One of the best-written songs of all time. Anyone who has had some struggles, done some drifting, messed up a good thing with a good woman- or just had a wild one we couldn’t hold onto- and those of us who have made some bad choices will attest to how well this song is written.

So glad you have discovered the goldmine that is Bob Seger and his Silver Bullet Band. You’ll be listening for the rest of your life. "Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then." Seger wrestled with and stressed over that lyric. He asked a friend if it was any good, and whether or not it belonged in the song. He thought it was bad grammar. However, his friend said, "Who cares? It's the best line in the song!" So Bob kept it.
Indeed, my friend. So many things learned over 63 years that I wish I never had to know: the man I loved and later married turned out to be a major disappointment, beloved friends and family lost to time, distance and death, loss of a sense of freedom to obligations and responsibilities, the end of innocence, rapidly approaching sunset of life and so many more.
Maybe as you get older, you discover that things that you thought were true or possible, just aren't. And you're not sure you're better off for knowing.
I nominated him for a Kennedy Center for thr Performing Arts award this year of 2020. COVID-19 has been a monster. If he got this award in the future it would be another feather in his cap. Minutes after the birth of my first son I was with him when they took him to get washed and cleaned off. I was at a little nurses station when they handed him too me, it had been a long and difficult day for him and his mom. As I sat there holding my little man this song comes playing out the little boom box. I asked the nurse to turn it up a little and at 3am this is the first song my boy ever heard. I’m not perfect now, but I was far from it back then. I’ll never forget that few minutes as long as I live. Trying to have fair and following winds now and days.
"Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends, found myself further and further from my home" Been through that. Realized why people told me I'd be lucky to have 1 or 2 real friends as an adult. Had to write some people off and disappear from them. I'm better now than ever and Thank God for my small family and my 2 REAL friends!

Bob's talent is far more than his singing or lyrics. The actual way he plays, and directs his band, is purposeful in how the presentation makes us feel. Dips in notes, timing, rises and lulls. Bob Seger is a legend for many reasons.
Exactly he and his band are so flexible I've seen them perform huge venues and small intimate ones in the same tour. They are just plain musical professionals.I have seen them three different tours with about five years in between each and every time they sounded great. Performances were always enjoyable.
Jeez Jamel your killing me...oh man taking me way, way back....sometimes it's painful to think back to those days...because you can't get them back.....I'm not going to lie , I've shed a couple of tears listening to this with you today, but all good my friend, and I appreciate ya.

“Her Strut” is probably my fav of his. It’s talking about a woman moving of her own will, towards goals, on her own fuel. Folks respect her, yet they can’t help but watch her in motion. It has some fun play on words, too.

Bob was a runner from high school days. Many of his songs have the running, sailing and nature. He has had many piano players and Bob himself rocks those keys!
That doesn't mean he's not working. He quit touring because he's got a bad back. He had to cut his final tour short because he had a herniated disc that was pinching some nerves.
Beautiful lyrics. The line " Those drifters days are past me now, I got so much more to think about. Deadlines and commitments, what to leave in, what to leave out" hits me like a ton of lead as I get older

He makes you feel like you were there or wanted to be there. 🎹 player was amazing. I think we are all running against the wind today. See you in the next one 🙂
At 15 I thought I knew what these words meant, at 56 they hit me hard. Like the song says, "wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" - Thanks, Bob.
***Don’t forget Bob’s “Roll Me Away”! Iconic biker’s song about personal freedom and making mental origin based decisions. I was lucky enough to see him in concert just last year, it was definitely a once in a lifetime event.
The late, great Glenn Frey of the Eagles, who was a good friend of Bob's singing backup harmony vocals at the end there. And he was also the one who came up with the idea of having the guitar play along with the piano in the solo.
@@richardsteiner1729 did not know that. Detroit, for all its flaws, is a great music town. Bob, is probably the best that they ever produced because some major talent heralds from that tow Temptations, Supremes, Tops, Marvin Gaye and so many others. Thanks for the heads up.
Hey Jamel, so glad you did this vid on Bob Seger's amazing "Against the Wind." That boy sang that song from his heart and I can feel every word. Sad, proud, and like fine wine.
His version of "We've Got Tonite" -- the original, of course -- is incredible. Appreciate you discovering and appreciating one of the best ever. Kudos.
This may be my favorite Bob Seger song and the line "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" is just plainly one of the finest lines in music. This is such a personal and honest song that after so many years it still grabs my attention.
Ah, man! You keep bringing up these songs - the music that shaped our lives. People who wonder why we boomers are so, so disappointed with the last few decades of this current musical wasteland have never spent the time to really listen to the music from our youth. Thank you for listening and reacting to this. It truly was a golden time for music. The best part of it was, songs like these weren't something that happened once or twice a year the way it is now. This type of song; the incredible musical arrangements, the storytelling, the poetry inherent in the lyrics, the truth at the core - that was the standard. Every week there would be a song just as good, just as profound and heartfelt as this one. God, I miss it.
@@axfn93 It truly was. It was a golden time for music, from the mid-sixties up to the eighties. Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Cream, The Beatles, The Who, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Moody Blues, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Simon and Garfunkel, Santana, The Grateful Dead, The Doors, too many more to name. All of them musical icons, with lyrics that rolled off the tongue like fine wines and music that cut straight to the heart They spoke the truth of the times. They all filled stadiums and fields as far as the eye could see. Simon and Garfunkel's final concert drew a crowd estimated at 500,000 people. Two people, one guitar, holding half a million people in the palm of their hands as they performed one hit song after another for over two hours. The Beatles on-line performance of 'Let It Be' was listened to by one and a half billion people all over the world. I doubt we'll ever see a time like that again. Sorry you missed it.
westcoastScott I was born in 69- and even I’m disappointed with music today. I’m so glad my parents listened to these songs- I’m still listening today. My kids even know who all these artists are. They will definitely live on- when most of this current stuff is gone. You ‘Boomers’ had the best music. ❤️
He was so underappreciated and was a big part of the soundtrack of my childhood, his stories were very personal and were based on his own experiences, at that time in the world his fans could relate or at least understand better what the life of a rocker might be like. And yes Bob were all still running against the wind.
Mr Seger one of the many "prides" of Detroit as ir pertains to music... along with ALL of Motown, Kid Rock M & M etc... Seger is one of the forefathers of the Detroit Rock Music scene for sure Glad you are finding him Sir.
My husband and I finally saw him in concert last summer on his last tour....He was amazing! And our hearts were full - No one like Bob Seger! Roll Me Away is one of my favorites :)
Bob Seger has a beautiful and soulful voice. And his lyrics are always top notch. He is so beloved because he writes about things that most working, struggling people understand. As well as love, and loss. I wish more younger people would give him a chance. They might be really surprised. Bob is Legend! ❤
When you talked about closing your eyes and listening it made me think how really good songs (stories) draw you in and you begin to relive moments in your life that they touch!
Jamel, you always do your best to respect and appreciate the song you're reacting to. It was obvious this one touched you the same way it has touched all of us. One of Brother Bob's signature songs.
He's a GOAT to me I'm a old 60yr old Woman now,but growing up I use to say...I'd cut my pinkys off just to go see him in live in concert... He's always been my number one Singer of all times.... Love watching your reactions to him, thank you and hope you have a blessed day 🙏
The musicianship is completely united. That takes 100% dedication and tends to be unappreciated. The chorus was coordinating with the drummer very timely.A great composition and deserve its credit in weighted gold.Definately!
You love his storytelling and the way he makes you feel young again. For this, I can only recommend, "We've Got Tonight". Keep up the great work, brother!
Seger's music was also featured in the film " Mask" soundtrack. One of my all time favorites was "Roll Me Away" from hi "The Distance" album. A MUST listen.
If you want a journey like you did with Bob than look up Elo... electric light orchestra. They have many great songs.. Evil woman, turn to stone, telephone line, living thing, don't bring me down, strange magic, Do Ya, Mr. Blue sky, hold on tight....
The line, " I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then." Bob Seger didn't want in the song. He felt it was out of place. But the band insisted on it. Turned out to be the key line of the song and probably the one most quoted of his catalogue.
I was listening to Bob Seger on Alexa earlier this week ...I had been listening for over an hour and my nephew (21yrs old) came out of his bedroom and said .."you're listening to Bob?" ... I said "Yep"....about half an hour later I yelled at Alexa...."Alexa...stop!!...I'm done rememberin'".....My nephew came home last night and said...Bob Seger came on his car radio when he was coming home from work...and he was laughing to himself about His Aunt Bridget being "done with rememberin'"
I love Main Street. Did ever since the first time I heard it. The melody and the sax and the rhyming, everything about it is beautiful. But, once I started to really think about the lyrics, I realized its a song about a guy who's acting much like a stalker, which is pretty creepy.
This song makes me remember some very special girls from the 70's, the loves of a misspent youth. Bob is one of the best! Thanks for the listen! It's one of the three songs my sisters say describe me.
I'm from Juaritos Mexico....I heard this songfirst time when i was 11 or 12 years old...And it touched my heart...since then, I cry everytime I hear this song..
Seger "retired" not too long ago (2018) but you never know... He actually lives not that far from me (I'm in Oakland County, MI) and it's only a 10-15 minute drive to the City/Village he lives in these days. Bob has tons of hits - and if you've EVER heard a Chevy commercial between 1980-2010...then you've heard Bob before. One of his most well-known songs is used in their commercials. Some songs to consider: Shame on the Moon Shakedown Main Street Like A Rock Old Time Rock and Roll Turn The Page Katmandu
The. first concert I attended, the Against the Wind tour '77. Some standouts for me were Alto Reed's sax on Turn the Page, the huge disco ball used during We Got Tonight, and of course, Against the Wind. My then 14 year old self was blown away and made a lifelong fan!
I got to meet Bob Seger and the original Silver Bullet Band's drummer Charlie Martin about a half million years ago at Al Neely music in Ann Arbor. Both are really great guys👍
Six months late to comment on this, but it just hit me really hard. I heard this song many times in my teens and 20's. I'm 54 now. I finally get it. Wish I didn't.

***Don’t forget Bob’s “Roll Me Away”! Iconic biker’s song about personal freedom and making mental origin based decisions.
I was lucky enough to see him in concert just last year, it was definitely a once in a lifetime event.
I love watching you hear music for the first time. I wish I could go back and hear these songs for the first time again.
I did not know I good we, I, had it back then. We were blessed.
The late, great Glenn Frey of the Eagles, who was a good friend of Bob's singing backup harmony vocals at the end there. And he was also the one who came up with the idea of having the guitar play along with the piano in the solo.
Seger and Frey both from Detroit.
@@richardsteiner1729 did not know that. Detroit, for all its flaws, is a great music town. Bob, is probably the best that they ever produced because some major talent heralds from that tow Temptations, Supremes, Tops, Marvin Gaye and so many others. Thanks for the heads up.
Two greats! Love and still can make me cry.....😢❤
Hey Jamel, so glad you did this vid on Bob Seger's amazing "Against the Wind." That boy sang that song from his heart and I can feel every word. Sad, proud, and like fine wine.
That line, “wish I didn’t know now...” gains meanings as you age. Take it from an old fart.
Amen brother ✌️🧡
Ditto
Yeah man
His version of "We've Got Tonite" -- the original, of course -- is incredible. Appreciate you discovering and appreciating one of the best ever. Kudos.
You know that the only purpose of that song is to talk a girl into a one night stand right?
This may be my favorite Bob Seger song and the line "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" is just plainly one of the finest lines in music. This is such a personal and honest song that after so many years it still grabs my attention.
“Wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then”. Man can I relate. Bob Seger is special.
Man, right in the heart. This one gets me every time.
Jamal try " Katmandu " or my personal favorite " Fire Lake ". Bob Seger is an American Icon a true poet
Katmandu is my favorite 🧡🙏
@@stevenjenks9336 Yeah real high energy song the live version for me
Fire Lake is about living and dying and going to hell, and if you do it right, they are all the same thing. Amazing song...
Yes katmandu
Drove all day from Florida to Virginia and back the next day to see him last year on his farewell.tour. One of the best concerts I've been to.
I was at both!!
It must have been amazing...
Amen Brother
I wish I could travel back than
westcoastScott I was born in 69- and even I’m disappointed with music today. I’m so glad my parents listened to these songs- I’m still listening today. My kids even know who all these artists are. They will definitely live on- when most of this current stuff is gone. You ‘Boomers’
had the best music. ❤️
He was so underappreciated and was a big part of the soundtrack of my childhood, his stories were very personal and were based on his own experiences, at that time in the world his fans could relate or at least understand better what the life of a rocker might be like.
And yes Bob were all still running against the wind.
I do enjoy seeing a young man exposed to the music of my youth. Takes me back to when I first heard these songs. Well done!
Mr Seger one of the many "prides" of Detroit as ir pertains to music... along with ALL of Motown, Kid Rock M & M etc... Seger is one of the forefathers of the Detroit Rock Music scene for sure Glad you are finding him Sir.
Ah you left out the best GFR teasing but Grand Funk is the best to me.
So important to remember Iggy Pop (along with the Stooges) and MC5.
@@originalhgc oh yeah. Birth of punk rock
Ted Nugent?
He may be from Detroit but Kid Rock doesn't deserve to be mentioned with Seger or even Eminem. Never understood the appeal.
My husband and I finally saw him in concert last summer on his last tour....He was amazing! And our hearts were full - No one like Bob Seger! Roll Me Away is one of my favorites :)
Saw him last year in New Orleans and even though in his seventies, he put on one hell of a show!
@@Brotha_Teresa YES he did!!
Roll Me Away is my jam!
He was my husband’s uncle’s next door neighbor. Nice guy, low profile so to speak. Love life, yes I do!!
Annie
Bob Seger has a beautiful and soulful voice. And his lyrics are always top notch. He is so beloved because he writes about things that most working, struggling people understand. As well as love, and loss. I wish more younger people would give him a chance. They might be really surprised. Bob is Legend! ❤
One of my all time favorite songs.....
I've been to 6 of his concerts, 4 in the 70's and 2 in the 2000's. His songs are a part of me.
When you talked about closing your eyes and listening it made me think how really good songs (stories) draw you in and you begin to relive moments in your life that they touch!
Randy Gabbert this brings me back to being a teenager and listening to my music in the dark with headphones. Nothing like it.
Once inside a woman's heart
A man must keep his head
Heaven opens up the door
Where angels fear to tread. It's shame on the moon by Bob.💛💛💛
Another great piano song
One of my favorites. Not widely known outside of true Seger fans.
Bob is absolutely one of my favorites for 40 years now, but Rodney Crowell actually wrote Shame On The Moon
I love how he gives respect to the musician and puts his own introspective view into his reviews.. Great job Jamal.. Again
The piano in this song is some kind of terrific. Great song. Great artist.
Bob was a staple for me back in the day, love him and your reaction!!
This is always been my favorite song of his. So sweet melodic, passionate, and great lyrics.
Also Katmandu
If you want a journey like you did with Bob than look up Elo... electric light orchestra. They have many great songs.. Evil woman, turn to stone, telephone line, living thing, don't bring me down, strange magic, Do Ya, Mr. Blue sky, hold on tight....
dont forget i turn to stone
Good call
my music he didn’t forget
And Shine A Little Love
It would be interesting to see Jamel's reaction to Fire on High and watch how an instrumental greets his soul.
All of Bob Segers song have a lot of musicality, great instrumental sections, talented musicians who carry the lyrics far .
A very unique voice with loads of talent!!! Love the grit in his voice!!
He was on the piano when I seen him sing this song. Pure Genius!!!
I saw him in a small venue concert in 80's. OMG, one of my all time favorite converts.
One of my favorite songs when I was young... Seger is one of the Best man...
I saw him on his final tour. He's 73 and sounds the same, amazing and Alto Reed can still rock the saxophone
Main Street has a real feel of the Midwest.
Except for hanging out at strip clubs, I feel like I'm there when I hear that song. Never got into strip clubs, they don't have "To go" boxes...
I love Main Street, I was told it was a true story 🧡🙏
I'm from the midwest and lived this song, for a short spell.
I love Main Street. Did ever since the first time I heard it. The melody and the sax and the rhyming, everything about it is beautiful.
But, once I started to really think about the lyrics, I realized its a song about a guy who's acting much like a stalker, which is pretty creepy.
Main Street is a highly underrated masterpiece.
Love when I see lyrics move in a persons soul and speak to them....70’s music had so much of that....would love to see you do some Boston
He paints such vivid word pictures. A true genius.
This song has always spoke to my soul. Brings tears to my eyes. It's about life.
Thanks for great reviews, great picks...Against the Wind, one of the all time all times! Craig Frost on the piano, Seger on vocals.
This song makes me remember some very special girls from the 70's, the loves of a misspent youth. Bob is one of the best! Thanks for the listen! It's one of the three songs my sisters say describe me.
One of my favorite songs by him and We've Got Tonight!!!!!
I'm from Juaritos Mexico....I heard this songfirst time when i was 11 or 12 years old...And it touched my heart...since then, I cry everytime I hear this song..
The piano is such a soothing instrument. Bob is a awesome writer of songs .
His song We’ve Got Tonight is one of his best.
Yes!
Yep.
Some songs to consider:
Shame on the Moon
Shakedown
Main Street
Like A Rock
Old Time Rock and Roll
Turn The Page
Katmandu
Bianca Horkan I saw him last summer and he was as good as ever
@@Wolfncsupack42 Nice!
Fire Lake is my favorite Seger tune. So simple but really good.
Agree. Got to do Fire Lake!
Fire Lake was one my mother played a lot.. the Eagles sing backing vocals on that track!
Bob Seger has one of the best voices ever...smooooooth every time, every song 🎵
One if the best most beautiful songs of all times, so glad u loved it too man...
Bob Seger is my heart! I just named my Harley "Night Moves!" So happy Jamel AKA Jamal loves him, too.
He actually just had his final tour in 2019. Glad I got to see him at least once.
The. first concert I attended, the Against the Wind tour '77. Some standouts for me were Alto Reed's sax on Turn the Page, the huge disco ball used during We Got Tonight, and of course, Against the Wind. My then 14 year old self was blown away and made a lifelong fan!
@Doug Kirk lol u are right. Must have been the clouds of smoke I was sitting in 😎
I got to meet Bob Seger and the original Silver Bullet Band's drummer Charlie Martin about a half million years ago at Al Neely music in Ann Arbor. Both are really great guys👍
Six months late to comment on this, but it just hit me really hard. I heard this song many times in my teens and 20's. I'm 54 now. I finally get it. Wish I didn't.
Best part in forest gump when hes runnimg the slow mo run with the short shorts and the beautiful scenery in the back ground childhood was amazing i never forget those cherished memories
"Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" has always been one of my all-time favorite lyrics.
My favorite line from this song is “never worried about paying, or even how much I owe”
