value and amount of luxury found in trucks isn't particularly amazing; taking your example of having $50K to spend, an Audi A6 will have much more creature comforts, higher quality leather, an interior that is well refined and has the overall flawlessness that Audi is known for providing. No matter how much money you put into an F-150 (top selling truck taken as example), it's still a ford. As you stated yourself in your top 5 likes and dislikes video about the Raptor, the plastic on the knobs seems about as luxurious as the cap of your Pure Leaf iced tea bottle. You may have leather and heated/cooled seats but it never will never bring the feeling absolute luxury. At one point it was mentioned (about trucks) that the ladies like 'em... Really? I guess it depends on where you're from but going back to the 50k example an Audi is always seen as more classy than a ford... "size matters" doesn't always apply. From the financial aspects that you hit with the points on tax rebates and available discounts on purchase (both of which I agree with) I'd also like to point out that the price of gas is also a driving factor (pun not intended). In America gas is cheap compared to, say, Europe... so having a gas-guzzler isn't much more expensive than a save-the-whales prius. I think you hit it right with the 'Merica side of things. Trucks have a "cool factor" to them. Usually bought by men, they represent what most men want to feel like: tall, imposing and powerful. People want to climb into a vehicle that represents them and makes them smile. Nothing wrong with buying something that makes you feel good, in fact that's the best reason to buy something in my opinion. Also, I know this maybe wasn't the point of the video but it was one of my interpretations when I read the title: I saw this as maybe trying to explain to "outsiders"/non-americans why trucks are so popular over there. And the main point to that is that they are not a hassle to own. If you look at European city streets for example you'd have trouble driving a raptor around in there and GOOD LUCK trying to find a parking spot in which it fits. I mean, Subaru Imprezas are considered large cars in some places... In America roads are generally wider and parking lots/spots are definitely bigger. Trucks are also more common which means you won't stand out as much, you don't need to be an egocentric show-off to have one and you don't give the impression of being one either. Anyway, long read but if you made it this far I'd like to know your opinion on mine.

Ok, cars in general are not marked up as much as people think, trucks do tend to have a higher mark up from factory price, the most I've seen was about 4k in mark up on a 62k truck... If you were to do that math that's not even a 1% mark up. Jewelry, furniture, and shoes are market up more than 100% and people negotiate STILL car prices... People..

+A Hernandez Where have you been looking? The manufacturers make over $18,000 in pure profit on an average sale of $45,000, and you claim they only marked it up by $4,000 on a $62,000 truck? I call bullshit on that. I can tell you right now there is no way these trucks contain enough features to justify their prices. I used to manage my family's dealership years ago, and I can tell you here and now the mark up is crazy ridiculous. Tell me, if the dealership only marked it up by $4,000 and incentives knock off $11,000 plus the buyer haggles another $2-3,000 off, then how do the manufacturers and dealerships stay profitable? Most trucks are priced between 200-300% of what they cost to make.

+Daniel Bell I currently work for Spitzer Autoworld in Homestead. It's a Chrysler Dodge jeep Ram store, but I used to work for Armstrong Ford, and I had access to invoices, rebates are not dealership "losses" they're manufacturer losses. Dealerships can only work with the amount of Mark up from invoice, supposedly factory invoice is what it "costs" to make the vehicle but I am sure it is much less than what's on that paper, because our auto manufacturers are still profitable. And rebates is just moving opportunity costs around from one vehicle to another..

I'm not from america but i know pickup are better than any other car because
    1. It's taller. In my country, there are some road which has a hole that reach up than 1ft deep and for a normal car, it's dangerous because if you didn't realised the hole when you drive up to 80km/h @ 49.7mph you might hit the bumper or even worse, lost control of the car
    2. Carry anything that you want. Last year, one of my family had a motorcycle crash and the motorcycle can't move because the impact of the crash broke the front forks. And this is what are pickup truck for. You can put something less than 450kg @ 992.08lbs (correct me if i'm wrong) inside the trunk of the truck.
Last but not least, it's a cool-looking vehicle for me. I know the other categories have much better design than the pickup but i like the pickup design even more regardless where it came from.

"Overall value" is such an overused bad argument. Not many people buy a car for 50,000 dollars. And for those who do - OF COURSE a truck that you can use when working has more value than a luxury sports car! How is that even an argument? But that argument doesn't hold up versus other cars like vans or suv's. We should be talking utility, because that's how you compare cars. Price and utility. I bought my old VW car for 2700€ was super comfortable and trust worthy. My dad bought his van for 8000€. I have hauled all kinds of stuff with the van. A large air pressure tank, my dad once fit two motorcycles in van, I've stacked it chock full with furniture when moving apartments, free from rain, we've hauled our boat with it. I'm not saying trucks are bad. Not at all. But I am saying they're not worth 50,000 dollars unless you buy it for comfort and luxury.

@Kaleb Swager Exactly! If you get a good reliable old car, van or the like for 2-15 000, why would you ever spend more? That money has to come from somewhere. 50 grand? Are you gonna spend a few years salary on comfort? And who are we, are we desperate housewives who only care about glimmer and glam? Only thing I care about is if the seats are comfy!

Trucks have their perks but I wouldn’t want a truck if I am not constantly hauling stuff to full capacity on the truck bed, especially in the city where parking room is limited and heavy traffic conditions makes me waste more money on fuel. Also new trucks are priced ridiculous high, it makes more sense to own one only if your job specifically requires using a truck bed.

Many people own both a truck and a car, like myself. The car is for commuting and the truck is for well, truck stuff like hauling and going places you wouldn't want or couldn't take your car. New trucks are so expensive though, I couldn't imagine buying one. I have a 99 Silverado Z71 extended cab with 5.3 and 3.73 and it does everything I want a truck to do and I have less than 4K in it. Even compact trucks like the Chevy Colorado and Toyota Tacoma are in excess of 35K. I guess they're called "mid-size" now though. New trucks are very nice but I feel are way overpriced.

I'm looking at some sites about it, and it goes by "Gross Vehicle Weight" which includes full fluids, all passengers and cargo, the Jeep's rating is 6500 pounds, so it seems like it would qualify. If you look into it, it seems like you have to use it for business. I'm not sure if that includes using it for your commute to a regular job. The guys at TFLCar could probably make a case that 100% of their driving is for work since they are reviewing cars. I would agree with that. For everyone else, I'm not sure what you would do to qualify. Also, I don't see anyone saying anything about doing it with a used vehicle. Even with this, I don't think I could afford a new one.

    c) there's a great spirit of "we can do it, let's go and construct all kinds of stuff", so a lot of people will buy a truck coz they imagine using it for a lot of stuff
    d) lots of parking space available in America
    e) it's easier to load a dead deer in the truck bed than to tie it on a roof of a small hatchback
    f) trucks are freakin cool and useful!

I like your ranking where each point doesn't make sense, and yet everyone buys a truck. Amortization doesn't apply to most buyers. You get a commanding view of the road in any SUV. And discounts are only because the carmakers make more profit on it, meaning ripping you off. Well done. I still wonder why people buy it then.

There's definitely more Ford Chevy and ram here in California I don't know where you get this idea from.

hum... Yeah... what about interior room? Americans tend to be big. Both tall and fat. Trucks just simply have more room in them. and safety of course. If you are in a truck and some idiot texting crosses over the double yellow coming head on at you you want to be in a truck. Durability Trucks just tend to last longer without needing any real expensive work.

Kenneth Draper In a lot of europe the roads are very old from before cars were around or popular. They tend to be very very narrow and wider stuff just will not fit. But yeah here in the US that is not the case.
