By far the best King Kong remake ever made and easily one of the best remakes of a classic ever put to film. Rather than being a simple cash grab made nearly identical to the original not being a completely different, and unrecognizable reimagining, peter Jackson’s King Kong strikes that perfect balance between faithfulness to the original while being an original movie with its own identity. I love how creepy and forbidding skull island is in this remake, as well as all the dinosaurs and the creatures, and the 3 hr runtime (while a little too long I’ll admit) is paced out in a way to not feel boring, as I enjoyed the first act of the movie leading up to the island as well as the human characters, who are much better than here in the original imo. Yea I agree that we probably never truly need another remake after this one. It's a great retelling of the story.
Always loved Naomi Watts' interpretation. Ann Farrow doesn't necessarily need to be a screaming damsel in distress. She can be smart, witty and able to take care of herself. And Kong is what I always imagine to possibly only exist as a gigantic silverback gorilla. Never did understood the human obsession with a bipedal ape, which is physically impossible.

The Kong was great, and to offset that idiot Jack Black, it at least had Naomi Watts! But it was too long, overblown and the Mr. Hayes/Jimmy story was absolutely unnecessary. If people needed those two characters to figure out this was a "Heart of Darkness" story, then they're not paying enough attention. The natives were inexplicably too hostile and Adrian Brody was a silly "love interest/hero". If it didn't have Jack Black and they cut it down to 90 minutes, it has a chance.
I don't care what these uncultured swine think. This movie is a masterpiece to me. To me, every scene has a purpose, a purpose that expresses more thought than what as it appears. The music is also great along with the characters' acting. Jack Black played a great Carl Denham. And characters: Jack Driscoll, Ann Darrow, Hayes, Jimmy, Englehorn and even Lumpy just meshed together to make the story feel so organic and the actor/actress' ability to make you just sink in to the movie is breathtaking to me. When I was 5 years old in 2005 watching this on DVD, I literally had my parents skip all the "boring" scenes every time I rewatched it, [every scene that didn't involve Skull Island or Ann/Kong moments except for the V-Rex scene] But now, I have to watch the ENTIRE movie because I love it that much, every scene has a major importance to it. It was generally adult, but it didn't involve a lot of mature things except only blood and violence, which is why I loved it as a kid. The lighting, the colors, the music, the setting, the acting, the humor, the advancing plot on the Venture ship while also reminding the audience that they'll be close to Skull Island anytime soon (their impending doom) is what makes the long first act arguably the best part in my opinion with only some of Act 2 - 3 coming into the fray. Weird, I loved the "action" bits as a kid for the longest time, but once I turned 18 and rewatched it again after so many years. I love what I considered the "boring" parts as a kid. THAT'S WHY I LOVE THIS MOVIE! To me, this is a work of art. And I hate how underrated and how overly criticized it is for "peoples' preferences of the movie's runtime length, or lacking vision of the great acting."
I remember a couple of years ago we were watching a movie at University. I don't remember what movie it was, but it was set in the late 80s and at some point they mentioned King Kong. Some students started to mumble to each other, and one of them clearly said "wait, did King Kong already exist in the 80s?" That's when i realized that a good chunk of the general audience probably thinks that Peter Jackson created the character with this movie, and now i'm sure that there are people out there who think that Godzilla 98 is the original Godzilla
I absolutely adore this film. It may be incredibly long, but I hardly notice it when I'm watching because of how in-depth it expands on the world the film builds.
In my opinion, this is the Best Movie Remake of All-Time. It hits all the correct notes from the original, while adding more unique, genuine layers to it without sacrificing the identity and heart of the original entirely. And that's not easy to do. Plus, Peter Jackson had FULL Creative Control and he's a Hardcore King Kong fan which were both excellent and quite rare bonuses. Great review.
My childhood film. I love everything about it. And I love the game for it too. I remember as a kid I'd always tear up when Kong met his demise, you saw the life leave his eyes. He's probably the most badass Kong we've had yet.
I watched this movie constantly as a kid. If you don't have the "patience" for a 3 hour movie as an adult, you might have issues. This movie is great and has amazing pacing
Sure, this movie can be too long, but i felt the character development, worldbuilding, gorgeous cinematography, exciting action scenes and especially the performances made it all payoff. Sure its a bit too long, but it’s worth it in my book.
I remember this from when I was a kid. I got a toy of Kong and a V-Rex that’s jaw could “rip” open. This movie, especially for he extended version, is an example of movie magic and the art storytelling at its finest.
I was 6 years old when King Kong came out in 2005. How about you? What other movies did you see in the theater back in 2005? Did you see Batman Begins in the theater or on dvd in 2005?
This is personally one of my favorite movies of all, I loved the classic as a kid and was excited for when it came out. I love how it honored the classic and was still its own film. What really makes it for me is that Ann and Kong relationship is actually something more then just scared damsel and terrifying beast. I like all the side characters and their little arcs, the animation and vfx is pretty top notch. My few complaints would be the few kinda pointless or unnecessary scenes, cut the ship time a little like ann and jack awkward meeting or bruse with his postars, i do like the bronto stampede, but would have preferred the swamp attack instead.
Despite its many flaws, nothing will ever stop me from loving this movie. It is perhaps one of the most epic, large scale, and grand adventure movies of all time and as a child it captured my imagination in ways no other movie could.
Honestly, this was my favorite iteration of King Kong, even after skull island. Despite it’s flaws, it’s representation of Kong is simply beautiful, tragic, yet action packed and compelling! Was the biggest fan of it as a kid 💘
6:08 "there is a tighter and more exciting film within this epic" seemed like a great way to describe it. I watched this with a group of friends a few days ago and it really felt like 2 movies together. Everyone enjoyed it, but it really dragged at certain parts which ruined the experience for most of us. Personally, I loved this movie, but would've been happier if it was 30 minutes shorter
Peter Jackson's King Kong is possibly my favorite film of all time. I love the action scenes, the characters, and I personally prefer this version of the story a lot more than the original. I'm one of the few who don't mind the run time. I never have. In fact, ever since I first saw the extended cut, that's been my preferred version. I love this movie so much, and I'll rewatch it any day.
I actually turned off the film because I didn't want to watch Kong die. It's more than sad, even more than simply tragic. Sirkis and Jackson really brought Kong to life, and I loved the critter.
On a cold winter's night in Peoria, IL while attending a safety conference, I ordered a deep dish pizza from the UNO restaurant in the hotel, went to my room, ordered this movie and settled in for an entertaining evening. I made it through the 1st hour and reached Skull Island. Next thing I remember was waking up and seeing the credits rolling. Must have been the deep dish...
"Let me claim the Brontosaurus stampede looks dated now rather than constructively explaining how and why!" Seriously, I've seen tons of CGI today that looks worse. I think the Brontosaurus stampede looks amazing. Only "bad" things about it might be that the lightning is slightly off on the human characters, and that it's a bit covnenient that they survived (though, not really impossible). But, none of that has to do with the CGI on the actual Brontosauruses. It's nothing but a baseless claim. You clearly don't know or understand how CGI works, and you are only criticising it to jump on the bandwagon. Otherwise, you wouldn't just make that baseless claim without backing it up.
I once watched this movie twice in a row. The Extended cut actually. Wasn't bored once either time. The first viewing I was showing it to a friend who had never seen it and when it ended, he asked, "Wanna watch it again?" We did.
When I was twelve, I think this movie inspired me and lit my imagination more than any other, probably because, as you put so well, it just reeks of passion. And I love that.
It's an amazing film, and it's a pleasure to watch a titan of film like Peter Jackson have free reign to make the movie he wants. The only real drawback is the business of sequences. The stampede, the rex fight, the bug trench are all awesome scenes but could probably have used some trimming.
This movie is a goddamn artistic masterpiece! I bloody love it as I have done since I was 11! This is one of my favourite movies ever and I regard it as one of the best movies ever made! Thank you Peter Jackson and co. for creating this mesmerising brilliance!
I have this on DVD ever since 2006, but I just caught this film on TV last night. Man... I had no idea I needed to revisit this film. The characters, the atmosphere, the nostalgia, the V-Rex fight, the spider pit, the quieter moments, it really lifted my spirits in these harsh times. I didn't even find the first chunk in the boat boring, there was so much character interaction and build up. There's so much schlock these days, I guess I took for granted how good and genuinely enjoyable this actually was.
Great review as always, I was 5 when this movie came out and absolutely loved it this version of king kong will always be my favorite iteration of the character
This is my favorite King kong movie. This was the only one where I felt sad when King dies and in thos one he feels like a character rather than a monster.
I remember watching this movie as a 8 year old in the theaters... fell in love with the movie and bought the 1933 and 1976 King Kong movies at Blockbuster lol. I remember thinking how real it looked but this was back in 2005 and I know a lot of comments are about the CGI but I think for a movie made 16 years ago it holds up.
Good review, I just desagree at one point, and that is something I have seen in other videos about it: the relationship of Ann and Jack and his character in general, I really like them together. I also think jack is charming and has good lines and personality. Also, the romance between them is believable for me.
If someone really bettered this movie in my lifetime I will personally bow to the director no matter how much it costs me I have never felt emotional even in emotional movies
I have a lot of nostalgia for this film if I'm being honest. I had one of my best theater experiences sitting down with this movie. It wasn't anything different from the norm but it was just a lot of fun. Not only that but my high school orchestra teacher got us to play a King Kong medley which was actually pretty neat.
I'd still love to see Peter Jackson, do the sequel, based on this film.... ....Son of Kong. I loved this film, that much, that I still think a revisit to the island, is warranted.
@@travisbickle4360 That, is a plot point of the newest incarnation, of the flea infested monkey. Cinematic canon, has it otherwise. Heck, there was even a "Lady Kong"! So that "Last of his kind" stuff, is dubious.....especially where sequel profits are to be made.
By far and away the best Kong film ever made. A King Kong movie told with the same epic scale and quality of the best Lord of the Rings films. Pure perfection.
I saw this a few days ago Never saw the original just yet cause its hard to find But I love this film even tho its 3 hrs, many interesting supporting characters, and the brilliant work that went into this film.
I remember seeing this movie when it came out, and it gave me nightmares for days. But I loved it and fell in love for it because of Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis.
Fun fact: the spider pit was going to be in the 1933 kong, but was too complicated, so they never dit it, but I think on the DVD or Blue ray there is a video on the extra features of what it wold of looked like
It's worth noting that the Wii game based on this movie (made by Michel Ancel, of Rayman game) is considered one of the best licensed videogames of all time.
King Kong (1933): A (grade) for the future. Merian C. Cooper (production for Son of Kong): Fine, you make it, then... but without me. King Kong (1976): Not as good, but it's okay. D- King Kong Lives (1986): Black sheep F. Universal Studios (1996ish): Hey, Mr Jackson. Can you try and make another remake, but make it more like the original this time. (After getting delayed, and directing Lord of the Rings): Hey, can you try to make that remake, please. It would be so much better. December 2005: YEAH! THAT'S WHAT WE"RE TALKING ABOUT! A little bit romantic, though. B.
it sems to me that by extending the Carl denhan chatacter there can be NO mystery about what he wants, and his obssesive ruthlessness to get it. this can only be good making him more BELIEVABLE in this version than the minimalist wooden version seen in the 1933 classic, also if their were ever any doubt as to WHY Ann Darrow would agree to go on a dangerous voyage to an unchartered part of the world, thats laid to rest here by the depression & her love of Driscoll's work, plus when you give it some thought she uses her ...acting skills *demonstrated in the opening montage) to entertain kong in order to stay alive, unlike previous offerings to him
I kind of wish we got a sequel to this movie with the world knowing about Skull Island sending expeditions and exploring more of the lore and more of Skull Island. Maybe a prequel for the first explores to skull island maybe
Jack Driscoll is written extraordinarily in the game tho. Perhaps he's supposed to be this rather blank page so you can put yourself more easily into his shoes and it helps thr game (which is objectively the best movie game ever)
I remember that when the movie came out, it didnt get very good reviews. But for me it was like a movie tailored specifically to me: 3 hours of CGI epicness one part and the other being a drama even my 14 year old self could comprehend and empathize with.

@@squatch570 One can express their negative feelings about the movie, but it's just plain childish to insult or make fun of the people who like it
I don't care what these uncultured swine think.
We want a sequel of king kong 2005
I remember a couple of years ago we were watching a movie at University. I don't remember what movie it was, but it was set in the late 80s and at some point they mentioned King Kong. Some students started to mumble to each other, and one of them clearly said "wait, did King Kong already exist in the 80s?"
That's when i realized that a good chunk of the general audience probably thinks that Peter Jackson created the character with this movie, and now i'm sure that there are people out there who think that Godzilla 98 is the original Godzilla
One of if not the best remake ever. Freaking love this movie! 😄
Trey Rex Agreed!
I couldn't agree more
This movie never fails to make me tear up by the end
I absolutely adore this film. It may be incredibly long, but I hardly notice it when I'm watching because of how in-depth it expands on the world the film builds.
Ah, yes the best of the traditional style King Kong films.
I absolutely love this movie. Jackson did such an amazing job with this movie. It's so dramatic and epic
This movie is in my opinion, the best remake of all time.
0:47 wait, Kyle Chandler was in King Kong 05 AND was the main human character in Godzilla KOTM? Legendary.
What's really cool is Naomi was givin the okay by Fae Rey herself before passed so she really is the real successor of the character.
Aside from the bug scene, I love everything about this movie
Despite its many flaws, nothing will ever stop me from loving this movie. It is perhaps one of the most epic, large scale, and grand adventure movies of all time and as a child it captured my imagination in ways no other movie could.
Agreed
I love this movie! Definitely my favorite Kong movie since the original!
Honestly, this was my favorite iteration of King Kong, even after skull island. Despite it’s flaws, it’s representation of Kong is simply beautiful, tragic, yet action packed and compelling! Was the biggest fan of it as a kid 💘
I played The Peter Jackson King Kong game before watching this movie I like the game a little more
@Ivan Ringle And the V-Rex sections were horrifying.
Serkis actually makes the character Lumpy kind of awesome
I was one of those who shed a tear when Kong died. Very powerful movie.
My only problem with this movie is really just the length and that it often drangs along, but otherwise this is a masterpiece.
Is it too long? Yes. Is it still a fantastic adventure movie which was made with a tremendous amount of heart and expert skill? Yes!
My love and introduction to King Kong as a whole
I actually turned off the film because I didn't want to watch Kong die. It's more than sad, even more than simply tragic. Sirkis and Jackson really brought Kong to life, and I loved the critter.
On a cold winter's night in Peoria, IL while attending a safety conference, I ordered a deep dish pizza from the UNO restaurant in the hotel, went to my room, ordered this movie and settled in for an entertaining evening. I made it through the 1st hour and reached Skull Island. Next thing I remember was waking up and seeing the credits rolling. Must have been the deep dish...
I really love this movie, and the reverence for the original film was my favorite part.
"Let me claim the Brontosaurus stampede looks dated now rather than constructively explaining how and why!"
Seriously, I've seen tons of CGI today that looks worse.
One of my favourite movies of all time. Probably because I grew up watching it.
This is hands down my #1 favorite movie of all time!!!!
My dear friend I couldn't have reviewed it better myself. There will never be a need to remake this beautiful master piece.
There's a fan edit on Vimeo that trims the movie down to more closely match the pacing of the original. That's how I always rewatch the movie.
Truly my favourite kong movie an amazing retelling, great game to.
I still love Peter Jackson's King Kong
Honestly one of my favorite films of all time.
I can’t believe that in 2 years, this film will be 20 years old. Yet it still holds up pretty well
Personally this is one of my favorite versions, it’s also what introduced me to Kong as a whole
I personally adore the extended cut of this movie. It’s one of like 5 movies that I love that reaches past the 3 hour mark.
Good review, I just desagree at one point, and that is something I have seen in other videos about it: the relationship of Ann and Jack and his character in general, I really like them together. I also think jack is charming and has good lines and personality. Also, the romance between them is believable for me.
I’ve been waiting for this review for so long
This movie is perfection
If someone really bettered this movie in my lifetime I will personally bow to the director no matter how much it costs me
I have never felt emotional even in emotional movies
This movie was good times. Good times. Still the best.
Easily one of my Top3 movies of all time.
I'm so facinated by Skull Island and it's creatures.
your reviews are getting really good imo
I have a lot of nostalgia for this film if I'm being honest. I had one of my best theater experiences sitting down with this movie. It wasn't anything different from the norm but it was just a lot of fun. Not only that but my high school orchestra teacher got us to play a King Kong medley which was actually pretty neat.
I'd still love to see Peter Jackson, do the sequel, based on this film....
....Son of Kong. I loved this film, that much, that I still think a revisit to the island, is warranted.
Son of Kong stupid and completely goes against Kong being Last of its kind which makes the movie less tragic
When you ace the blood test without studying 0:01
Always loved this movie! One of the best remakes ever. Love the original as well.
By far and away the best Kong film ever made. A King Kong movie told with the same epic scale and quality of the best Lord of the Rings films. Pure perfection.
I saw this a few days ago
Never saw the original just yet cause its hard to find
But I love this film even tho its
3 hrs, many interesting supporting characters, and the brilliant work that went into this film.
I just want someone to admit that the first tribe encounter was so terrifying as a kid scarring shit
You should talk about the videogame that came out after the movie, it's pretty decent actually...
One of the greatest movies ever made
Kyle Chandler is the only actor to be in both a Godzilla and a Kong film and will also be in the crossover, Godzilla vs Kong.
This is tied with the 1976 remake to be my favorite king kong film
1) 1976
2) 2005
3) 1933
I like the extended version even better than the theatrical as it added nothing but new monster scenes including the swamp scene.
King Kong (1933): A (grade) for the future.
Merian C. Cooper (production for Son of Kong): Fine, you make it, then... but without me.
King Kong (1976): Not as good, but it's okay. D-
King Kong Lives (1986): Black sheep F.
Peter jackson's King Kong is my personal #1 favorite movie of all time!!!!!
it sems to me that by extending the Carl denhan chatacter there can be NO mystery about what he wants, and his obssesive ruthlessness to get it.
this can only be good making him more BELIEVABLE in this version than the minimalist wooden version seen in the 1933 classic, also if their were ever any doubt as to WHY Ann Darrow would agree to go on a dangerous voyage to an unchartered part of the world, thats laid to rest here by the depression & her love of Driscoll's work, plus when you give it some thought she uses her ...acting skills *demonstrated in the opening montage) to entertain kong in order to stay alive, unlike previous offerings to him
I kind of wish we got a sequel to this movie with the world knowing about Skull Island sending expeditions and exploring more of the lore and more of Skull Island. Maybe a prequel for the first explores to skull island maybe
Alright then, I love this guy's reviews tough but fair. What's next, another Godzilla movie?
I saw this in the theater as a kid and it was mind blowing probably the same way the 1933 one was to an adult back then.
Jack Driscoll is written extraordinarily in the game tho. Perhaps he's supposed to be this rather blank page so you can put yourself more easily into his shoes and it helps thr game (which is objectively the best movie game ever)
I honestly don't understand how this movie is at all bad.
It's a classic masterpiece in my eyes
I remember that when the movie came out, it didnt get very good reviews. But for me it was like a movie tailored specifically to me: 3 hours of CGI epicness one part and the other being a drama even my 14 year old self could comprehend and empathize with.
