I think current Pokémon and Wii/DS-era Zelda are good examples of "not enough" gimmicks, where you wonder what the point of marketing the "innovation" was when it didn't result in much functional change. Sonic OTOH is a good example of "too much" gimmicks, where the "innovation" is implemented in such a way that it DOES have an effect, but undermines the appeal of the original core in the end (usually because the "innovation" itself doesn't really fit with the core anyway). Tricky balance of course, but that's how I delineate it.
