This is a quote from Bob Seger about the song, talking to his Ex long time Girlfriend who is referenced in the song : Janey says to me all the time, 'You allow more people to walk on you than anybody I've ever known.' And I always say it's human nature that people are gonna love you sometimes and they're gonna use you sometimes. Knowing the difference between when people are using you and when people truly care about you, that's what "Against the Wind" is all about. The people in that song have weathered the storm, and it's made them much better that they've been able to do it and maintain whatever relationship. To get through is a real victory

You should watch Seger’s video of “Turn the Page@. The song is from 1972, but it didn’t catch on until 1976’s album “Live Bullet”. (That’s a much better version).
The music video is from 1995, but with flashbacks to a much younger Bob performing in the days when he was still riding around in a bus with the band, all over the States. The “walk into a restaurant” section is inspired by a real incident. And in the flashbacks you can see the hairstyle Bob sported in the early 70’s.
His most autobiographical song, from the well known ones is probably “Night Moves”. Seems like most songs start with some piece of real life, but get much more cinematic and interesting through the songwriting process. Some find his music whine-y. I find it wistful. He’s rightly in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Bob had sold over 75 million records during his career. So,, yeah, he’s big.
I think you hit it correctly when talking about how Springsteen is more intense. It’s a background thing. Bob is clearly a Midwesterner (Detroit); Bruce a Jersey boy. That’s what gives Springsteen’s music greater urgency generally.
Seger’s music tends to come from more folksy, rural roots while Springsteen’s foundation is more urban, multicultural (doo-wop, R&B).
I realize this is a gross over-generalization but I think one can discern the differences. Either way, it’s all rock and I love what Seger has produced. Great voice, top rate musician, great song writer.

*Harri* My personal *THANK YOU* for this sir.!!! You deserve some answers to the questions you posed, so here goes..... The song is a semi autobiographical of Bob's life, early girlfriend, being a runner in school *BUT* in the grand scheme of things it is about what we all face, dealing with what life throws at us, growing up and having different outlooks on things as one gets older.... Bob actually started before Bruce in the mid 60's but they were contemporaries in the 70's and he was gigantic at that time.! It's actually very cool you mentioned Bruce Springsteen as alot of critics had looked to 3 artists at the time as being { their words }, the new *Bob Dylan* one was Bruce, another Bob and the third was Jackson Browne...! Bruce has out sold Bob in total albums by about 3 to 1 but Bob has sold over 50,000,000 so you get the idea.! He came out of Detroit by the way......
*I REALLY THANK YOU FOR THIS HARRI* I will be here forever my friend.! Bob has so much more to show you, I would suggest *Turn the Page* next but you need rest bro, I didn't know you had that many requests, so I will go the Patreon way when I have one moving forward.! *Much Respect* David .....

Most songwriters write about the human experience in a way that often transcends actually having lived through it. This song speaks to so many common human experiences and failings, and successes, that I think he probably lived something like we all do.

When I was a kid, he used to practice in my best friends basement in Ann Arbor Michigan, though it was before he was a star. I've ve always had an affinity for Bob's music. He was a big deal, and is on Wikipedia's list of best selling album sales of all time. I/2 the sales of Springsteen.

Bob Seger was one of them gems who never got the MSM behind him. His followers were pure believers of his art.
Now decades later he is still getting his due paid with new listeners.
    True Story-teller.
    Maybe more of a Life-teller.
Play his songs on your next road trip or just driving in the car on the highway.
    Tell me how that feels.

Bob was in the middle of releasing hit records through my basic training and active Army days with me joining basic at age twenty far away from my home town where I continued playing pool after work over beers and dance floors. I loved distance running for kicks and grins with Bob Seger in the headphones. His lyrics seemed to fit what I was up to or how I felt in someone else's small big town while off duty with my paycheck to spend.

Bob Seger is a Detroit native. His contemporary was another Detroit native named the late Glenn Frey. They lived in different parts of Detroit, not meeting each other until the 1970s.
Both of them play guitar 🎸, bass guitar 🎸 and piano 🎹
They, Jackson Browne, JD Souther and Don Henley wrote Heartache Tonight for The Eagles. Bob Seger sang this in the Kennedy Honors as a Tribute to The Eagles. 🦅
Bob Seger hits include Like a Rock, We Got Tonight, Hollywood Nights, Shame on the Moon 🌙 (late Glenn Frey was backing singer here).

He was a x-country runner in high school, and he said he literally was trying to write a song about actually running. Then he figured that was a little corny and decided to make it more of a metaphor.

    See grrrr
Bob and Bruce are friends. They met in 1978 when Springsteen was in the Detroit area. He ended up at Seger’s concert at Pine Knob. (There are a couple great backstage pics if you Google) I think Seger went to Springsteen’s concert later that week in another Michigan venue. Over the years they have performed a song or two at each other’s concerts.
Bob has cited the song structure of Bruce’s “Jungleland” to helping with the construction of his song “Night Moves”.
There is even a story of them both being in LA to work on albums at the same time, and we’re staying at the same hotel. So they’d have dinner or hang in the bar and discuss the work of the day and encourage each other’s efforts.
    Nice.
    Nice reaction too.

That piano player did not have to hit that many key strokes behind bob's great voice to sound like the perfect wallpaper of beautiful blend. These lyrics are literally part of my best distance running memories. It just seemed to me it was less often the wind was helping me down the sidewalk with a friendly boost.

You can't get any more classic than Bob Segar. Love this one (probably my second favorite of his), but my favorite of his is "NIght Moves" - so much soul, another story-telling one.

Bob Seger has been around a few years prior to Bruce Springsteen . From 2 + 2 to Night Moves this guy was the Detroit Boy that was always Running Against the Wind. Like a Rock he was Shamed by the Moon so Turn the page to find more hits. Just Roll With it and You'll Accomp'ny Me all the way down Main Street; some real Night Moves with Bob.

"The Fire Inside" is one of my faves- so much truth in one song. Ramblin' Gamblin' Man is another great one- just try to sit still during that!
"Like a rock" is another one like this, written from the perspective of an older guy looking back. Also contains 2 smoking hot slide guitar solos! I agree with all the other poster's recommendations, too.
