Of all games for the next generation, I’m most interested in seeing a new Donkey Kong game! Tropical Freeze was released a decade ago and it’s still amazing, but it would be nice to have a new experience.
I wonder if there was any substance to the rumours of EPD Tokyo developing a Donkey Kong game a couple years ago. Because they haven't released a full game since Odyssey. Since I saw Bowser's Fury as being an attempt to marry both styles and please fans who like tight platforming levels and open playgrounds respectively.
I think it’s worth bringing up that in all of the Nintendo codename leaks from some months ago (including confirmed ones for Jamboree and Echoes of Wisdom before they were even announced) there were reports of an early shelved “SilverStar” game some time after 2017 - and Odyssey’s codename is “RedStar”, so there’s good chance that at some point they were working on a sequel game ala Galaxy 2. We can presume this isn’t in the works anymore since it predates Bowser’s Fury and “SPRed”, which was also leaked at that time and is assumed to be the next 3D Mario. I usually don’t like to talk about leaks and rumours in discussions like this but I think these in particular are worth bringing up here since there’s a very high chance they are legit. Just some food for thought really.
@@olimar_09About that - those codename leaks came from Midori, who has been posting stuff again tied to the alias "Ryan from the Bronx." And he has since stated SPRed actually refers to...the NES Zapper/Super Scope game at the Nintendo Museum. So we don't really know much about what EPD 8 is doing now. They were hiring for a 2D game in 2019, though...
I’m very optimistic DK will get a new game decently early in the Switch 2 lifespan. Between the movie, Returns HD, the park expansion, Mario vs DK, and just general talk about people wanting a new game, I’m hopeful we get one soon. Now, do I claim to know who’d do it? …Not even remotely. But still, I gotta hold on to hope.
that we never got a third game in Retro’s _Donkey Kong Country Returns_ series is one of gaming’s greatest tragedies. _Tropical Freeze_ was incredible… coming off of that, they could’ve had the third game come out within the first year or two of the Switch’s life (with K. Rool and the Kremlings returning as villains 👌)… and then an HD trilogy pack for later in the Switch’s life… and then a new sort of semi-open 3D platformer for Switch 2 🤷🏻♂️
I've started getting more interested in DK recently, so this video was timed very well! Also, I've never thought about a DK RPG before, but that sounds like an awesome idea!
I think you understated Jungle Beat and in general that era of DK right before Returns, something a lot of folks that discuss the series do I think, probably because they're kids of the Rare era. As someone that was born just a couple years too late for the Rare days to be my nostalgia and not having anyone in my life who did, Jungle Beat was my introduction to the Kong outside Mario spin offs and that game rules. To begin with, the Bongos aren't necessary to play, never owned a pair of them in my life. I get it's the selling point Nintendo was trying to push, but I don't think handwaving the game away as a "bongo blasting gimmick" is fair since they turned out to not even be necessary. But also to me it's just the perfect encapsulation of playing as DK in my opinion. Don't get me wrong i enjoy the snes titles and love Tropical Freeze, but if you were to ask me what my ideal vision for the next DK game is id basically just say a jungle beat sequel but with more of the Kong family present and Kremlings with the ones from Barrel Blast returning as bosses. That's another thing too, i quite enjoy the spin offs of the era. Not Konga, so much but i guess it made bank since there's 3 of the joints lol. But the King of Swing series and Barrel Blast I think are really good times, I'd love a BB remaster or something on switch or the eventual next console with more tracks and modes. To be quite honest, idk why Nintendo didn't bother making their own DK titles all this time if they're just waiting out Retro studios to be available after prime 4 comes out, though giving them some leeway for the pandemic days. They could've come out with something small scale, even just more spin off remakes in the vein of the mario vs dk one. But yeah, it's only a matter of time till the eventual next game i guess
A great video man! I was locked in for that near full hour! I really do hope that someday we will see another shot at a 3D DK in the vein of DK64! But speaking of that game, I’m just hoping it’ll get to NSO soon! This next month will mark 25 years since the release of DK64! Plus we need to see it drop, especially as Grant Kirkhope and Materia Collective are looking to drop a revamp of the DK64 ost then!
I think I'm probably in the minority of people that want another full 3D platformer Donkey Kong title. I recognize the issues of DK64 now with adult hindsight, but at the time it came out, I couldn't stop playing it back then. Even as an adult, I come back to get my fill every few years or so, although nostalgia probably plays a good part of the urge to play.
Donkey Kong to some was robbed in the Mario Kart series. There was an unknown track from Mario Kart called MOB DK. Fans hoped it would be a new Donkey Kong themed new Mario Kart track and fans of Daisy hoped it would be a new track set in Sarasaland. But it was Pirhana Plant Pipeline, a finished form of Mario Kart DS beta track Dokan Course. This track is just about guaranteed to be in Mario Kart X on the Switch 2.
Really bizarre which games actually qualify for the "one game from series per console" and which games don't. I mean, it worked pretty well for Splatoon and Xenoblade. And we just got the third Mario Party (second properly new game) with results yet to be seen. So I don't know what business Nintendo really had advising Ubisoft not to follow up on a surprisingly popular 2017 game with a sequel five years later during the prime of Switch's lifetime. It kind of comes off as Nintendo just simply not wanting Ubisoft to flood a saturated market with yet another Mario title. Have you ever considered for one of your videos looking at sales numbers to find out for which series that typically get more than one game per hardware generation whether its a good idea to run a second or even third lap and which ones should scale back to a single appearance? (You mentioned Metroid Prime, which is fair based on GameCube and Wii second games.) There are also a few series that only run one game per hardware but have sales numbers indicating that the series could possibly start pushing the envelope more and looking into second games (Smash Bros and Mario Kart series being the most obvious examples)
I think it's obvious what they do with DK next and we got a hint of it in the Mario movie, and how cool it would be. Mario 3D platformer featuring playable DK, maybe even co-op with the new machine's power. It'd be a launch title for "Switch 2", I truly think it's obivious. You get 3D DK and marketing of Mario with something of a new take for Mario. Buddy-cop type humour could work too with DK islands and Mario Kingdoms to explore. I think it'd be a good gauge for a new DKC and give retro or someone else time for a 2D platformer.
I’ve always thought that Crash Bandicoot’s gameplay is the perfect for formula for 3D DK, think about it, game about animals with fast paced momentum levels running forward, towards the screen or to the sides sometimes, you collect a bunch of bananas, you break barrels, you ride animals, mine cart sections, you use different kongs… I think “Mario 3D World” type levels work better for 3D Kirby and exploration fits 3D Mario or Zelda more, DK could be Nintendo’s 3D frantic platformer for the family.
Great video! A lot longer than I was expecting. I was a little surprised you didn’t mention the Mario + Rabbids Donkey Kong DLC. Although it makes me quite sad to say it’s impossible for all of Rare to return, clearly picking up every puzzle piece (or Jiggies) of Rare wasn’t necessary for Playtonic to create an excellent platformer equal to the DKC games. That being Yooka-Laylee the Impossible Lair. (I’ve always wondered why Playtonic seemingly hasn’t approached Microsoft about making another BK game.) Also, I have a hunch that after Metroid Prime 4, Retro Studios will be onto making something different from Metroid, judging by how long it’s taken them to develop it, I would guess they’d rather take a break from Metroid for now. Whether they will take on the Kong once more, is to be seen. I’m still holding hope for those 3D DK rumors from years back to be true.
DKC3 is actually still the 10th best-selling SNES game. Star Fox's 4 million is based on a now defunct Argonaut web page that claimed Star Fox sold over 4 million copies. There's no way Nintendo wouldn't have flaunted that number if it was true. For some reason, the editors at Wikipedia have decided to use that number, though.
Need to remember BOTW was also sold on Wii U and myself know a number of people who bought it there. As for multiple Metroid games on a system I am all for Prime 5 being on Switch 2 along with 4, but I am biased. I would sooner see another Yooka game then a Donky Kong game on switch or it succsesor, granted i was never a fan of the ape, now lets talk about a xenosaga trilogy remake :)
Idk if I’m alone, but Donkey Konga was so fun and I wouldn’t mind another sequel of that. Nintendo has so much music in their library that they could easily make a full game with just their music if they don’t want to pay for the rights of music, and I’m not really super into rhythm games either btw
I would love to see Konga at least ported if we don’t get a new one. Hopefully not full price unless it has lots of content. I also wouldn’t mind if it’s a mini game in the next proper donkey Kong
Nobody is noting that donkey Kong not having a game in a while maybe because retro studios is working on Metroid Prime 4 Beyond. I think that there may be one in the works but Metroid prime 4 beyond is the focus right now.
Can you make a video on the future of Captain Toad Treasure Tracker? Would love to hear your thoughts on a potential sequel. I know for sure it would only come out AFTER the next 3D Mario, since both the Wii U & Switch versions had bonus levels respective to their 3D Mario console releases, 3D World for Wii U and Odyssey for Switch
What evidence do we have for Nintendo investing heavily in the growth of Next Level Games? Genuinely curious. I do think there is one very glaring blind spot in this review as far as candidates for a new DK go - Velan Studios is led by Vicarious Visions's founders, who pushed to work on a DK project and left the company after Activision pulled the plug on their early proposal to Nintendo. I think it isn't terribly likely they're working on DK because of their current focus on smaller, quick projects and the apparent layoffs they were hit with earlier this year (it isn't confirmed how many they had to let go but it seems likely they weren't able to avoid any layoffs), but they did already work directly alongside EPD on Mario Kart Live. I think there's one other key detail you overlooked, though, despite your extensive research. We know EPD 8 was hiring for a 2D game 5 years ago. Based on the timing of things, my guess is that the project was only getting started in 2019, and COVID likely complicated matters. Maybe it fell through - but the rumors about EPD Tokyo working on DK again came a few years later, so I doubt it. Either way, that probably means development continued later than anticipated - possibly late enough to where Nintendo decided it would be best to move the project over to the successor, since there aren't any other obvious candidates for a year 1 2D platformer on Switch 2 unless WayForward was given the keys to Wario Land or HAL randomly decides to make a new 2D mainline Kirby over a Forgotten Land followup. You can't tell me Nintendo decided to redesign the DK logo just for a remake of Mario vs. Donkey Kong *or* another rerelease of Donkey Kong Country Returns. Especially not after they redesigned Pikmin's logo as part of a massive push for the franchise. I'm reasonably confident that EPD Tokyo's DK is real.
Interesting points about the EPD 8 hiring. Do you have a source for that? It would make sense although I still suspect they might need some outside help to do anything of enormous scale - Acquire on Brothership and 8ing being a very large parts of the Pikmin 4 credits give a precedent for a hybrid working relationship. When the Brothership credits are available, that might be an interesting case study to look into. With regard to NLG, Wikipedia tracks their growth (
@nintendoforecast I see. I think RUclips flags any links as spam now, but Nintendo Life has an article from August 6th, 2020 about Nintendo hiring a level designer to work on a new "2D action game" with the position being in Tokyo, not Kyoto
“Ahead of Zelda Majoras Mask” You could see people buying that game thinking it would be like OoT but no. It was more of a garden project to help Nintendo promote Aonuma.
That would be very difficult, since characters like Pipsy and Tiptup are owned by Microsoft and Rare. But, should they pish for it, it would have to be a collaboration of sorts.
43:44 A DK RPG wouldn’t be worth the wait in my honest opinion. We're in a decade long DK drought, I think it's vital they get a new more true to formula game before that. RPG is a format I want this franchise to stay away from. Make a DK competitive shooter before an turn base RPG. I think they should try to 3D 2.5D game like Kirby or Crash, otherwise make a new DKC.
To me this is simple. Donkey Kong games are harder than Mario games. They are for the more “hard core” audience. Which is always going to lead to a smaller fan base.
Whqt about star fox, splatoon and animal crossing deep dives and how the expansion of big worlds is it gonna continue? No its expensive and too much work. Id be intrested in a video of star fox and the above framchises and also what is top priority for nintendo apart from mario and zelda
He already kinda did a deep dive on video on Star Fox about 4 months ago titled "Star Fox strikes back" and it's about 25 mins long. I recommend it, it's pretty good.
Thx for talking about the best monke. It’s absolutely outrageous how little attention this amazing franchise has received. I’m of the opinion Retro Studios should no longer be responsible for DK games, not a single new entry in 10 years are you kidding me? They keep wasting precious time on Metroid it’s been way too long, a more deserving studio should take the reins.
Personally I've never been a fan of any of the Dk games and I don't think it's nowhere near to being one of Nintendo's best franchises That said it definitely could do better and get bigger especially after the mario movie and the amusement park expansion. It has the potential to be a lot more prominent than it currently is

I want a new chapter so much! I'll play the remastered in january, but i need something new
A great video man!

Interesting idea - thanks!
I'll probably have to wait 15 years for 3D donkey long
I’ve always thought that Crash Bandicoot’s gameplay is the perfect for formula for 3D DK, think about it, game about animals with fast paced momentum levels running forward, towards the screen or to the sides sometimes, you collect a bunch of bananas, you break barrels, you ride animals, mine cart sections, you use different kongs…
I think “Mario 3D World” type levels work better for 3D Kirby and exploration fits 3D Mario or Zelda more, DK could be Nintendo’s 3D frantic platformer for the family.
Theres a reason why Crash Banooca never reached DK's heights.
(I’ve always wondered why Playtonic seemingly hasn’t approached Microsoft about making another BK game.)
Also, I have a hunch that after Metroid Prime 4, Retro Studios will be onto making something different from Metroid, judging by how long it’s taken them to develop it, I would guess they’d rather take a break from Metroid for now.
3D donkey Kong is the only way - there's no chance in hell side-scrolling donkey Kong its going to save him
I think Wayforward could make a pretty good DKC game
Nobody is noting that donkey Kong not having a game in a while maybe because retro studios is working on Metroid Prime 4 Beyond. I think that there may be one in the works but Metroid prime 4 beyond is the focus right now.
We need another Donkey Kong game!! Its been too long, anything DK i will buy as quickly as possible, Please Nintendo😟
Nintendo shouldn’t have giveaway rareware studios. They would have produced so many awesome ip’s for them. What a shame …
What I would give for a Donkey Kong 64 2…
4:49 Minor nitpick: every 3D Super Mario Title. Unless you consider 3D Mario “Super Mario” and 2D “Super Mario Bros” which is kinda confusing imo
Yeah, I must admit I mentally consider 3D to be Super Mario and 2D SMB but that's not ideal.
Tbf I don't think the next console needs 1 Metroid Prime game, let alone 2
"you don't deserve to Donkey Kong" ~ @retrobird 😂😊
Can you make a video on the future of Captain Toad Treasure Tracker? Would love to hear your thoughts on a potential sequel. I know for sure it would only come out AFTER the next 3D Mario, since both the Wii U & Switch versions had bonus levels respective to their 3D Mario console releases, 3D World for Wii U and Odyssey for Switch
Interesting one... no promises but I'll give it some thought.
@@nintendoforecast the story behind the development is interesting as well!
I think RUclips flags any links as spam now, but Nintendo Life has an article from August 6th, 2020 about Nintendo hiring a level designer to work on a new "2D action game" with the position being in Tokyo, not Kyoto
it's not diddy kong's quest it's "diddy's kong quest". as in kongquest.
“Ahead of Zelda Majoras Mask” You could see people buying that game thinking it would be like OoT but no. It was more of a garden project to help Nintendo promote Aonuma.
*gaiden project
Optically it might not be the best time to be working on a Diddy Kong Racing revival even if there was internal desire for it.
That would be very difficult, since characters like Pipsy and Tiptup are owned by Microsoft and Rare. But, should they pish for it, it would have to be a collaboration of sorts.
RARE!
Dungle Beat :')
To me this is simple. Donkey Kong games are harder than Mario games. They are for the more “hard core” audience. Which is always going to lead to a smaller fan base.
It’s an absolute joke we haven’t had a new dk game 💔
Hear me out, Donkey Kong Warriors by Koei Tecmo, It makes plenty of sense and it should not be as expensive as a new platformer.
Switch Era what. That was some years ago 😂
You're old enough
"niche franchise."
DK64 is the best Donkey Kong game to date
Personally I've never been a fan of any of the Dk games and I don't think it's nowhere near to being one of Nintendo's best franchises
That said it definitely could do better and get bigger especially after the mario movie and the amusement park expansion. It has the potential to be a lot more prominent than it currently is
IMO the DKC games were always better 2D platformers than Mario...and in the case of DKC2 and Tropical Freeze even two of the very best of the genre.
You sound evil. Like a bond villain.
Why? You don't wanna talk about switch 2 now😂😂😂😂?
Click bait creators for exposed last week
Dude... Not only do my non-S2 videos outnumber my S2 videos by about 3:1, I've had two recent videos where I've used the titles to specifically warn people off clicking if they just want S2 stuff! 😂
bryxxdore4150
Hey buddy, the Dunning-Krueger Effect is like BO. You can smell other people's aroma, but you cant smell yours.
Check your second sentence. Doesnt make sense.
Are you a bit thick? Literally the previous video on this channel is saying not to expect an announcement this week. Literally in the title, you didn't even need to open it.
donket kong was a mistake made by a young inexperien ced Nintendo. the sooner he is forgorten the better for us all :(
