Lawn Mower Carburetor Installation Nightmare! Honda GVC160 5.5HP Who Designed this thing?

  • Watching my mistakes can save you some aggravation! In retrospect, I would connect the throttle and choke linkage and the fuel line first. Then assemble all the remaining gaskets, plates, spacers and such on the two long air cleaner housing bolts. Jump to the final minute and a half to see how the project turned out. Thanks for watching.

    The suspense is killin' me. Wait till he realizes he forgot the plastic spacer. What's next? The SPACER don't forget the SPACER. Oh damn. Never saw the plastic spacer go on. And the gas line and the breather tube. It runs? Amazing!

  • @davekerr1624

    What I did with this situation was went to the local hardware store bought a piece of threaded rod same size as the bolts that hold carb on (think it was 5mm) and 2 nuts. Cut 2 pieces of the rod off just a little longer than the bolts so you can thread on the nuts after assembly. Anyway thread the 2 rods into the engine block and slide on spacer, gaskets, carb etc in correct order. You will before this have to take the bolt (10mm head) that holds the carb, governor springs and choke rods out and gently move the bracket enough to install carb and its linkage. Place all pieces over the threaded rod in order reinstalling the bracket. Install the fuel line and install the air intake and install the 2 nuts on the threaded rod and tighten. Install the breather pipe on the air intake. Make sure all linkages are free to movement. I should have mentioned this process is a lot easier if you remove the 3 nuts off the pull starter removing it and the gas tank and cover. Give better visuals and is simple to remove.

      I agree. I'm a little surprised Honda would design something like this. I'm a retired licensed auto technician and saw stupid stuff designed like this regularly. When doing repairs it would force a person to think outside the box.

    Just went through this nightmare about an hour ago. It took me 2 hours to get back together and when I started it, it surged, Ughhhhh! the idea about using studs is a great idea. Stack everything on the studs and use nuts to tighten everything! Great idea!

    Put the mower on its side carb up, glue all gaskets in position then connect carburetor to linkages and fuel line, last stack everything in position and drop air box on top and bolts through. Easiest way to do it by far.

    Thank you for the video. It was full of useful information. I'm doing exactly the same thing right now. It's the stuff that heart attacks are made of. I have put on and pulled off that assembly uncountable times due to missing a spring or linkage hookup at the appropriate time. When I get it put back together I will gleefully sell it and I"M GOING CORDLESS. No fuel, no choke, no spark plug, no fumes, no gas, no oil changes, and no oil.That's how bad I hated this job.

    Remove the plate between carb and filter cover. One 10mm. Then slide all parts over the bolts on the filter cover. Easier to get all gaskets, two plates and spacer in place, then mount to block.

    I glue all my gaskets in place on one side and use a 4 to 5inch metal rod that will fit thru right bolt hole and line it up and put the other bolt in snug it down then line up the other bolt hole and tighten it up. I cut a lot of the plastic off the air cleaner holder top and bottom so I could see what I was doing. Quite the pain.

    Just did carb replacement yesterday. You are so correct - it is a real PIA job😆😆😆. If you don't do this everyday (which most homeowners don't) it can be frustrating. Don't forget to attach the fuel line and breather tube before tightening the airbox down. Also the job is a little easier (you can see better) if you loosen and lay aside the starter/fuel tank shroud (only three nuts to remove). Was not sure the engine On this 17 year old Honda mower would fire up, but it did on the third pull. In spite of the carb changeout hassle, Honda makes the best lawn mowers in my opinion😊😊😊

    This works for me. Take out 1 carb bolt, go to the hardware store, buy some all thread and a couple nuts, cut to size. Replace the bolts with the all thread, and assemble one piece at a time. It really makes it a hell of a lot easier.

    How are the mix & idle screws adjusted, in situ? -
    They are on the (RH) obscured side of the carb!
    And further hidden by the filter body dust/air flow shield design.....
    Am tempted to cut the shield off!
    Now I know why old Briggs engines had no covering over the springs & links!

  • @dfor50
    @dfor50 4 года назад +1

    I've gone through that exercise too. In the end I replaced those bolts with some steel rod, the same length as the bolts but tapped at both ends. That way I could just fit the rods into the block where the bolts go and slide everything on and then use securing nuts at the air filter end. All the "chonda's" have this system, so if you had access to one of those as a junk mower, you could use the rods off one of them instead of fabricating them like I did..

    replace the through bolts with a 100mm long M6.0x1.0 stud...use red threadlocker when you install the studs. Everything will just slide onto the studs when you need to reassemble or take it apart. I did not use a lock nut, i used a flanged nut on the stud to put on the air cleaner plate.

      I got a HRB216 off the curb that was missing the carburetor and air filter assembly. The make up is just like the one in this video, so I'll definitely use this suggestion. Now I'll just have to find where to get that aluminum plate, as I don't see that with the carburetor/ignition coil/filter kit. I have 2 mowers, but always wanted an older Honda mower to fix up. Basically took this one down to nothing and cleaned everything. I can't wait to see if it runs. Yes, I have no idea if it does. :)

    LOL, have the same mower and went through the same as you. Loosen the bracket also gives you more space and room and make sure that you put the black spacer on right!. After many trys found a easy way except putting breather tube back on. I still had a problem as sears put the wrong cable on when the first one broke and ever since hard to start. Found out that choke was not going on and adjusted cable all the way and choke would not go on all the way but few pulls did start but could not shut off. They show the right cable but was not and ended up hooking up a wire to choke and now starts first pull every time.

    I feel your pain. I have been going through the same crap. I pretty much glued gaskets in place before trying to re assemble.
    I think Honda did a "CYA" thing with that stupid-ass shroud around the carburetor ... as if some rock might jump up and break it, spilling gasoline and starting a massive fire.
    I took my Dremel with little cutoff disc and removed all of that stupid plastic crap. That left me with the air cleaner hookup and total access to the carb.
    If you don't have a Dremel a hack saw blade will do the trick. Just get rid of that stupid, totally unnecessary access blocking plastic.

    • @Buckwsr
      @Buckwsr  2 года назад

      Yes, I've had occasion to cut back the shroud around carburetor. It was the only way I could look and verify on one particular mower if the automatic choke was working properly. Thanks for the note!

  • @stevenodell4323

    I seriously feel your pain, but trial and error led me to the two big keys to this puzzle. First, loosen up the long bolt that fastens the throttle plate (think that's what that long, flat piece of sheet steel is called) and second, connect the choke and throttle linkages, then the fuel hose and clamp, then the air hose. Then run those two long bolts through the air box, then the first gask (careful to orient it properly), then the carb, then the next gasket, then the air dam then the spacer then the last gasket. If you keep the air box tilted just a little as you do all that, the parts will stay put. Level it up and get the bolts into their holes as you do it and tighten everything up. I love these GCV 160 and 190 engines, so I have several. I agree the carburetor install is a poor design, but like a lot of weird stuff, the more of these you do the easier it gets. Really!

    I own lawnmower whit this engine. I had problems whit starting, looked for videos on RUclips. Find one where is shown how to clean carburetor. In the video everything looked easy to be done. Beee mistake!!! I think that after clining of fuel nozzle, when assembling the carburetor on the lawnmower, felt dirt in the cylinder and carburetor also. I wuld need a extra pair of hands to asist me. I just hoped it wuld start. In the end same shit then before. Pulling 20 x until starting. This was in winter cold. Found out the cold was the problem it would not start. Now when temperatures are higher / no problem.
