The next 2D Mario kicking off a “Switch 2 Lite” is such a brilliant shout! Could be a fun parallel if 3D Mario ends up as the launch title for base Switch 2.
Wanted to give my perspective as someone who is reasonably deep into the splatoon fandom! I can affirm that it’s extremely unlikely we get a fourth title in 2025. As you probably know, the theme, story, and visuals of each new game are decided by the winner of the previous game’s final splatfest. In the case of splatoon 3, that final fest was less than a month ago. While I don’t doubt that the dev team for the series has a foundation for the next game (new mechanics, weapons, etc) and an outline for how each potential final fest winner would influence it, I think there is simply too little time between now and the Switch 2’s release for the game to be in a polished state. There’s potential for a spin-off though, in my opinion. Hope this was interesting and/or helpful!
Would be interesting to see what a splatoon spinoff game would look like, they have a lot of potential with the world and characters but i feel the gameplay is pretty integral to the franchise
@@davidtitanium22 I’m not too sure what a spinoff would look like either, to be honest. Something I’ve speculated on for a while that I forgot to mention above is the possibility that the devs give Splatoon 3 a content extension to take advantage of the Switch 2’s backwards compatibility. It might give the game a new lease on life to rebrand it as a soft launch title for the new system given that it slightly underperformed globally. That’s just a wild theory, though.
You know your are right that WarioWare would lend itself to a battle royale game format really well (100 people get a clip of micro games and its a game of attrition to survive them as the micro game set gets faster & faster). At least I assume that is what you mean by "mass participation multiplayer game".
I wish I could get into arms. I tried the trial and I love a lot about it but the gameplay just didn’t click. great character designs and very fun overall feel though
This channel is such a much higher bar than almost all other Ninten'Tubers, it's not even funny! You've grown immensely since I found this channel, but I bet you'll be soaring in increasing success, by the day. Please keep the content the way it is though, if that happens; it is unrivaled!
One game I was really surprised to not even see mentioned was a Mario Maker 3. The original was the 30th anniversary game, so a new one could fill in that same slot for a 40th anniversary game. We have a new style they could add with Mario Wonder, too. I’m not sure if the team that makes Mario Maker is the same one as the 2D Mario team, but it feels like it would at least be worth mentioning. Loved the video, though!
It's a great point but since the 2D Mario team also make Mario Maker and given that both 2D Marios (including the remake) substantially outsold SMM2, regrettably I don't anticipate SMM3 until after a new 2D Mario has released.
Regarding a new mainline Kirby title, while the route you proposed of a bigger title with a 5 year dev cycle could be very possible, I believe a 3 year dev cycle for a sequel in the same vein as Forgotten Land should not be ignored. After all, it was only a bit over 2 years between Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot. And I personally believe that the main reason Forgotten Land took 4 was due to them figuring out how to make mainline Kirby work in 3D. I think there's a solid 50% chance of a cross-gen mainline Kirby following Forgotten Land's template to release within the first year of the switch's successor, and 90% for within the first 2 years.
HAL also loves iterating on the same gameplay style/engine once they find something that works. Not sure how much the jump to a new console would affect things but I’m sure something that plays and looks pretty darn similar to Forgotten Land will be out within the first two years
Just commenting to say, these videos are always of high quality, I watch most of them, it’s just a matter of time before the channel will grow or if lucky, blow up. Keep up the great work.
On the topic of Splatoon I really don´t think the developers would want to be rushed to pump out the next entry again so quickly. Splatoon 1 to 2 turnaround really was an act of absolute desperation to have as many high profile games in 2017 as possible which left very little room for innovation besides Salmon Run. We also should remember that following the Switch reveal trailer in October the community discussed for 3 months if it was a new entry or a port. Nintendo likely does not want that to happen again now that Splatoon has had 2 entries on a system people actually played and truly went mainstream on. The Final Fest theme may also be another indicator. Famously the results of these shape the following game. Knowing their deadline Splatoon 1 just asked who the best idol was which ultimately just decided which Squid Sister would be hypnotized in the story mode. Splatoon 2´s Chaos vs Order on the other hand truly shaped the entire visual identity of the game in the chaotic desert Splatlands where multiple cultures clash and mix. And Splatoon 3´s Past vs Present vs Future is likewise a very broad theme which we can assume to shape the aesthetics of Splatoon 4. And I just cannot see that being polished up with 4K visuals in a mere 2 years after updates stop for 3. But beyond the analytical view, storywise it just does not feel right. Splatoon 3 in its Direct was described as the finale of the splatastic saga, all 3 hubs became available, the motivation of the main story´s villain was to return the world to its past state while Side Order´s wanted to freeze the world in a moment and have the present persist forever and all 7 idols came together for the biggest Splatfest in history. 3 is very explicitly meant to be the end of Splatoon´s first era. It has a very definitive feeling of finality to it compared to 1 and 2. And as such it would be plain weird if they did all of this knowing they´d be forced to come out with yet another iterative sequel not even 2 years later like business as usual. I don´t expect a complete overhaul but something that truly feels new. That and I believe that Nintendo is not as pressured to push Splatoon early as Switch 2 will almost certainly have a new Mario Kart calendar year 1 to push online whereas in 2017 it was hard to say how many core Nintendo fans who would buy Switch early were gonna double dip with MK8DX when statistically they likely had the Wii-U original. Anyway these were just some feelings I felt were good to add and I absolutely love the work you do!
The main issues I have with Splatoon 4 being so soon after Splatoon 3 are two things... 1. Splatoon 3 was very clearly rushed from a conceptual standpoint, even with its multiple delays. Doing so again for Splatoon 4, especially when you have to factor in Team Past's victory in the FinalFest, may not end well. 2. Given the drop-off in overseas sales for Splatoon 2 to 3 (partially due to the usual sequel drop-off, but still), Nintendo may risk overseas franchise fatigue if they release another Splatoon game so soon after wrapping up the third. And as you alluded to, a quick turnaround could lead to an iterative sequel that's pretty barebones off the bat, which wouldn't help how Splatoon is viewed overseas. To be frank, I still think they should've supported New Horizons for longer & save Splatoon 3 for the Switch 2. But as things stand now, I do see Animal Crossing as being a major system-seller post-ACNH & could bring in a large community from the start. Maybe not Day 1, but definitely later within the first year of the system's life. And yeah, I do think that it'd be best for Splatoon to become a once-per-system franchise with a longer support tail. On the Smash front, it's honestly more likely for Sakurai to build something new than to further built atop Smash Ultimate. He even explicitly on his RUclips channel that he wants each Smash game he works on to be distinct, so I don't see a Sakurai-led Switch 2 Smash entry to just be an enhanced version of Ultimate. Especially since you'd have to renegotiate with every third-party company to get those characters back anyway, so you can't roll over the same arrangements for a port since it'd be legally seen as a new game. Likewise, only some models were remade. Whereas most of the animations can be traced as far back as Brawl or even Melee in some cases.. Smash Ultimate still used Smash Wii U as a base more than past games used the games before them as a base. Smash as a series hasn't fully started from scratch since 64 -> Melee.
Splatoon 3 was genuinely my favorite of the trilogy, but even still, it's impossible to ignore how unrealistic it was for Nintendo to try and put out not just a third game but also Side Order in such a short amount of time. It needs more time in the oven to reach its maximum potential. I'm not too worried about Splatoon 3's sales being worse than those of 2 since Splatoon 2's Final Fest took place in the same year that COVID-19 started and therefore had a bit of a boost, but the comparisons between Splatoon and COD are real and should be avoided. The obvious answer to me seems to be Splatoon spinoffs made by a smaller team. Give the main devs time to make something truly great, without making Splatoon fans starve for 5-6 years every console release.
@@birdflox1337 The COD comparison was always stupid and started by people that never played Splatoon. - Not a yearly released series (2015, 2017, 2022); a release 2026 or 2027 is still realistic - Realistic vs. Cartoon design - Bullets vs. Ink; which can be difficult as first, especially as you start with a short range weapon first - "Classic" movement vs. swimming Should they still give more developing time and have a longer support? Yes, but what is easer to get new player into Splatoon? A old game or a fresh new shiny game? As a reminder Splatoon is mainly a multiplayer team shooter and multiplayer games live or die by the player base and that is always shrinking. How fast depends on the game itself, developer support and the community. Many multiplayer games are also very competitive, which mean you must become better to continue "enjoying" the game, what not many like and drop off. The feature to lower your rank is a good way to hold a more "casual rank", but still Splatoon is not the only game and players move on to the next (maybe new) game. With a new Splatoon game you can get much easer old player back and a new generation of players into the series, instead of some new weapons or a new map of a old (maybe long dropped) game.
It’s wild to think about the position HAL Labs is in. With Kirby being HUGE in marketing, and Forgotten Land surpassing all expectations, showing potential as an evergreen title if released earlier, what will they do next? I would say if the next mainline title is 3D, it will prob be out in early 2026 rather than 2025, as I feel they don’t have enough time to make a new game. And as you said, FL has taken a good amount of time. We aren’t really used to going so long without a Kirby game. As we should Atleast expect a spin off eventually. And whenever Kirby is gone for a full year. That typically means the next will have a title, big or small. However, something Kirby has done for years is release titles near the VERY end of a consoles lifecycle. They are usually like the VERY last ones put on the system. Will HAL wait for the next system? Release a small title for the switches swan song? Or just make a new game on the current hardware with a larger install base? There’s enough there to talk about in another video, as HAL makes games relatively quick. Interesting points on them in this vid
So mad we didn't get more Odyssey stuff. Very sad. That game is just so fun to move around in. I'd be floored if the next 3D Mario's movement is that good
Ooo new video! Also small thing I wanted to drop is Smash ultimate does actually use Smash Wii U as a frame work! I believe Sakuri stated that they were able to have a relatively quick turn around time for ultimate because they used a lot of the frame work of smash 4
Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, F-Zero...all series that need to come back! I'd love to see them in the early years of the Switch 2. The big ape needs a new game! 🦍
I expect (and hope) that the next mainline Splatoon game will not release until at least 2027. The developers have stated they view Splatoon 3 as the "end of a triolgy", and their art books always make it clear that they have some very ambitious ideas, so they'll likely want to do something really different for the next story mode. That being said, I'm suspecting our first Splatoon spinoff could be around the corner now. Splatoon has already proven that its world and aesthetic is highly captivating, however I have met a ton of people who have never interacted with the franchise because the competitive nature of the games scares them off (and the story modes are usually not marketed as standing on their own too well). Nintendo could establish a smaller team, or even a third party studio, to create spinoffs that can be put out quickly in-between mainline releases while the main team takes their sweet time. Like how the Zelda franchise likes to put out cheaper 2D games or remakes while working on the big hitters.
39:15 My understanding was that every Smash game prior to Ultimate was made essentially from scratch, while Ultimate was the first Smash game that was put together starting from the previous title, Smash 4. While I believe this is something Sakurai stated himself in a Smash presentation around the game's release or before, I cannot recall the exact one off the top of my head.I recall when Ultimate released there was controversy/a running joke in the Smash community around people referring to Smash Ultimate as a "port." I can think of two interactions in previous patches of the game that were leftovers of Smash 4 being used a base, before eventually being patched out: when Bowser Jr. air dodged after ejecting from his clown car in his Up Special, he was able to air dodge multiple times in the air like in Smash 4, despite the air dodge mechanics being reworked for everyone else to only allow air dodging a single time before refreshing it on the ground/the ledge; and Daisy's Down Special properties (where she plucks a turnip or other item and throws them) matched Peach's Down Special in Smash 4, before being patched to be identical to Ultimate Peach.
I'm not sure if it would be an independent 4K release, rather I think one of the features of Switch2 could be to upscale and performance boost older games via patch (potentially even charge a fee for said patch)
Wow this is a long video! I’ll definitely watch this when I get home, but to give my perspective, I’d say launch year games will be 1st Party: 3D Mario Prime 4 Legends ZA New Mario Kart Botw 4K remaster Xenoblade X definitive Edition 3rd Party: Persona 3 Reload Metaphor Refantazio Elden Ring Monster Hunter Wilds Red Dead Redemption 2 Assassin’s Creed Shadows
I really hope the next Animal Crossing doesn't repeat the stupid one island per console limitation. In a game with few flaws, that's one of the biggest complaints (that and poor multiplayer).
Amazingly thorough video. One factor that I may suggest into the conversation though: it came across to me that these odds are made under the thought that the hardware will be highly similar in form to the current switch (which is fair since that's what rumours and patterns suggest), but I would be surprised if Nintendo didn't have a few tricks and features that could influence the development of different IP (since they are gameplay first rather than 'time for a new X game'). If there are some new features they want to showcase, this could really shake up which IP these studios task themselves with.
My pie in the sky hope is that the 30th anniversary Pokemon game would be a Stadium-style battle simulator with all the Pokemon in one game for the first time since Gen 7. Theoretically it’s the sort of project that could be given to a third party studio like Bamco since most of the work would just be in modeling and animations, but I don’t know if they would trust an anniversary game using main series mechanics to an outside dev.
On the Zelda front, BotW and TotK refresh would be a huge mistake (so dumb). They should look to refreshing some of the hand helds, or bringing WW and TP HD to Switch 2.
Iirc in a note to shareholder they said they're working on completely new IPs, which team do you think is most likely to be developing it? Though "new ip" is perhaps a bit too vague to make any prediction on, for all we know it could either be another small casual game or trying to start an entire franchise
EPD 4 almost certainly. Platinum, Monolithsoft and EPD 9 possibly. Arika, NintendoCube or Intelligent Systems conceivably. EPD 8/5/3/10/Retro/NLG less likely but far from impossible especially if it's a smaller side game.
On the Pokemon side, I'm thinking Z-A for 2025, and an XY full remake (like FF7) for 25 or 26, there are a lot of factors with Z-A probably having been delayed with the Switch 2, BDSP having a truly disastrous sales dropoff (literally 99% from its first semester to its second), and them likely switching to a 4 year dev cycle to avoid cannibalization (with Legends games now in the rotation). Also I don't see them doing Black and White yet, seeing as how the Scarlet and Violet DLC was so gen 5 focused.
The Wii U launch games: New Super Mario Bros. U Nintendo Land Assassin's Creed III Arkham City Mass Effect 3 Ninja Gaiden 3 Zombi U Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Madden NFL 13 Black Ops II Darksiders II Epic Mickey 2 NBA 2K13 Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed
Switch launch games: Just Dance 2017 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Skylanders: Imaginators Super Bomberman R I Am Setsuna Snipperclips Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment Fast RMX
What i'm hoping for: Mario Kart 9 as a launch title, a new Xenoblade sometime in autumn/fall, a new Yoshi and/or Super Mario Maker 3 a Super Mario Odyssey 2 (or a new 3D Mario) for the Switch 2's first holiday season, more inclined to believe that Mario Maker 3 will be a second year title otherwise it feels a bit crowded with Mario Kart, Maker AND a 3D Mario
I think this video presents a real conundrum that Nintendo is undoubtedly wrestling with. Releasing games on the Switch and Switch 2 simultaneously does make some sense, but it’s something that can’t go on for long. Sony and Microsoft both flubbed this time around, and Nintendo must’ve taken notice. The PS5 JUST got its third exclusive, and we are 4 years in. How long does Switch 2 live? And how does backwards compatibility factor in?
This will be out of left field, and perhaps something of a pipe dream or heavy wish, but i think, within the next three years, we could see some revisiting of some more obscure titles like Eternal Darkness qnd Geist, be they are remakes or remasters. And even going back to Koei Tecmo, it wouldnt be so far fetched to see another entry in the Fatal Frame series.
When it comes to 2D Mario early on in the Switch 2's lifecycle I'm surprised you didn't mention a possible Mario Maker 3. Seems like a strong possibility, especially as a 40th anniversary title.
Splatoon has that thing where they build on the results of the big "final" splatfest for the next game and this was just in september. So 2025 Splatoon4 is quite unlikely, and even 2026 a stretch. I also feel like Switch releases will still be around for a while and I'm expecting "smaller games" that don't really need more computational power to be primarily Switch releases for a few years onward, making the Switch essentially a Switch2 lite.
It would be cool if they could team up with Creatures Inc. to make the "Pet Simulator" title so that Game Freak can focus on making great RPGs and leaving Pokémon Amie (and camping in the newer titles) to another studio, making two much better games as a result. They could connect this Pet game to Pokémon Home too, to give the subscription a bit more meaning, and so that the little creatures you are taking care of are the ones that have traveled alongside you in your adventures.
I'm also of the school of thought that the competitive scene should be handled outside of the games through a separate game of its own, connected to Pokémon Home but with the ability to rent some teams too, and making it so that defeating a team allows you to choose and use one of their Pokémon as a rental for your own teams, encouraging more battling and reducing tedium from grinding and not locking you down to using a whole team like the current rental system.
The main thing I'm really curious to see with the next Nintendo generation is how they approach cross-gen, something this video didn't focus on a ton. Nintendo experimented with it in the early Switch days - Fire Emblem Warriors had a New 3DS version, while Sushi Striker and Captain Toad released on both 3DS and Switch - but I think the most likely approach is that they'll reserve cross-gen status for smaller games and rereleases while keeping every major new release locked to the successor. Otherwise, I have...a lot of thoughts on the contents of this video (enough that I have to break it up into multiple comments): - I do think it'll be a while before we see another EPD 3 game, or even a new mainline release. However, Tantalus appears to be a team Nintendo leans on for remasters. I think it's highly unlikely they'd be trusted with a full remake of one of the single most important games ever released. A conversion of Ocarina of Time 3D would suit them, though. I think there are a few other possibilities, though: - As you said, a new Hyrule Warriors game - possibly a 40th anniversary release - would be a suitable call. I think Nintendo might be more interested in having another IP get the Warriors treatment, though - Pokemon, Xenoblade, and even Mario and Kirby could fit. - Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD have been so highly demanded that Nintendo might have decided to just reserve them as a cross-gen release, given it's possible Zelda wouldn't get its typical yearly release or a year-one Switch 2 game otherwise. - Eighting's gotten quite close with Nintendo lately, and they're known for their work on 2D fighting games, which Zelda would be an excellent fit for. I could see them tackling a 2D Zelda fighting game. - I think PlatinumGames would have the chops and the trust to tackle something like an Ocarina of Time remake or Zelda project. I don't know how many Okami alumni are there, or anything like that, but if nothing else, there was a guy commenting on the Wonderful 101 trademark being acquired by Platinum in r/GamingLeaksandRumors saying he'd heard from an industry friend that Nintendo had entrusted Platinum with an "action focused" Zelda project targeting 2026 and that Nintendo was investing a lot in them to have an Osaka presence. One of those things I want to keep in the back of my mind on the offchance it actually pans out, haha. - EPD 4 really is the wildcard here. There's a ton they could do - Nintendogs, Nintendo Land (if dock streaming is a real feature, which it might not be because the people talking about it initially were heavily extrapolating), Tomodachi Life, Switch Sports (I personally really like the idea of something like Nintendo Switch Sports: Wintry Mix as sort of the reverse of Wii Sports Resort), a new exergame, a new IP with a new concept...I think they'll likely have 2 games out year one, but it's really hard to pin down any one candidate. - I think Nintendo's going to sit on Splatoon for a bit, as 3 seemingly had a troubled development based on all the cut content and the apparent swap with Xenoblade 3 in the release schedule. They only just held the Grand Festival, which will presumably translate into Splatoon 4 having a past theme. I think they'll want to give 4 more time in the oven. In the meantime, a Splatoon spinoff of some sort could happen. I think Nintendo could very well be aiming to release a new Animal Crossing in the first year, though. If nothing else, I imagine we'll see it by the end of 2026. New Horizons made the series into a true killer app. - I think it's possible Iron Galaxy could take the lead on Metroid Prime 2 and 3 remasters, with less input from Retro, but it's also entirely possible they're handed off to the NERD team that did Pikmin 1+2 or something like that. - There is one old rumor about Next Level working on an F-Zero GX remaster - I can see it, but I also kinda doubt it. Luigi's Mansion 4 being a year 2 game sounds about right, especially if 3D Mario and Mario Kart are out year 1. - I'd predict that, given the overlap between the current Paper Mario and WarioWare teams and the lack of many Origami King developers on the TTYD remake, Intelligent Systems likely has a new Rhythm Heaven on the way. They've continued showering it with love in WarioWare despite not working on the series before, and it'd be a great fit for a cross-gen release - you can drum up more interest in the series across the board while throwing Switch owners a bone in the form of a new game. - I think EPD 8 is almost guaranteed to have two year one games. 3D Mario is essentially a given, of course, but all the talk about them taking the reins on Donkey Kong aligns with them hiring for a 2D game a few years ago, and it doesn't at all seem unreasonable that Nintendo would want a 2D platformer on Switch 2 year one. Returns HD releasing in January isn't necessarily an issue, either - not only have we seen a similar situation play out in the Switch era (NSMBU Deluxe launched in January, and several months later we got Mario Maker 2 with its own singleplayer campaign), but Returns 3D and Tropical Freeze were originally both slated for 2013 before the latter was delayed. I think there's a fair chance that a similar situation could play out, especially if the new DK is a Switch 2 exclusive. - Conversely, given the resources EPD 9 dedicated to both Mario Kart Tour and the Booster Course Pass for much of the Switch era, I think there's a good chance they only have Mario Kart out year one. At the very least, I can't see them having ARMS 2 ready as well - maybe Nintendogs, though, if EPD 4 isn't working on that? (We do know a built-in microphone is back for the Switch successor, so Nintendogs is likely a matter of when, not if. Maybe not launch year after Nintendogs + Cats didn't fare great as a 3DS launch title, though.) - EPD 10's first Switch 2 game is almost certainly going to be Super Mario Maker 3. I think we might have to wait until 2027 for their next game, though. Maybe 2026 if we're lucky. - I think there's a high likelihood Monolith's seemingly long-gestating new IP is going to be a late 2025 release akin to Xenoblade 2 in 2017. I think Nintendo now sees the earlier stages of a console's life as the best time to release new IPs and the later stages as the best time to revisit dormant ones, given that we haven't had anything truly new since...Game Builder Garage in 2021. Princess Peach Showtime and Nintendo World Championships kinda count...but not really, with one being a new type of spinoff and the other having preexisting branding.
- Studio 2 at Bandai Namco - the Smash team - appears to have been the team job listings for a 3D action game Nintendo remaster were up for a few years back. I really do think this will be for Kid Icarus Uprising, and that it'll be crossgen - possibly even the first time Nintendo attempts crossplatform multiplayer in the process. Smash is likely not happening until much later, as you said. - I think WayForward will continue to work with Nintendo, but I don't think their next project will be Advance Wars-related. A cross-gen new Wario Land would be my *guess*. - HAL's in an interesting spot right now. Given their usual release schedule, they've been very quiet lately. I don't think they'll aim to have a new 3D Kirby out the same year as a 3D Mario, so 2026 seems likely for the next mainline game. But a cross-gen Kirby spinoff for 2025 would be appropriate. Gonna go out on a limb and say they might revisit Kirby's Dream Course. I do think there is a possibility as well that they might remake one of the Mother/EarthBound games. I find it bizarre that people keep calling for Grezzo to handle it in the Link's Awakening artstyle when we have a developer candidate that not only worked on the second and third games, but could absolutely adapt the clay look of the renders/art for the aforementioned games if Kirby and the Rainbow Curse is any indication. No reason to change the artstyle. - Astral Chain 2 is a given, honestly. It's by far the most successful collaboration between Nintendo and Platinum when excluding combined Wii U and Switch sales of Bayonetta 2. Nintendo took the unprecedented step of fully acquiring the IP after Platinum originally co-owned it. Platinum has expressed a desire to make Astral Chain into a trilogy. And it'd be the perfect early release for the system - it could elevate the IP and get more eyes on it (akin to Splatoon with the first year of the Switch), be the first exclusive to cater fully to the hardcore audience, and serve as a showcase for the power of the new hardware - something I think the new 3D Mario will likely do to an extent, but it's more likely to focus on showing off new features of the hardware. I expect to see this a month or two after the new console launches. - Arc System Works likely won't follow up Another Code Recollection directly. My prediction is that they'll be tackling the Hotel Dusk duology next, and from there they can finally realize the original vision of having a crossover game between the two series. - NST was a bit of a blindspot in this video. Granted, they're still supporting F-Zero 99 and may be codeveloping the new 3D Mario alongside EPD 8 and 1-UP Studio, but if nothing else, I think they'll be poised to have a new game out by 2027 at the latest, with 2026 being on the table as well. And because they handled the new content in the Captain Toad ports, which Nintendo supported the Switch port of quite extensively...I think they'll be making Captain Toad 2 next. - Complete shot in the dark, but I can maybe see Shiver Entertainment's first project under Nintendo being a port of Fantasy Life i to the Switch successor so it can be a cross-gen release. With Level-5's apparent development struggles, it might be difficult for them to handle that themselves, and with Nintendo apparently having enough of a stake in the game to be the ones to announce its delay even without having one of their own teams working on it, unlike the original with Brownie Brown...it's not unfeasible. - Ubisoft has already signaled they want to put a version of Sparks of Hope out on the Switch successor. Hard to say if they'd do anything new given the exodus of key staff, but if nothing else...let Rayman and Mario actually interact somehow lol - I doubt Arika will have much going on. They're a small company, and between only just releasing Endless Ocean, making a new Tetris The Grand Master, supporting Tekken 8, and their new deal with SNK...they're too busy to probably do anything more than a minor retooling of Super Mario Bros. 35 into Super Mario Bros. 40. - It was reported earlier this year that Nintendo was in talks with three developers they haven't worked with before, and they've been aggressively courting other developers as of late. Velan Studios (who I wouldn't write off as being a one-time partner yet - I think they could be tapped as a successor to Monster Games, or given something like DK given their Vicarious Visions roots - maybe even something as out there as Wario World 2), MAGES, Iron Galaxy, ArtePiazza, Arc System Works, Forever Entertainment, WayForward...I think it's entirely possible that we see Nintendo work with a new team for the first time in year one without it being one of the aforementioned three developers, even if it's just for a new Snipperclips-tier project. - Star Fox appears to be on the table, as Switch Sports of all games had some datamined strings tied to it. Could be akin to how Kirby Fighters 2 files leaked Forgotten Land being a 3D game. The fact that the Nintendo Museum character wall has a larger square dedicated to Fox, a treatment reserved for active series with the exception of Donkey Kong, also adds a bit of fuel to the fire. Come to think of it - which EPD team worked on Star Fox Zero and Guard? Do we know? Phew! I think that's everything I wanted to say. Probably should've reined things in a bit, but I've been thinking about the early life of the next console a lot and wanted to get my thoughts out there.
Oh - one last thing: I think there might be a chance that Nintendo partners up with TT Fusion again for a Lego Mario game (or maybe Lego Zelda or Lego Animal Crossing now that both series have also had LEGO sets). It's been years since Lego City Undercover, but they did have in-house producers involved with that game instead of just publishing it and the 3DS prequel as exclusives. I imagine it's something they've probably at least thought about now that they're working directly with The Lego Group.
Hmmm, I think you're misinterpreting hardcore fan. Sports games, family minigames, etc. is what makes a casual fan in my book and it was the large majority of the wii fanbase (hence why it was a successful but overall unhealthy console). I don't think animal crossing falls into this category. Yes it falls into the genre of casual game because it's not focused on action or adventure, but that doesn't mean it's not made for hardcore nintendo fans in the same way that Zelda, Mario, Smash Bros, Pikmin, etc. are. In fact, I'd even argue that Pokemon is just as if not more detached from hardcore nintendo fans than animal crossing is. Idk, from my perspective it's not solid reasoning for why you wouldn't make it an opening title for the console. I still agree overall though since I believe that animal crossing thrives on a large community of players to interact with, so it's useful to already have a solid installbase for the console before releasing it.
On the content of the video I don’t think we get a Mariokart at the beginning. I have a gut feeling that they will push a more risky racing title, maybe FZero, maybe Diddy Kong (but not really lol) maybe something else! I think we get a remaster of The more recent Hyrule Warriors than getting a new one. It didn’t flop, but was notably poor in its performance and this would showcase the new console!!
It´s funny you brought up Sonic Origins in relation to a Super Mario anniversary title because I myself have thought about that game´s expansion in Sonic Origins Plus. My personal prediction is that we will get Super Mario 3D All-Stars+ announced in a Super Mario 40th Direct with the long awaited Galaxy 2 HD as a Switch 2 exclusive funnily enough. And Nintendo has multiple ways to not make this their most uncharacteristically generous deal since Metroid Prime Trilogy. They could make it a limited release once again evn if they seem to have moved away from that, instead of 70$ they could say it is 80$ as a special package for the fans with 20$ per game or they could make it a digital exclusive as to not divert store attention from the new 3D Mario as they did with Pikmin 1+2 which had their retail release 2 months after Pikmin 4 despite Prime Remastered and now Emio proving Nintendo can prepare incredibly quick retail releases.
Unlikely but I don't want Sakurai to go back to Smash. Ultimate feels like a good place for him to end on and I'd be interested in him going back go unique projects like Kid Icarus or Kirby Air Ride.
I AGREE personally id love for a more nintendo involved dev to take over smash. sakurai can make such amazing stuff like uprising, i think its a shame hes so often stuck to one series (since he hasnt worked on kirby since air ride)
Eh, honestly I think the Ubisoft-related forecasts are too high. I have 2 main reasons why. First, it seems like Mario+Rabbids is one of those "pitch us"-like titles, like the new Famicom Detective Club, meaning that in order for a new original one to come out, there needs to be someone interested enough in continuing it to offer a new game in order for it to be made, unlike the regular cadence of the standard franchises. And since the main "idea man" of the franchise is gone from Ubisoft, that doesn't bode well. My second reason why is because Ubisoft itself is facing some struggles overall, so if they consider Sparks of Hope as disappointing, it would be hard for me to see the big suits to decide to go out of their way to offer to make another game in a "declining" franchise.
Very good points. I guess my logic was that because Ubisoft is struggling, they know that Nintendo games can/do sell, the partnership is long established and the development costs are lower on less powerful hardware. But I agree, it's a murky one.
Thanks for the forecast! Just a quick off-topic question: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (behave today finger ski upon boy assault summer exhaust beauty stereo over). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
This might be, at least for a long time, the last generational leap for Nintendo where the graphics are noticeably a lot better. Diminishing returns and all. So surely it's Pilotwings' time to shine once again as a dazzling tech demo launch title? I think it'd be a real shame to miss that opportunity.
There’s so many incredible looking games built for PS4 and Xbox One, and with the Switch 2 being around PS4 Pro level (I’d say a bit higher), then we’re beyond good.
Personally, I don't like a lot of Nintendo titles nowadays and I really only care about a few. If this forecast proved correct, I wouldn't be interested in the next console until Animal Crossing or a potential Tomodachi X game would drop, as well as a main entry Zelda game. Pikmin is also a franchise I'm interested in, as well as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon by Spiked Chunsoft which you did not mention in this video. I would be delighted if SC made an entirely new PMD game, but I am not holding my breath for a new one or even a remake any time soon. A remake seems likely as Explorers of Sky was really popular and still has a strong fanbase to this day. However, many seem to agree that EoS doesn't need a remake, and fans are already making one in Unity so that SC doesn't need to. This is all to say that it will be very unlikely I will buy the next console day one but may do so in the second year after launch. If not second, then the third or fourth.
I definitely think Monolithsoft will not be featured on the new system for a while. It hasn't been too long since Xenoblade 3's expansion pass ended, and a new interview showed us that they are focusing on making an entirely new game engine right now. I would hope that they have a second team working on a rerelease, but given how they've previously been hesitant towards doing anything with Xenoblade X, I would think its more likely that their spare devs are helping make next-gen titles with other Nintendo teams instead as they often have before. A new Monolithsoft project in my opinion won't be a thing for another 4 years, but I would love to see otherwise.
My dream (and somewhat realistic) launch year is: Animal crossing Mario kart Xenoblade x remastered New fire emblem Metaphor Re:fantazio (typical atlus deluxe rerelease with additional content) Arms 2 Pokémon Z-A A new IP that takes full advantage of the rumored graphical capabilities
Question: with so much more Metroid coming out, and since 2 was already remade by MS, do you think there’s a chance that they have the mainline games remade in the same style as Dread? Maybe 2 packs; Zero Mission and Returns and then Super and Fusion (I actually believe that they could take place on Samus’ escape from ZDR and you replay her going over these missions and then wrap it up with going into 6)
I feel like at this point both they and MS would rather work on original titles. A Samus Returns port is the lowest-hanging fruit of all and even that feels like it could be a long way off if they prioritise MP4 and Metroid 6.
@@nintendoforecast I see that, but if they want to grow the franchise Metroid has never been hotter, I feel that this would be a good move for the franchise. But you're probably right. I just feel they could be missing out. Something I'm curious about, are people more likely to pick up games if they're packaged with another one, makes people feel like they're getting a deal
It's a very good point. I just wonder how much Metroid they think they can realistically put out on one system while still maintaining sales. I guess if MP4 does very well indeed (over 5 million, let alone over 10) the odds go up. The double-pack angle is interesting although the only examples I can think of in recent years are 3D All-Stars and Pikmin 1+2 which were considerably lower effort than a full graphical remake.
i mean ok there have been many many "Prediction" videos, but when i say "Forecast" i'm referring to the whole percentage thing. THAT seems very difficult to quantify
At some point but realistically any individual character is likely to be very low indeed so it would probably be a case of a series of broad forecasts and then "if we assume this, then..." forecasts within like Russian dolls. e.g. if the chance of more first party characters is 90%, and a Mario universe character is 50% and within that the odds of it being a main series character rather than one from spin-offs is 50% then... etc. etc. I will get to it one day but it's a bit of a nightmare since, as a forecast, I'm not sure it would be all that satisfying to watch lots of extreme long-shots. Also, while I like Smash, I'm not as plugged into it as other franchises.
Criteria to guess new Smash roster: A)Did the character play a significant role in Nintendo's history? E.g. Ryu/Ken in SF for SNES, MegaMan and DK B)Will the inclusion of a character benefit Nintendo and franchise owner? E.g. Sepiroth and Cloud, to give Squeenix some mileage to produce games for Nintendo C)Is the character important to Masahiro Sakurai growing up? E.g. Adult Pokemon Trainer with Buster Wolf D)No Doom Guy or Waluigi
i really hope we can learn what fire emblem's "iron18" is! ive always found it so odd they rushed out engages dlc so fast, its really seemed like another fe game has been planned for awhile
Interesting question. I'm not as across third party studios (I play 95% first party) so it's unlikely to be something I can meaningfully answer myself but I'd be fascinated to see people's opinions.
Babe wake up, a one-hour Nintendo Forecast just dropped

The next 2D Mario kicking off a “Switch 2 Lite” is such a brilliant shout! Could be a fun parallel if 3D Mario ends up as the launch title for base Switch 2.

I'm really surprised that you do not have a lot more followers at this point already. Unparalleled work. A+

Very interesting and helpful - thank you!
Also, they wouldn't do Splatfest reruns if they had a game next year
You know your are right that WarioWare would lend itself to a battle royale game format really well (100 people get a clip of micro games and its a game of attrition to survive them as the micro game set gets faster & faster). At least I assume that is what you mean by "mass participation multiplayer game".
This sounds fun as hell, would be a great call for the next “99” title

Ganon's Fury! That struck me as funnier than it probably should have 😂
24:04 Actually, the 2nd Mario film is scheduled for April 3, 2026.
Man, I just want Tomodachi Life 2...
I think there's a solid 50% chance of a cross-gen mainline Kirby following Forgotten Land's template to release within the first year of the switch's successor, and 90% for within the first 2 years.
i completely agree! HAL works quite fast when theyre building on the same engine! i really honestly think a new 3d kirby could be a 2025 game
HAL also loves iterating on the same gameplay style/engine once they find something that works. Not sure how much the jump to a new console would affect things but I’m sure something that plays and looks pretty darn similar to Forgotten Land will be out within the first two years
This hour passed so Quick!!
Really great video
Just commenting to say, these videos are always of high quality, I watch most of them, it’s just a matter of time before the channel will grow or if lucky, blow up. Keep up the great work.
What will most likely be there: 3d Mario, another Zelda spin-off, and a tech demo game.
My hopuim of what will be there: Star Fox.
i wonder if legends za might be a breath of the wild type scenario being on switch and switch 2 due to how it is at the tailend of the switch’s life
Small correction, the new Mario movie comes out in 2026, not 2025.
Thanks. That was me misspeaking.
Saw the video length and immediately got some snacks.
Excellent post. A lot worth considering.
@@birdflox1337 Either that or partially outsource Splatoon in a similar manner as Pikmin 4.
@@birdflox1337 The COD comparison was always stupid and started by people that never played Splatoon.
- Not a yearly released series (2015, 2017, 2022); a release 2026 or 2027 is still realistic
- Realistic vs. Cartoon design
- Bullets vs. Ink; which can be difficult as first, especially as you start with a short range weapon first
- "Classic" movement vs. swimming
Should they still give more developing time and have a longer support?
You have an amazing work ethic!
As strange as it may sound I would love another Ring Fit and a Arms game for the new switch
amazing channel. Good job on all your videos!
I've never seen such an in depth and analytical look at the future of Nintendo... you do your homework!!
Seriously this is one of the best channels on RUclips
I'm not sure if it would be an independent 4K release, rather I think one of the features of Switch2 could be to upscale and performance boost older games via patch (potentially even charge a fee for said patch)
I need Bandai Namco Kid Icarus or Mario Baseball. Either or would be HUGE

I really hope the next Animal Crossing doesn't repeat the stupid one island per console limitation. In a game with few flaws, that's one of the biggest complaints (that and poor multiplayer).
I see no one mentioning pokemon for the switch 2. But it’s inevitable that the next game after Legends Z-A will be remakes of black and white
Hungover after a 40th works night out this is exactly what I needed 😁
Amazingly thorough video.
One factor that I may suggest into the conversation though: it came across to me that these odds are made under the thought that the hardware will be highly similar in form to the current switch (which is fair since that's what rumours and patterns suggest), but I would be surprised if Nintendo didn't have a few tricks and features that could influence the development of different IP (since they are gameplay first rather than 'time for a new X game'). If there are some new features they want to showcase, this could really shake up which IP these studios task themselves with.
Would love a sequel to ARMS
me too! :D
For the 40th anniversary of Zelda, I think it would be cool to see a remake of the OG Zelda in 3D fashion.
Also I don't see them doing Black and White yet, seeing as how the Scarlet and Violet DLC was so gen 5 focused.
why does game freak/nintendo hate gen 5 so much :(
We need that HAL Laboratory deep dive!

1hr? this is crazy
Banjo Threeie at launch, calling it now
This is the video I’ve been waiting for 🙏
One project I'd like Namco Bandai to focus is a Fire Emblem-themed Soul Calibur.
It's possible and I'd love to see it but both Switch SMB titles massively outsold SMM2 so given it's the same team, I'd expect SMB to take priority.

Ah yes the Nintendo Forecast hour special.
Ganon's Fury exists already in Hyrule Warriors!
Otherwise, I have...a lot of thoughts on the contents of this video (enough that I have to break it up into multiple comments):
- I do think it'll be a while before we see another EPD 3 game, or even a new mainline release. However, Tantalus appears to be a team Nintendo leans on for remasters. I think it's highly unlikely they'd be trusted with a full remake of one of the single most important games ever released. A conversion of Ocarina of Time 3D would suit them, though. I think there are a few other possibilities, though:
- As you said, a new Hyrule Warriors game - possibly a 40th anniversary release - would be a suitable call.
Maybe not launch year after Nintendogs + Cats didn't fare great as a 3DS launch title, though.)
- EPD 10's first Switch 2 game is almost certainly going to be Super Mario Maker 3.
Hard to say if they'd do anything new given the exodus of key staff, but if nothing else...let Rayman and Mario actually interact somehow lol
- I doubt Arika will have much going on.
Excellent post with some thought-provoking observations.
@@nintendoforecast Thank you!
@@PikaPhantomVG i think that studio gobo could make a lego game with a Nintendo ip too, like they're doing right now with lego Horizon adventures.
Mario 3 with an art style similar to Cuphead would rock
I just hope Fire Emblem is somewhere soon. That's the franchise I wait for
New Star Fox game🙏🏻
I sincerely hope they don’t add more stuff to TOTK. I’ve spent over 200 hours in this game and my quest list is as long as the Amazon river 😁
Fingers crossed for a new nintendoland with online play
A new 3D Mario/Odyssey sequel is definitely coming within the first year like Odyssey did.
Nice. 1 hour switch 2 video.
On the content of the video
I don’t think we get a Mariokart at the beginning.
They could make it a limited release once again evn if they seem to have moved away from that, instead of 70$ they could say it is 80$ as a special package for the fans with 20$ per game or they could make it a digital exclusive as to not divert store attention from the new 3D Mario as they did with Pikmin 1+2 which had their retail release 2 months after Pikmin 4 despite Prime Remastered and now Emio proving Nintendo can prepare incredibly quick retail releases.
bro just made a movie
Unlikely but I don't want Sakurai to go back to Smash. Ultimate feels like a good place for him to end on and I'd be interested in him going back go unique projects like Kid Icarus or Kirby Air Ride.
I AGREE
personally id love for a more nintendo involved dev to take over smash. sakurai can make such amazing stuff like uprising, i think its a shame hes so often stuck to one series (since he hasnt worked on kirby since air ride)
For third party I bet Persona 3 Reload will be released year 1
Eh, honestly I think the Ubisoft-related forecasts are too high.
What happened to shin'en multimedia? Makers of fast racing neo/rmx?
Good team but not first party developers.
Just the video I needed for my drive home! (Don’t worry, I was just listening to the audio, not watching!)
Thanks for the forecast! Just a quick off-topic question: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (behave today finger ski upon boy assault summer exhaust beauty stereo over). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
nf, what chance do you give for animal crossing or splatoon rpg spinoffs?
Ever? Medium-high. Near-term? Very low.
Something new how about a souls like Zelda game
Fire emblem...like Three Houses....Food....Water........
PLEASE....
bro i have work to do. this is unfair
My dream (and somewhat realistic) launch year is:
Animal crossing
Mario kart
Xenoblade x remastered
New fire emblem
Metaphor Re:fantazio (typical atlus deluxe rerelease with additional content)
Arms 2
Pokémon Z-A
A new IP that takes full advantage of the rumored graphical capabilities
The double-pack angle is interesting although the only examples I can think of in recent years are 3D All-Stars and Pikmin 1+2 which were considerably lower effort than a full graphical remake.
how long does it take to edit these videos?
Depends on the length and complexity of the video. Rare to go over 3 hours.
@@nintendoforecast Interesting, I appreciate the content
if there is another Smash soon, is it even possible to "Forecast" new characters? i don't think anyone could have predicted Piranha Plant
i mean ok there have been many many "Prediction" videos, but when i say "Forecast" i'm referring to the whole percentage thing.
Criteria to guess new Smash roster:
A)Did the character play a significant role in Nintendo's history? E.g. Ryu/Ken in SF for SNES, MegaMan and DK
B)Will the inclusion of a character benefit Nintendo and franchise owner? E.g. Sepiroth and Cloud, to give Squeenix some mileage to produce games for Nintendo
C)Is the character important to Masahiro Sakurai growing up? E.g. Adult Pokemon Trainer with Buster Wolf
D)No Doom Guy or Waluigi
