    Thanks for the tips. After replacing a failed thermostat in a '99 beetle, I had a hell of a time burping it - having it quickly overheat, breaking thermostat housings and wasting that expensive VW coolant twice. I finally called a local VW repair shop and asked what I might be doing wrong. I told him the process I was using (fill with coolant, open heater valve and start car, keep reservoir topped-off, etc.) like I had done on other vehicles in the past. I was told that there wasn't any special procedure, it would burp itself and there had to be something else wrong with the car.
    I purchased new parts again and decided to search RUclips to see if there were any other methods, and found your video. Yesterday, I grabbed my Mighty-Vac and followed your method and am happy to report that the car has not overheated after running for over a half hour in 90° daytime temperatures here. Thanks again for posting the video.

    Excellent video. I appreciate your detailed explanation and the tricks you demonstrate. For those out there having a difficult time bleeding the system, especially if the engine overheated or a hose blew, etc., make VERY SURE to check the water pump impeller through the thermostat hole. In my situation, there was NO flow from the small hose at the reservoir, and I could spin the impeller on the shaft with my fingers even though no blades were broken.
    Thanks for the great video, cheers.

    Glad I found this. A friend picked up a 2001 Jetta with the 2.0. First time ever working on one. Friend was told by the guy he bought it from that the head gasket was blown so put new head gasket on and got it all back together. filled coolant and have been trying to figure out how to bleed the system. Thank you for this video. Was working on bleeding and broke my pump and have replace it so I can get it done. Thinking now that there was nothing wrong with head gasket. They replaced a hose connector on the head and never bled the cooling system.

  • @Snowdog216
    @Snowdog216 Год назад

    Good info, Thanks! To others, note many VW/Audis have a weep/vent hole in the hose connected to the heater core. You will most likely have to remove the plastic drain tray cover. Not a big deal. Look up other videos. Be VERY careful removing hose from heater core ni pp___le. You need a pick tool to loosen it from the heater core, then gently rotate to break the seal. If you break that you are looking at 1500+ in repairs. So if not comfortable with that, just take it to a radiator shop to burp the system.

    Great Video CarMan and cargirl. Really appreciate the patience you have to make this video. Very clear and useful information . Im about to tackle my coolant problem Thursday. I have a 1992 jetta with a 1.8 8v motor . The previous owner said the only problem is the two plastic housings and O-rings for the thermostat and that other piece on driver side of the motor head. They both leak. I filled it to the top and have not bleed the system yet. The previous owner said he just did it . But those plastic housings O rings need replaced. Anyway, the O-ring on the coolant tank I noticed today was bad also. I drove it for only 6 miles and parked it and popped the hood and noticed coolant flowing out of the overflow tank. Ill follow your tips . Kinda confused on what your doing with the pump though!

    • @jamiejonesthecarman
      @jamiejonesthecarman  8 лет назад +1

      +Daron Lapping Thanks for the feedback man. The first thing to point out here is that all of your leaks must be fixed prior to trying to bleed the air out of your system or it will just continue to suck air in. The older 1.8 engines are very easy to bleed so if you have any problems just let me know. The pump works just like bleeding your brakes.

    Sorry you do not use the prestone green for a VW. G11, G12, G13 depending on model year, but I think G13 works for all models. Green prestone is has a different chemical makup and will shorten you cooling system life. Head gasket failure corrosion etc.

    • @southeastsenders3527
      @southeastsenders3527 8 лет назад +3

      +Johnny Woo Green is fine. It corrodes when you MIX a vw coolant and an off the shelf. The green he is using is FINE if he flushed before.

    • @MrWoowootila
      @MrWoowootila 8 лет назад +10

      Sorry, I will believe the manufacturer. Green is not on the approved manufacturers list. I have seen numerous people put green in vehicles and have cooling system problems. It might not be immediate, but there are problems down the road. Look at the chemical makeup and you will understand why. There are numerous websites that talk about this. From memory some due not recommend coolant with phosphates and silicates. Japanese coolant is different than the European, vs the american vehicles. It is even varies by years. I have tried Green in a old VW about 25 years ago and suffered a head gasket failure. Only use red and purple now on my VW (approved) and have never had problems. Sorry I will believe the engineers and chemists than some guy on youtube.

      I own 2 mk1 rabbits and a mk3 1.8t, green is fine if flushed before lol I run it in all my cars, I used to run g12.. The car was built to u.s specs. It does not NEED euro coolant lol.

    • @MrWoowootila
      @MrWoowootila 8 лет назад +4

      Does the dealer use green? Is it VW approved? How about VW forums, what is the overwhelming recommendation. How about any trained VW mechanic? Sorry,, you do not knowing what they are taking about.

    • @southeastsenders3527
      @southeastsenders3527 8 лет назад +1

      actually the reason i switched is the fact the very reputable shop in my area, that people come from out of state for work/fabrication. run green in their old rabbits with 2 year changes. they've literally had hundreds of them. And check out the fourms. I'm happy to say there are plenty of old vw fourms saying green is fine to run with a flush and changes.

    Hi, great video! I have a pretty bad coolant leak on my Passat TDI, all the coolant drains every 2 weeks or so. My heating also isn't working (digital Climatronic system), I'm guessing this is likely due to the coolant leak causing airlocks? I'm not sure if the heating has ever worked as I bought it in summer, before the leak occurred. Any tips would be appreciated!

    • @jamiejonesthecarman
      @jamiejonesthecarman  9 лет назад

      +Nathan Beard Hi Nathan, if you don't have heat, it is very likely due to the fact that you have those air pockets in the system and they need to be bled out. The first thing that you have to figure out though, is where the leak is actually coming from. Do you know where the leak is or do we need to work on some steps to locate it?

    • @nathanbeard1769
      @nathanbeard1769 9 лет назад

      +JamieJones TheCarMan Thanks for the reply, I'll have a look underneath
      this weekend and see if I can find the leak. Hopefully it's just a split
      hose or something, as it seems to leak at a constant rate regardless of
      whether I use the car or not. Thanks for your help.

    My VW Golf mk 4 1999 TDI cannot be flushed of air in this way. I do not have the plug with the horseshoe clip on my car. The syphon method did not work for me but the technique from the Chis fix it video worked. Simply after draining the system from the tap under the radiator. Fill the recirculation reservoir white coolant bottle. Start the engine and watch the level of coolant in the reservoir . Keep topping up the reservoir until all the air comes out of the system . If you do not keep topping up then the level in the reservoir will slowly drop. If you attach a clear plastic hose to the small black hose that returns to the white water bottle then you can actually see the air bubbles . Over about 30 minutes the air bubbles gradually stop and the coolant level in the white recirculation bottle will also stop falling, then youre done. This is how I did it.

    That upper hose to the expansion tank is your "Steam" hose - none of this is necessary as that hose will do that for you. You just keep checking the level after refilling after cooling. AMSOIL's low-toxicity coolant is the best to use. Compatible and offers more corrosion protection using any water.

    Hi Apologies for a comment on a late video, but I have a 2010 VW Golf 1.6 TDI bluemotion. For a couple of months now I've had some serious overheating issues the car constantly goes above 90 degrees Celsius (normal operating temp) and the cooling fan is running 90% of the time, even when the car is off. Strangely, the harder you drive the car the less it overheats .. I've left it to an approved vw dealer 5 times now and they've yet to solve the issue. Car has had a new water pump, timing belt, thermostat & another sensor put in along with 3 new fills of coolant and a radiator flush .. the garage claim that it is an airlock within the cooling system and have apparently bled it 3 times yet failed to eradicate my problems. When they bleed it it takes them 3 hours. Any idea / advice would be greatly appreciated..

    Hi Jamie it's art Tuinman again about that 2000 volkswagen beetle. I had a scanner put on it and it said a bad crankshaft sensor and also about a P1 code, it's a dealer code and his scanner wouldn't tell him what it was. do you have any idea as to what it might be. I've changed the sensor and it still won't fire. do I have to take it to a volkswagen dealer or is there something else I can try?

    Jamie, really enjoy your videos, but would like to ask you a question if I could. I have a 05 beetle that the heater core got total blockage due to not using VW coolant. Can not afford to get it fixed right now but thought I could just bypass it for now until I can afford to get it fixed. I disconnected the hoses from the heater core and connected them together, tried to use distilled water to flush system but once I drained the fluid I was not able to refill the system. I put fluid in the reservoir tank but the fluid does not fill the system it just stays in the tank. i am just curious if I've missed a something, and is this a good idea to bypass the core.

    I have a 1999 Volkswagon Beetle with a 2.0L engine. I replaced the thermastat and the old one was missing half of it. Just the top metal rim was there. I could not find the other parts. Too pics of the inside and did not see them in the water pump area. I have a problem when the thermastat opens the res tank fills and overflows. All hoses get very hot but the fans do not come on. I have pulled the plug from the switch on the radiator, used a jumper wire and the fans will run on low and high speeds. Have replaced this switch but still no fans. The big relay part number does end with a H instead of the K that you mention in another video. Is it normal for the res tank to fill when the thermastat opens and what else to check for fans not coming on? Thank you in advance for any assistance. earl

    i have a 2005 beetle. Drove it for around 4 or 5 years before i ever saw the hot engine light come on. I checked the reservoir and it was below the minimum mark so i went to walmart and bought the green coolant prestone. Hugee mistake. I did this during the summer and the car seemed fine until winter arrived . That's when i turned the temperature knob of the A/c to hot and no hot air would come off through the vents. Turns out that mixing the G12 pink coolant with the regular green prestone creates a chemical reaction that forms a sludge inside the system that ends up clogging the heater core which is like a small evaporator coil, preventing the hot liquid from flowing through it thus producing hot air for passenger's confort. I also noticed that now the reservoir level would go from max to min within 3 months, probably from a leak developed somewhere. Maybe a corroded pipe or something which i havent figured out yet. IF you make this mistake, i recommend flushing the system right away and use the specific G12 pink coolant. Aparently you can also use G13 which is purple and last ten years. I didnt find out about my problem until after six months. I used to think dealerships only wanted to make money out of customers selling their expensive fluids but ive learned that there's science behind to back up the manufacturers recommendation on every specific fluid developed to help extend the life of the materials of each single part in your engine and that goes for engine oil, Transmission oil, steering fluid etc etc.

    What's good to say what kind of Volkswagen in the title not writing me personally. Because for those of us who own Volkswagen Passat with one of eight engine types. The process can take three different bleed screws to bleed the system including disconnection of the heater core.

      +Art Tuinman the only thing I can think of that would kill the fuel injectors as well as the spark is the crank sensor as far as unplugging it to recharge it would have zero bearing on restarting the vehicle, are you sure that you do not have injectors opening and no fire

    hello, I have a 99 beetle and its leaking coolant from underneath the car, its not coming from the bottle where you put the coolant and its not coming from the hoses you showed on your video? wherever its coming from it leaks off of the oil pan. Could it be the actual water pump?

    • @jamiejonesthecarman
      @jamiejonesthecarman  6 лет назад +1

      If you can see the leak coming down from the side where the drive belts are at that's more than likely your water pump if it's coming from where your Transmissions at on that side it's probably your water jackets were the thermostat and all that stuff is at that are kind of in the middle who got two places it could be coming from

  • @markman63

    You mentioned that 195 is operating temperature. Mine seems to be around 210 in moderate traffic and in cool temperatures (60F). I have exchanged waterpump, thermostat, temperature sensor, radiator fan switch and temperature control module.
    When I just let it sit idle the fans come on at 210 and bring the temperature down to 200 after a 10 second cycle consistently.
    What's your take on this? Radiator plugged? Head gasket leaking? Or just running hot. The red warning light never comes on.

    • @jamiejonesthecarman
      @jamiejonesthecarman  8 лет назад

      +markman63 and you know its not on typical for these things to run a little warmer saying that 200-210 range so as long as the fans are cool and down and it's keeping it down I wouldn't sweat it are you actually reading that off of a computer or you just guessing from the dance coming on and off

    • @jamiejonesthecarman
      @jamiejonesthecarman  8 лет назад

      +markman63 the fan relay switch which is actually a module sometimes starts going bad and make calls the fans to come on more frequent than they should as well so it doesn't necessarily mean that you have an overheating issue

    • @markman63
      @markman63 8 лет назад

      +markman63 I finally exchanged the radiator as the last piece of the cooling system that I have not replaced and this is what I get now: In 80 degree weather 202-210 on the freeway going 70, and 220 in stop and go traffic. The fans come on around 220 and push it back down to 212. The red light comes on at 270. I measured temperature with an OBDII reader and an aftermarket temp gauge. Letting it be now.

      +Art Tuinman give me a little more information was it starting fine back to back and then just wouldn't start when you let it sit a little while and start back or just a no start , sounds like a crank sensor cause they randomly will just stop working if they ran for just a few minutes and then let it sit for a little while and it starts back

    • @jamiejonesthecarman
