FatalshockGS I've thought the same about every single game comparison so far. There's really hardly anything in it apart from a few barely noticeable nicer textures. I'm sticking with my Pro and SSD with the faster loading times they bring.
CEWIIH It all depends on your platform of choice, bud. Personally, I like that Xbox now gives me a chance to enjoy high end graphics, but I wouldn’t tell any invested PS4 players to make the jump. Were the X not a thing I would still happily play on my Xbox One.
For a extra $50 why dont you get actual 4k?

Going by VG Tech pixel count - The Xbox One X version uses a dynamic resolution with the native resolution ranging from 1920x2160 to 3840x2160. PS4 PRO resolution fluctuates between 960x2160 and 2640x2160. Quite a difference
So no locked 4k and no ultra settings. Both the PS4 Pro and xbox one X are a sad joke. PC FTW !

Dynamic resolution is really unacceptable both consoles are using tricks to display a certain resolution but if you guys just want to continue with this resolution war yeah the Xbox One X win all the time. Pretty much the same settings on both console the Xbox has a bit sharper Shadow and a bit sharper and ambient occlusion that is all. And you're telling me this system's not doing a little bit more than the pro.

Someone who is stupid enough to believe all PlayStation owners are insecure fanboys, who claim that graphics are unimportant after Xbox One X releases, after spending the last 3 years saying PS4 had better graphics? I am not a fanboy, I do own a PlayStation but I believe someone who blindly follows a brand , be it Xbox or PlayStation, should re-evaluate their life decisions. And I believe Xbox One X is a great system, way better than PS4 Pro is; still, I believe the Pro is a great system for your money, although it doesn´t come close to the X ( still, Microsoft is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay behind Sony and Nintendo when it comes to exclusives).

Playing this on a base ps4 on a 4k screen really surprised me. While it can be a little soft looking, the TAA really takes out all the jagged edges. It almost looks like it's 1440p instead of 1080p.

Y'all promised an Xbox One X comparison to PC and never delivered... I'd really been looking forward to it to determine if the One X version was a suitable stand-in for PC. IMO there's enough improvement on Xbox One X that it's close enough. It doesn't seem to be missing any visual features, and it seems to use the highest or second highest settings for the most important stuff. Basically all PS4 Pro has is a slight advantage in object and shadow detail fade. Something carried over from the original PS4 vs Xbox One comparison. I think it's something hardcoded into the versions. Interesting that they manipulate the visual settings so clearly between consoles. At first I thought they were all roughly the same, but after seeing many direct comparisons, OG Xbone and PS4 are running with lowered lighting, shadows, and ambient occlusion across the board. It can be clearly seen in many comparison videos. The base consoles stand out with a different light and dark balance, and markedly duller shadow depth and colors. I wonder which settings affect this.
Hey Digital Foundry I think people may find it interesting if you do a frame-rate test on split-screen modes in older and backwards compatible COD games on Xbox X, and compare to the Xbox One and 360.

When playing on either a really nice high end 1080p tv or 4k tv you can't tell a difference I have both systems and because of the graphical style any resolution over 1080p looks amazing with little Aliasing..
Obviously when it comes to resolution, xbox x is better. but honestly you can go wrong with both versions. good job!

The difference being the xbone and ps4 were released at the same time, with xbone being more expensive and ps4 beat it.
But now the one x is out a year later and more expensive and the only difference is resolution and shadows (which you don't notice during gameplay).

PC and ps4 pro is the best combination Pc for the ultra high performance and PS4 for the amazing exclusives and all the Xbox exclusives are on pc so no need to buy a Xbox one x

You can stream your PC with relatively little input lag to your TVs now...and you've been able to do this for a while. Samsung TVs also come with the Steam Link app. You can game on your PC games...on your TV, on the couch with a controller from a separate room. Valve even made a UI specifically for it.

I now own a PS4 pro and XB1X. Xbox one x will have better graphics, and Sony has the better exclusives. Makes buying multi platform games easy, but still gotta have the Sony exclusives.

Red Hunter117 you haven't played any of those exclusives apparently. Bloodborne, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nier: Automata, Nioh, Persona 5, Yakuza 0 and Kiwami, Last Guardian, and Until Dawn to name a few. And those are just the ones I have played.

Let me just say I really appreciate DF pumping these comparison videos out the way they've been. I'm a current Pro owner that's been considering getting a 1X, and these videos have been great for helping me decide whether dropping the 500 bucks is worth it or not. So far from what I've seen in the last week, looks like my money will probably be best spent upgrading my GTX 970 to a 1080 this Christmas. I reeeeeaaaally want the Xbox to wow me, I don't even know why, I just like buying new crap I don't really need. lol. I messed around with a One X earlier today at a Microsoft store, and I just wasn't blown away. Forza looked decent, and they had Halo running on another machine that looked once again, decent. Let me say this, it would have helped if Microsoft had a "must have" exclusive at launch. Guess they couldn't coordinate it better. I guess we'll see if PUBG's release this December on Xbox sways me any.

Better quality Multi-plats Xbone or less powerful ps4 pro but superior games. I have both original consoles but I have to be honest Cuphead was the only xbox game I enjoyed since sunset overdrive.

Digital Foundry, you are right about the temporal reconstruction. The PC version allows for 50%, 75% and Native Pre-T2X Render resolution. I believe the consoles use the 50% Render resolution setting. For example, if the native resolution was to be set to 2560x1440 then the Pre-T2X will be rendering at 1280x1440. It greatly improves performance without impacting the visuals too much... But does introduce artifacting as you've mentioned.
Stuttering needs patching.

So, for the majority of gamers who only have a 1080p TV - the only difference is shadow and AO which most people wouldn't notice unless sat right in front of the Tv and playing them both side by side. Okay, so no difference then. Well, other than stuttering on the Xbox

While the 1st look looks pretty good on both consoles, I still can't bring myself to buy any CoD game these days. My last CoD game was the original Modern Warfare, because I'm really not a fan of annual game series.

GraveUypo can’t compare it to BF1 as I never played it. The campaign I’ve played so far is decent with some good variety, this obviously is just my opinion but I am enjoying it a lot. What I would suggest is play the campaign on veteran.

The Pro isn't a Upgrade at all, the Ps4 was running games just fine, however the Xbone really needed a Upgrade
You can’t “rush” a console. It takes a lot of work, even just to have the fabrication and assembly infrastructure in place. You can’t knock it out in a year.
The difference comes from their purpose.
Xbox One X is to fix the mistakes of the original Xbox One. And it over overcompensates for the original consoles most stand out weakness. Essentially this is a replacement. Expect everything Microsoft shows to be demo’d on the X going forwards.
PS4 Pro was to fill in the gap between generations, stop people getting bored, and offering a small boost over the current PS4 for those that want it -while not replacing it. SONY have been very careful not to sell it as a replacement. It also was needed to properly support the VR headset. SONY shows games on the original PS4 hardware still (God of War).
The price differences clearly show what each is aiming for.
If each box cost $500 you could reasonably compare. But one is $100 cheaper.... so if you don’t mind softer shadows when zoomed in 400% then there you go. Else grab the $500 box. But for many people the decision will also be down to how invested they are in each respective ecosystem. If you’ve got a library of PS4 games, friends on there etc you’re unlikely to dump them all just to get some sharper looking third parties on a new box.

Any PS4 fan is triggered... they payed 100 bucks less and the games looks and runs very well. Its normal to get a better quality by paying 100 dolars more, i think that the two systems make its work very good according its sell price.

Owning a xbox one x and ps4 pro. Both games look virtually identical, you have to be stranding next to the tv with a magnifying glass to notice any slight difference. When playing at these resolutions and sitting at basic viewing distance you are wasting your money, if you think your going to see a major difference with these games. The only time these small differences in resolution ,texture quality matter a bit is if your playing on a monitor thats a foot away from your face.
These videos are made to fuel console wars nonsense and to tick boxes. We won't see true visual upgrades until PS5 or Xbox 2 . With better lighting, scene and asset complexity, advanced ai, 60 fps as standard......hopefully.
It's safe to say now that the Xbox X is not a "Uncompromised" 4K machine.. It is using Dynamic 4K in the majority of it s games. It beats the Pro, but its not as good as Microsoft made it out to be.
I think I'll wait a year until ww2 costs 10$

Another game that looks good on both consoles regardless of resolution. I also picked up that frame rate is basically about the same on both platforms as well.

Both look 99% the same and the differences are so small and minuscule and downright unnoticeable that to argue about them is a exercise in pettiness. The tiny differences in shadows or AO is hardly noticable at all and you have to look real hard to see them. I think the 2 most damning things about them is the dithered checkerboard looking effect on Pro and all the extra hitching/dipping on the X.

Hints of checker boarding, dynamic resolution scaling on the vertical, not real 4k. "It will be interesting to see how it stacks up against the PC version". You just told us it don't when you said it used all those gimmicks to do as well as it did. Why bother?
PlayStation fanboys in 2013, its all about resolution! Fast forward to 2017 and now its but, but, but, its all about games not resolution! Face it Sony fanboys it is about resolution and performance if it wasn't you wouldn't be here watching and commenting about these videos. Pro was a mistake of a mid-gen cycle upgrade, X on the other hand has been exactly the upgrade Xbox needed and the X is showing it!

Pro at 300-340 dollar is a far better deal than a 500 dollar X1X. Sales will stay at 3:1 just like the whole year. X1X is too little too late.
deltafarce411 the funny thing is that in 2013 xbox fanboys said: it's all about the games and not the resolution. They used the 'more games' argument back then. And look at it now. The roles have switched. Suddenly resolution/power is all that matters to xbox fanboys instead of games.

deltafarce411 The X clearly isn't "the upgrade Xbox needed" though is it? if it was, it'd be pumping out consistent 60fps/native 4K monsters and the governments of the world would be ordering PS4 and Switch scrappage schemes and we'd have National Phil Spencer Day every November.
However we don't; the Pro will continue to sell more games and consoles, the X will continue to be an inconsistent letdown which main advantages can only be shown in '600% Zoom Vision' and I'll continue playing mostly 360 games on my X cos my PS4 is still my multiplat console of choice with its superior UI and loading times with an SSD. :)

Michelle Alexandria it does reach 4K but it was never claimed to be uncompromised like the x which was a big lie. Thats why forza had to have lower textures to compensate 4K...oh the exposure..ohh...but minecraft is 4K
They said that........... expensive console does provide you better graphics which you hardly notice while in action on a 4K screen from a 4-5 feet of distance.

I've been analyzing a handful of X enhanced games and there's no doubt that the X is a stellar console. I've played several campaign levels of the PC versions of both Wolfenstein II and CoD WWII and I have to say, if I didn't have an a/b switch between PC and X versions I'd always think the X version is the PC.
- Digital foundry PS4 1080p vs Xbox One 900p :Xbox looks significantly worse and blurry. PS4 is way way better!
- Digital foundry PS4 Pro vs Xbox One X: Xbox resolution is better but it doesn't make a big dfference they both look great...

igordelija hahaha. I love it when people are so wrong. I currently only play on PS4 and PC. I sold my Xbox One last year because there was no games I truly enjoyed. So I'm not a fanboy. I'm just a gamer. To be honest I think I'm probably more a Nintendo guy than anything else, yet I don't even own a Switch. (I'm waiting for the new Switch + ^^)
Neocaron it's called diminishing returns the pixel density makes it harder to tell as resolutions go up especially when there is temporal blurring present.

There is more of a noticeable difference in 900p vs 1080p, now the resolution is so high it's hard to see the difference. It isn't double standards, it's just that you're not very bright :/
