I was a Japanese kindergartner when I watched "King Kong vs Godzilla" with my mother at a movie theater in my hometown in 1962. Since that time on, I have been hooked on Godzilla. I`m glad that I`m one of the first generation who watched this movie when it was originally released.
So glad we're finally getting the uncut Japanese version of this movie on Blu-ray in October, Thank you Criterion.
As a fan in the UK its like 10 Christmases combined into 1.
As impressive as the new Kong is in the Monsterverse, it's hard to imagine how he'll actually have any kind of chance over Godzilla when they eventually have their big fight.
Kong is resourceful, meaning he can use any object in his surroundings that he can get his hands on as weapons and even craft one of his own if he has to. Just because he lacks powers doesn't mean he should be underestimated, same way that just because Batman has no powers doesn't mean he can still kick Superman's ass.
Jay Can’t give up on Kong that easily. Kong isn’t a giant gorilla. He’s a giant monster that looks like a gorilla. We don’t know if Legendary pictures is going to give him something special or not, like a thunderous lightning-charged punch or something stronger like United States of Smash, or just turn him super sayian-like.
I thought I saw somewhere there maybe a 3rd monster in G vs K movie that Godzilla and King Kong team up against after they briefly fight against each other. Maybe Destroyah? Because remember they used an oxygen destroyer in the previous Godzilla film.
He has a bigger brain, superior agility, and opposable thumbs, all of which will give him an edge over Godzilla. Godzilla's brute force and atomic rays are not to be downplayed, mind you. But I don't think Kong will go down easy at all, should he lose the battle.

Hey man, out of curiosity would you happen to know where one could get the original Japanese cut of the film with English subtitles? I've been looking everywhere to get a copy of it but I only come across the American version. This is the only Godzilla movie I've actually never seen haha

I distinctly remember this being the second Godzilla film I ever saw behind the original. I used to love this movie and would watch it at my grandma's while playing with my Godzilla toys.
I actually just watched the Japanese version for the first time, thanks to the Criterion release, and while it does lend way for the more humorous aspects the franchise became known for, I was pleasantly surprised at how balanced and foreboding it actually was. I now rank it higher on my list. Great video and well put insight.
Call it nostalgia if you want, but this is my favorite film of all time. Warts and all.

While not one of my favorites, it's a very enjoyable campy movie. If you like the satirical humor of this film, I recommend seeking out two of Kihachi Okamoto's best films. Those films being The Elegant Life of Mr. Everyman (1963) and Oh Bomb! (1964). Both films are very much like this film oddball comedies but to an even more surreal extent and like this movie have commentary on Japanese society.

I agree with King Kong looks awful and ugly while I like Godzilla's design very much. In 2020, we'll get amazing look of Kong.
The reason that is; was that the cheap bastards at Universal Pictures
didn't care to give Toho funds for a proper costume.
So Toho Studios salvaged the suit from their second monster movie:
The Monster Snowman / Half Human.
So an altered yeti costume with a quickly made Kong Face was made for the film.
I grew up with King Kong vs. Godzilla. I'm very excited for Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020. It'll not be remake of Toho's version.

This was one of the first Godzilla films I ever saw. I didn't think much of it at the time (even at a young age I was confused by Kong's sudden electrical prowess among other things), but as I've grown older I realize the IMPORTANCE of this movie. Godzilla and King Kong, arguably the most famous movie monsters ever, fighting it out? That's gotta be one for the textbooks. All of the kaiju fans back then must've been so hyped. Good thing we get to go through that hype again in 2021 :)

Kong's lightning power was because the film was written to be Frankenstein vs Godzilla. They changed it to Kong later.

NO. It was supposed to be Frankenstein vs. KONG. GODZILLA was added later after the script was given to TOHO by John Beck.

RED UNITED VIEWS Frankenstein vs Kong. And I really hope they bring that over. People like to think Kong is a giant gorilla but in reality he’s a giant monster that resemble a gorilla. The world don’t know he’s able to create crazy attack like most Kaiju or not. That would be awesome at the same time pretty lame if they gave him an electrical aura like SSJ2.
As crazy as Kong have *electrical powers* was, they could have given him some mystical/magical abilities, from - I don't know, a couple identical singing fairies.
This was the second Showa Godzilla movie I ever saw, and it took full effect on me. This movie deserved to be a hit from the moment it came out. I mean, it's basically the world's two most famous monsters going at it, giving their respective fanbases a chance to interact. King Kong vs Godzilla isn't my favorite, but it's definitely one of the most memorable Godzilla movies.
I can still remember the first time viewing this classic, paired with another classic King Kong escapes in a Saturday matinee ,I think I paid like 5 dollars,drink and popcorn included! /anyways this is where I first got hooked on Godzilla and King Kong as it was the same year the remake of King Kong came out! and I went to that movie so many times as there were no videos back then!, but even today I still watch all the old movies, as well as the new,can't wait for the new version of King Kong Vs Godzilla!

The Godzilla v Kong fight from this movie is the most entertaining of them all imo.
Now if only we could get the Japanese version on Blu Ray in the US...
Criterion is going to give us exactly that in October of 2019 (this year). And not just the Japanese version, but also the American version. That's right, we're getting BOTH cuts of the film on Blu-Ray in the US this year!
I always felt that the idea behind King Kong vs. Godzilla was better than the actual execution. This is hardly one of the best kaiju movies but the concept of it draws significant interest.
This was my first (Japanese) Godzilla film. Before this film I saw the 1998 movie and the american version of the '54 film. I think this is a great starting place for any beginners that are used to more goofy kaiju movies.

I actually liked the human story. The characters were quite funny in the way they delivered their performance. I love Kong getting drunk and passing out. Reminds me of my uncle.
I love this film so much mostly because how long and Godzilla fight it’s like they’re brothers and this entire movie is just prime showa era
Apart from the first vs mechagodzilla and MAYBE invasion of the astro monster I think this might be my favorite Godzilla film from the Showa era. Everything feels so balanced and enjoyable about it. The monsters the human characters, it’s all fun. True Kong does look pretty terrible but it hardly bothered me. And though I wish Godzilla would have one, especially with how they both dove into the water you’d think Godzilla would have the advantage. Well at least they’ll be getting a rematch soon enough!
Ahhhh yes the beginning of the Showa era not my favorite but a welcome one as any fan would do so

The Kong suit was made to make people laugh. He was supposed to resemble a giant stuffed toy and was intentionally played up as goofy. Kids were beginning to see SPFX films in Japan in troves and Tsuburaya wanted a more whimsical looking Kong that wouldn’t frighten them.

A big improvement over Godzilla Raids Again. And one of the best Showa films. I mean the special effects for the most part are really good, the pace and soundtrack are very well, the human characters aren't stand outs but are fun and keep you interested, the Godzilla suit is underrated and the final battle between Godzilla and King Kong is one of if not the best fight in the entire series. The biggest problem though is Kong himself. He looks really bad and fake in this movie. The movie also does have bad special effects at times, and the movie changes some of the characters strengths and weaknesses. But overall King Kong vs Godzilla is a flawed but very important and entertaining film in the franchise. I will give this film a 7.8/10.

I remember seeing this in the theater almost 60 years ago. I recall it all so well. Great fun! Yea Kong was pretty cheesy and Godzilla himseld acted kind of silly but so what? It's a giant monster film. Gotta just go with the film. Just watched Pacific Rim again. Uttetly preposterous but arguably a lot of fun. That's rather the point of kaiju films.
I was wondering if you could do a thorough review on the U.S version of this film? I just recently saw it for the first time from the Criterion Collection and it was such a COMPLETE OPPOSITE of what I got compared to the one your talking about here. Love your channel btw! :3

If you love giant monsters and you're 11, this is the best movie ever made.
No matter how good the new one is, this is always gonna be the best
People all the time talk about why you shouldnt remake movies. But King Kong vs. Godzilla is a prime example of why sometimes a remake is necessary. The movie is awesome but its still cheesy and a lot of special effects are truly awful (suits mostly, miniature work is awesome). Godzilla vs. Kong is one of the most justified remakes we are going to get not only likely telling a greater story and having better special effects.
You should review some of the other Toho Kaiju movies like The Mysterians and Varan
Godzilla vs Frankenstein is the reason for the kong traits kong was supposed to fight frank in a Willis O’Brien film and it switched places when toho got hold of the script
While most folks would see Kong's design as ugly as all get out and a complete sin to Willis O'Brien's legacy
Just remember RKO specifically asked Toho not to have this version of Kong resemble the OG look from 1933, so they (People who worked on the Kong suit for this movie) looked at Japanese Macaques for inspiration to Kong's design in this film.
I think I have a reason to why rko told toho to not have this version of Kong to not look like the 1933 King Kong. Maybe rko thought the audience would think that King Kong vs Godzilla was in the same timeline as the original King Kong movie so that is why rko didn’t what people to think that King Kong vs Godzilla was connected to the original King Kong film but this just theory I had it’s probably not true.
So question wich version is better the American version or Japanease version?
Both are very flawed. I would argue that the Japanese version is objectively better, but the American version has a humorous script at times.

And you can clearly tell in certain scenes, particularly the part where Godzilla takes an uncharacteristic interest in Kumi Mizuno.

Unpopular opinion: I think this design of King Kong looks cool, when his eyes are shadowed and when you see him from the proflie view. The close ups and his eyes look hilariously bad though

Most likely neither creature is going to with in the new film. Why?
Because both are presented of guardians, one of it's home island, and one of the planet, so if these two are going to be duking it out, there has to be a reason why they'd be fighting each other.
Let's not forget that Kong also had his own standalone film in the Legendary series, so it would seem like just such a huge waste to throw that all away right afterwards with this film, especially considering all the other things they could bring in and adapt for these monster icons to fight later on instead.

I don't know if it was just the terrible dub (Never saw the sub), Godzilla losing, Kong's terrible design, not being a fan of Godzilla's transitional design, but I even as a kid never liked this film. I just found it not as entertaining as later showa films and not as "cool" as Heisei/Millenium films. Maybe I should rewatch it?

It's campy and silly regardless of whether you watch the Japanese or US version.
I would recommend the Japanese cut.The English version is more than a simple dub,they totally reworked it,adding American stars etc.
As iconic and entertaining this one may be, it's way too silly and exaggerated for my liking. I give it 3 stars out of 5.

So, got people telling me that toho confirmed that kong won in this film, yet Adam wingard said the ending was left ambiguous and not a clear winner. What's the truth on that?
Both really. It is left ambiguous but Toho says Kong won. So it depends on what you see vs what Toho says. Personally I only care about what the movie shows me, and the movie is never obvious about who the winner is so I say it's a stalemate. Am I really supposed to believe that Godzilla, who LIVES underwater, lost just because he fell in the water and didn't pop back up?

This movie was ok
Probably my least favourite entry, I just think it's a bad Kong film and a bad Godzilla film so mixing them together just fell flat for me. At least the fight on Mt.Fuji was cool.
This was made during the time when Godzilla was still considered to be a villain, If Godzilla won....it would be fucked up.
I like this movie but i hate the Godzilla suit more than the kong suit.
Truthfully? I disagree with you in that I find this movie suffers from poor pacing and tends to drag in general. Though I do agree with you on most all your other assessments. My biggest worry about the new one is that once again it sounds like Legendary listened to the new generation of neckbeards with the attention span of gnats who only want to see 2-hour Kaiju Wrestling Federation battles without anything else to balance it out. I'll likely go see it anyway, mind you, to see if I'm wrong more than anything else.
Many 'fans' don't realise that quality is more important than quantity. They'll take 30 minutes of crappy action scenes over 10 minutes of quality action.

I like this Godzilla. Kong is ugly as sin in nearly every movie (because he's a big ugly gorilla). But that's just my opinion.
